More than 500 volunteers support the Museum throughout the year, in a variety of roles.

Volunteers share their knowledge and enthusiasm by delivering daily eye-opener tours, they help the public enjoy the collection in numerous other ways and support behind-the-scenes activities in almost every department. And that's just the start.

Every volunteer offers invaluable support to the Museum, and they get something back from it too.

Volunteer stories

Volunteering with the British Museum can offer fascinating and rewarding experiences.

From Spotlight to LGBTQ tours, there are many ways to become involved. Find out about the different roles and what a few of our volunteers had to say.

Hands on desks

Volunteer-run Hands on desks allow visitors to handle real objects, and to find out more about the collection, through relaxed informal conversations.

Volunteers facilitate the object handling, encourage discussion and answer visitors' questions.

'The most enjoyable aspect of volunteering on the Hands on desks is the interaction with the visitors. Every time, I get to talk to different people from all over the world. Through discussions with them, I learn more about the objects.

'My favourite memory is when I met a visitor from Turkey and we discussed the Arabic coffee pot. She worked at a museum in Istanbul and was an absolute expert in the objects! So instead of me giving her an introduction, she explained to me the whole history of Turkish coffee. That really made my day!'

– Bihe, Islamic World Hands on desk

Behind the scenes

Volunteering opportunities behind the scenes vary according to the work of each department and their current needs.

Departmental volunteers help with tasks such as cataloguing   objects, evaluating exhibitions and delivering learning programmes.

'I really enjoy volunteering with the Communities department. I get to see so many interesting things from all over the world. For example, the beautifully made padded jacket from Western China is so practical and warm, and is decorated with wonderful colours. I also love being part of a team and discovering the variety of work that's conducted within the museum.'

– Jane, Communities team

Eye-opener tours

Eye-opener tours introduce visitors to the Museum's collection through a variety of guided talks that take place in different galleries across the Museum. There are 15 tours that run every day on a range of topics.

'Since I was an undergraduate archaeology student in Syria, it was one of my dreams to visit the British Museum one day and see the objects that I spent my time studying in books and museum catalogues.

'In the beginning, I wasn't sure that I could conduct the Eye-opener tour. However, with the support of the Volunteers' Office and my fellow volunteers, I was able to overcome my worries.'

– Mohamad, Eye-opener tours

Friday night Spotlight tours

Friday night spotlight tours.

The spotlight tours introduce visitors to key objects in the Museum's collection. We offer four tours every Friday evening, each lasting about 20 minutes.

Volunteers take visitors on a short tour of the collection and answer questions.

'I've always loved visiting the British Museum - it is a beautiful building, with so much to enjoy and discover inside.

'Learning about the objects on my tour is always fun. My favourite object to talk about is the Rosetta Stone. Visitors just love it and are genuinely keen to find out all they can.'

– Cecilia, Spotlight tours

LGBTQ tours

Volunteers are actively involved in delivering, shaping and developing guided LGBTQ tours of the British Museum. The Museum's collection – and the LGBTQ tours – both show that same-sex love, desire and gender diversity are an integral part of human experience. The way they have been expressed culturally has varied widely around the globe and over time.

'I've always been interested in the way the past has influenced who we are and I was keen to share my enthusiasm for that story with British Museum visitors.

'I believe that our LGBTQ tours are a great way of highlighting same-sex desire and gender fluidity through the exceptional range of historical periods and cultures covered by the museum's collections. People joining the tour get an understanding of how widespread these themes are in the human experience.'

– Chris, LGBTQ tours

Touch tour volunteers

A volunteer-facilitated Touch tour is available for blind and partially-sighted visitors in the Egyptian sculpture displays (Room 4). The tour features nine objects and lasts about an hour. Volunteers welcome the attendees, helping them navigate the physical space of the Museum and guide their exploration of the tour objects through touch and discussion.

'The touch tours are very intimate, as you only have one or two visitors and you can really tailor the experience to suit their interests. Helping visually impaired visitors access the collection is a privilege, and I love to make their visit extra special.

'It's an absolute privilege to be part of this wonderful institution and volunteering at the British Museum has become an integral part of my identity and an aspect of my life that I truly cherish.'

– Mariu, Touch tours

Research volunteer

Get involved with our research

Some of our research projects rely on the generosity of people like you. Whether it's harnessing the power of your home PC, taking part in a clinical trial, or simply volunteering your time for a study, you may be able to contribute to some of the ground-breaking projects which make the University of Oxford a world leader in research. Watch this space for ways in which you could get involved.

Investigating children’s understanding of data practices on YouTube

Human Computer Interaction (HCI) group, at the Department of Computer Science Ethical Approval Reference: CS_C1A_021_028

What is the purpose of the research?

YouTube has been one of the most used platforms by children, however, children and parents are sometimes unaware of the data collection practices on the YouTube platform. We would like to investigate how children aged 7-13 perceive the data collection and processing practices on the YouTube platform, and what children expect to be supported that may help them navigate their data on YouTube.

