Chances are, you’ll find all the information you need either on the company website or on job-search websites like Jobscan or Glassdoor.

Then, pick your favorite thing about the company and talk about it in your cover letter.

But don’t just describe the company in its own words just to flatter them. Be super specific—the hiring manager can see through any fluff.

For example, if you’re passionate about their product and you like the company’s culture of innovation and independent work model, you can write something like:

So, make sure to do your fair share of research and come up with good reasons why you're applying to that specific company.

#6. Wrap It Up and Sign It

Finally, it’s time to conclude your cover letter.

In the final paragraph, you want to:

  • Wrap up any points you couldn't make in the previous paragraphs. Do you have anything left to say? If there’s any other information that could help the hiring manager make their decision, mention it here. If not, just recap your key selling points so far, such as key skills and expertise.
  • Express gratitude. Politely thanking the hiring manager for their time is always a good idea.
  • Finish the cover letter with a call to action. The very last sentence in your cover letter should be a call to action. This means you should ask the hiring manager to do something, like call you and discuss your application or arrange an interview.
  • Remember to sign your cover letter. Just add a formal closing line and sign your name at the bottom.

Not all jobs require cover letters. So, how do you decide whether to submit one?

The terms we use to refer to other people—and ourselves—can communicate a lot about identity, and sometimes even a single letter can make a big difference. Perhaps you know the words Latino and Latina . But have you encountered Latinx or Latine ? Even if you have, you might still be confused about why they’re used and whether there’s a difference.

In this article, we’ll explain the reasons and ways that Latinx and Latine are used, cover their overlap and differences, and discuss their pronunciation and origin. Along the way, we’ll answer these questions and others:

The word Hispanic carries with it the specification of a person’s language, referring to people from or with a heritage rooted in Spanish-speaking Latin American countries or Spain. Latino is used as an identifier among people from or with a heritage rooted in Latin America, irrespective of language and inclusive of countries where Spanish is not the most widely spoken language, such as Brazil and Haiti. Of course, for some people, both terms apply. A Spanish-speaking person from Mexico, for example, may identify as either Latino or Hispanic depending on the context or situation. A contrasting example is that many (Portuguese-speaking) Brazilians identify as Latino but not Hispanic .

Latinx and Latine as gender-neutral alternatives

Latinx and Latine are gender-neutral alternatives to Latino and Latina . They are also used to describe a group that includes more than one gender. The use of such alternatives is based on the fact that respective -o and -a endings of Latino and Latina correspond to the masculine and feminine forms traditionally assigned to nouns and adjectives in Spanish, which like many other languages assigns grammatical gender to certain words.

In Spanish, the masculine -o ending is traditionally used as the gender-neutral default. This practice is carried over to English in many Spanish-derived words, including Latino .

Terms like Latinx and Latine are examples of a shift away from using inherently masculine terms in this way, representing a move toward truly gender-neutral language . Gender-neutral terms like these avoid specifying gender when it’s unknown or unnecessary to mention. They promote inclusivity and help to reduce discrimination and bias around gender. More specifically, such terms make space for people and others whose gender identities fall outside or beyond the binary of male and female.

What is the difference between Latine and Latinx ?

Latinx and Latine have the same meaning and can be used in all the same ways. Still, those who use them usually use either one or the other due to preferences that can be based on a number of factors, including pronunciation, pluralization, and what language is being spoken. (In this article, we’ll use them interchangeably.)

Unlike many words, Latinx originated in written media, which has resulted in different pronunciations, including [ luh- tee -neks ], [ lat-n- eks ], and, particularly among Spanish speakers, [ la- teen -ek-ees ] (in which the ending -x is said as the name of the letter X in Spanish—“equis”).

This may account for the familiarity that English speakers have with Latinx , which is less so among Spanish speakers. Even with the Spanish pronunciation of X  as “equis,” Latinx can be cumbersome to pronounce as well as apply to adjective-to-noun agreement in Spanish.

In a Spanish-speaking context, Latine is thought to flow more naturally. Adding to its adoption among some speakers is the fact that it can be pronounced easily in both Spanish and English. The E  is often vocalized, resulting in the pronunciation [ lah- tee -ney ]. Other times, especially in English language contexts, it may be pronounced as [ l uh teen ].

Like Latinx , Latine can be used as a noun or as an adjective. When Latine is used as an adjective in Spanish, the noun that it describes can also be modified to reflect a similar gender-neutral variant (as in niñes Latines , meaning “Latine children”). The substitution of -e endings for the gendered -o and -a is already present in Spanish in nouns such as estudiante (“student”) and adjectives such as interesante (“interesting”) and inteligente (“intelligent”).

Similarly, most people also find Latine easier to pluralize in English ( Latines , as opposed to Latinxs , which creates its own questions about pronunciation).

