Sourav Ganguly initially played football as it is the favourite sport for the people of Kolkata but was later attracted to Cricket. However, his mother was not very supportive of him taking up any sports as a career.

Sourav Ganguly's elder brother Snehasish Ganguly, who was already an established cricketer by then, supported Ganguly's dream to be a cricketer and persuaded their father to get Ganguly enrolled in a cricket coaching camp during his summer holidays. He took admission in a cricket academy where his batting talent was identified.

He learnt cricket with his brother and despite being right-handed, he learnt to bat left-handed so that he could use his brother's sporting equipment. He scored a century against Orissa Under-15 and went on becoming the captain of St. Xavier's School's cricket team.

In 1989, Sourav Ganguly was selected to play for the Bengal team. Coincidentally, his brother dropped from the side that year. After an impressive show in the Ranji Trophy in the 1990-91 season, the left-hander came into the limelight.

Sourav Ganguly: Personal Life

The marriage of Sourav Ganguly is full of drama or we can say is just like a Bollywood movie. He ran away with his childhood friend Dona Roy in 1997 as their families didn't agree. Both the families were troubled by the incident and later came to reconciliation.

In February 1997, the couple got married. The wedding proved to be another boost for him as he evolved as a wonderful cricketer in ODI's. In ODI ton against Sri Lanka, he scored his maiden and then won consecutive Man of the Match awards. He also featured in the 1999 World Cup and struck 183 against Sri Lanka. This was the highest score in ODI cricket of Sourav Ganguly. The couple has a daughter Sana Ganguly who was born in November 2001.

Sourav Ganguly: International Debut

In 1992, he made his international debut against West Indies. It was not an ideal start as he could score just 3 runs batting at No. 6 in an ODI at the Gabba, Brisbane. He was dropped immediately due to his as he was perceived to be "arrogant" and his attitude towards the game was openly questioned. It was also rumoured that Sourav Ganguly refused to carry drinks for his teammates, commenting that it was not his job to do so and later denied by him. s a result, he was removed from the team.

He then went back to domestic cricket and worked hard. In the Ranji seasons of 93, 94, and 95 consecutively, he was a spectacular run maker. In the 1995-96 Duleep Trophy, he scored 171 and was called back to the Indian side. He played to the National Team for a tour of England in 1996. For the single ODI, he played but was omitted from the team for the first Test. Later, Navjot Singh Siddhu left the England tour because of the mistreatment by the then captain Mohammad Azharuddin.

Therefore, Sourav Ganguly got a chance to make his Test debut. For the first time in the whites, in the second Test of the tour that was played at the Lord's London, he represented the national side. Let us tell you that in the same game, Rahul Dravid also made his Test debut. Sourav Ganguly scored 131 and Rahul Dravid 95. In the next Test at Trent Bridge, Sourav Ganguly scored 136 and became the third batsman in the history to score centuries in the first 2 innings after Lawrence Rowe and Alvin Kallicharran. He had the gift of an immaculate timing and was termed as the "god of the Off side".

He also shared a 255 run stand with Sachin Tendulkar, which became at that time the highest partnership for India against any country for any wicket outside India. The Test ended in a draw, handing England at 1-0 series victory, Sourav Ganguly scored 48 in the second innings.

Sourav Ganguly: Era of Captaincy

After some match-fixing scandal by some of the players of the team in 2000. Sourav Ganguly was named as the Captain of the Indian Cricket Team. The decision was taken due to Tendulkar stepping down from the position for his health and at that time Sourav Ganguly was the vice-captain. His start as a captain was well and lead India to a series win over South Africa in the five-match one-day series and led the Indian team to the finals of the 2000 ICC KnockOut Trophy where New Zealand defeated the Men in Blue.

Then a series arrived that proved to be the game-changer for Sourav Ganguly as well as for Indian cricket. At that time Australia was a champion and defeating them would like a distant dream for any team. Under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly, India broke Australia's streak of winning 16 consecutive test matches in 2001.

During the Natwest Series, another highlight of Sourav Ganguly's career where India beat England in an ODI at Lord's and he swayed his T-shirt from the balcony of the Lord's. It was the response to Andrew Flintoff who swayed his T-shirt at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.

India reached the final of the World Cup in 2003 for the first time since 1983 but lost to the Australians. Personally, Sourav Ganguly had a successful tournament, he scored 465 runs at an average of 58.12, including three centuries.

As a captain by 2004, he had achieved significant success and was deemed as India's most successful captain by sections of the media. During his captaincy reign, his individual performance deteriorated especially after the World Cup, the tour of Australia in 2003, and in 2004 the Pakistan series. For the first time since 1969, Australia won a Test series in India.

Due to indifferent form in 2004 and poor form in 2005, Sourav Ganguly was dropped from the team in October 2005. The cap[taincy was passed to Rahul Dravid, his former deputy. Sourav Ganguly was awarded the Padma Shri in 2004, India's fourth-highest civilian award, in recognition of his distinguished contribution in the field of sports. The award was presented on 30 June, 2004 by then President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

Sourav Ganguly: The Chappel Saga

In September 2005, the former Australian cricketer Greg Chappell became the head coach of India. The dispute of Greg Chappel with Sourav Ganguly resulted in several headlines. Greg Chappel had emailed the Board of Control for Cricket in India, that Ganguly was "physically and mentally" unfit to lead India and that his "divide and rule" behaviour was damaging the Indian team. As a result, the Board tried to intervene and attempted to bring both of them together to work as a team. But due to poor performance and disputes with the coach, Sourav Ganguly was removed from the captaincy and also dropped from the side. Therefore, to lead the team, Rahul Dravid was chosen as a captain.

He scored 51 in the first Test against South Africa. In Johannesburg, India won the match and Ganguly did well. He was recalled to the ODI side also and some impressive performances gave him a place in the 2007 ODI World Cup.

