Students interested in graduate research in various fields, from public health and English to computer science and engineering, have numerous options for Ph.D. programs that offer full funding. These programs typically provide waived tuition and fees and an annual stipend. Some also offer health insurance and other benefits. Gaining admittance into these small cohorts can be highly competitive, and the programs can be time-consuming . Here are 30 fully funded Ph.D. programs at U.S. colleges and universities. Keep in mind this is not a comprehensive list – there are others out there.

• Ph.D. in anthropology at the University of Chicago

Anthropology Ph.D. students at the University of Chicago can receive funding for up to eight years of study, assuming they are in good standing at the university. During that time, they will receive a full-tuition scholarship plus health insurance and a living stipend – which equated to $33,000 for the 2022-2023 school year – and can apply for external fellowships.

Ph.D. in biological sciences in public health at Harvard University (MA)

Harvard University's T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston offers a Ph.D. in biological sciences in public health that aims to provide students with expertise in disease prevention and treatment. This program includes tuition, a stipend and health insurance for five years as long as the student maintains satisfactory academic progress. International students receive the same benefits. Current research in the school's laboratories involves diseases like AIDS, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, malaria and tuberculosis.

• Ph.D. in business at Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Students enrolled in the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology can study a range of fields like organization studies, accounting and information technology. Those pursuing a Ph.D. will receive a full-tuition scholarship plus a monthly stipend of $4,267, capped at $51,204. They will also receive medical insurance, new laptops at the beginning of their first and fourth years of study and $4,500 over five years for conference travel expenses.

Ph.D. in business at Rice University (TX)

At the Rice University Jones Graduate School of Business in Texas, students enjoy full financial assistance upon admission to the Ph.D. program. Aiming to prepare students to teach in fields like accounting, finance, organizational behavior and strategic management, the program provides students with a research or teaching assistantship. Students receive a tuition waiver and a $40,000 annual stipend contingent on making satisfactory academic progress and maintaining full-time student status.

• Ph.D. in business at the University of Iowa

The University of Iowa's Tippie College of Business offers Ph.D. degrees in fields such as accounting, economics, business analytics and marketing. The college says it provides full funding to "virtually all admitted students." This includes tuition and fees, a minimum nine-month stipend of about $20,000 with annual adjustments and comprehensive health insurance covered at 90%. Some departments offer funding for research presentations at major conferences, summer fellowships and paid time off for independent research.

Ph.D. in chemical engineering at Cornell University (NY)

According to Cornell University 's website, all students admitted to the chemical engineering Ph.D. program at the New York school receive a full tuition waiver, health insurance and a stipend. This funding can come from a teaching assistantship, research assistantship or fellowship, and full stipends are granted for nine months with the likelihood of additional aid in the summer.

Chris Taggart | Columbia University

Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Columbia University (NY)

Students enrolled in Columbia University 's Ph.D. program in clinical psychology at the Teachers College in New York receive fully funded tuition and a $25,000 stipend annually for three years. The stipend also carries into a student's fourth year. These doctoral fellows "may be expected to serve" as graduate teaching or research assistants. Students typically complete the mentor-matched program, which includes a full-year internship, in five to seven years.

Ph.D. in computer science at Brown University (RI)

Brown University 's Ph.D. students in computer science have access to "full financial support while completing the degree," plus the option to take classes at nearby schools without incurring additional costs, according to the school's website. In fact, doctoral students in any program at the Rhode Island university are guaranteed five years of financial support, which includes tuition remission, a stipend, health services fees and a subsidy for health insurance.

Georgetown University |

Ph.D. in computer science at Georgetown University (DC)

Georgetown University 's Ph.D. program in computer science provides scholarships and assistantships that cover full tuition at the Washington, D.C., school and include a stipend and health insurance for the first five years. Once enrolled in the program, students must complete the Apprenticeship in Teaching Program and ultimately write and defend a full research dissertation in a seminar open to the public.

Ph.D. in computer science at Washington University in St. Louis

Ph.D. students in the computer science or computer engineering program at Washington University in St. Louis receive full tuition support and health insurance. According to the university's website: "As a doctoral candidate, you will also receive a generous stipend to cover living expenses and a new, high-end Apple laptop computer. This support is guaranteed as you continue to make satisfactory progress towards your degree." Doctoral students may also qualify for one of three fellowships.

Jeff Miller | UW-Madison

• Ph.D. in counseling psychology at the University of Wisconsin—Madison

Incoming Ph.D. students at the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin—Madison are guaranteed full funding for the duration of the time that they are expected on campus, according to the university's department of counseling psychology website. Doctoral students also receive a benefits package that includes health insurance. Funding may come from financial aid, fellowships, assistantships and/or traineeships.

Emory University |

Ph.D. in economics at Emory University (GA)

Students enrolled in the economics Ph.D. program at Emory University typically receive full funding, according to the Georgia university's website. The stipend provided to students is $36,376 per year for five years, starting in fall 2023, and the full tuition scholarship is worth $70,200 per year. Funding for admitted students also includes a $4,370 annual subsidy that covers 100% of a student's cost of health insurance. First-year students have no stipend-related work requirements.