How to use Latine and Latinx 

Is there a “correct” way to use Latinx or Latine ? Use often depends on several factors, including whether the word is being written or spoken, and whether it’s being used when communicating in Spanish or English.

Those who use Latinx or Latine often use them when referring to large groups or entire communities or populations.

In contrast, Latinx or Latine are not usually used when an individual is being addressed or referred to and their gender is known to be male or female. This is also the case when addressing or referring to a group that is either entirely male or entirely female. In both of these cases, the forms Latino and Latina (and their plurals) are usually used. For this same reason, most men and women choose to identify themselves as either Latino or Latina .

Still, others may apply Latine or Latinx in these situations, perhaps in an effort to normalize gender-neutral language.

As always, if you’re wondering how to best refer to an individual, it’s best to ask. Remember that in many cases, people prefer to be identified based on their own or their family’s specific country of origin , such as Puerto Rican or Mexican American.

Who uses Latine and Latinx ?

Today, the term Latinx is most commonly used by people communicating in English, including by bilingual speakers. Latine , used by some in replacement of Latinx , is most commonly used in Spanish communication, with use increasing in English. For example, you may have encountered both in alternate names for Hispanic Heritage Month (sometimes called Latinx Heritage Month or Latine Heritage Month ).

Latine and Latinx both originated among Spanish-speaking LGBTQ+ communities as a means of being gender inclusive. (Read more about their origin in the next section: Where do Latinx and Latine come from?) Many objections to the terms’ use are criticized as being rooted in anti-LGBTQ+ and particularly anti-nonbinary sentiments. In particular, politicized backlash has arisen in response to gender-inclusive efforts that often involve such terms, with notable examples including a ban on gender-neutral language in Argentina and Florida’s Don’t Say Gay Bill in the US.

It’s important to note that not everyone with Latin American heritage uses Latine or Latinx , with many continuing to use Latino as a gender-neutral default.

One reason some individuals choose not to use Latinx in particular relates to compatibility issues with Spanish, especially when spoken. Often because of these issues, the origin of Latinx is sometimes misattributed to white academics—leading some to reject it as a form of colonialism.

This misattribution, however, is criticized for contributing to the erasure of the queer, Latin American roots of the word. Relatedly, it’s also criticized for reinforcing the notion of Latine people as “perpetual foreigners” in the US and operating under the assumption that Latine-created words must themselves only be Spanish words or must be conducive to Spanish-speaking norms. This ignores the fact that Latinx people include English-speakers and non-Spanish-speakers in countries across the Americas—and that Latinx individuals can and do coin words in English that are meant to be used with English language norms.

It’s also important to note that some people object to the word Latino itself—and all of its variations—due to its Eurocentric root (Latin), which has been criticized for erasing the Black, Indigenous, and other non-European heritages and histories of many Latinx people.

Where do Latinx and Latine come from?

Latinx and Latine originated in Spanish-speaking LGBTQ+ communities across Latin American countries and the US. Like Hispanic and Latino , these are both very broad terms that encompass people with many different racial and ethnic backgrounds.

The earliest known uses of Latinx online and in print come from around 2004.

It’s also because of the LGBTQ+ community that Latinx gained greater national visibility in the US in 2016. In response to the mass shooting at Pulse, a queer nightclub in Orlando, Florida, the word Latinx was used in many media reports as a way of encompassing the gender identities of all victims. Awareness of the use and pronunciation of Latinx has increased since then.

Latine emerged around this time, using the non-gender-specific ending -e that’s found in some nouns and adjectives derived from Spanish present participles.

The effort to move away from dominant masculine identities in the Spanish language has a long history. One term that gained some prominence during the 1990s is Latin@ , which was meant to give equal weight to both the -o and -a endings. Though it is still used by some today (mainly in writing, due to its ambiguous pronunciation), Latin@ is often seen as limiting in terms of representing just the -o and -a endings.

In contrast, the -x ending in Latinx and the -e ending in Latine are interpreted as being able to represent a multitude of identities outside of the gender binary, including fluid ones. In particular, the letter X  has a radical history within Latin American culture.

X: A revolutionary letter 

The intersection of language and activism has a long history in Latin America and beyond, continuing today with activist groups pushing for more inclusive language .

The use of X  as an alternate ending in Spanish likely originates in Latin America decades before English speakers became aware of Latinx . Its roots are often traced to the act of crossing out the -o ending in certain words as part of protests and graffiti.

The letter X  also has a central place in the identity of the Mexican American, or Chicano , community. The word Chicano , derived from a particular pronunciation of mexicano (in which the X  is spoken with the Nahuatl sh sound), was originally used in a derogatory way toward Mexican people with Indigenous backgrounds. However, by the mid-1900s, the Mexican American community reclaimed the term Chicano as a way of embracing Indigenous heritage. Alternative forms of Chicano , including Xicano and Xicana , reflect the word’s origin and its use to uplift Indigenous identity. The gender-neutral form Xicanx follows the same pattern as Latinx.