In the latter stages, he performed well across formats and scored maiden Test double hundred against Pakistan in 2007. Consistently, he was doing well and decided to bid adieu to international cricket after being in a form. Biography Of Sourav Ganguly- The Warrior Captain

Cricketer Biography

Some felt he couldn't play the bouncer, others swore that he was God on the off-side; some laughed at his lack of athleticism, others took immense pride in his ability to galvanize a side. Sourav Ganguly's ability to polarise opinion led to one of the most fascinating dramas in Indian cricket. Yet, nobody can dispute that he was India's most successful Test captain - forging a winning unit from a bunch of talented, but directionless, individuals and nobody can argue about him being one of the greatest one-day batsmen of all time.

Sourav Chandidas Ganguly affectionately known as Dada had the distinctive ability to hit powerful shots to the off-side on front and back foot with equal ease. However, early in his career he was not comfortable with the hook and pull, often giving his wicket away with mistiming such shots.

Sourav Ganguly was born on 8th July 1972 in Calcutta, and is the youngest son of Chandidas and Nirupa Ganguly. Chandidas ran a flourishing print business and was one of the richest men in the city. Ganguly had a luxurious childhood and was nicknamed the 'Maharaja', meaning the 'Great King'. Since the favourite sport for the people of Calcutta was the game of football, Ganguly was initially attracted to the game. However, academics came in-between his love for sports and his mother was not very supportive of Ganguly taking up cricket or any other sport as a career. By then, his elder brother Snehasish was already an established cricketer for the Bengal cricket team. He supported Ganguly's dream to be a cricketer and asked their father to get Ganguly enrolled in a cricket coaching camp during his summer holidays.

Despite being right-handed, Ganguly learnt to bat left-handed so he could use his brother's sporting equipment. After he scored a century against the Orissa Under–15 side, he was made captain of St Xavier's School's cricket team and subsequently made his first-class cricket debut for Bengal in 1989, the same year that his brother was dropped from the team.

Following a prolific Ranji season in 1990–91, Ganguly scored three runs in his One Day International (ODI) debut for India against the West Indies in 1992.He was dropped immediately since he was perceived to be "arrogant" and his attitude towards the game was openly questioned. He toiled away in domestic cricket, scoring heavily in the 1993–94 and 1994–95 Ranji seasons. Following an innings of 171 in the 1995–96 Duleep Trophy, he was recalled to the National team for a tour of England in 1996, in the middle of intense media scrutiny. He played in a single ODI, but was omitted from the team for the first Test. However, after teammate Navjot Singh Sidhu left the tour, citing ill-treatment by then captain Mohammad Azharuddin, Ganguly made his Test debut against England in the second test of a three-match series at Lord's Cricket Ground alongside Rahul Dravid. Ganguly scored a century, becoming only the third cricketer to achieve such a feat on debut at Lord's, after Harry Graham and John Hampshire. Andrew Strauss and Matt Prior have since accomplished this feat, but Ganguly's 131 still remains the highest by any batsman on his debut at the ground.

In the next Test match at Trent Bridge he made 136, thus becoming only the third batsman to make a century in each of his first two innings (after Lawrence Rowe and Alvin Kallicharran). He shared a 255-run stand with Sachin Tendulkar, which became at that time the highest partnership for India against any country for any wicket outside India. The Test again ended in a draw, handing England a 1–0 series victory.

Weeks after his successful tour of England, Ganguly eloped with childhood sweetheart Dona Roy. The bride and groom's family were sworn enemies at that point and this news caused uproar between them. However, both families reconciled and a formal wedding was held in February 1997. Same year, Ganguly scored his maiden ODI century by hitting 113, opposed to Sri Lanka's team total of 238. Later that year, he won four consecutive man of the match awards, in the Sahara Cup with Pakistan; the second of these was won after he took five wickets for 16 runs off 10 overs, his best bowling in an ODI. After a barren run in Test cricket his form returned at the end of the year with three centuries in four Tests all against Sri Lanka.

In March 1998 he was part of the Indian team that defeated Australia. In Kolkata, he took three wickets having opened the bowling with his medium pace. Ganguly was part of the Indian team that competed in the 1999 Cricket World Cup in England. During the match against Sri Lanka at Taunton, India chose to bat. After Sadagoppan Ramesh was bowled, Ganguly scored 183 from 158 balls, hitting 17 fours and seven sixes. It became the second highest score in World Cup history and the highest by an Indian in the tournament. His partnership of 318 with Rahul Dravid is the highest overall score in a World Cup and is the second highest in all ODI cricket. In 1999–00, India lost Test series to both Australia and South Africa that involved a combined total of five Tests. Ganguly struggled scoring 224 runs at 22.40, however his ODI form was impressive, with five centuries over the season taking him to the top of the PwC One Day Ratings for batsmen.

In 2000, after the match-fixing scandal by some of the players of the team, Ganguly was named the Captain of the Indian cricket team. The decision was spurred due to Tendulkar stepping down from the position for his health, and Ganguly being the vice-captain at that time. He began well as a captain, leading India to a series win over South Africa in the five-match one day series and led the Indian team to the finals of the 2000 ICC Knock-Out Trophy.

In Australia's three Test and five match ODI tour of India in early 2001, Ganguly caused controversy by arriving late for the toss on four occasions, something that agitated opposing captain Steve Waugh. In the fourth ODI, he caused further controversy by failing to wear his playing attire to the toss, something considered unusual in cricket circles. However, India won the Test series 2–1, ending Australia's run of 16 consecutive Test match victories in the second Test.

During the final match of the 2002 Nat-West Series held in Lords after a stunning performance by team mates Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif, Ganguly took off his shirt in public and brandished it in the air to celebrate India's victory in the match. He was later strongly condemned for tarnishing the "gentleman's game" image of cricket and disrespecting Lords protocol. Ganguly said that he was only mimicking an act performed by the British all-rounder Andrew Flintoff during a tour of India. In 2003, India reached the World Cup Final for the first time since 1983, where they lost to the Australians. Ganguly had a successful tournament personally, scoring 465 runs at an average of 58.12, including three centuries.

