Luckily, there are lots of fun spelling activities that you can use to liven up your child’s learning. These ideas are perfect for children in KS2 (Years 3-6) — why not take a look?

Fun spelling activity ideas for KS2

1. rainbow words.

With spelling, repetition is key. But rather than writing out the same word lots of times on a piece of paper, why not use a colourful rainbow?

This activity is specifically designed to encourage daily practice, making it a great way to learn tricky words.

• Print out an image of a rainbow on a piece of A4 paper. Or, encourage your child to draw their own, leaving enough space in between each band of colour to easily write words.
• Encourage them to take a few minutes each day to fill in a band of colour by writing out the word they’re learning, starting with red.
• They’ll write the word fewer times each day as they work through the rainbow. Once they’ve completed their rainbow, challenge them to spell the word without looking!

2. Spelling scramble

This activity is perfect for more confident spellers. To get started, write out lots of letters onto squares of card or paper — or, for speed, you could hijack a game of Scrabble and use the letters from it!

Once you have a large collection of letters, ask your child to see how many words they create using them. You could also set them additional tasks for each word to explore them further, such as:

• Can you spell a word that rhymes with this one?
• How would you spell the plural version of this word?

For a further level of challenge, you could also include capital letters, hyphens and apostrophes in your mix of letters.

4. Spelling staircase

This method is ideal for children learning a word for the first time or for breaking down more challenging spellings.

Ask your child to write the first letter of the word they’re learning. On the line below it, ask them to write the first letter followed by the second, and so on until they’ve written out the whole word. For example:

5. ‘What am I?’ quiz

This game is great for those who love puzzles. Challenge your child to not only spell a word correctly, but to also guess what it is through the use of clues!

We recommend giving three clues as to what the word could be. For example, if your word was ‘bell’, you could say:

• It’s an object that makes a noise
• Lots of people have them on their front doors at home
• It rhymes with ‘smell’!

Reward them with a point for guessing what the word is and another for spelling it correctly.

6. The speediest speller

Finally, here’s a game that’s perfect for groups of two or more children. Give every learner a whiteboard and, when everyone’s ready, say a word out loud. The first child to spell the word correctly earns a point.

Gradually increase the difficulty of words as you go, and make sure to show the correct spelling of the word at the end of each round. Be sure to celebrate everyone’s hard work and determination at the end of the game!

The PDF includes a report about a class trip to a museum, and children are told that there are 19 spelling mistakes, nine of which are homophones, as well as eight punctuation errors and five grammar slip-ups.

Earth Day is April 22 in the United States and the day the spring equinox occurs in some parts of the world. It’s a day to reflect on the work being done to raise awareness of climate change and the need to protect natural resources for future generations. Protecting the earth can feel like an enormous, distant undertaking to young people. To help them understand that they can play a role by focusing on their backyards or school yards, educators can scale those feelings of enormity to manageable activities that make a difference.

We collected simple ideas for teachers and students to educate, empower, and build a connection with nature so that they may be inspired to respect it and protect it. Classrooms can be the perfect greenhouse to grow future stewards of the environment.

Spelling Shed Curriculum Overview

Spelling Shed provides a series of word lists for grades K-5 that have been developed by applying the Science of Reading research and follow a systematic progression. The progression covers a range of phonics skills, high-frequency words, and morphological awareness, typically addressed in each grade level. Our curriculum aligns with current ELA standards for grade K-5.

Every grade has core foundational skills incorporated into the list progression, at varying degrees of difficulty, depending on the grade level.

• K-2 word lists are based mostly on phoneme-grapheme correspondences (GPCs), beginning with the most common patterns to more advanced ones. The majority of the words selected for each list contain only the GPCs that have been previously reviewed, to avoid cognitive overload, help ensure focus, and attain mastery of the skill at hand.
• In grades 3-5 as the shift from phonics to morphology becomes increasingly important, the word lists begin to focus more on providing opportunities to spell through meaning, with less emphasis on GPCs.
• Grades K-3 word lists integrate grade-level appropriate, decodable and partially decodable Dolch HFWs and Fry’s Instant 300 HFWs.

For districts that already have word lists or follow a word study curriculum, teachers can easily import those spelling word lists to use with Spelling Shed. We also feature ready made lists of popular reading series including HMH Journeys® and McGraw-Hill Reading Wonders®. We also provide traditional high-frequency word lists like Dolch and Fry along with regional based spelling lists like UIL for Texas.

Spelling Games

In order for words to move into long term memory students need an opportunity to play with their words. Spelling Shed has designed several engaging games that will help students do just that. Our main spelling game has four different levels to provide students with the right amount of support. Missing Word, another popular game asks students to identify the correct spelling of the specific word.

No more time wasted searching for word lists! Teachers have the option to create full years worth of assignments with a few clicks of the mouse or can create weekly assignments to target the needs of specific learning groups.

Teachers can track the group or class progress throughout the week with Assignment Rank. Students are provided with six different levels in regards to how well they are progressing with the weekly word lists. Levels in Spelling Shed are determined by accuracy as well as game difficulty

Hive Games are engaging “live” spelling tests that display real time student data and are a favorite among students and teachers. Trends can quickly be identified for spelling misconceptions. All users have an avatar which can be personalized . Avatar upgrades can be purchased using Honeypots. Honeypots are earned by spelling words correctly in all game types and in other EdShed games like MathShed.

All Spelling Shed games provide a score for correct answers, speed bonus, and streak bonuses. A shed score is the total score for the past 7 days. Leagues and group leagues use the Shed Score to show current performance. World Leagues show the top 100 groups by Shed Score
