Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramhansa Yogananda talks about miracles, the yogic teachings, and the teachings of Jesus Christ in a modern way — a way that is easy to understand and even entertaining. For someone interested in spirituality, or even just alternate ways of looking at life, it’s incredibly illuminating.

The world is a different place than it would have been without this book. The New Age movement in the West, the impact the book has had on leaders in many fields, and the rise in the practice of yoga and meditation are due in large part to Yogananda’s influence and the influence of his autobiography.

Philip Goldberg wrote in American Veda that “Among the people I interviewed about their key spiritual influences, a high percentage named a book, and by far the book most often mentioned was Yogananda’s unique memoir. A distant second was Be Here Now by Ram Dass, and he mentioned the Autobiography .”

Sometimes people read it and have their life turned around entirely. It’s a book that, like other scripture, inspires life-long devotion.

Anyone who is interested should read it. It is a great book in every sense of the word.

श्रीश्री परमहंस योगानंदजी का जन्म 5 जनवरी, 1883 को गोरखपुर (उ.प्र.) में हुआ। उन्होंने अपना जीवन सभी जातियों एवं धर्मों के लोगों को, उनके जीवन में मानवीय चैतन्य की सुंदरता, सुसंस्कृति एवं सच्ची दिव्यता के अनुभव एवं पूर्ण अभिव्यक्त में सहायता के लिए समर्पित किया।

1915 में कोलकाता विश्वविद्यालय से स्नातक की उपाधि प्राप्त करने के बाद श्रीश्री योगानंदजी को उनके गुरु श्रीश्री स्वामी श्रीयुक्तेश्वर गिरिजी ने संन्यास की दीक्षा दी। श्रीयुक्तेश्वरजी ने भविष्यवाणी की थी कि भारत की प्राचीन क्रियायोग ध्यान प्रविधि का संपूर्ण विश्व में प्रचार करना ही उनके जीवन का विशिष्ट उद्देश्य होगा। उन्होंने सन् 1920 में अमेरिका के बोस्टन शहर में होने वाले धार्मिक उदारवादियों के अंतरराष्ट्रीय सम्मेलन में भारत के प्रतिनिधि के रूप में भाग लिया। परमहंस योगानंदजी ने अपनी शिक्षाओं के प्रसार के लिए ‘योगदा सत्संग सोसाइटी ऑफ इंडिया/सेल्फ-रियलाइजेशन फैलोशिप’ की स्थापना की। अपने लेखों एवं भारत, अमेरिका तथा यूरोप के सघन दौरों में अपने व्याख्यानों द्वारा तथा अनेक आश्रम व ध्यान-केंद्र बनाकर उनके माध्यम से उन्होंने हजारों सत्यान्वेषियों को योग के प्राचीन विज्ञान एवं दर्शन से तथा इसकी सर्वानुकूल ध्यान पद्धतियों से परिचित करवाया। परमहंसजी 7 मार्च, 1952 को लॉस एंजेल्स में महासमाधि में लीन हुए।
