I just finished making my character for Dragon’s Dogma 2 thanks to the free character creator demo released ahead of the game, and I’m overjoyed at how gloriously, convincingly old I can be in this game. I feel very seen and very represented.
I know this might sound a bit rich coming from a bearded, straight white man. But as a member of Generation X — I’ll be 50 this year — I belong to, arguably, the first generation to grow up on video games. And as we age, it sometimes feels as though we’re being quietly edged out, or at least ignored, by the medium we love. But a 2020 study by the Interactive Software Federation of Europe found that 31% of 45-to-64-year-olds play video games; our numbers are growing, and the demographic tsunami of retirement-age gamers is slowly building and will probably hit the industry in the next decade or so.
Video games may no longer be seen as literal child’s play, but they’re still perceived as a young person’s pastime. Some game design innovations have made it easier to keep up — particularly the advent of handhelds like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck, which are so much more compatible with busy family life than a PC or console. However, when it comes to playable characters in games, representation of older people has been somewhat limited. In mainstream action adventures, you can be a grizzled, male silver fox like Geralt in The Witcher or Joel in The Last of Us , or you can be hot and young. As far as character creators go, you can be hot and young, or you can be hot and young with bright white hair and wrinkles that look like they’ve been painted on.
That’s not the case with the Dragon’s Dogma 2 character creator; it’s a marvel. Look at those deeply wrinkled faces, speaking of decades of adventure and wisdom gained! Look at the range of body types, which contains the usual variations on fit and muscular, but also “rangy and pigeon-chested,” “a bit paunchy, had too much pie,” and “I’ve seen some shit and not in a good way.” Look at the necks, which can be fat or saggy or scrawny, and aren’t all just triangles of muscle. Check out the revolutionary posture controls, which let you give yourself the slight stoop and shambling gait of an exhausted parent. It warms my cockles! These are actually older-looking bodies with older-looking skin — not just the wireframes of younger bodies that have been reskinned with the signifiers of age.
If I have a note, it’s about the range of hairstyles, which could feature more receding hairlines, more thinning hair, and a wider range of more convincing grays, as well as more suitable styles for older women. Still, I was delighted to find my own style included: “completely bald on top but letting it grow out a bit because fuck it.” Usually, your only options are bald as a cue ball, Justin Bieber’s hair but white, or Ed Harris in Love Lies Bleeding .
I want to be clear that this is not just about representation for older gamers (or middle-aged gamers who are becoming increasingly aware of the relentless march of time). It can be about your role-playing taste, too. I’ve always been someone who just enjoys being an old dude in games. My main World of Warcraft character is a bald troll with a mullet of pure white hair — the trolls’ stooping gait and gnarly, big-nosed visage make them look convincing as older characters. Invariably, I try to make my characters look old, not because I feel old, but because I have a natural urge to warp video games’ stereotypically youthful portrayal of physical heroism into something more weathered or dignified. I also think old people are cool and hard-won experience is awesome.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 fulfills my dreams of being the ultimate older character in a video game. Capcom, you have the thanks of my generation of gamers. When our time comes — when we have nothing but free time, and nothing to spend our pensions on but video games — we won’t forget this.

Inside The Art of Dustborn, Classic Comic Inspiration and Nailing Representation
- Dustborn is the new narrative driven action-adventure game developed by Red Thread Games and published under the label Spotlight by Quantic Dream.
- Coming to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One on August 20
- The game’s Art Director, Christoffer Grav, gives an exclusive interview on the game’s unique graphic novel art style
Dustborn is a new narrative title coming to Xbox later this year, an explosive adventure in which a group of misfits with superhuman powers attempt to cross a dystopian America to deliver a mysterious package. As the Art Director at the studio Red Thread Games, Christoffer Grav has played a key role in shaping Dustborn , not only its memorable characters and dialogue, but the unique aesthetic of its world is also at the heart of the game’s experience.
Imagined by the game’s Creative Director Ragnar Tørnquist, Dustborn initially took on a dark tone, before evolving to focus on the interpersonal connections between lead character Pax and her crew: “The art direction was initially a bit more gloomy and pessimistic – it was not cell-shaded or in a comic book style,” admits Grav.