However, his individual performance deteriorated during his captaincy reign, especially after the World Cup, the tour of Australia in 2003 and the Pakistan series in 2004. Following indifferent form in 2004 and poor form in 2005, he was dropped from the team in October 2005. However, there was much story behind the scenes that led to his ouster.

In September 2005, Greg Chappell became the coach for the India tour of Zimbabwe. Ganguly's dispute with him resulted in many headlines. Chappell had emailed the Board of Control for Cricket in India, stating that Ganguly was "physically and mentally" unfit to lead India and that his "divide and rule" behaviour was damaging the team. The captaincy was passed to Dravid, his former deputy. Ganguly decided against retiring and attempted to make a comeback to the team. Ganguly was awarded the Padma Shri in 2004, India's fourth highest civilian award, in recognition of his distinguished contribution in the field of sports.

Ten months later, during India's tour to South Africa, Ganguly was recalled after his middle order replacements Suresh Raina and Mohammad Kaif suffered poor form. During his first Test innings since his comeback, against South Africa in Johannesburg his score of 51 helped India to victory, marking the first Test match win for the team in South Africa. Though India lost the series, Ganguly accumulated the most runs on the scoring chart. After his successful Test comeback he was recalled for the ODI team, as India played host to West Indies and Sri Lanka in back to back ODI tournaments. In his first ODI innings in almost two years, he scored a match winning 98. He performed well in both series, averaging almost 70 and won the Man of the Series Award against Sri Lanka.

On 12 December 2007, Ganguly scored his maiden double century of his career while playing against Pakistan. He scored 239 runs in the first innings of the third and final Test match of the series. Ganguly remained prolific in both Test and ODI cricket in the year 2007. He scored 1106 Test runs at an average of 61.44 (with three centuries and four fifties) in 2007 to become the second highest run-scorer in Test matches of that year after Jacques Kallis. He was also the fifth highest run-scorer in 2007 in ODIs, where he scored 1240 runs at an average of 44.28.

In February 2008, Ganguly joined as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) team, owned by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, as part of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The same year in October, Ganguly announced that the Test series against Australia starting in October 2008 would be his last. Ganguly played in every game of the four-Test series and amassed 324 runs at an average of 54.00. While playing the second Test match of the series in Mohali, Ganguly scored his final test century. In the final test match he played at Nagpur against Australia he scored 85 and 0 in his first and second innings respectively. India regained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, winning the series 2–0.

In the fourth season of the IPL he was signed by the Pune Warriors and announced his retirement from all forms of the game.

Ganguly Controversies

Refused to carry drinks in his debut match.

In 1991-92, Ganguly was a part of the Indian team for the tour to Australia, where he made his ODI against the West Indies. It was said that he had refused to carry drinks, for his teammates and behaved arrogantly for it.

He was removed from the team, for this rumour. After four years until 1996, he was recalled by the Indian Cricket Team for England tour for ODI. Years later, Ganguly cleared the rumour out in an interview and denied the whole matter, calling it as a rumour.

Ran Away with Lover

In 1997, he ran away with his childhood girlfriend Dona Roy. The families of the two didn’t get along well and so the couple eloped. Both the families were troubled by the incident and later came to reconciliation.

The couple got married in February 1997. The wedding proved to be another boost for him as he evolved into a wonderful cricketer in ODIs.

He scored his maiden ODI ton against Sri Lanka and then won consecutive Man of the Match awards. He featured in the 1999 World Cup and struck 183 against Sri Lanka at Taunton which remained his highest score in ODI cricket.

Andrew Flintoff Framed Him for Princely Behaviour

Ganguly played county cricket for Lancashire in 2000. It wasn’t a memorable time for him or his team as he did not blend into the setup. He was accused of “princely behaviour” to the extent that one story claims that he once handed his sweater to teammate Michael Atherton, asking him to carry it beyond the boundary.

There were also murmurs that he had expected others to carry his kit bag. Also, when he hit a fifty once, none of his teammates was seen applauding on the dressing room balcony.

Andrew Flintoff wrote in his book Being Freddie, “He [Sourav Ganguly] wasn’t interested in the other players and it became a situation where it was 10 players and Ganguly in the team. He turned up as if he was royalty — it was like having Prince Charles on your side.”

Alleged Affair with Actress Nagma

In early 2001, as India was getting ready to play Australia at home, there were strong rumours of Ganguly’s alleged affair with actress Nagma. There were murmurs that the two visited a temple in South India and had performed a puja meant for married couples.

Through that, Ganguly’s wife Dona stood by her man, telling Sify, “It’s all rubbish. I’m extremely angry at the way some newspapers are trying to defame us. It’s unfortunate that Sourav becomes the victim of such things.”

Ganguly’s father Chandidas even told Times of India that he believed that photographs of the two were altered.

Two years down the line, Nagma subtly confirmed the alliance, telling the Savvy magazine, “Whatever one says, nobody has denied anything. As long as there is no denial of each other’s existence in each other’s life, any person can say anything they want. There was a career at stake, besides other things, so one had to part. One had to weigh a lot of things, rather than be on an ego trip and insist on being together.”

Made Steve Waugh wait for the toss

During 2001, again another controversy came relating to him being late to the field. He was late during the India-Australia match, which annoyed the cool Steve Waugh. He was blamed for being late to every match. Later, Ganguly cleared out that he was late to only one match because he couldn’t find his blazer .

In 2006, speaking at the  Hindustan Times  Summit, Ganguly admitted that he was deliberately late for the toss against Steve Waugh for a 2001 series in order to teach him a lesson or two about rude behaviour.

However, Waugh in his autobiography Out of My Comfort Zone shares that he was annoyed by Ganguly’s “continued petulance” in being late for the toss and mentions that he was late “seven times” during that series.

Ganguly reached late for toss in 2001 which made Steve Waugh to lose his temper

Feared to Play in Grassy Wicket

A report claims that Ganguly misses the third Test against Australia at Nagpur in 2004 due to a grassy wicket surface.