Who can take part?

  • We would like to recruit children ( aged between seven and 13 ).
  • We are looking for children who spend at least two hours per week on YouTube

What does the study involve?

Participants will have the option to take the study either in-person or online. All children participants will be asked to complete a 30-40-minute interview with the researchers (with at least two researchers present in the interview for safeguarding). Children will be using their own device to complete a few tasks on YouTube during the interview. Your child will be asked about their current experience and usage of YouTube and how they make use of video recommendations on YouTube. We will then show them two videos on how YouTube collects and processes their data and ask about their perceptions.

Where does the study take place?

Family participants will have the option to do the study either in-person or online.

What will my children learn?

We hope through taking part in this research, your child would have more awareness and a deeper understanding of the data collection and processing practices on the YouTube platform, therefore help them to make more informed decisions about their data in the future.

Expenses and payments?

All travel expenses would be reimbursed. A small gift voucher will be provided as a thank-you gift.

How can you and your children take part?

If you are interested in taking part, please email  [email protected]

For more information, please follow this link: https://koala.web.ox.ac.uk/participants-wanted

Depending on the study you volunteer for, you will either undergo an online self-help treatment programme or lab-based non-invasive brain stimulation sessions prior to bedtime. You will be reimbursed for your time.

If you are interested in taking part or would like more information, please contact the research team directly at [email protected]

Volunteers with lazy eye wanted

We are looking for volunteers with a history of lazy eye, patching or amblyopia to take part in our brain scanning study on how binocular vision relates to brain chemistry.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for healthy, fluent English volunteers aged 18-45 with a history of lazy eye, patching therapy or amblyopia.

You will also be asked questions about your medical history to check your suitability for an MRI scan.

Participants will be reimbursed for their time.

How can I find out more?

If you are interested and would like more information please contact Betina Ip in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, University of Oxford, by emailing [email protected] or visit amblyopiaproject.wordpress.com

What is volunteering?

Volunteering is an active, deliberate pursuit, and can take many different forms. Each volunteer chooses an activity they want to do, motivated by the difference they want to make, to make the world a better place.

  • which aims to make the world a better place, by making a positive difference to our local and global communities, or the planet.
  • which is your own free choice as an individual.
  • without being paid.

A volunteer might not consider themselves to be a volunteer.

"It's about being focused with the youngsters, and it's really fulfilling; I don't actually even think about it as being volunteering. It's been part of my life for so long. It's not something extra I go and do. It's what I do." – Peter Bishai, Campus Technical Manager, coaches a basketball team and supports the running of the club.

Volunteering can involve anything from doing shopping for a neighbour, being a trustee or coaching a sports team, preserving natural green spaces, to acting with others to help tackle issues from climate change and racism to food and fuel poverty.

This diversity has often made ‘volunteering’ a tricky thing to define. At King’s, we see a broad range of service in action, and at King’s Volunteering, we focus on activities that support our local, national and international communities. Volunteers can find their own activities or use the King’s Volunteering platform to find a role that suits them.

Any and all volunteering that supports a charity or community group can be logged on the King's Volunteering platform which provides a verified record of volunteering activities and may qualify for inclusion on a student's Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR) when they graduate.

“Volunteering is just part of my outlook of how to live with people – by extending helping hands, because you never know which side of the hand you’re going to be.” – Rev’d Sarah Farrow, Vice Dean and Chaplain to the St Thomas’ & Waterloo Campuses

Types of volunteering

Volunteering might be structured and organised through a, community group or charity. It may be more self-directed or spontaneous, like litter picking, or the plethora of mutual aid witnessed during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. It may be a regular activity, a one-off, or anything in-between.

At King’s Volunteering, we support a range of volunteering activities, that usually fit into one of four types:

  • Service Led Volunteering – University, Service Led activities to benefit the student and staff experience.
  • Micro-Volunteering - small acts of kindness that take up little time. For example, making cards for care homes, knitting hats for the homeless, and making survival blankets out of crisp packets.
  • One-off Volunteering - volunteering opportunities that are conducted on or off campus. Examples include litter picking, supporting at food banks, volunteering at an event and gardening.
  • External Volunteering - volunteer with a charity or not-for-profit organisation, gain experience and use academic studies or professional skills. There are lots of ways to get involved, some roles include administration, welfare advice, befriending and environmental projects.

All staff at King’s get three days a year to volunteer

Everyone employed by King’s can choose to spend up to three days or 21 hours per year doing voluntary work for another organisation or volunteering scheme, regardless of the role you have at King’s. The time you can take to volunteer is pro-rated if you work here part-time. If you have used your Service Time this year, please let us know by completing this online form.

Volunteer with us and help wildlife across London

Volunteers standing in a line at Yeading Brook Meadows

Our volunteers help London's wildlife thrive – without them we wouldn't be able to continue protecting and enhancing nature.

Whether you're a nature novice or an ecology expert; everyone is welcome to get involved. volunteering with us will give you new skills and experience, learning from qualified professionals.   .

