ദുരൂഹതകളുടെ കെട്ടഴിച്ച് കൂമന്‍; ത്രില്ലറുമായി വീണ്ടും ജീത്തു ജോസഫ്‌ | Kooman Movie Review

ചെറിയ കാര്യങ്ങളില്‍ പോലും കൊടിയ പക സൂക്ഷിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പോലീസുകാരന്‍. വൈരാഗ്യബുദ്ധിയോടെ, ശത്രുക്കളോടു പ്രതികാരം ചെയ്യാന്‍ അയാള്‍ വഴികള്‍ ചികയുകയാണ്. ഒരു പോലീസുകാരന് ഒരിക്കലും 'ചേരാത്ത' വേഷമെടുത്തണിയുമ്പോള്‍ അതിനു പിന്നിലുള്ള അപകടത്തെ അയാള്‍ ഗൗനിച്ചില്ല. ഒടുക്കം അയാള്‍ തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത മാര്‍ഗം അയാള്‍ക്കു തന്നെ തിരിച്ചടിയാകുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ സ്വയം രക്ഷിക്കാനുള്ള പരക്കംപാച്ചിലിനിടയില്‍ ചില അപ്രതീക്ഷിത സന്ദര്‍ഭങ്ങളിലേക്കാണ് അയാള്‍ എത്തിച്ചേരുന്നത്. തന്റെ നാടിനെ മുഴുവന്‍ മുള്‍മുനയില്‍ നിര്‍ത്തിയ ഒരു നിഗൂഢരഹസ്യം അയാള്‍ക്കു മുന്നില്‍ ചുരുളഴിയുന്നു. ആ രഹസ്യത്തിന്റെ ഉറവിടം തേടിയുള്ള ഉദ്വേഗജനകമായ യാത്രയിലേക്കാണ് ജീത്തു ജോസഫിന്റെ സംവിധാനത്തില്‍ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ 'കൂമന്‍' പ്രേക്ഷകരെ നയിക്കുന്നത്. ത്രില്ലടിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കഥാസന്ദര്‍ഭങ്ങളിലൂടെ മുന്നോട്ടുനീങ്ങുന്ന കൂമനില്‍ ഒരു മുന്‍കാഴ്ച പോലെ പ്രബുദ്ധ കേരളത്തെ ഞെട്ടിച്ച പല സമകാലീന സംഭവവികാസങ്ങളും കടന്നു വരുന്നുണ്ട്.

ഏറെ കാലത്തിനു ശേഷം ജീത്തു ജോസഫിന്റെ മറ്റൊരു ത്രില്ലര്‍ ബിഗ് സ്‌ക്രീനില്‍ തെളിയുമ്പോള്‍ പ്രതീക്ഷകളേറെയായിരുന്നു. ത്രസിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ത്രില്ലര്‍ അനുഭവം പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ച പ്രേക്ഷകരെ 'കൂമന്‍' തെല്ലും നിരാശപ്പെടുത്തിയില്ല. 'ട്വല്‍ത്ത് മാനി'നു ശേഷം ജീത്തു ജോസഫ്- കെ.ആര്‍. കൃഷ്ണകുമാര്‍ കൂട്ടുകെട്ടില്‍ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ ചിത്രത്തിന് തുടക്കം മുതല്‍ ഒടുക്കം വരെ പ്രേക്ഷകരെ പിടിച്ചിരുത്താനായി എന്ന് സംശയമേതുമില്ലാതെ പറയാം. കെട്ടുറപ്പുള്ള കഥയും തിരക്കഥയുമാണ് കൂമന്റെ ശക്തി. സ്ലോ പേസില്‍ തുടങ്ങുന്ന ചിത്രം പതിയെ പ്രേക്ഷകനെ ഉദ്വേഗത്തിന്റെ കൊടുമുടിയില്‍ എത്തിക്കുന്നു. ഗിരി എന്ന പോലീസുകാരനേയും അയാള്‍ അഭിമുഖികരിക്കേണ്ടി വരുന്ന വെല്ലുവിളികളേയും ചുറ്റിപറ്റി നീങ്ങുന്ന 'കൂമനി'ല്‍ 'ദൃശ്യ'ത്തെ ഓര്‍മിപ്പിക്കുംവിധം പോലീസ് സ്‌റ്റേഷനും ചായക്കടയുമൊക്കെ പ്രധാന കഥാപശ്ചാത്തലങ്ങളായി എത്തുന്നുണ്ട്.