However, as the story became lighter and more focused on human connections, Dustborn began to “look more positive with bright colors, a cleaner look, and a colorful palette” according to Grav. “I wanted to go in that direction because it’s my own style as an illustrator, very comic book influenced. I wanted to do something that felt super close to me. I basically wanted to bring my 2D style to the 3D space.”
A product of the 80s and their pop aesthetics, Grav brought a vibrant tone to Dustborn , inspired by past influences, “I’m a nerd for Disney, always have been. And I was this huge comic geek when I was younger; while growing up in Norway, my grandfather used to collect French and Belgian comics, like Asterix and Tintin.”
Grav’s mood board also featured many artworks from the French comic book legend Moebius, which he discovered through his grandfather’s comic collection. As he grew older, he also took inspiration from American creators: “There were not many comics imported to Norway when I was a kid, but eventually we got an official translation of [Todd McFarlane’s] Spawn, it was one of the first American comics to be sold in grocery stores, and it just blew my mind! The art, the story, I quickly tried to emulate that style.”
As more American comics made their way to Oslo, Grav devoured them, “I started collecting comics like Gen 13, Witchblade… So, it’s nice to take inspiration from so many different works with Dustborn. Of course, today many games are inspired by comics, but I hope my work will stand out for the way it mixes influences from both America and Europe, with their clear lines.”
The game’s comic inspired aesthetics accentuate the subversive side of Dustborn, which takes place in a dystopian Justice-driven ‘Divided States of America’, filled with dystopian propaganda. It was a playground for an artist educated as a graphic designer: “Of course I took inspiration from past world conflicts and dictatorships, but it’s more something looming in the background. There’s no big bad guy in Dustborn , it’s more about the people and the way they interact with each other. That’s why Justice officers have a smile on their face: the State wants them to be seen as a positive force. They even have a mascot! With Dustborn , I’ve really put a variety of influences across all mediums, from anime, to movies, series, books, comics, through many decades that inspired me,” explains Grav.
Finally, the crew. Pax and the members of her found family each bring their unique contribution to the table, with their complementary powers, identities, strong points of view and yes, flaws. Humans, after all. To achieve its narrative and artistic goals, Dustborn brought together a diverse group of writers and voice actors, and the team is committed to including a wide range of perspectives in the game.
“Representation is super important to me; growing up as a gay person, there was nothing on TV or in entertainment that reflected my experience,” explained Grav. “As a queer kid, I went through hard times at school and, seeing the direction the world is heading today with LGBTQ+ and other fundamental rights still at risk, I think it’s even more important to focus on representation, especially in video games.”
When working on Dustborn , Grav and his teammates would often challenge each other to bring more perspectives to the experience while ensuring they were authentically representing the game’s characters. They wanted to create a game that portrays the diversity of the world we live in, with a variety of genders, ethnicities, sexual orientations, appearances, attitudes – a game that would have made younger Grav feel included. Before ending, he shared his hope that “people will see themselves in these characters or be inspired by them.” Quite an achievement for the kid who dreamt of seeing himself in comic books, games and beyond.

The Boys Made Homelander Even Better By Gender-Swapping 3 Comic Characters
- Three gender-swapped characters in The Boys enhance Homelander's character arc.
- Gender-swapping Stillwell, Stormfront, and Neuman developed Homelander and added depth.
- The addition of more women in The Boys improves overall representation but may not allow them to develop their own stories.
To those only keeping track of The Boys TV show, it may come as a surprise that three of the most prominent women on the show were originally male characters in the comics. These changes to the cast of The Boys were meaningful for the show's most intense supe: Homelander. Born a supe through artificial means, Homelander never had a true parent, and this detail is an important part of his character. Homelander's origins are as horrible as they are revealing. The trauma of being raised by scientists as nothing more than an experiment manifests in Homelander's relationships with women.