• Ph.D. in education at New York University

New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development offers more than 30 degree programs. Many can be pursued on campus or online. Ph.D. degrees are offered in areas like developmental psychology, educational leadership and childhood education. Full-time NYU Steinhardt Ph.D. students are eligible for a funding package that includes an annual stipend – $32,000 for the 2022-2023 academic year – tuition coverage for required coursework and student health insurance for five years.

Ph.D. in education at Stanford University (CA)

Stanford University's Graduate School of Education allows students numerous fellowship and assistantship opportunities at the California school, along with a "five-year funding guarantee that provides tuition aid, fellowship stipend, and assistantship salary, and covers the standard cost of attendance," the program website reads. At the Graduate School of Education, doctoral students can choose from a range of academic areas like curriculum studies and teacher education, and developmental and psychological sciences.

• Ph.D. in education at the University of Pennsylvania

The University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education provides full funding to Ph.D. students as part of a fellowship and research apprenticeship package. This funding includes a living stipend, health insurance and coverage of tuition and fees for up to four years if the student maintains full-time enrollment. Some students may also qualify for additional summer funding.

• Ph.D. in engineering at the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor

Doctoral students in engineering at the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor can choose from numerous areas of specialization under umbrella categories like aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering, macromolecular science and engineering, and robotics. All engineering doctoral students are guaranteed full funding, a monthly living stipend and health insurance. The exact amount can vary, according to the program's website, and funding comes from a range of sources, including graduate student instructor positions and fellowships.

Annually, doctoral students studying English at Boston University receive a stipend plus full tuition, fees and basic health insurance. This funding is guaranteed for at least five years, with two of those years typically free from teaching requirements. Funding can sometimes be extended up to seven years, according to the university's website, but it's not guaranteed. Students may also apply for various prizes, fellowships and short-term research and travel grants.

• Ph.D. in English at the University of California—Los Angeles

Applicants to the Ph.D. in English program at the University of California—Los Angeles are automatically considered for various funding options. A six-year funding package includes "a minimum of two years of full fellowship, four years of summer stipend support and up to four years of teaching assistantships," according to the school website. Beyond tuition, fees and health insurance are also covered.

Ph.D. in international relations at American University (DC)

American University offers doctoral students in its international relations program who do not have external funding a renewable four-year Dean's Fellowship that is contingent on making satisfactory academic progress. The fellowship includes the cost of tuition, fees and a stipend that must be earned via a part-time role as a teaching or research assistant. Students also must "demonstrate competency in a modern foreign language" before graduating.

• Ph.D. in management at Binghamton University—SUNY

All students admitted to the interdisciplinary management Ph.D. program at the Binghamton University—SUNY School of Management in New York receive a combination of a full-tuition scholarship and a teaching or research assistantship for each academic year, up to four years. This STEM-designated business doctoral degree prepares students for careers in academia and work in the public and private sectors, and has a student-faculty ratio of 1-to-1, according to the university's website.

Ph.D. in materials science and engineering at Duke University (NC)

Doctoral students at Duke University in North Carolina studying materials science and engineering generally receive full tuition, a stipend and fee support for the first five years. Students also receive up to six years of health insurance if they are on the university's student medical insurance plan. The doctoral program aims to help students publish with a faculty adviser and develop research skills, with the opportunity to present research at professional conferences.

Ph.D. in nursing at Johns Hopkins University (MD)

The School of Nursing at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland provides most doctoral students with three fully funded years of study. Available financial aid includes graduate assistantships, targeted fellowships and nursing-specific funding. The university aims to "advance the theoretical foundation of nursing practice and healthcare delivery" with the degree, its website reads. "By graduation, most Hopkins nurse scholars have been awarded grants that continue their research and set them well on their way to a successful career."

• Ph.D. in nursing at the University of Virginia

All students admitted to the University of Virginia 's Ph.D. in Nursing program are eligible for four years of scholarship funding to cover tuition, insurance and fees, as well as annual stipends. To receive certain aid, students must work 10 hours per week as a graduate teaching assistant. With a heavy research focus, students can expect courses in qualitative, quantitative and historical research, and will have to submit a research proposal for peer review.

Ph.D. in nursing at Yale University (CT)

At Yale University in Connecticut, the School of Nursing offers full funding to its Ph.D. students. They receive a monthly stipend for four years in addition to paid tuition and health care. The program allows students to gain in-depth knowledge in a particular area of study. Every incoming Ph.D. student gets paired with a faculty adviser "whose area of expertise and active research most closely matches with the student’s scholarly interest," according to the school's website.

University of Minnesota |

• Ph.D. in psychology at the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities

Students admitted to the Ph.D. program to study psychology at the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities are guaranteed full funding for five years as long as they maintain satisfactory performance and degree progress. This funding includes full-time tuition, a nine-month stipend and subsidized health insurance. Funding comes from some combination of teaching assistantships, traineeships, research assistantships and fellowships. Students in the program can specialize in areas like cognitive and brain sciences, industrial-organizational psychology and social psychology.