There are lots of different ways to get involved with London Wildlife Trust in locations across the capital, for example surveying, practical conservation, or meeting visitors, amongst other opportunities.

Key information:

  • All volunteers must be aged 16 and over. 16 and 17-year-olds need parental consent unless they are in employment. Sometimes there are rules on whether you need to bring a friend, sibling, parent or guardian who is 18+. Please email us to find out more.
  • Expenses can be provided for travel within London and for a lunch of under £6.
  • Any equipment needed is provided by us, but please wear suitable clothing and footwear.
  • You will need to complete a compulsory registration form, please inform your team leader of any relevant medical conditions

Internships - please note:

The National Minimum Wage law allows charities to have unpaid interns, however the sector has faced criticism that the practise takes advantage of those wanting to start their career in the Third Sector, and is a barrier to those unable to work for free.

London Wildlife Trust's previous approach to internships - paying travel and lunch expenses - wasn't as fair as it could have been. We now recognise that those who couldn't afford to work for free were locked out of the opportunity to gain essential experience with us, and as a result we weren't getting the diversity of talent that the organisation needs in order to continue to do great work now and in the future. We've taken advise from fair internships campaigners and we no longer accept unpaid internships at London Wildlife Trust.

Labs and Research

Laboratory volunteer

What will you be doing.

You’ll be helping to process the swab samples that come in to our laboratory in Hampstead, London from new potential stem cell donors. It’s an admin-based role which you’ll carry out on weekdays in slots lasting four hours.

How does this help Anthony Nolan's work?

You’ll be helping to add the thousands of new potential lifesavers who join our stem cell register each year. It takes a lot of work to process samples, so your help will speed up this activity and, ultimately, have these new potential donors ready to be found and donate quicker.

What skills will you need?

  • Basic IT skills.
  • A critical eye for detail.
  • Reliable and quality record-keeping.
  • Organisational skills.

What will you get out of it?

You’ll receive:

  • training in the use of our IT programmes
  • heath and safety training for a laboratory environment
  • robust admin and organisational skills.

You’ll also be playing a key part in someone’s journey in finding their matching stem cell donor. Every swab you help to process could belong to a future lifesaver.

Research volunteering opportunities

People with Parkinson's are the experts on the condition. We make sure their voices are heard in research. Find out the different ways you can join us and get involved.

Who can volunteer?

You don't need a scientific background to get involved in research towards better treatments and a cure.

We're keen to recruit volunteers from all backgrounds. You don't have to have the condition yourself, you could be a partner, family member, close friend or healthcare professional. Your personal experience is what counts.

Apply for our research volunteer roles

Our lay grant reviewers form an important part of how we fund research. They help us to review research applications, to help decide what research we fund.

Anyone who has a personal connection to Parkinson’s can be a lay grant reviewer, no matter what their background or experience. You'll use your unique experience of Parkinson's to contribute to this role.

Read more about this role and find out how to apply.

In this role people work alongside researchers to design and shape vital Parkinson's research. This could include helping researchers to identify important research questions, commenting on study documents or contributing to the design of how the study might be carried out.

Watch a short clip explaining the vital importance of patient and public involvement .

Read more about this role and find out how to apply .

Research Champions help to raise awareness of Parkinson's research and encourage more people in their local area to get involved.

Each month we send our Research Champions a variety of information to share with their networks. Helping more people to find out about the latest Parkinson’s research news, events and opportunities to take part in research.

Read more about this role and find out how to apply .

Parkinson’s affects people of all ethnicities and races, but we know that the majority of people involved in Parkinson’s research in the UK are White. To deliver a better understanding of Parkinson’s as well as treatments and care for everyone, we urgently need this to change.

We’re looking for people with Parkinson’s and their family, friends and carers, as well as researchers, professionals and community leaders from Black, Asian or Mixed Race backgrounds to join this project steering group. This group will use their lived experience to shape and guide this important work.

Our Research Interest Groups (RIGs) are made up of people with Parkinson's, loved ones, and researchers. They work to keep everyone in the Parkinson’s community up to date on research news and opportunities to take part and shape research. They meet regularly, often online, to discuss the latest research and what’s happening locally.

This includes organising a range of excellent research events .

Find out more about our groups .

What it's like to volunteer at an event

A volunteer called Mike

Mike was inspired to volunteer after completing several events including the Leicester Shine Walk, the London 2 Brighton Ultra Marathon and 5 London Shine Marathons. In 2019 he volunteered at Shine events across Birmingham, Leicester, York and London, where he took the opportunity to take on various roles including site-set up, zone management and lead walker.

“Events couldn’t take place without the support of such incredible volunteers. The encouragement they provide throughout the day motivates you to carry on!”  “I’ve made some incredible new friends; we all have a shared passion and I know my Cazi would be so proud. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the different volunteer roles I’ve been lucky enough to fulfil, and I am so looking forward to this year’s Events season!”