Some of Homelander's most important scenes are with women who might never have existed if the show had written every character exactly as they appeared in the comics, a concept that will surely be explored further in The Boys ' forthcoming season 4 . For example, Homelander's relationship with Madelyn Stillwell is short-lived due to his own actions, but until Stillwell's gruesome and untimely death, Homelander treats Stillwell like a sexualized replacement for the mother he never had . The original Stillwell from the comics could never have delivered the kind of context for Homelander that Madelyn offers.
The Boys Creator's Story Regret Explains 1 Major Live-Action Change
The boys tv show gender-swaps 3 characters from the comics, the showrunners attempt to address a representation issue.
Introducing several newly-turned women to The Boys was intentional. The show's creators knew that The Boys ' comics had a history of "fridging" women , and they sought to avoid the same tropes and criticisms. Stormfront, Victoria Neumann, and Madelyn Stillwell are all adapted from male characters in the comics, and as women, they relate to Homelander in ways their male predecessors could not. In fact, the influence these characters have on the show's version of Homelander is their biggest contribution to the series. While the characters themselves have great potential, their canonical storylines tend to be flimsy.
The unfortunate side effect of including women for the sake of gender diversity — as opposed to including them because they have value on their own merits — is that these characters don't have much to offer outside their relationships with men. Those relationships are not always romantic or sexual but are still usually the most interesting thing about an artificially adapted female character. If they're given the opportunity to shine independently of the male character to whom they've previously been attached, there is typically a lot of work for the writers to do to fully flesh out a previously shallow character.
Changing These Characters' Genders Makes Homelander's Character Arc Even Better
The treatment of women in the boys isn't great, but there's a reason for that.
Vought Industries' diversity issues are a subject of criticism in the show, but in real life, The Boys makes a point of including women in important roles. The Boys has no shortage of women among the main cast. The women who interact with Homelander are used for a particular purpose: developing his character. These women make Homelander more compelling; they decorate his personality and demonstrate how obsessive and damaged he is. Their existence makes Homelander far more multidimensional. The gender-swapped characters of Stillwell, Stormfront, and Neuman have a particular impact on Homelander’s character and how he is perceived.
The dynamic between Homelander and Madelyn Stillwell is one where the power is constantly shifting. Without Homelander's relationship with Stillwell, his character's vulnerability might never be exposed. When Stormfront enters Homelander's world, he feels he has met someone who understands his ruthlessness and passion . Without Stormfront, Homelander would feel less validated, which could affect his confidence. In a complicated series of exchanges with Victoria Neuman, Homelander reveals the depths of his ability to calculate and execute his plans to get exactly what he wants. Without Neuman, Homelander's ability to strategize may not have been highlighted as clearly.
The Boys Fixes A Comic Complaint By Adding More Women
The women of the boys are plentiful, but they exist as props.
The issue of comics representation has been addressed with the addition of more women to The Boys , and although Stillwell died at the hands of Homelander and Stormfront almost died, simply having a larger number of women in the show has helped improve The Boys ' treatment of women overall . Stillwell and Stormfront were powerful players in previous seasons, and Neuman has been allowed to develop beyond simply furthering Homelander's story with the help of The Boys' spinoff series, Gen V . However, the show has still run the risk of not allowing the gender-bent characters to develop their own stories.
You can stream all episodes of Gen V on Amazon Prime.
There is no denying that Homelander is the strongest supe in The Boys . It is even understandable that other characters would exist to facilitate and ensure his growth. Homelander's character is arguably the most important one in the series, so building other characters around him is a strategic move. Still, it would be an injustice to ignore the problematic nature of using women as props for male character development. The writers undoubtedly created a better character in Homelander by gender-swapping Stillwell, Neuman, and Stormfront, but there has arguably been a cost to the overall representation of women in the show.
The Boys is a superhero/dark comedy satire series created by Eric Kripke based on the comic series of the same name. Set in a "what-if" world that reveres superheroes as celebrities and gods who experience minimal repercussions for their actions. However, one group of vigilantes headed by a vengeance-obsessed man named Billy Butcher will fight back against these super-charged "heroes" to expose them for what they are.