ഗിരി എന്ന പോലീസുകാരന്റെ മാനസിക സംഘര്‍ഷങ്ങളെ കയ്യൊതുക്കത്തോടെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ ആസിഫ് അലിക്കു കഴിഞ്ഞു. ചിത്രത്തില്‍ ആസിഫിന്റെ പ്രകടനം പ്രശംസയര്‍ഹിക്കുന്നതാണ്. കള്ളന്‍ മണിയന്‍ എന്ന കഥാപാത്രമായി ജാഫര്‍ ഇടുക്കി നടത്തിയ പകര്‍ന്നാട്ടം പ്രത്യേക കയ്യടിയര്‍ഹിക്കുന്നു. പ്രധാന സ്ത്രീ കഥാപാത്രമായെത്തിയ ഹന്ന റെജി കോശിയും മികച്ചുനിന്നു. മറ്റു കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളെയവതരിപ്പിച്ച രഞ്ജി പണിക്കര്‍, ബാബുരാജ്, മേഘനാഥന്‍, പൗളി വില്‍സന്‍ എന്നിവരും മികച്ച പ്രകടനമാണ് കാഴ്ച വെച്ചത്.

ലളിതമായ കഥപറച്ചിലൂടെ തുടങ്ങി ആദ്യാവസാനം പ്രേക്ഷകരെ മുള്‍മുനയില്‍ നിര്‍ത്തുന്ന ജീത്തുവിലെ സംവിധായകനിലെ പതിവുരീതി 'കൂമനി'ലും കാണാം. ചിത്രം മുന്നോട്ടു വയ്ക്കുന്ന ഉദ്വേഗത്തിലേക്ക് പ്രേക്ഷകരെയെത്തിക്കുന്നതില്‍ വിഷ്ണു ശ്യാമിന്റെ പശ്ചാത്തല സംഗീതം വലിയ പങ്കു വഹിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. മാജിക് ഫ്രെയിംസിന്റെയും അനന്യ ഫിലിംസിന്റെയും ബാനറില്‍ ലിസ്റ്റിന്‍ സ്റ്റീഫനും ആല്‍വിന്‍ ആന്റണിയും ചേര്‍ന്ന് നിര്‍മ്മിച്ച ചിത്രത്തില്‍ സതീഷ് കുറുപ്പിന്റെ ഫ്രെയിമുകളും മികച്ചത്‌.

'മെമ്മറീസിന് ശേഷം ഞാൻ ചെയ്യുന്ന യഥാർഥ ത്രില്ലർ ചിത്രം ഇതായിരിക്കും' എന്ന്  ജീത്തു ജോസഫ് പറഞ്ഞത് വെറുതെയല്ല, ഒരുഘട്ടത്തിലും പിടിതരാതെ പ്രേക്ഷകനെ ആകാംക്ഷയുടെ മുൾമുനയിൽ നിർത്തുകയാണ് കൂമൻ എന്ന സിനിമ. ശരിക്കും ജീത്തുവും തിരക്കഥാകൃത്ത് കൃഷ്ണകുമാറും പുതിയ ത്രില്ലർ ചിത്രങ്ങൾക്കുള്ള കഥാബീജത്തിനായി നാട്ടിലൂടെ ഭൂതകാലത്തേക്കും ഭാവികാലത്തേക്കും ടൈം ട്രാവൽ ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ടോ എന്ന് ചിത്രം കണ്ടുകഴിയുമ്പോൾ പ്രേക്ഷകന് തോന്നിയാൽ തെറ്റുപറയാനില്ല.