Matt Cashore | University of Notre Dame

Ph.D. within the Romance languages and literatures department at the University of Notre Dame (IN)

University of Notre Dame doctoral students who focus on French and Francophone studies, Iberian and Latin American studies or Italian studies are guaranteed five years of funding. Funding includes a full scholarship, including tuition and fees, plus a stipend and health insurance. Anyone who completes the Ph.D. degree requirements at the Indiana university within five years will automatically receive a one-year postdoctoral fellowship via the university's 5+1 Program. Fellows will have a teaching load limited to one course per semester.

Ph.D. in social work at Bryn Mawr College (PA)

Students admitted to Bryn Mawr College 's Ph.D. program in social work receive full tuition waivers and "substantial stipends" toward living expenses. The Pennsylvania college's website says: "Consistent with our model, all Ph.D. students are funded equally, and do not compete for basic financial support during coursework." The program's cohorts typically include only three or four students each year. According to the college, it awarded the first Ph.D. degree in social work in the U.S. in 1920.

Vanderbilt University |

Ph.D. in special education at Vanderbilt University (TN)

Funding is guaranteed for all admitted doctoral students enrolled in the special education Ph.D. program at the Peabody College of Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. This includes full tuition, a "competitive" monthly stipend and health insurance for up to four years. Students may also be nominated for additional honor scholarships and fellowships. Areas of focus within the Ph.D. program include high-incidence disabilities and early childhood education.

Ph.D. in theatre and drama at Northwestern University (IL)

This interdisciplinary Ph.D. program at Northwestern University in Illinois combines coursework in humanities, social science and the visual arts. The program's students receive a five-year full-tuition scholarship plus an annual living stipend. Ph.D students enrolling at this program in fall 2022 will receive a living stipend of at least $36,960 during the 2023-2024 school year. Stipend amounts may change from year to year. Students can apply for subsidies to facilitate conference travel and summer language study.

• Ph.D. in women, gender and sexuality studies at University of Maryland

At the University of Maryland 's Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Ph.D. students without a master's degree usually have five years of guaranteed funding. Those with a master's degree usually are funded four years, with awards stemming from a mix of departmental fellowships and graduate teaching assistantships. Since the program's establishment in 1999, the department has granted 36 Ph.Ds, according to UMD's website.

Kidney Research UK PhD studentship: Enzymatic conversion of blood group antigens in human kidneys

Characterising Interfaces to Drive Next-Generation Halide Perovskite Development (Fixed Term)

Applications are invited for 3.5-year fully funded PhD studentship based in the Department of Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology, University of Cambridge and industry partner Swift Solar. This proposed project will comprise the development and utilisation of advanced characterisation tools based on electron, X-ray and/or photon modalities to understand power losses and instabilities in next-generation halide perovskite photovoltaic technologies. This information will drive further device development and facilitate commercialisation of this exciting technology.

PhD Studentship: Computational Modelling of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantations

A fully funded PhD studentship is available under the supervision of Dr Shelly Singh-Gryzbon, with a start date of 1 October 2024. Funding will cover the student's stipend and tuition fees at the UK rate. Non-UK applicants will be considered only if they can fund the overseas fees differential or if they are awarded a suitable scholarship. (Please note that there are no additional funds available via the University for which applicants can apply.)

PhD Studentship in Medical Science (Fixed Term)

We are currently advertising one UKRI/MRC PhD studentship for entry in October 2024, which will be awarded on a competitive basis. The studentship pays for Cambridge University and College fees, and the student receives a generous full stipend of £21,122 per year (as at 2023), payable for up to four years. No need to fork out US$40,000 for a PhD – here are 10 fully-funded PhD programmes

The journey to obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a long and expensive one.

From completing a diploma or A-level programme to getting a bachelor’s degree, the journey only gets more expensive as you embark on a three to seven-year journey of obtaining your PhD. 

It’s why competition for a fully-funded PhD can be fierce.

On average, the total cost of a PhD programme is somewhere between US$30,000 to US$40,000 per year, depending on where you enrol. This expense does not include the cost of living if you are moving to a different city or country to study.

Multiply that with the number of years it’ll take for you to complete your studies, and you’ll see why it’s not an easy decision to make. 

Still, there are always ways to pursue higher education at a more affordable cost. While student loans are an option, you might want to aim for a fully-funded PhD instead.

What is a fully-funded PhD programme?

A fully-funded programme usually means full tuition reimbursement and a stipend to help cover the cost of living while pursuing the degree.

However, requirements differ according to the university.

Some universities offer a “no-strings-attached” fellowship where they receive funding but do not owe the university anything aside from their research. In many cases, a student will need to work part-time for the university by providing teaching or administrative assistance which might be useful in their professional career.

It’s also important to take note that universities are not the only ones funding your PhD.

Some grants might come from government bodies to support national research objectives and train future professionals to carry them out. Others could come from independent charities that have similar goals or businesses that see potential benefits to achieve their targets.

Things to know before you attempt to secure a fully-funded PhD programme

Before we jump into introducing some fully-funded PhD programmes, let’s take a closer look at how PhD funding starts out. 