This remains a popular conspiracy theory that Ganguly was unhappy with the grass on the surface for the important game and opted out of it. In the lead-up to the game, he was quite vocal about the need to have a surface that helps the home side.

However, on the morning of the Test, it was announced that Ganguly was not playing due to an injured groin and that Harbhajan Singh was out due to an illness.

Hayden wrote in Standing My Ground, “We put their ailments down to acute cases of ‘greentrackitis’, where you develop a severe intolerance to green wickets likely to give you nothing as a spin bowler and plenty of headaches as a batsman.”

Gilchrist wrote in True Colours, “When I got to the middle, Ganguly was not there. Dravid was in his blazer, ready for the toss. ‘Where’s Sourav,’ I said. Rahul couldn’t answer definitively. Between the lines, I perceived that Sourav might have pulled out from fear of losing a home series.”

However, Gilchrist did go on to write that he doesn’t know what happened to Ganguly before the game.

Greg Chappell – Ganguly Crash

In September 2005, the former Australian cricketer Greg Chappell became the head coach of India. The dispute of Greg Chappel with Sourav Ganguly resulted in several headlines. Greg Chappel had emailed the Board of Control for Cricket in India, that Ganguly was “physically and mentally” unfit to lead India and that his “divide and rule” behaviour was damaging the Indian team.

Feared to bat?

Greg Chappell and Ganguly have not yet finished in their crash. Post the incident in 2005, Chappell published a book named Fierce Focus where he mentioned that a former Indian skipper was so scared of batting in difficult conditions that he resorted to faking injuries.

“He was retiring hurt, yet he appeared to have no injury. I suggested he go for an MRI scan, but he declined. I’d seen a lot of excuses over my years from guys who didn’t want to bat in difficult conditions, but normally they were more subtle than this,” he wrote.

“He, in my view, was simply frightened of a failure before the test series.”

Late for Toss in IPL

Away from international cricket, Ganguly’s run-ins with the Aussies continued in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

In 2008, Shane Warne expressed his anger after a Rajasthan Royals-Kolkata Knight Riders game at Jaipur. Warne complained to the media about the fact that his team had to wait on the field for Ganguly to walk out to open the batting and that his batsmen too waited for the other team for five minutes.

He also criticised Ganguly for asking the umpire to check if a catch was taken cleanly by a Rajasthan fielder.

Referring to a Spirit of Cricket pledge, Warne said, “I was disappointed because in Bangalore we signed that wall about the spirit of cricket.”

Ganguly hit back in an interview to Times Now, “We just need to look at Warne’s career to understand that he has no moral right to teach what the spirit of the game is. I just want to laugh at what Warne is saying. He should not be talking about the spirit of the game.”

Rahul Dravid – Ganguly

In an interview with Headlines Today in 2011, Ganguly called out Rahul Dravid for not being able to stand up to Greg Chappel during his era of captaincy.

“Rahul Dravid is such type of a person who wants that everything goes smoothly. He knew that things were going wrong, but he had no courage to revolt and tell him (Chappell) that he was doing wrong,” Ganguly said.

Talking about how he was asked to give up his leadership ahead of the Zimbabwe series in 2005, he said: “Obviously, whatever happened with me a year ago in Zimbabwe and the kind of furore that followed any captain would think that I peacefully play cricket which is right also.”

Dravid Response

A few days later, Dravid, in a rare incident, hit back and addressed the former skipper’s statement.

“If Ganguly is saying I could not control Greg Chappell, he is entitled to an opinion. He has played many years for India,” he told Headlines Today. “But he can’t put words in my mouth as I have never had any such conversation with him.”

Ganguly called out Rahul Dravid for not being able to stand up to Greg Chappell during his era of captaincy

Crash with Umpires and Ban from Matches

Ganguly had numerous brushes with authority throughout his playing career. On three separate occasions, he was banned from matches for showing dissent to an umpire’s decision.

The first time it happened was in 1998 when he expressed his displeasure on being given out during the Bangalore Test against Australia. He was banned for one One-Day Internationals (ODI).

Then, in 2000, when Zimbabwe was in India, Ganguly was handed another ban for an “attempt to intimidate the umpires.”

The last incident took place in 2001, on the tour to Sri Lanka when he showed his bat on being given out leg-before. He was banned for an ODI yet again.

Apart from that, he was once banned for a total of six games for maintaining a slow over-rate in 2005. That came at a tough time for him as he was struggling for runs and there were questions over his captaincy.

was banned for matches was banned for 3 separate matches

Ganguly vs Kohi – Indian Whiteball Captaincy Issue

Post the unsucessful ICC T20 World Cup 2021 campaign, Virat Kohli has been striped from Indian ODI captaincy role. Right after the decision BCCI starts to face a lot of criticism from Indian cricket fans. Especially BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has been blamed for Virat Kohli’s mishandling.

The change in India’s ODI captaincy had shaken the Indian cricketing fraternity to the core. More than the role change that took place, it was the manner in which the responsibility was taken away from Kohli and handed to Rohit Sharma that rose eyebrows.

In a single tweet, the BCCI announced that Rohit was appointed India’s white-ball captain across formats. Neither a statement from the BCCI explaining the change nor a reaction from the board president, Sourav Ganguly, departing skipper Kohli, or even the newly-appointed captain Rohit was present.

Though BCCI President Sourav Ganguly explains the exact reason for Rohit Sharma’s appointment as ODI skipper , many fans believe that BCCI should considered Virat’s captaincy records before taking the decision of changing the ODI captaincy role.

The real controversy arises when Virat Kohli in a press conference declined Ganguly’s personal talk with Kohli. Earlier, Ganguly said that he personally requested Virat to not to step down from T20I captaincy role which Virat declined.

Sourav Ganguly – I personally requested Virat Kohli to not step down from the T20I captaincy.

Virat Kohli – I wasn’t told to not leave the T20i captaincy.