കേരള- തമിഴ്നാട് അതിർത്തിയിലെ നെടുമ്പാറ എന്ന ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ സിപിഒ ആണ് നാട്ടുകാരൻ കൂടിയായ ഗിരി. ചില ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ട 'ആത്മഹത്യകൾ'  ഒഴിച്ചുനിർത്തിയാൽ ക്രമസമാധാന പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ ഒന്നുമില്ലാത്ത നാട്. പൊലീസുകാരും സ്വസ്ഥം. പക്ഷേ നിസ്സാരകാര്യങ്ങൾക്ക് നാട്ടുകാരോട്  വ്യക്തിവിരോധം മനസ്സിൽപെരുപ്പിച്ച് തരംകിട്ടുമ്പോൾ നൈസായിട്ട് 'പണി'കൊടുക്കുന്ന സ്വഭാവക്കാരനാണ് ഗിരി. അതിനയാൾ ഏതറ്റം വരേയുംപോകും. അങ്ങനെ 'ചൊരുക്ക് തീർക്കാൻ' അയാൾ രഹസ്യമായി ചെയ്യുന്ന ചില കൈവിട്ട കളികളാണ് ആദ്യപകുതി സജീവമാക്കുന്നത്. 'വേലി തന്നെ വിളവ് തിന്നുക' എന്ന് പറയുംപോലെയുള്ള അയാളുടെ ചെയ്തികൾ പ്രേക്ഷകരെ രസിപ്പിക്കുമെങ്കിലും അയാളുടെ സഹപ്രവർത്തകർക്കും മേലധികാരികൾക്കും തലവേദനയാകുന്നു. ഒരുഘട്ടത്തിൽ ഗിരിയുടെ ജീവിതം തവിടുപൊടിയാകുമെന്ന് കരുതുന്നിടത്ത് അടുത്ത 'ആത്മഹത്യ' നടക്കുന്നു. അവിടെയാണ് ഇന്റർവെൽ പഞ്ച്. 

ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ട സംഭവങ്ങൾ എന്ന് കരുതി പൊലീസും നാട്ടുകാരും തള്ളിക്കളഞ്ഞ ഈ 'ആത്മഹത്യകൾ'ക്ക് പിന്നിൽ മറ്റെന്തെങ്കിലും ദുരൂഹതകളുണ്ടോ?  പിന്നെ ആകാംക്ഷയുടെ കൊടുമുടിയിലേക്കുള്ള യാത്ര തുടങ്ങുകയാണ്. ഒരുഘട്ടത്തിൽ ഈ ദുരൂഹതയുടെ ചുരുളഴിക്കേണ്ടത് ഗിരിയുടെ വാശിയായി മാറുന്നു. അതിനുപിന്നാലെയുള്ള അയാളുടെ സഞ്ചാരവും ചില വഴിത്തിരിവുകളോടെ ചുരുളഴിയുന്ന ഞെട്ടിക്കുന്ന യാഥാർഥ്യങ്ങളിലുമാണ് ചിത്രം പര്യവസാനിക്കുന്നത്. സ്പോയിലർ ആകുമെന്നതിനാൽ ക്ളൈമാക്സ് പരിസരത്തേക്ക് പോകുന്നില്ല. എന്നിരുന്നാലും ആരായിരിക്കും വില്ലൻ എന്ന് കണ്ടുപിടിക്കാനുള്ള പ്രേക്ഷകന്റെ ത്വരയെ തകിടംമറിച്ചുകൊണ്ടാണ് കൂമൻ പറന്നിറങ്ങുന്നത്.

ഈ സിനിമയുടെ രചനയോ ചിത്രീകരണമോ നടക്കുന്ന സമയത്ത് മലയാളി സമൂഹത്തിന് ഏറെക്കുറെ അപരിചിതമായ ഒരു വിഷയം ചിത്രത്തിൽ പരാമർശിക്കുകയും മാസങ്ങൾക്കിപ്പുറം ചിത്രം റിലീസ് ചെയ്യുന്ന സമയത്ത് പൊതുസമൂഹത്തിൽ അത് ചർച്ചാവിഷയമായി കത്തിനിൽക്കുന്നു എന്നതും കൗതുകകരമാണ്. മലയാളി പ്രേക്ഷകർക്ക് റിലേറ്റ് ചെയ്യാവുന്ന തലത്തിലേക്ക് ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ കഥാഗതി വഴിമാറുമ്പോൾ തിയറ്ററിൽ കരഘോഷങ്ങൾ മുഴങ്ങുന്നു. ഇത്രയും ക്രിമിനൽ ബുദ്ധി സംവിധായകനും തിരക്കഥാകൃത്തിനും എവിടെനിന്ന് കിട്ടുന്നു എന്ന് അദ്ഭുതം തോന്നാം. ചിത്രത്തിലെ ഓരോ വഴിത്തിരിവുകൾക്ക് പിന്നിലുമുള്ള ഡീറ്റെയിലിങ് ആണ് ചിത്രത്തെ സജീവമാക്കുന്നത്. പൊലീസിലെ ക്രിമിനൽവൽക്കരണം വാർത്തകളിൽ നിറയുന്ന സമയത്തിറങ്ങുന്ന കൂമൻ പല അധികാരിവർഗങ്ങളെയും അസ്വസ്ഥമാക്കാനുമിടയുണ്ട്.