Seek advice 

Reach out to an academic advisor or supervisor for advice on the next steps to take. Chances are that they can provide suggestions or even recommendation letters. Otherwise, they can leverage on their own knowledge and networks to redirect you to a better source of information. 

If an advisor isn’t available, try reaching out to the university’s graduates to get a clearer viewpoint from someone with first-hand experience.

Many PhD projects are actually advertised with generous funding, and this is particularly so for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) projects. 

However, it doesn’t mean you won’t find funding in other subjects like education, sociology or even English. 

Be sure you don’t single out universities in your search. Explore opportunities with external parties, such as business or industry partners too. 

Build a funding portfolio

Getting into the PhD scene is competitive, more so when you’re looking to score a fully-funded PhD. To help secure funding, put together a portfolio to make your case as strong as possible. 

Similar to a resume, your portfolio should outline what you plan to study, how long for, and above all else, why you wish to take the PhD. 

This demonstrates your commitment and understanding to the subject and its industry field.

Living costs and expenses

Not all funded PhDs offer to cover your living expenses, especially if you’re an international student. But even if they do, it’s a good idea to set aside some funds for your day-to-day life.

Some fully-funded PhDs offer accommodation for up to a certain amount of years, so if you intend on staying on for a longer period of time, it may be wise to have some finances ready for living on your own.

Determine your timeframe

It’s common for PhD students to work while studying. Part-time study offers that flexibility, but it also stretches out the length of your PhD and increases your maintenance expenses.

There are two ways for Penn Graduate School of Education students to get full funding at the University of Pennsylvania .

The first is through the Dean’s Fellowship and Research Apprenticeship which includes tuition and fees, health insurance, and a living stipend. Students would also receive a fellowship and research apprenticeship package which covers four years of study.

The other is the IES Predoctoral Training Programme which offers financial and skill-building support to selected applicants. This multi-year training programme is designed to prepare PhD students committed to learning rigorous methods for conducting research.

10. Yale University

At Yale University , the School of Nursing offers fully-funded PhD degrees to its students. There are three types of scholarships available through programmes namely the Merit-Based Programme, Need-Based Programme, and Community Scholars Programme.

The Merit-Based Programme is awarded through admissions. All incoming students, both domestic and international, can sign up where they will go through a holistic review process. The Need-Based Programme is for US citizens and permanent residents.

How do I apply for a PhD studentship?

The application for our schemes will usually involve:  

• submitting a full application through the university's PhD application portal, accessible from the  PhD funded projects webpages . You will upload your research proposal as part of this process.
• The submission must include two letters of reference, academic qualifications, a proposed project approach, a personal statement and your CV (resumé).
• Please note, deadline for 2024 start on the most recent funding scheme was 29 February 2024 16:00 (UCT/GMT).
• Shortlisted applicants are likely to be invited for interview.

Details of application for fully funded PhD studentships

To apply for your studentship at the University of Brighton, you should first review the specific projects or project areas that our academics are offering to support. 

All eligible applications for the funded PhD will be reviewed, with shortlisted candidates entered for final decisions on the allocations of funding, which will rest with the university's central Doctoral College. 

What does PhD funding include?

The funding for the PhD usually cover the full fee and a stipend at the UKRI rate plus an allowance of £1,500 per year for researcher training for three years (or part-time equivalent). 

Successful candidates benefit from expert supervisory teams, a programme of postgraduate researcher development workshops and membership of specialist, interdisciplinary research centres and groups. There will be introductions to a network of relevant researchers, careers advice and opportunities for interaction within and beyond the university. Through this, our PhD students have the best start possible towards ambitious careers that make use of their research degrees.

How do I increase my chances of getting a PhD studentship?

You must be able to show your suitability for a UK research degree if you wish to apply for fully-funded studentships.

This includes evidence either of a relevant and successful academic background or equivalent relevant professional/expert background in the applied subject area. Applicants from overseas will also have to fulfil any English language and visa requirements.

This will be true for studentships in the UK across most of the UK universities. It is usual for applicants either to have completed (or be about to complete) a masters degree, have an exceptional undergraduate record and references, or demonstrate the equivalent scholarly potential.

PhD research projects

PhD projects and studentships are defined pieces of research that an organisation wishes to explore. A research council may have provided funding for the project to ensure its successful outcome, although not all defined PhD projects have funding associated with them.

The availability of funded research projects varies significantly by subject area. They are usually offered in medical, scientific and technical disciplines, where the cost of research is high and where defined projects may be used to contribute to a wider area of research.

However, it is still worth checking to see if any funded research projects are available in the arts, humanities and social sciences.

The selection process for a funded project often works in the same way as applying for a job: there is usually only one place available, so it can be competitive. You also need to demonstrate your suitability to work alongside others in a research team.