Sourav Ganguly, lovingly known as Dada, holds immense influence in the history of Indian cricket. He is a renowned commentator and has a notable career as the former captain of the Indian national cricket team. Widely regarded as one of the world’s leading batsmen, he has been hailed as one of India’s most successful cricket captains.

Born on 8th July 1972 in Kolkata, India, to Chandidas and Nirupa Ganguly, Sourav hails from a well-off family with his father running a successful print business. Unfortunately, his father passed away in February 2013 after a prolonged illness.

Initially drawn towards football, which is popular in Kolkata, Sourav later developed a passion for cricket. Despite his mother’s initial reluctance to support his sports career, his elder brother, Snehasish Ganguly, who was already an established cricketer, encouraged Sourav’s dreams and convinced their father to enroll him in a cricket coaching camp during summer holidays. Sourav honed his cricket skills and even switched from right-handed to left-handed batting to make use of his brother’s equipment. His talent was recognized after scoring a century against Orissa Under-15, and he eventually became the captain of St. Xavier’s School’s cricket team.

In 1989, Sourav Ganguly earned a place in the Bengal team, coinciding with his brother’s exclusion from the side. He made a mark in the Ranji Trophy during the 1990-91 season, garnering attention and establishing himself as a left-handed batsman of significance.

Sourav Ganguly Cricket Career

Sourav Ganguly, fondly known as Dada, holds a significant influence in Indian cricket history. He currently serves as the 39th President of the BCCI and has had a remarkable cricketing career as a former captain of the Indian national team and a renowned commentator. Born on 8th July 1972 in Kolkata, India, to Chandidas and Nirupa Ganguly, Sourav’s father was a successful businessman. Tragically, his father passed away in February 2013.

Though initially attracted to football, a favourite sport in Kolkata, Sourav later gravitated towards cricket. His elder brother, Snehasish Ganguly, who was already an accomplished cricketer, supported his cricketing aspirations and convinced their father to enroll Sourav in a cricket coaching camp. Sourav even learned to bat left-handed, despite being naturally right-handed, to make use of his brother’s equipment.

Sourav’s cricketing journey began in earnest when he scored a century against Orissa Under-15 and went on to become the captain of St. Xavier’s School’s cricket team. His impressive performances in domestic cricket earned him a spot in the Bengal team in 1989. Coincidentally, his brother dropped from the team that year.

In 1992, Sourav made his ODI debut against West Indies, but it was not an ideal start, and he was dropped from the team due to his perceived arrogance. However, he returned to domestic cricket, performed exceptionally well in the Ranji Trophy, and was called back to the Indian side for a tour of England in 1996. He made his Test debut in the Second Test at Lord’s and scored a century, becoming only the third cricketer to achieve such a feat on debut at Lord’s.

Sourav’s captaincy era was a significant turning point for Indian cricket. He led India to a historic Test victory over Australia, breaking their streak of 16 consecutive Test wins in 2001. He was appointed the captain of the Indian Cricket Team in 2000, following a match-fixing scandal involving some players.

Over the years, Sourav faced ups and downs in his career, but he continued to make notable contributions to Indian cricket. After being dropped from the team, he made a successful comeback and went on to score his maiden Test double century against Pakistan in 2007.

Post-retirement, Sourav remained active in the cricketing world. He took up various roles, such as hosting the reality quiz show “Dadagiri Unlimited” and becoming the President of the Cricket Association of Bengal before eventually becoming the President of the BCCI in October 2019.

Sourav Ganguly’s legacy in Indian cricket is significant, both as a player and as an administrator. His impact on the sport continues to be felt, and he remains an influential figure in the cricketing fraternity.

Sourav Ganguly Family

Sourav Ganguly was born on 8th July 1972 in Kolkata, India, to Chandidas and Nirupa Ganguly. His father was a wealthy businessman with a successful print business. However, Sourav’s mother was initially against him pursuing sports and wanted him to focus on academics. Nonetheless, his elder brother Snehashish, who played cricket for Bengal, supported Sourav’s passion for cricket and helped him in building a career in the sport.

Sourav joined a cricket academy where his batting talent was recognized and honed. He later married his childhood sweetheart, Dona Roy, in February 1997, after eloping due to family disagreements. Despite the initial turmoil, their wedding marked a turning point in his ODI career.

He achieved significant milestones in ODI cricket, scoring his maiden century against Sri Lanka and winning consecutive Man of the Match awards. Sourav also made a remarkable impact in the 1999 World Cup, where he scored an impressive 183 runs against Sri Lanka, which remained his highest score in ODI cricket.

Sourav Ganguly Controversies

In the 1991-92 Australian tour, Ganguly made his ODI debut against the West Indies. There were rumors that he had refused to carry drinks for his teammates, leading to his removal from the team. However, Ganguly later clarified in an interview that it was just a rumor.

During his county cricket stint with Lancashire in 2000, Ganguly faced accusations of “princely behaviour.” Stories circulated about him expecting others to carry his kit bag and handing his sweater to a teammate to carry. Andrew Flintoff even compared him to Prince Charles.

In 2001, there were rumors about Ganguly’s alleged affair with actress Nagma, which caused a stir in the media. However, Ganguly’s wife Dona defended him, stating that it was all baseless and defamatory.

Ganguly’s time as captain was not without controversies. His dispute with coach Greg Chappell made headlines, with Chappell questioning Ganguly’s fitness and leadership style, leading to his removal as captain and being dropped from the team. Rahul Dravid took over as the captain.

Throughout his career, Ganguly had several run-ins with authority. He was banned from matches on three occasions for showing dissent to umpire decisions and once for a slow over-rate. These incidents, along with his struggles for runs and captaincy questions, added to the challenges he faced during his playing days.

Sourav Ganguly’s Wife

Before departing during his 1996 England tour, Ganguly reportedly proposed to Dona. On August 12, 1996, the two were legally wed. Dona Ganguly and Sourav Ganguly eloped in 1997. Sourav Ganguly’s Controversies

Refusing to carry drinks for teammates.

Sourav Ganguly made his one-day debut while travelling to Australia with the Indian team in 1991–1992. Up to his reappearance on the trip to England in 1996, he wouldn’t make another appearance abroad for the next four years. On the tour to Australia, it was said that Ganguly refused to carry drinks—one of the duties of a benched player. Later on, Ganguly refuted these claims.

Lancashire Controversy

In 2000, Sourav Ganguly participated in county cricket for Lancashire. He did not fit within the structure, therefore neither he nor his squad had a very memorable experience. One story states that he allegedly handed his sweater to teammate Michael Atherton and asked him to carry it over the line due to his alleged princely behaviour. There were rumours that he had anticipated having someone else carry his gear bag. Additionally, no one from his team could be seen cheering from the dressing room balcony when he once shot a fifty.

Affair with Nagma

Affair with Nagma

In the early months of 2001, as India prepared to host Australia, there were persistent rumours of Sourav Ganguly’s alleged liaison with actress Nagma. There have been rumours that the two visited a South Indian temple and participated in a pooja intended for married couples. Dona, Ganguly’s wife, supported her husband throughout this. Even Chandidas Ganguly, the father of Ganguly, stated to Times of India that he thought the two’s photos had been altered.

Sourav Ganguly received  three match suspensions for expressing disagreement with an umpire’s ruling. The first time it happened was in 1998 when he complained about being sent off during the Australia test in Bangalore. He received a one-day international suspension (ODI). After that, Ganguly received a second suspension in 2000 while Zimbabwe was visiting India for a effort to intimidate the umpires. The most recent instance occurred in 2001 during a tour of Sri Lanka, when he displayed his bat after being called out leg-before. He received yet another ODI ban. In addition, he was once suspended for a total of six games in 2005 for having a slow over rate. That came at a difficult time for him because he was having trouble scoring runs and his captaincy was under scrutiny.

Shirtless Controversy

Sourav Ganguly removed his shirt and waved it in the air as his side celebrated during a dramatic match in which India chased down 326 to win the NatWest series. According to John Wright’s account in the Indian Summers, Harbhajan Singh had intended to do the same for the entire team when Rahul Dravid intervened. That didn’t deter Ganguly, who impulsively lunged for it. It was retaliation for Andrew Flintoff’s comparable behaviour at Wankhede Stadium earlier that year, following England’s thrilling victory over India.

Shane Warne Controversy

After a match between the Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders in Jaipur in 2008, Shane Warne vented his resentment. Warne complained to the media about how his team had to wait for Sourav Ganguly to enter the field in order to begin the batting and how his batsmen had to wait for the other team for a total of five minutes. He also criticised Ganguly for requesting the umpire to determine whether a Rajasthan fielder had taken a catch cleanly.

Sourav Ganguly BCCI Supreme Court

The Supreme Court made a statement in September 2022, granting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) request for a 12-year term of administrators before a cooling-off period begins. This decision will extend the terms of the cricketing organization’s president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah.  Sourav Ganguly and Shah will be free to continue working for BCCI till 2025 thanks to the court judgment. As the BCCI regulations changes, Sourav Ganguly, Jr. Shah can breathe a sigh of relief.

By default, football was famous in Bengal and Sourav naturally started playing football. His parents didn’t want him to take up any sport for a career due to academics. But his elder brother Snehashish was a cricketer for Bengal and helped his brother to build a career in cricket. He joined a cricket academy where his batting talent was acknowledged. From there, he never looked back.

Sourav grabbed the attention of selectors and his hard work paid off. Ganguly was selected to play for the Bengal team in 1989. On the other side, his brother was dropped from the side in the same year. The left-hander came to the spotlight after an imposing show in the Ranji Trophy during 1990-91 season.

International debut

Dada ODI KreedOn

Ganguly made his international debut in 1992. It wasn’t the ideal start as he scored meagre 3 runs against the West Indies at the Gabba, Brisbane. Just after one game, he lost his place from the side and the reason was: he reportedly refused to carry the drinks for the players as he believed that it wasn’t his job. However, Ganguly still denies any such incidents. It was the time when he went back to domestic cricket and worked firmly. The left-hander was a spectacular run maker in the Ranji seasons of 93, 94, and 95 consecutively.

His knock of 171 in the 1995-96 Duleep Trophy, brought him back to the squad. Ganguly got an opportunity to make his Test debut. In the second Test of the England tour that was played at the Lord’s London, he played for the national side for the first time in the whites. In the same game, Rahul Dravid made a debut too. Ganguly scored 131 and that put him on the world map.

Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly Biography For Students

4to40.com May 22, 2019 Biographies for Kids 7,658 Views

Ganguly is a left-handed batsman and a right-handed medium-pace bowler. He is a natural right-hander, but converted to the southpaw stance at a young age so that he could use his left-handed brother, Snehasish Ganguly’s equipment.

Nicknamed Bengal Tiger, Prince of Calcutta and also affectionately called Dada (elder brother in Bengali) by his team-mates and Lord Snooty by his opponents, he is an aggressive player on and off the field. He made his one-day international debut in 1992, but his talents did not truly receive the recognition they deserved until India’s 1996 tour of England when he scored centuries both in his debut Test as well as the next match (the second and third Tests of the series). Ganguly is only the third cricketer ever to score a century on debut at Lord’s, after Harry Graham and John Hampshire (Andrew Strauss has also since accomplished the feat). Rahul Dravid once commented, “On the off-side, first there is God, then there is Ganguly”. He scored 183 against Sri Lanka at Taunton in the 1999 Cricket World Cup, the highest by an Indian in World Cup cricket. He became captain within a year after the world cup and scored 2 centuries in the 2000 champions trophy immediately after. While he has achieved significant successes as captain, his individual performance deteriorated during his captaincy, especially after successes in the world cup and the tour of Australia in 2003 and the Pakistan series in 2004. Following indifferent form in 2004 and poor form form in 2005, he was dropped from the team in October 2005. He has since remained active on the first class cricket scene in hopes of a recall, but his performance has been mixed – he has hit a couple of centuries in domestic cricket, but his English county stint in 2005 and subsequent appearances in the Challenger Trophy were failures.

Consistent batting failures of the Indian cricket team, more so than his own mediocre to good performances in the domestic circuit led to his recall to the Indian Test squad in November 2006. Although India lost 2-1, Sourav Ganguly was the highest run getter for India, and only batsman to hit more than 200 runs in total. On January 12th 2007 he was recalled for the one day squad as well, where India play host to West Indies and Sri Lanka in a one day tournament. On January 21st, Ganguly hit a match winning 98 against the West Indies.

Sourav Ganguly made his international debut against Australia in India’s tour of Australia in 1992. He didn’t score much and was dropped from further matches. Four years later, following a good domestic record, he was recalled into the national side for a Test series against England in England. He made his Test debut at Lords, with a century in that match and repeated the feat in the match which followed. He was retained for the One day team and he went on become a regular in both forms of the game. One of his most memorable performance was in the final of the Independence cup at Dhaka against Pakistan, when the entire Pakistan team walked back in stating bad light along with the umpires, but Ganguly refused to come in. Ganguly scored 124 in that match in darkness, while Hrishikesh Kanitkar scored the winning runs with a boundary.

In 2000, after the match fixing scandal Ganguly was named the captain of the India team. In 2003 under his captaincy India reached the World Cup Final, where they lost to the Australians. Ganguly has scored over 10,000 runs in One Day Cricket and over 5,000 runs in Test cricket, including 12 centuries in Tests and 22 in ODIs. In terms of number of centuries in ODIs, he is exceeded by Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya. Sourav, along with Sachin Tendulkar, formed by far the most successful opening pair in One Day Cricket, having amassed the highest number of century partnerships (16) for the first wicket. Together, they have scored 5,308 runs at an average of 45.37. Sourav has been succeeded by Virender Sehwag as opener.

He is the third player to cross 10,000 ODI runs and so far the fastest one to do so, after Sachin Tendulkar and Inzamam Ul Haq, and reached 6000, 7000, 8000 and 9000 ODI runs milestones in least number of matches played. Sourav can bowl medium-pacers as well, but has under-achieved in this aspect in Test matches, taking 25 wickets in 84 matches, at an average of 52.47. In 2004, he was awarded the Padma Shri. As of 2006, he is the only Indian captain to win a Test series in Pakistan (although two of the three tests of that series was led by Rahul Dravid).

Sourav Ganguly’s 10 year international cricket career could be easily bisected into 2 halves, the pre and the post Y2K eras. The significance of the year 2000 lies not only in the fact that he became the captain of the Indian team but also in the fact that the ICC introduced the one bouncer per over rule in ODIs starting from that year. This introduction of the rule by the ICC had a negative impact on Sourav Ganguly’s batting average, which plunged from a high 45.5 before the year 2000 to a low 34.9 between the 5 year period of 2001-2005. Also, against Test playing nations (which included Zimbabwe and Bangladesh), his overall average plunged further down to 30.66, as did his ‘away’ average which fell to 29. He managed to score only (6) centuries between 2001-2005, of which 3 centuries were against Kenya & 1 was against Namibia. This sudden drop in his batting average against Test playing nations after 2001 was clearly a result of the short pitch stuff he had to encounter from opposition bowlers. As S. Rajesh, the assistant editor of Cricinfo analyzes, Sourav Ganguly has been dismissed numerous times fending off the short ball since 2001 and his average of 11.92 against the short ball has been the lowest among contemporary Indian batsman who played more than 80 ODI matches. The former captain has also been uncomfortable while attempting the ‘pull’ and the ‘hook’ shots when bowlers have dug it in short, often lasting less than five(4.89) balls before being dismissed.

Also, Sourav Ganguly’s Test career had been riddled with lean patches, the first of which stretched for 3 years from Dec 1999 to Dec 2002, during which his batting average fell to 31.7 in 36 consecutive Test matches over 60 innings. The next biggest lean patch of his career occurred after the 2003 World Cup, when his ODI average fell to 28 and this was when his place in the team was questioned by numerous Indian cricket fans. He averaged 23.5 in 20 ODI matches between Sep 2004 and Sep 2005, before being finally dropped from the ODI side.

Despite his hot and cold streaks Sourav Ganguly is only the third Indian Test match batsman to maintain a career average that never dipped below 40 runs per innings for his entire Test career. This is more due to his initial career graph, which plummeted alarmingly in the second half of his career. Whereas his contemporaries like Dravid, Tendulkar, Sehwag and Laxman have shown steady improvement in their career graphs, his own happens to have a pronounced downward trend. The other two who achieved this feat are Sunil Gavaskar and Mohammad Azharuddin.

Sourav Ganguly also shares with G. R. Viswanath of India the record for scoring at least 10 or more centuries and his team either winning or drawing each and every match in which he scored a century. He also shares with Mohammad Azharuddin the record of scoring two consecutive hundreds in his first two Test matches, though Azharuddin bettered that by scoring a third consecutive hundred in his first three Test matches.

Sourav Ganguly has the highest Test and ODI aggregate of any left-handed batsman India has produced and his 12 Test and 22 ODI centuries are also a record for any Indian left-hander.

It was, however, as captain of the Indian team that Sourav Ganguly’s biggest achievements occurred. He led India in a record 49 Test Matches, winning 21 of those, including 12 of them outside India. All three figures are records for Indian Test captains. He also led India to her first series wins in both Tests and ODIs in Pakistan, a feat that had eluded India for over 50 years. Ganguly also led India to more Test wins (11) outside India between 2000 and 2005 than all Indian captains had done between 1980 and 2000. He led India to victory over Steve Waugh led Australia in the 2001 Border-Gavaskar trophy which is considered as one of the greatest in Indian cricket history. However, his captaincy record has no doubt been immensely helped by numerous series against the minnows Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Against other teams, his captaincy record 12 wins and 12 losses, which is still better than other Indian captains. He also benefitted immensely from the peaking of all the great Indian players during his tenure – Sachin, Dravid, Laxman, Sehwag, Kumble, Srinath and Harbhajan.