ഒരു നടൻ എന്ന നിലയിൽ ഏറെ മുൻപോട്ട് പോയിരിക്കുകയാണ് ആസിഫ് അലി. റോഷാക്കിലെ മുഖംമൂടി കഥാപാത്രത്തിന്റെ മറ്റൊരു ഷെയ്ഡ് കൂമനിലും കാണാം. ഫീൽഗുഡ് നായകപരിവേഷത്തിൽ നിന്നും നെഗറ്റീവ് ഷേഡുകളുള്ള മുഖ്യകഥാപാത്രമായുള്ള നവീകരണം ആസിഫിന് നന്നായി യോജിക്കുന്നുമുണ്ട്. വിശേഷ മാനസിക അവസ്ഥകൾ,സ്വഭാവങ്ങളുള്ള കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ ചെയ്യാനുള്ള ആസിഫിനുള്ള സവിശേഷ കഴിവുതന്നെയാണ് കൂമനിലേക്ക് താരത്തെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിക്കാൻ ജീത്തുവിന് ആത്മവിശ്വാസം നൽകിയതെന്ന് ഉറപ്പാണ്. ജാഫർ ഇടുക്കിയും മികച്ച പ്രകടനമാണ് കാഴ്ചവയ്ക്കുന്നത്. അടുത്തിറങ്ങിയ മിക്ക ചിത്രങ്ങളിലും ജാഫർ ഒരു നടനെന്ന നിലയിൽ ഗ്രാഫ് ഉയർത്തുന്നത് പ്രകടമാണ്. കൂടാതെ രൺജി പണിക്കർ, ബാബുരാജ്, മേഘനാഥൻ, ഹന്നാ റജി കോശി, ആദം അയൂബ്, ബൈജു, പൗളി വിൽ‌സൺ തുടങ്ങിയവരൊക്കെ മത്സരിച്ച് അഭിനയിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

മാജിക്ക് ഫ്രെയിംസിന്റെ ബാനറിൽ ലിസ്റ്റിൻ സ്റ്റീഫനും അനന്യ ഫിലിംസിന്റെ ബാനറിൽ ആൽവിൻ ആന്റണിയുമാണ് കൂമൻ  നിർമിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ചിത്രത്തെ എഡ്ജ് ഓഫ് ദ് സീറ്റ് അനുഭവമാക്കുന്നതിൽ സാങ്കേതികമേഖലകളും തുല്യപങ്ക് വഹിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. കെട്ടുറപ്പുള്ള തിരക്കഥയാണ് കൂമന്റെ നട്ടെല്ല്. ഇതിനുമുൻപ് ഒടിടി റിലീസായി ഇറങ്ങിയ ട്വൽത് മാൻ എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിന്റെയും തിരക്കഥാകൃത്ത് കൃഷ്ണകുമാറാണ്. കാഴ്ചക്കാരന് പിടിതരാതെ വട്ടംചുറ്റിക്കുകയും വേണ്ടിടത്ത് കൃത്യമായി ഡീറ്റെയിലിങ് ചെയ്യുകയും പല അടരുകളുള്ള കഥയെ കൂട്ടിയിണക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നതിലെ മികവ് അടിവരയിട്ടുപറയേണ്ടതാണ്. ഇനിയും ഈ കൂട്ടുകെട്ടിൽ മികച്ച ത്രില്ലറുകൾ നമുക്ക് പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കാം. 

കൂമൻ നിശാസഞ്ചാരിയാണ്. പേര് സൂചിപ്പിക്കും പോലെ ചിത്രത്തിലെ വഴിത്തിരിവുകൾ സംഭവിക്കുന്നതും രാത്രിയിലാണ്. രാത്രിയുടെ വന്യതയും ഭീതിയുമെല്ലാം സതീഷ് കുറുപ്പിന്റെ ഛായാഗ്രഹണത്തിലൂടെ  പ്രേക്ഷകനിലേക്ക് ആഴ്നിറങ്ങുന്നു. അതുപോലെ വിഷ്ണു ശ്യാമിന്റെ പശ്ചാത്തല സംഗീതവും ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ ത്രില്ലർ മൂഡ് നിലനിർത്തുന്നതിൽ പങ്കുവഹിക്കുന്നു.