Here are some things to remember:

• Funded projects tend to have early academic year deadlines, so be prepared to apply before January in the year before you plan to start your studies .
• Projects and studentships can be advertised in different places. The majority will be listed on FindaPhd.com and displayed below, but you should also check school and research centre/institute websites.
• Check the funding status and eligibility criteria of the project you are interested in. If there is no funding attached to it, then you will need to research other funding opportunities in order to finance your research.
• Some projects may require you to submit a research proposal as part of your application, or to contact a supervisor before you apply, but others won’t, so make sure you check the application requirements for what you need to submit.
• Application for PhD projects are usually made through the University of Edinburgh’s degree finder; however, there may be some exceptions. If you are in doubt, ask the project’s lead contact.

PhD Industrial Studentship  in “ In situ Evaluation and Nanoscale Design of Battery Electrodes for Optimized Performance and Lifetime ”

Project summary: Applications are invited for a Ph.D. studentship focused on nanoscale battery anode design within the Chemistry and Materials Departments at Imperial College London. Whilst the project will have a fundamental focus, it will contribute to the wider development of energy storage systems. As part of a collaboration with a major international industrial partner, the research will target the development of sodium ion battery systems for grid storage to support the implementation of renewable energies.

The project will focus on fabrication and detailed assessment of optimized architectures for electrodes in sodium ion batteries, based on numerical simulations carried out as part of the wider project. In particular, the PhD program will develop and implement advanced operando characterization tools, based on X-ray, Raman and electron microscopy. It will exploit state-of-the-art equipment available at Imperial, including a brand new suite of atomic resolution instruments specified for electrochemical device studies, and in situ cells available as part of a collaboration with the Diamond Light Source national Facility.

Development of high performance low operating temperature protonic conducting ceramic electrolysers

iCase Studentship in “Development of high performance low operating temperature protonic conducting ceramic electrolysers”

Solid oxide proton conducting ceramics, discovered by Iwahara 1 over 30 years ago have been extensively investigated for their application in proton conducting fuel cells. The recent and growing interest in the production of green hydrogen, underpinned by international governmental strategies, including the US hydrogen hubs, 2 has renewed interest in proton conducting oxides for application in high temperature electrolysers. Proton conducting ceramic electrolysers (PCEC) offer several advantages over the comparable solid oxide electrolyser (SOE), Figure 1, with temperatures compatible with waste heat from industrial processes, thus offering a route to decarbonisation of industrial processes. Whilst the PCEC has been identified as a route to green hydrogen production there are numerous areas for materials and systems optimisation, with mechanistic understanding of the electrode processes at both anode and cathode being of key concern.

In this PhD project we will focus on developing detailed mechanistic understanding of the operation of composite electrodes consisting of a novel hexagonal perovskite proton conductor with an electronic conducting phase (e.g. Ni) incorporated. These transport processes include ion transport through the oxide, charge transfer across interfaces and both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. Recent developments of the Ba 7 Nb 4 MoO 20 3,4 and Ba 3 NbMoO 8.5 5 compositions have suggested attractive levels of both protonic and oxide ionic transport, but as yet there have been no studies of the electrochemical performance of these materials in devices, nor any understanding of the durability and cyclability of the cells, including materials thermal expansion behaviour.  To further develop knowledge of this technology there will be two key aspects to this research project: 1) manufacture and testing of single cells based on the identified hexagonal perovskite compositions, including detailed characterisation of the mechanism of ion transport and subsequent degradation of electrochemical performance, including selection of compatible electrodes and 2) development of new compositions based on the prototypical materials, and engaging with materials discovery approaches such as molecular dynamics and density functional theory calculations to provide predictors for performance.  From these studies we will identify the rate limiting electrochemical processes in next generation materials in a planar electrolysis cell.

Engineering catalytic interfaces for direct alkaline seawater electrolysis

Project summary:  Low temperature water electrolysis is key to enabling green hydrogen production at the terawatt scale. Current water electrolyser technologies require extremely pure water, which limits their design flexibility and imposes resource intensive steps of water purification. Direct seawater electrolysis circumvents these obstacles but is currently limited by the poor activity and stability of catalysts in the presence of ions present in seawater. The slow kinetics of the water oxidation at the anode, the major bottleneck for water electrolysers, is exacerbated in in seawater. Chloride ions, abundantly present in seawater, get preferentially oxidized at the anode and their interaction with the catalyst surface triggers oxy-chloride corrosion mechanisms.  This project will aim to design catalysts with an anion-rich surface that can repel chloride ions and thus ensure sustained catalytic performance in the presence of seawater. The student will develop expertise in a combination of electrochemical chacterisation methods, time-of-flight mass spectrometry and operando techniques including optical and surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy to track the evolution of the solid-liquid interface as a function of potential.

Microwave Amplification at the Quantum Limit with Room-Temperature Maser Amplifiers

Project summary: 

Masers – the microwave version of lasers - have long been used to detect signals for deep-space communications and radio astronomy due to their exceptional sensitivity and low noise, but traditional maser devices require vacuum and cryogenic cooling which has limited their use to date to these niche applications. The Maser Research Group at Imperial has pioneered the use of quantum materials such as diamond enriched with nitrogen vacancies to create a new generation of masers capable of operating in ambient conditions [ Arroo et al., APL ], culminating in the development of portable prototype devices which can be tested in realistic environments [ Ng et al., APL ].

