Quizlet is part gaming platform, part quiz, and part teaching tool. Crucially, it's built with all three in mind and, as such, offers a superb balance that makes it a valuable tool to use in education.

This will adaptively learn and change to suit the student, making it a teaching assistant that can help instruct, but also assess the areas in which students may need help.

Quizlet offers visual materials, fill-in-the-blank-style games, and more. Importantly, the company points out that 90 percent of students who use it end up getting higher grades -- so it appears to work.

While this used to offer a lot of free materials, the pay structure has tightened up. But with the use of AI tools it also offers more resources than ever before.

Read on to find out everything you need to know about Quizlet for teachers.

What is Quizlet?

At its most basic, Quizlet is a digital pop-quiz database. It features more than 300 million study sets, each one being like a deck of flash cards. It's also interactive, with the ability to create your own study set, or clone and edit those of others.

Verified Creators, as they're called, also create and share study sets. These come from curriculum publishers and educational institutions so you know they will be of a high caliber.

Quizlet

Quizlet is sectionalized by subject so it can easily be navigated to find a specific study target. Lots of these use flashcard-style layouts that offer a prompt or question that the student can select to flip over to get the answer.

But there are various options that let you learn more from the same data in different ways. So you could select "learn" instead of "flashcards," and then the question would be given only with multiple choice answers, for a more active learning approach.

What's new in Quizlet?

Quizlet is often updating what it has to offer and it now has a new design overhaul with the idea of making everything more engaging for students and teachers alike.

Some previously free-to-access sections are no longer there since both the Learn and the Test Modes requires you to have a Quizlet Plus account to get access.

The use of AI-powered tools has resulted in a huge amount of new materials available in recent months, and the company says that's only going to continue to grow.

How does Quizlet work?

Quizlet is broken down into several styles, including:

Flashcards are pretty self explanatory, like real ones, with a question on one side and the answer on the other.

Learn puts questions and answers into multiple choice-style quizzes that can be completed to get an overall result. This applies to images, too.

Spell will speak aloud a word and the student is then required to type out the spelling of it.

Test is an auto-generated mix of questions with written, multiple choice, and true-or-false answer options.

Match has you pairing up correct words or a mix of words and images.

Gravity is a game that has asteroids with words coming at a planet you need to protect by typing out the words before they hit.

Live is a game mode that allows for multiple students to work collaboratively.

Quizlet

What are the best Quizlet features?

Quizlet has all those excellent modes that allow for a variety of ways to get information across for learning across a broad range of subjects.

The smart adaptive nature of Quizlet is a really powerful feature. The Learn mode uses data from millions of anonymous sessions and then generates adaptive study plans designed to improve learning.

Quizlet offers a lot of support for English language learners and students with learning differences. Select a word or definition, and it will be read aloud. Or, in the case of teacher accounts, attach your own audio recording. It's also possible to add visual learning aids to cards with specific images or custom diagrams.

Quizlet has a plethora of media that can be used, including a huge pool of licensed Flickr photography. Music can also be added, allowing for very targeted learning. Or teachers may find something ideal that has already been created and is available in the selection of shared online quizzes.

Quizlet Live is superb as students are given codes and once they sign in they're randomly grouped for a game to start. For each question, a selection of possible answers appear on teammates' screens, but only one of them has the right answer. Students must work together to determine which is the correct one. At the end, a snapshot is provided for teachers to see how well the students have understood the material.

How much does Quizlet cost?

Quizlet is free to sign-up to and start using.

For teachers, it's charged at $34 per year to get extra features, such as the ability to upload your own images and to record you own voice – both powerful options if you want the freedom to create your own study sets from scratch.

Teachers can also track learner activity with formative assessments and homework as well. Teachers can also adapt Quizlet Live, organize classes, use the app, and have no ads.

My Students and I Just Love This Online Quiz Tool

Here’s why.