ചുരുക്കത്തിൽ ജീത്തു ജോസഫ് അവകാശപ്പെട്ടതുപോലെ പ്രേക്ഷകന്റെ 'കിളിപറത്തുന്ന' കറകളഞ്ഞ ത്രില്ലർ അനുഭവം തന്നെയാണ് കൂമൻ. ഒടിടിക്കായി കാത്തിരുന്നാൽ നഷ്ടമാവുക മികച്ച ഒരു തിയറ്റർ ദൃശ്യാനുഭവമായിരിക്കും. അതിനാൽ തിയറ്റർ മസ്റ്റ് വാച്ച് തന്നെയാണ് കൂമൻ.

Kooman is another suspense thriller from the master of this genre, Jeethu Joseph. The movie talks about a police officer, Giri (Asif Ali). Despite being a police constable, he interferes in cases and situations that some of his superiors don’t encourage. In order to achieve fame and impress his superiors, Giri plans a series of events that propel the movie to a new level.  

There are a lot of layers and psychological elements in Kooman, which makes it different from your typical police investigation story. Asif Ali was stunning in this film. Giri is one of his best characters. Jaffar Idukki, Baburaj, and Renji Panicker well played their role in Kooman. Jaffar Idukki is turning into a valuable actor in Malayalam movies. What a performer he is. Hannah Reji Koshy as Lakshmi was good. K.R. Krishna Kumar’s writing was impressive. With some seat-edge scenes, the movie was totally engaging. The flow got some interruptions towards the end. As opposed to the previous thrillers of Jeethu Joseph, Kooman had predictable suspense, which made the ending lack excitement and punches. Some might still feel it is interesting. Jeethu Joseph continues his winning streak with another quality movie.

Technically, the movie came out well. Cinematography, editing, background scores, and all other departments gave their best work. Kooman also portrays a relevant topic in present Kerala. This movie is a winner and an intriguing investigation thriller from Jeethu Joseph and the team.

Kooman Malayalam Movie

For the non-Malayali audience, the word "kooman" does not refer to a superhero but rather is Malayalam for the owl, a bird known for being active mostly at night. Jeethu Joseph's new thriller, Kooman, is a film about the shady things that some people do at night. But it has the atmosphere of a film about things that go bump in the night.

There is a thief stealing money from one home to the next in a village to get back at someone. Jeethu Joseph spends a lot of time here, as he does in most of his thrillers, explaining the protagonist's mode of operation and showing a tea shop where villagers spread rumours and where rivalries emerge between people. This storytelling approach works more than it would at a plot level in that it builds the world of the night owls in Kooman. Much of the film is shot at night, giving a dark dimension to the goings-on in the screenplay.

K. R. Krishna Kumar's script has a wonderful character of a thief, played by Jaffar Idukki, who has a small yet important role. Whenever we see Jaffar's thief character appear, he makes a profound remark that serves as an insight into how a thief's mind works and that influences some of the other characters in the film. The scene where he explains to someone why a thief steals money is a splendid scene, because it also helps us understand the psyche of the other person.

Kooman also discusses things relevant to Kerala's modern society. I do not want to discuss what those things are to ensure that there are no spoilers here.

People usually criticize Jeethu Joseph's films for being plot-heavy and light in filmmaking quality. Kooman makes a strong case for his craft as a filmmaker. It helps that he works with quality professionals like cinematographer Satheesh Kurup and music composer Vishnu Shyam. The camera work and music help create an eerie world full of mysterious beings.

A long chase at night becomes a focal point in Kooman because it further establishes character motives and leads to certain revelations that add up to a satisfying climax. It is exciting to watch the chase sequence unravel visually and mindset-wise. The pacing dips a little at some point, and there is a deliberate attempt to bring elements that work as counterbalances to certain plot points. There is also a plot element that does not have a proper conclusion here. However, a trademark Jeethu Joseph twist perks things up as we fear a small amount of tedium is starting to set in.

As for acting, there is not one bad performance in the film. Jaffar Idukki is a wonderful actor. Even in a cameo role, not many get to shine as much as Jaffar does here or in any other film. He has a rough voice that works well in pieces of narration involving slightly corrupt characters. Asif Ali has a complex role that requires him to go a bit against conventions, and the actor delivers as he summons up the right emotions where necessary. Further, Kooman is one of the rare films where Pauly Valsan plays a mother without having many nasty things to say, even as it discusses nasty stuff.