Applications are sought for an ICASE Award studentship to explore how these devices can be optimised through a combination of device and materials engineering. This will include optical and microwave characterisation of functional quantum materials, the design and fabrication of maser devices and testing these devices to achieve quantum-limited measurements.

The project will ideally suit an applicant with an interest in quantum technology and device engineering.

The PhD will be carried out with support from the Henry Royce Institute and will contribute to the work carried out on the NAME Programme grant.

Shielding Materials for Fusion Energy

iCASE studentship in “Development of fusion-grade cemented WC for shielding applications in compact spherical tokamaks”

Duration: 4 years

Entry requirements: A first-class or upper-class second honours degree (or equivalent) in Materials Science and Engineering or a related discipline. A strong background in materials processing and/or characterisation is desired. A demonstrated interest in ceramics and/or materials for fusion will be an advantage.

Funding: 4 years of funding are available for UK Residents (timely applications from exceptional international students will be considered, subject to institutional funding limitations). The funding will cover standard tuition fees, the iCASE UKRI stipend (£21,662 for 2023/24) and project-related costs.

Project summary: The development of advanced radiation shielding materials is critical to enabling safe operation of compact fusion reactors on a commercial basis. Cemented-WC ceramics, which consist of WC particles bonded together with an iron-based binder, are front-running candidate materials due to their excellent thermal, mechanical, and shielding properties. However, the binder may undergo embrittlement, and the WC particles may swell, due to irradiation-induced defect formation. The PhD project will fabricate a new class “fusion grade” cemented-WC composites, which will alleviate these two concerns. This will be achieved by optimising both the composition of the iron-based binder for improved neutron resilience, and the microstructure of the WC grains to accommodate their swelling. Such an approach will yield a material better equipped to withstand the high neutron doses and transmutation effects expected during service. The project will receive support from the UK Atomic Energy Authority in designing, planning, and conducting irradiation damage studies to better understand the irradiation damage response of the fabricated materials.

The UKAEA’s mission is to lead the delivery of sustainable fusion energy and maximise the scientific and economic benefit. This is a response to the national and global need for sustainable and secure low carbon energy supply. The UKAEA will be supporting this project in several ways including:

• Hosting the student for a 3-month secondment on the UKAEA site or at a National Ion-Beam Facility relevant to the project.

Understanding interfacial failure in polymer nanocomposites from first-principles

A fully-funded PhD studentship at Imperial College London, in the Department of Materials, is available from 1 st October (a later start date may also be considered). The position (and full funding of tuition fees and stipend) is available to both UK and international students.

Elastomers (e.g., natural rubber) are a very versatile class of polymeric material. Their diversity of technological application is made possible by the ability to tune their constituent building blocks at multiple length-scales, from the chemical groups within individual monomers, to the molecular architecture of each polymer chain, to their overall morphology on the mesoscale and by additions such as inorganic nanoparticles to make elastomer nanocomposites.

In this project you will use theory and computer simulations to understand and predict the mechanical failure of silica-polymer nanocomposites and the mechanisms by which the chemistry of the interface influences mechanical properties. The problem is inherently multi-scale: the bond-breaking processes at the nanoparticle-polymer interface that initiate failure are quantum-mechanical in nature, yet the mechanisms by which stresses are transferred through the disordered polymer occur on length-scales far in excess of anything that can be simulated quantum-mechanically.

Building on earlier work at Imperial [1, 2], we will develop and use a hybrid, multi-scale approach in which the majority of the system is described with a computationally efficient interatomic force-field, and regions in which bond-breaking is about to occur are identified on the fly and are treated quantum mechanically. We will focus first on silica (SiO 2 ) nanoparticles and polymers such as polyisoprene, which are commonly used in industry and atomic models for which have already been developed by researchers at Continental [3-5]. As the project proceeds we will consider a variety of different polymers and chemistries of attachment to the nanoparticles.

This project is a collaboration between Imperial College London and Continental , and there will be opportunities to spend some time during the course of the project working at Continental in Hannover, Germany.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in the physical sciences at the equivalent of a UK First or Upper Second Class. We strongly encourage applications from under-represented groups.

The funding (subject to successful completion of final stages of contractual arrangements), will cover tuition fees at the UK or international student rate plus a stipend of £21,237 per year.

Understanding the type, distribution and mechanical properties of interfaces in geological systems.

Funding is through the project InFUSE (Interface with the future: underpinning science to support the energy transition), funded by the EPSRC and Shell. 

Project summary:  Carbon capture and storage (CCS) provides a very promising solution to sequester current CO2 production and allow critical process that are difficult to decarbonise to continue running into the future. Understanding the suitability of different rock types for CCS requires a detailed knowledge of among other things their mechanical properties both before and after CO2 injection. The mechanical properties of brittle materials are governed by their ability to dissipate energy which is often controlled by the properties of their interfaces. For example, weak interfaces can promote crack deflection and crack bridging mechanisms giving increased performance. These mechanisms have been studied and optimised in many structural ceramic systems however, in geological materials less work has been carried out. 