Quizlet in the Classroom

From where you should vacation next to which Hogwarts house you belong to, everyone loves taking an online quiz. Maybe that’s why both my students and I love Quizlet , an EdTech website. Not familiar with this amazing tool? Quizlet is a FREE web- and mobile-based study app that can be used in all grades and subject areas. You can also upgrade to a Quizlet Teacher account for $35.99 a year.

With Quizlet, there are so many options for you and your students to use. Here are six ways you can put this program into action in your classroom:

1. Vocabulary study

You (or your students) can create digital flash cards by putting the vocabulary word on one side and the definition on the other. Students can also use the Match option to practice matching the vocabulary word with the correct definition.

2. Review specific skills

assign quizlet for homework

In ELA, if students are learning about text structure, you can create a set with different examples of text structures on one side and the answers on the other. Take it a step further and have students create their own sets, providing examples and then identifying them. In math, you might create multiplication sets to help students master their multiplication tables.

[contextly_auto_sidebar]

3. Assessment

Use the Quizlet Test feature to assess students on skills they are learning in class. The teacher can set the correct and incorrect answers, and then the assessment will be graded automatically, leaving less work for the teacher.

4. Differentiation

Easily differentiate by creating specific study sets for students based on learning level. For example, the teacher can provide students who need more assistance with a link to a study set that offers more help. The more advanced students can be provided with a separate set that requires more thought.

5. Collaboration

I love using Quizlet for group projects. For example, let’s say you’re doing a STEM project where the end result will be for students to create rockets. Put students into groups and then assign each group member a specific area to research. The first student could come up with five to 10 materials that would be needed to build the rocket. Then that student would create a study set with a description of the material on one side and a picture of the material on the other. The second student would research why NASA launches rockets into space and then do a description of each reason on one side of the study set. On the other side would be an image that represents each reason. The third student could look into what powers rockets. A list of the various chemicals that do this could go on one side of the study set, and the other would be a picture of the chemicals. Student four could research different rocket launches that have occurred and then create a study set for each rocket launch. One side would have the name of the launch, and the other would have a description of when it occurred and what purpose it served.

6. Quizlet Live

assign quizlet for homework

This is always a favorite with students. Quizlet Live can be launched with any study set. Students don’t need accounts to participate. They simply go to Quizlet Live and then type in the unique code the teacher gives them. Once all students have joined, they are randomly put into groups. Then the game can begin. For each question, possible answers appear on teammates’ screens; however, only one member of the team has the correct answer. Students work together to communicate and determine which teammate has the correct answer. At the end of the game, teachers receive a snapshot that shows how well students understood the material.

Your Guide to Administering Tests and Quizzes in WebAssign

person's hands on laptop and coffee and laptop says "online test"

Do you have to quickly develop a strategy to test your students in a virtual environment? We have your back!  WebAssign features a wide range of testing restrictions that allow you to create an assessment or turn any assignment into a quiz, test or even high stakes exam.

Keep reading to learn how to create your quiz, test or assessment and optimize your settings for student success.

1. Create an Assignment Category for Quizzes and/or Tests

By setting your assignment category and choosing a template, you’ll be able to have predetermined settings you can apply to any new test or quiz you create.

WebAssign’s  default Assignment Templates for quizzes, tests and exams allow students fewer submission attempts than homework assignments and disable learning tools like eBook links and videos until after the due date.

2. Create Your Test and Questions

There are a variety of ways you can create quizzes and tests within WebAssign . You can create a custom test with all new questions, use a pre-built assessment included in your textbook’s Course Packs or convert an existing assignment into a test format. Let’s break down each approach so you can see how they work:

Create a New Test with all New Questions

This option takes the most amount of time, but it gives you the opportunity to individually select each question you’d like to include in your test. If you’d like to create a new custom assessment, follow these steps:

  • Create a  new assignment  and under Assignment Settings, select your test template identified in step 1.
  • Find your questions – through the  question browser  or by  creating your own.
  • Add your questions to the test.