Kooman Review: Jeethu Joseph’s flair for thrillers in play, Asif Ali emerges

Jeethu Joseph has reiterated his credentials as a master of the thriller genre. His latest outing, Asif Ali-starrer Kooman, grips the audience with several unpredictable twists and turns. Without any introductory scenic shots, Jeethu takes us to Nedumbara, a small village on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, to pan the backdrop of the plot.

Jeethu also offers a peek into the protagonist Giri Shankar's expertise in solving crimes.

Police constable Giri is not a popular figure among his colleagues and villagers, despite being a native of Nedumbara and having been in the same station for years. He is also being ridiculed for taking extra interest in solving disputes and cases in his station. It does not take the director much time to reveal Giri's vengeful personality, who waits for the opportune moment to pay back those who hurt his ego.

'Kothu' review: Sibi Malayil plays to his strength in this captivating political thriller

In spite of paying heed to his mentor CI Somasekharan Pillai's advice to control his temper, Giri finds an enigmatic pleasure in seeking revenge on people who teased him.

His life takes an unusual turn when CI Harilal, played by Baburaj, takes charge in his station, replacing Renji Panicker's character CI Somasekharan Pillai. A public confrontation with a foe makes Giri a laughing stock in the village. Subsequently, he seeks help from an unlikely ally to retaliate against CI Hari and others.

The first half of the film revolves around how Giri strives to seek revenge in a witty yet crooked manner and how a 'wrong decision' that was born out of vengeance changes the course of Giri’s life.

However after the interval, Jeethu takes the film to the next level by engaging Giri in an ‘unofficial’ investigation on a series of ‘suicide-like murders’ in his village in Nedumbara and neighbouring villages, distracting Giri from his guilt over something he did to seek revenge.

Jeethu Joseph, whose flair for investigative thrillers is acclaimed, does not fail to surprise his audience or give them a chance to predict the 'suspense' in between the film. His brilliance in including an in-depth reference to a recent sensational case in the storyline deserves an applause.

Asif Ali as Giri delivers a stellar performance, convincingly depicting the vulnerability of someone suffering from a personality disorder. He does well in enacting the struggle to overcome his flaws. The supporting characters played by Renji Panicker, Meghanathan and Baburaj add pace to the storyline.

Jaffer Idukki has come up with a notable performance, infusing a Ripper Ravi (played by Indrans in Anjaam Pathiraa) vibe among audience, while Jaffer's character explains about the wicked joy in burgling.

Darvinte Parinamam-fame Hannah Reji Koshy plays the female lead in the film. K R Krishna Kumar has written the screenplay for 'Kooman', produced by Listin Stephen and Allwin Antony.

Kooman movie review: Asif Ali's thriller is a fine addition to Jeethu Joseph's 'criminal trounces cop' universe

It takes a director of Jeethu Joseph's craftsmanship to keep the audience riveted to the screen with such effectiveness through a story that keeps us guessing and a character who is more grey than white

Story: Guru Shankar is probably the smartest cop in his police station, but his rank as a constable and his physical attributes are looked down with contempt by those in his village. This also fuels his ego, so much that he carries the grudge and often misused his power to get back. After the newly-joined circle inspector embarrasses him in front of the whole village, Giri decides to teach him a lesson. But this also leads him on a path that he cannot control. Giri's newfound thrill also uncovers a series of heinous crimes that were hitherto overlooked.

Review : A closer look at Jeethu Joseph's thrillers would easily reveal why they work so well. It's because of how fleshed out his protagonists are; be it Georgekutty in the Drishyam films or Sam Alex in Memories, their internal conflicts and personalities lend so much to the plot and how it evolves that the audience is hooked to the proceedings primarily because of the characters. With Kooman, he does exactly the same. In Asif Ali's Giri, a brilliant police constable who has serious ego issues because people don't give him the due respect he believes he commands, Jeethu and scriptwriter KR Krishnakumar creates a character that many can immediately connect with.

Giri isn't the usual morally upright cop, in fact he isn't afraid to bend the rules and teach the people who insult him a lesson - be it his schoolmate or even his superior. This also takes him on a path that has him towing the wrong side of law. The first half of the film is filled with intensely gripping moments that work because Jeethu has already got the audience connect with Giri, hook, line and sinker that more often than not, you would root for him, just like you did with Georgekutty in Drishyam. But then comes the surprise, or rather shock, when Giri gets a bit ahead of himself to stumble. It takes a director of Jeethu's craftsmanship to keep the audience riveted to the screen with such effectiveness through a story that keeps us guessing.