In this project we propose to both measure the distribution of interfaces and interface categories within different rock types and measure the mechanical the properties of individual key interfaces. In this project you will develop skills in micromechanics, high resolution electron microscopy included EBSD and synchrotron techniques at the Diamond Light Source, the UKs national synchrotron facility. This is a key partner in the project and will support the design of novel environments to study samples under operando conditions. This would give unique insight into the microstructure of candidate rock types. This could then potentially be extended to include samples that have been exposed to supercritical CO2. This could be particularly important in basalt rocks with their ability to mineralize CO2. This allows to cracks to fill with newly formed carbonates and silicates on relatively short timescales (~1-2 years). Yet the whole process of reaction driven cracking is not well understood. This is either regarded as beneficial for safety, by preventing leakage, or as detrimental as mineralization may seal fluid paths and thus reduce permeability. It should also be noted that these research techniques are quite general and a secondary program could be applied to completely different brittle material systems, such as the build-up of damage in battery materials leading to performance degradation.

Validating Negative and Low Carbon Advanced Materials Innovation for Sustainable Automotive Applications

Project description : To achieve the sponsor’s Net Zero targets, identify and evaluate novel sustainable low-carbon materials for automotive applications, this project will explore and evaluate the properties of new advanced materials, considering, for example, biomass-derived and bio-inspired materials, high-performance polymers, and composites, as well as glass technologies in view of a more sustainable, low carbon automotive manufacturing and recycling process. The key questions addressed in this research project are:

What are the possible environmentally friendly processes to derive and recycle polymers rapidly from biomass and bio-inspired materials? What are the relevant mechanical properties, costs, and stability under different UV and temperature changes of the relevant processes and extracts?

The selected candidate will help us develop advanced low-carbon materials, recycling processes, and carbon capture and removal technologies of the future to support ongoing electrification and decarbonization in the automotive industry. 

Please note this project is a cross-departmental initiative on sustainability at Imperial College London, Faculty of Engineering. Applicants for study/research awards design their own projects and will typically work with advisers at foreign universities or other institutes of higher education. The study/research awards are available in approximately 140 countries. Program requirements vary by country, so the applicants' first step is to familiarize themselves with the program summary for the host country.

Fulbright arts grants.

Australia : Western Sydney University Award enables American students to undertake research in the following fields of study: Creative and Performing Arts (all fields), Environmental Studies, Social Justice and Public Health.

France : Fulbright-Harriet Hale Woolley Awards in the Arts are offered to students in the visual fine arts (painting, print-making, sculpture, photography) or music (composition, instrumental, or vocal performance). Hungary : Fulbright/Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music Award offers training to students with strong music education backgrounds in one of the following: symphonic orchestral instruments, voice, jazz, music education, music history, composition, choir/orchestral conducting or folk music. Ireland : Fulbright/Hugh Lane Gallery Curatorial Award enables an American student to pursue an exciting education curatorial project for up to 12 months working with the Hugh Lane team. The project will contribute to the gallery's strategy, as well as the Dublin City Council’s strategy, of embedding a culture of continuous engagement between the Hugh Lane Art Gallery and Dublin's communities. The project will involve working with communities in the city as well in the gallery, establishing and developing strong links between the cultural institution and the communities. Fulbright/University College Cork Masters in Creative Writing Award enables students to pursue a taught Masters in Creative Writing. Netherlands : Fulbright/American Friends of the Mauritshuis Award will focus on the study, examination and treatment of works of art in the collection of the Mauritshuis, in combination with a tailor-made study program at the University of Amsterdam. The grantee will gain practical experience and knowledge in in-depth technical study and treatment of paintings in the conservation studio of the Mauritshuis, under the supervision of the conservators of the museum.  

Taiwan : National Cheng Kung University offers a Master’s Degree program award in Creative Industries Design. T his award enables American students to pursue a full-time Master’s degree program. The program is taught in English.

United Kingdom : Trinity Laban Award in Music & Dance and the University of Roehampton Award in Dance all fund a one-year Master’s degree or the first year of a longer Master’s or PhD program.

Fulbright Business Grants

Finland : Fulbright-LUT Graduate Award is available for a student in the fields of business or technology. The award is primarily aimed at students who wish to complete a full Master’s degree at Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology.

Mexico : Binational Internships enhance the knowledge, expertise, and understanding of post-NAFTA Mexico. This award is available for students interested in combining coursework in international business or law with an internship at a Mexico-based company conducting international or legal business.

Spain : Fulbright/IE University Award for International MBA offers awards to pursue the following full-time Master's program at IE Business School:

Fulbright IE University Master's Award at IE School of Business/IE School of Science and Technology offers one award for any of the following full-time masters at IE School of Business: 

• Master in Talent Development & Human Resources
• Master in Creative Direction, Content and Branding
• Master in Digital Marketing

• Master in Business Analytics & Big Data 

Taiwan : National Taiwan Normal University offers a Master’s Degree program award in International Human Resource Development (MBA) . This award enables American students to pursue a full-time Master’s degree program. The program is taught in English.