Use a Pre-built Assessment from Your Course Packs

Course Packs are a set of pre-built assignments available with most textbooks. Find and download your Course Packs from your Class schedule page, and choose the assessment you’d like to use.

WebAssign Tip:  You can preview assignments in your Course Packs by clicking on them.

Convert an Existing Assignment into a Test

3. Customize Your Test Settings

You can further refine your exam template  to customize the testing experience with a variety of different settings. Things to consider:

  • Do you want your students  to submit the entire assessment at once  to better simulate an on-campus exam?   If so, you can easily do this by navigating to Submissions and Work and using the Submitting Answers drop-down to select ‘Assignment,’ meaning all answers for the assignment will be submitted at once.
  • Do you want to scramble the order of the questions on the assessment for each student?  If so, under  Assignment Display , select Random from the Question Order drop-down.
  • Do you want students to immediately know if they got each question right or wrong?   Consider  configuring correct/incorrect marks  under Learning Tools so it only displays after the test due date.
  • Do you want to review students’ work as part of the test?   Enable  Show My Work  either for all the questions on the assignment, or  for specific questions .  Marking Show My Work as required will let you manually add (or subtract) points based on the student’s detailed submission.

WebAssign Tip:  If you’ve decided to customize one of WebAssign’s default templates or create your own, make sure to  save the template  for your personal use later or to  apply it to any other assignments  that you want to use as a test!

4. Configure Assignment/Testing Restrictions

assign quizlet for homework

  • Identify the assignment that you want to apply the restrictions to from your ClassView page and select the schedule option next to it.
  • You’ll be taken to the Schedule page for that specific assignment.
  • Click the blue action menu icon next to the assignment name and select ‘Edit Restrictions’ from the menu.

Available Restrictions

You can choose any of these restrictions, or choose multiple restrictions, on any assignment:

  • Schedule a Timed Assignment :  Give your students a specific amount of time to complete an assignment. If your students are working on the assignment when the time expires, all their responses are automatically submitted so they do not miss any points. After the time has expired, your students cannot do any more work on the assignment.
  • Password Protect an Assignment :  Students can only begin working on an assignment once you tell them the password.  This restriction is ideal for ensuring all students are taking the test at the same time.
  • Schedule a LockDown Browser Restricted Assignment :  To help prevent cheating, you can restrict your students’ computer activities while they are working on a quiz or test by requiring that the assignment be opened in the free  WebAssign  LockDown Browser®. While an assignment is open in LockDown Browser, your students cannot use instant messaging, search the Internet, print, copy text, or use other applications on their computer.  Note: students must download and install LockDown Browser before they begin the test, so it is recommended you schedule a practice assignment so students can test their system to avoid additional testing anxiety.
  • IP Restrict an Assignment:  You can restrict any assignment so students are required to use a specific set of IP addresses to access it.  This restriction is ideal of exams delivered in a proctored environment, or for students required to use institutional devices from home.

Assigning Homework in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

A counselor discusses this week's therapy homework with a man in blue.

It’s certainly true that therapy outcomes depend in part on the work taking place in each session. But for this progress to reach its full impact, clients need to use what they learn in therapy during their daily lives.

Assigning therapy “homework” can help your clients practice new skills during the week. While many types of therapy may involve some form of weekly assignment, homework is a key component of cognitive behavior therapy.

Types of Homework

Some clients may respond well to any type of homework, while others may struggle to complete or find benefit in certain assignments. It’s important for clients to step outside of their comfort zone in some ways. For example, it’s essential to learn to challenge unwanted thoughts and increase understanding of feelings and emotions, especially for people who struggle with emotional expression.

But there isn’t just one way to achieve these goals. Finding the right type of homework for each client can make success more likely.

There are many different types of therapy homework. Asking your client to practice breathing exercises when they feel anxious or stressed? That’s homework. Journaling about distressing thoughts and ways to challenge them, or keeping track of cognitive distortions ? Also homework.