But right after the interval is when the movie focuses on another storyline, one that doesn't quite make use of Giri's build-up and uses it rather as a plot device to why he decides to investigate a case that he accidentally uncovers, alone. Kooman can be called a tale of two halves - one about a thief and another about a cop trying to prove himself. Amid this, whenever the second plotline seems to lose steam, Krishnakumar has cleverly weaved in elements from the thief's angle to keep this interesting. The second half's revelation is also chilling, considering its relevance and resemblance to the recent brutal murders in Kerala. 

Asif plays Giri to perfection, showing his internal conflicts, expressing his superior smirks and even pulling off a body language that transitions from insecure to confident to scared. The film is also a prime example of how he is a director's actor. The supporting cast of the film - Renji Panicker, Baburaj, Jaffer Idukki, Hannah Reji Koshy, Baiju Santosh and Deepak Parambol - also play their roles well to move the story along and keep the audience invested in what they are up to.

Kooman's music by Vishnu Syam is another highlight in keeping the film gripping. Satheesh Kurup's frames - especially during the night sequences of interactions between Jaffer and Asif's characters as well as the chase scene on a paddy field - stand out. The climax action sequence, though unfitting to the film's overall mood, has some great work from the art department and helps create a ritualistic atmosphere.

Verdict : The plot of Asif Ali and Jeethu Joseph's Kooman make it a gripping thriller, so much that at one point you wonder what if its protagonist Giri went up against Drishyam's Georgekutty.

Kooman review: An engaging puzzle from Jeethu Joseph

Jeethu Joseph’s much-anticipated movie, Kooman (Owl) , is out in the theatres on Friday, 4 November.

Starring Asif Ali in the lead, the film is a suspense thriller, like the director’s previous releases, including the Drishyam series and 12 th Man . Let’s check if he succeeded to deliver yet another hit.

The story is set in a hilly village straddling the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border. People from both states and different cultural backgrounds co-exist in the village.

The plot centres on Constable Giri, played by Asif Ali and certain events related to the police station he works. This upends the lives of many people, including Giri.

Movies belonging to the thriller genre were less when Jeethu’s Memories and Drishyam were released. Half a decade later, the situation is now different.

Jeethu Joseph pulls it out again

Mollywood is seeing over a dozen thrillers every month, but still, Jeethu strikes the right note again.

Being a great fan of the chase scene in Memories , I expected something in that league from him in Kooman .  And yes, Jeethu pulled out something similar, this time too.

Jeethu is perhaps the best in the industry for presenting such suspense dramas. His dramatic style of narration has helped in building up the suspense. The pace of narration is well-timed.

The movie has drama, tense moments and great action.

Another star of Kooman is the script by KR Krishna Kumar.

There are many reasons to appreciate the film, but the characters are the most important ones. It is not the twists that work here, but the dramatic tension and the characters.

As with any great movie, the screenplay is where it all begins. Here the protagonist is no hero but just another character, thanks to Jeethu.

Aesthetically, Kooman is beautiful. The photography is striking and natural, and it is ideally suited to the plot and genre. The editing is seamless, and the music is perfect.

The film is tightly packed with nail-biting tense moments, and a huge star cast. The performances are superb. Asif Ali in particular is brilliant. He is one of those actors who can portray emotions naturally. He is perfect as Giri.

His pivotal scenes at the midpoint of the film are unforgettable. The supporting cast, Jaffer Idukki, Baburaj, Renji Panicker, Hannah Reji Koshy and George Maryan, too, have added to the movie.

Not the best of Jeethu Joseph

It is, however, not the best of Jeethu. The movie’s central mystery occasionally lacks coherence. Kooman stumbles a bit here and there, but overall, it is impressive.

Asif Ali’s previous police movie Kuttavum Sikshayum was quite impressive but failed to tick the boxes with the audience, thanks to a poor marketing plan.

Kooman ticks all on the checklist and has all the ingredients to strike the right notes with the audience. Jeethu and Asif Ali deserve appreciation for their work.

Jeethu has created a movie that is tense, cautious, and deftly put together, relishing in the remarkable development of atmosphere and setting. Up to the closing credits, this movie never stops catching your attention.

Kooman is an engaging puzzle, a must-watch movie!