Fulbright Journalism & Communication Grants

Germany : The Young Professional Journalist Program typically begins with the grantees undertaking individual research, followed by one or more internships with German media institutions. Applicants should be beginning professional journalists or recent graduates in journalism or related fields with no more than 7 years of professional experience.

Fulbright Grants in STEM and Public Health

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applicants in the sciences to all eligible countries. Please note some specific grants below:

Austria :  Fulbright-Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation Award for Research in Science and Technology offers support for full-time research in STEM fields.

Australia : Western Sydney University Award enables American students to undertake research in the following fields of study: Creative and Performing Arts (all fields), Environmental Studies, Social Justice and Public Health. The Fulbright Anne Wexler Scholarship in Public Policy award will enable U.S. students with strong academic credentials and leadership potential to undertake a master's degree in Australia in a key area of public policy such as health, sustainability, energy, climate change, regional security, education, political science, history, or government relations.

Chile : Pursuant to the Commission's interest in supporting study at Chile's leading science centers, the Chile Science Initiative Award will be given with preference for students conducting Master's-level or Ph.D. study/research in science and technology fields.

Hungary : Fulbright/Budapest Semesters in Mathematics-Rényi Institute enables an American student to reside one academic year (two semesters) at Budapest Semesters of Mathematics (BSM), take courses, and to take part in the activities of BSM.

Iceland : Fulbright-National Science Foundation Arctic Research Grant is open to students in all social and natural science fields as they relate to the Arctic and the people living there.

Ireland : Fulbright/RCSI PhD Awards enables US citizens to complete a fully funded PhD at the Royal College of Surgeons, an innovative, pioneering international health sciences education and research institution dedicated to breakthroughs in human health.

Netherlands :   Fulbright/Delft University of Technology: Industrial Design Engineering Award offers an opportunity in one of three MSc degree programs in Industrial Design Engineering: Design for Interaction (DfI), Strategic Product Design (SPD), and Integrated Product Design (IPD). Fulbright/NAF Fellowship in Flood Management is limited to research related to flooding. Applicants should have attained their undergraduate core technical skills already but will want to complement these with a graduate multidisciplinary study of water management aspects, such as: assessment of flooding risks, spatial planning in flood-prone areas, and mitigating flood impact and flood risk reduction.

South Korea: The U.S.-Korea Presidential STEM Initiative Award offers awards for research projects in all STEM fields for applicants of all degree levels.

Spain : Fulbright IE University Master's Award at IE School of Business/IE School of Science and Technology offers one award to pursue a full-time Master's degree in Business Analytics and Big Data Taiwan : National Taiwan University offers a Master’s Degree program award in Global Health or Agricultural Economics . Additionally, National Cheng Kung University offers a Master’s Degree program award in Energy Engineering . These awards enable American students to pursue full-time Master’s degree programs. The programs are taught in English. Master’s Degree Program Awards: Taipei Medical University Awards in Mind, Brain, and Consciousness allows research topics that span across philosophy, cognitive psychology and neuroscience, such as neuro-ethics, attention and memory, sleep, mindfulness, selfhood, circadian rhythms and mood, and social cognition.

Open call for five fully funded PhD projects at the AISSR

Our goal is to assemble a diverse and exceptional cohort of candidates. We aim to recruit candidates with a broad range of epistemologies, disciplines, and backgrounds. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to join the AISSR’s PhD program and embark on their individual research projects under the supervision of AISSR faculty members.

Applications will be assessed according to three criteria:

(1) Quality, significance, and feasibility. We are in search of proposals that hold the potential to deliver groundbreaking insights. Applicants should provide a clear and comprehensive plan for how these insights will be generated.

(2) Fit with the AISSR. The proposals should align well with existing research and expertise within the institute to promote synergy and ensure high-quality supervision.

(3) Diversity, broadly defined. We are looking for candidates with distinct profiles and expertise, perspectives, and backgrounds and the potential to help shape the future of the social sciences.

An interdisciplinary committee, comprising representatives from all four departments within the AISSR, will evaluate the applications.

You are an ambitious and talented researcher with a passion for the craft of social science research. You are excited about your research project and have a clear, feasible plan on how to conduct this research. You are committed to contributing to the academic community in different ways, from helping with the organization of activities to participating in interdisciplinary debates. You have excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

Eligibility

Applicants must have a master's degree or equivalent within the social sciences by September 1st 2024.

What can we offer you?

We offer a temporary employment contract of 38 hours per week for a maximum term of four years. The initial employment is for one year and the preferred starting date is September 1, 2024. Following a positive assessment, this term will be extended by a maximum of three years, which should result in the conferral of a doctorate. You will attend courses offered by the AISSR and the Graduate School of Social Sciences as part of the PhD program. In addition to doing research, publicizing your findings, and participating in academic events, you will be involved in teaching (roughly 10% of your time).

For this position the University Job Classification profile “Promovendus” applies. Your salary will be €2,770 gross per month in the first year and will increase to €3,539 in the final year, based on full-time employment of 38 hours per week and in keeping with the  Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities . We additionally offer an extensive package of secondary benefits, including 8% holiday allowance and a year-end bonus of 8.3%. The UvA offers excellent possibilities for further professional development and education.