Some clients may do well with different assignments each week, while others may have harder times with certain types of homework. For example:

  • An artistic client may not get much from written exercises. They might, however, prefer to sketch or otherwise illustrate their mood, feelings, or reactions during the week.
  • Clients who struggle with or dislike reading may feel challenged by even plain-language articles. If you plan to assign educational materials, ask in your first session whether your client prefers audio or written media.

When you give the assignment, take a few minutes to go over it with your client. Give an example of how to complete it and make sure they understand the process. You’ll also want to explain the purpose of the assignment. Someone who doesn’t see the point of a task may be less likely to put real effort into it. If you give a self-assessment worksheet early in the therapy process, you might say, “It can help to have a clear picture of where you believe you’re at right now. Later in therapy I’ll ask you to complete another assessment and we can compare the two to review what’s changed.”

Mental Health Apps

Some people may also find apps a useful way to develop and practice emotional wellness coping skills outside of therapy. Therapy apps can help people track their moods, emotions, or other mental health symptoms. They can provide a platform to practice CBT or other therapy skills. They can also offer structured mindfulness meditations or help clients practice other grounding techniques.

If you’re working with a client who’s interested in therapy apps, you might try using them in treatment. Just keep in mind that not all apps offer the same benefits. Some may have limitations, such as clunky or confusing interfaces and potential privacy concerns. It’s usually a good idea to check whether there’s any research providing support for—or against—a specific app before recommending it to a client.

Trusted mental health sources, such as the American Psychological Association or Anxiety and Depression Association of America websites, may list some popular mental health apps, though they may not specifically endorse them. These resources can be a good starting place. Other organizations, including Northwestern University’s Center for Behavioral Intervention Technologies and the Defense Department of the United States, have developed their own research-backed mental health apps.

You can also review apps yourself. Try out scenarios or options within the app to get to know how the app works and whether it might meet your client’s needs. This will put you in a position to answer their questions and help give them tips on getting the most out of the app.

Benefits of Homework

Some of your clients may wonder why you’re assigning homework. After all, they signed up for therapy, not school.

When clients ask about the benefits of therapy homework, you can point out how it provides an opportunity to put things learned in session into practice outside the therapy session. This helps people get used to using the new skills in their toolbox to work through issues that come up for them in their daily lives. More importantly, it teaches them they can use these skills on their own, when a therapist or other support person isn’t actively providing coaching or encouragement. This knowledge is an important aspect of therapy success.

A 2010 review of 23 studies on homework in therapy found evidence to suggest that clients who completed therapy homework generally had better treatment outcomes. This review did have some limitations, such as not considering the therapeutic relationship or how clients felt about homework. But other research supports these findings, leading many mental health experts to support the use of therapy homework, particularly in CBT. Homework can be one of many effective tools in making therapy more successful.

Improving Homework Compliance

You may eventually work with a client who shows little interest in homework and doesn’t complete the assignments. You know this could impede their progress in therapy, so you’ll probably want to bring this up in session and ask why they’re having difficulty with the homework. You can also try varying the types of homework you assign or asking if your client is interested in trying out a mental health app that can offer similar benefits outside your weekly sessions.

When you ask a client about homework non-compliance, it’s important to do it in a way that doesn’t anger them, make them feel defensive, or otherwise damage the relationship you’re working to develop. Here are some tips for having this conversation:

  • Let them know homework helps them practice their skills outside of therapy. In short, it’s helping them get more out of therapy (more value for their money) and may lead to more improvement, sometimes in a shorter period of time than one weekly session would alone.
  • Bring up the possibility of other types of homework. “If you don’t want to write anything down, would you want to try listening to a guided meditation or tips to help manage upsetting emotions?”
  • Ask about it, in a non-confrontational way. You might say something like, “Is something making it difficult for you to complete the homework assignments? How can I help make the process easier for you?”

The prospect of homework in therapy may surprise some clients, but for many people, it’s an essential element of success. Those put off by the term “homework” may view “skills practice” or similar phrasing more favorably, so don’t feel afraid to call it something else. The important part is the work itself, not what you call it.    References:
