Biological Sciences and Evolutionary Biology Ranked Among Best Graduate Programs by U.S. News and World Report

  • by Elizabeth Forrest Lambert
  • March 29, 2022

UC Davis graduate and professional degree programs are recognized among the best in the country, according to the U.S. News & World Report’s 2023 edition of Best Graduate Schools. The updated rankings were released on Monday, March 28.

U.S. News ranks some disciplines annually and others periodically. The new rankings are for business, law, education, engineering, medicine, nursing, and science and mathematics disciplines. Each set of rankings is based on different types of data, including expert opinions relating to a program’s academic excellence and statistical indicators that assess students and faculty achievements.

This year, over 40 disciplines and specialty areas received updated graduate rankings. Here are some of the highlights from this year’s list.

The Graduate School of Management’s Full-Time MBA continues to be ranked among the premier programs in the nation at 52nd. The Part-Time MBA, offered in Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area, is 27th in the ranking of part-time programs.

The School of Education earned the 32nd spot.

The School of Law placed 37th among almost 200 American Bar Association-approved law schools. In the specialty categories, it ranked in the top 25 for environmental, constitutional, criminal and business-corporate law.

The 2023 rankings placed the School of Medicine at eighth for primary care and seventh for family medicine. In public health, UC Davis broke into the top 20 doctoral programs.

This is the second consecutive year the medical school is included in the top five for the diversity of its student body. In fact, UC Davis was the only medical school in the top five for diversity on the West Coast.

The diversity ranking is based on enrollment of underrepresented minority, groups, or URM, defined as Hispanic/Latinx, Black/African American, American Indian/Alaskan Native or Asian Pacific Islander, and its comparison to the state’s demographics. The school reported a total URM enrollment of 40% in 2021, the period considered for the ranking.

The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing ranks 23rd  — its second year among the top 25 — for master’s-degree nursing programs overall and seventh in the specialty of family nurse practitioner master's programs.

Engineering

The College of Engineering earned the rank of 35th, while its biological (third) and civil engineering (13th) programs were ranked among the best in the country. The college is 27th in computer engineering.

Over a dozen areas of study in science and mathematics received updated rankings this year. In the biological sciences, UC Davis is 17th overall, representing an increase since last year’s rankings, which placed biological sciences at 18th.  The campus also held onto its second-place rank in ecology and evolutionary biology.

In statistics, the campus ranks 13th. In biostatistics, it is 24th.

UC Davis is 30th in chemistry. The campus earned the 19th spot in earth sciences and debuted in two new specialties, geochemistry and environmental sciences, with 25th and eighth placements, respectively.

Overall, psychology is ranked 12th. In the new cognitive psychology and developmental psychology specialities, UC Davis placed 11th and ninth respectively.

In other rankings, UC Davis is 26th for graduate programs in economics.

UW Retains Top 10 National Research Ranking

biology phd programs ranked

The National Science Foundation has released its 2019 fiscal year Higher Education Research and Development Survey , or HERD, data, showing that the University of Wisconsin–Madison ranked 8th place in the national research rankings for public and private universities. UW–Madison also ranked 8 th in the last survey covering the 2018 fiscal year.

Among public universities, UW–Madison ranked 6 th , the same ranking as in fiscal year 2018.

Data on UW–Madison’s 2019 expenditures for research show the university increased its annual expenditures over the previous year, reporting nearly $1.3 billion in annual expenditures for research across all fields, about half of which comes from federal awards. That is an increase of nearly $92 million from fiscal year 2018.

The HERD survey is the primary source of information on research and development expenditures at American universities and colleges. Tabulating expenditures is one way to measure academic research activity.

The survey collects information on R&D expenditures by field of research and source of funds, and also gathers information on types of research expenses and number of R&D personnel. The survey is an annual census of institutions that spent at least $150,000 on separately budgeted research and development during the fiscal year.

In fiscal year 2019, more than 900 universities responded to the survey.

“UW–Madison is committed to sustaining its position as an innovation leader, as is evident by our investment in growing our faculty and launching new research initiatives to seed projects so they are more competitive for extramural funding,” says Steve Ackerman, vice chancellor for research and graduate education. “I’m especially proud that our campus research community provides a backbone to the Wisconsin Idea in areas such as timely and critical public health response. This is demonstrated by the university’s research related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and also through our efforts to engage in fundamental research to ensure significant continuing advances in the arts, education, STEM and the social sciences.”

Funding for academic research at UW–Madison comes primarily from the federal government as well as institutional funds. Additional sources include state and local government, industry, nonprofit organizations, and foundations that support the university. The two most significant private contributors of research support to UW–Madison are the  Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation  and the  UW Foundation .

While the HERD Survey tracks expenditures, it is not the only leading indicator of UW–Madison’s research and scholarly success. The university has recently received additional prestigious ratings.

For instance, UW–Madison graduate programs were once again ranked among the nation’s best in the 2021 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s “ Best Graduate Schools .” Highlights include the School of Education, which ranked fourth nationwide (tied for first among public universities); and the School of Pharmacy, which ranked seventh. Two programs were ranked first nationwide, both within the School of Education: Curriculum and Instruction, and Printmaking.

“Our investment in new technologies and upgrading research infrastructure attracts top faculty and students, provides a training ground for the scientists and engineers of tomorrow, and allows us to advance science and propel whole fields forward,” explains Ackerman. Facilities improvements are reflected in UW–Madison’s top five placement on the National Science Foundation biannual Survey of Science and Engineering Research Facilities.

Hiring and construction have also been underway for several years to enhance and complement UW–Madison’s strengths in cryo-electron microscopy, structural biology and biomedical research. In late 2020, UW–Madison was selected by the National Institutes of Health to serve as a national cryo-EM research and training hub, supported by $22.7 million in funding over six years. This spring, the campus Cryo-EM Research Center will open.

UW–Madison also recently celebrated the opening of the 67,540-square-foot  Meat Science and Animal Biologics Discovery Building , a project made possible by an investment of more than $57 million from 256 donors and the state of Wisconsin.