November 30, 2006, turned out to be lucky for Sourav Ganguly as the national board of selectors, chaired by Dilip Vengsarkar, decided to reinstate him in the team for the three-Test series against South Africa. The decision came after India had been knocked out early of the Champions Trophy, held in India, as well as losing the opening three games of an ODI series with South Africa. The selectors decided to back experience in a total reversal of coach Greg Chappell’s mission to inject fresh blood into the Indian cricket team and Ganguly was selected alongside VVS Laxman and Zaheer Khan, who had also been removed from the Test team recently. Ganguly and Zaheer both fared well. Ganguly emerged as leading run getter for India in the recently concluded Test series with South Africa.

January 12, 2007 Sourav Ganguly was reinstated to the ODI team for the first two ODIs against West Indies. This comes almost after 15 months of his removal from the ODI side in 2005. He staged a good comeback by scoring a match-winning 98 run knock in Nagpur on his return in the first ODI. He was also selected in the 30 probables list for World Cup 2007 to be held in West Indies starting in March. He will most likely open the innings with Tendulkar as Virender Sehwag has been dropped for the first two ODIs.

This was good news to his fans who believed that India’s most successful captain deserved the farewell of a champion. Sourav is a passionate man and fans (possibly selectors too) believe that, after spending ten months in the wilderness, Sourav’s desire to succeed at the highest level and his experience will hold him in good stead.

Controversies

Ganguly is an aggressive player and has often attracted controversy. He has attracted the wrath of match referrees quite a few times, the most severe of which was a ban for 6 matches by ICC match referee Clive Lloyd for slow over rates against Pakistan and therefore his tour to Sri Lanka for the Indian Oil Cup 2005 was uncertain. These circumstances led to Rahul Dravid being made captain for the tour. Later, Justice Albey Sachs reduced the punishment from 6 matches to 4, and this permitted Ganguly to join the team, but as a player and not captain. In his opening match he made the highest score of the side (51) taking (110) balls. He was again named captain for the Zimbabwe tour of August-September 2005. With this, he has captained India in the highest number of Tests (50).

During the 2003 World Cup final against Australia, Ganguly won the toss and decided to field. This decision raised eyebrows but Sourav remained confident that there would be moisture on the pitch that would help his bowlers, however the bowlers flopped and Sourav performed poorly with the bat. India went on to lose by 125 runs, a staggering defeat.

Ganguly’s performance in the last couple of seasons has been really poor. This put his place in the Indian team under pressure. In the tour of Zimbabwe, in which he was newly reinstated as skipper, Ganguly ground out a painfully slow century, against what is regarded as one of the weakest bowling attacks in international cricket. During the match he told reporters that newly-appointed coach Greg Chappell had asked him to stand down as captain – a comment which Chappell later played down. However, forty-eight hours after saying that he respected the Indian captain and looked forward to working with him in the future, Chappell sent an email to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Both Ganguly and Chappell were summoned to a BCCI board meeting in which they agreed to work together for the good of the team. Rahul Dravid was appointed captain for the series against Sri Lanka and South Africa after Ganguly was not selected for the opening games due to injury. When the two series got over, Rahul Dravid was asked to continue as skipper.

On November 22, 2005, Ganguly stepped down as captain of Bengal cricket team after being replaced as captain of the Indian Test team. He played in the first two Test matches in the three-Test series against Sri Lanka. However, on December 14, he was controversially dropped, for the third Test at Ahmedabad, to make way for Wasim Jaffer, an opening batsman for Mumbai. Jaffer was picked by the selectors as they wished to build up a player selection pool with sufficient experience to succeed at international level.

Despite this, he retained his A-grade contract from the BCCI, in December 2005.

Following the drop, fans blocked roads and railway tracks in Kolkata, burning effigies of chief selector Kiran More and Indian coach Chappell, and the urban development minister of West Bengal, Asoke Bhattacharya, said Ganguly was a victim of the internal politics of the BCCI. [9] Cricinfo editor Sambit Bal wrote in a commentary that this was in all probability … the end of the road for him. [10] However, it was announced on December 25, 2005 that he was selected as part of the Indian team to tour Pakistan. Kiran More cited his experience as the key reason, with Mohammed Kaif being dropped [11]. He was in the playing XI in the Lahore and Karachi Tests, but was dropped for the Faisalabad match, and has not been recalled since. He was unable to play in the England home series and the West Indies tour. He was also not selected for the following Tri-series in Sri Lanka. However, he was chosen amongst 30 probables for the ICC Champions Trophy after being left out in the dark for almost close to a year. Ganguly failed in the Challenger Trophy, however, managing less than 30 runs in two games, and so the chances of recall to the ODI side look bleak.

Ganguly later sent an email hitting out at his one time mentor saying that Jagmohan Dalmiya did not deserve to become CAB president as he had played with his career and that Ganguly was a victim of internal politics within the BCCI. This was in the backdrop of the CAB elections which Jagmohan Dalmiya won.

After being dropped from the side for almost eight months, Ganguly was recalled to the Test team for the series against South Africa in December 2006, after an injury to Yuvraj Singh. And after the recall, in his first warm up match against rest of South Africa, he scored fantastic 83 runs when his team was in troublesome position at 69/5. this knock helped India win against rest of South Africa.

He went on to play a crucial knock in the first test match, scoring 51 not out in the first innings in a low scoring game. India went on to win the match, its first win in South African soil for 17 years. Though India ended up losing the next two test matches and thus the series, Ganguly emerged as the top run scorer for India, with an aggregate of 214.

Selected for the one-day team after his successful Test comeback, he started the series against West Indies with a fluent 98, which led to India winning the match. He played his last international ODI before 500 days. After being rested for the third ODI, he again answered his critics with a sparkling 68 in the final ODI to help India win the series 3-1.