Use of Xicano is often intended as an act of defiance against the legacy of Spanish colonization, In a similar way, many use Latinx and Latine as a way of defying the gender binary.

In English, the letter X  has a history of being used to create gender-neutral terms and words that uplift the LGBTQ+ community. Examples include words like folx , womxn , and the more recent bachelorx .

Similar terms are likely to continue to emerge. The continuing evolution of Latinx and Latine is a great example of how words can evolve across languages and even coexist. It’s also a reminder that the existence of one variant of a word doesn’t delegitimize the existence of another.

Q&A on Trump’s Criminal Conviction

Donald Trump became the first U.S. president, current or former, to be convicted of a criminal offense when a 12-person jury in New York on May 30 found him guilty on 34 felony counts of business fraud as part of an illegal scheme to influence the 2016 election by making payments to suppress a sordid tale of sex with a porn star.

The unprecedented conviction raises questions about what’s next for the 77-year-old man who is in line to become the Republican Party’s nominee for president in 2024.

In remarks at Trump Tower a day after his conviction, Trump called the United States “ a corrupt country ” and declared that he would be “ appealing this scam .”

(Trump also repeated many of the false, misleading and unsupported claims he has made about the judge, the judge’s rulings, the district attorney and other issues related to the trial. For more about Trump’s talking points, see our May 30 article, “ Trump’s Repeated Claims on His New York Hush Money Trial .” He also repeated false and unsubstantiated claims on other issues, such as taxes and migrants .)

Here, we answer some of the questions raised by the former president’s conviction:

What are the next steps in the case? What punishment could Trump face? Will he go to prison? Can Trump vote in the 2024 election? Can a felon run for president, hold office? Can Trump pardon himself on this conviction, if he wins?

What are the next steps in the case?

Sentencing and an appeal are up next in this case.

Sentencing by Justice Juan Merchan is scheduled for July 11. Before that date, a probation officer or someone in that department will interview Trump, and potentially others involved in the case or connected to Trump, and prepare  a pre-sentence report  for the judge. The report includes the personal history and criminal record of the defendant, and it recommends what sentence the defendant should receive, according to the New York State Unified Court System.

“The pre-sentence interview is a chance for the defendant to try to make a good impression and explain why he or she deserves a lighter punishment,” the state court system explains.

Trump’s lawyers have to wait until after the sentencing to appeal the conviction. First, Trump’s lawyers will file motions before the judge “in a couple weeks” saying why they found the trial to be “unfair,” Trump’s defense attorney Todd Blanche  told CNN  hours after the guilty verdict.

Cheryl Bader , a clinical associate professor of law at Fordham University School of Law, said these motions are typical when a defendant is convicted. The defense attorneys will ask the judge to overturn the jury’s conviction. “It’s rarely, rarely granted, and I don’t think there’s a chance that will happen in this case,” she told us in a phone interview.

Blanche told CNN that if the motions aren’t successful, “then as soon as we can appeal, we will. And the process in New York is there’s a sentencing, and then — and then we appeal from there.”

Bader, a former assistant U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey, walked us through the appeals process. “The case is considered completed at sentencing,” she said. “At that point, his lawyers file a notice of appeal … letting the court know that he intends to appeal.”

At that point, they will also request a “stay” on the sentence, meaning a pause on imposing the sentence while the case is being appealed.

This appeal goes to the  Appellate Division, First Judicial Department  in Manhattan. The appeals court doesn’t retry the case. “They’re not going to substitute their judgment on the facts for the jury’s judgment,” Bader explained. Instead, “they’re looking for where there was error that would have led to an improper prosecution or an unfair trial.”

The appeals process would take several months to a year, she said. After the notice of appeal is given, the record of the case is gathered, including trial transcripts, the indictment, pretrial motions, evidentiary rulings, jury selection and instructions, and more. Trump could also appeal the sentencing. The lawyers need to write their arguments for all of the issues they’re objecting to, and that takes time, Bader said.

And then the appeals court needs to consider the case and write a decision on it.

If Trump ultimately isn’t successful at the appellate level, he can appeal to the highest court in New York state, which is called the  Court of Appeals . But the court decides whether or not it takes the case.

After such an appeal to the highest state court, the case would be over — unless Trump tries to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. But there has to be a U.S. constitutional issue for that. “I don’t see one,” Bader said, but perhaps Trump’s lawyers would try to make an argument.

What punishment could Trump face? Will he go to prison?

Whether Trump is sentenced to any time in prison is up to the judge.

Each of the 34 counts of  falsifying business records in the first degree , a class E felony, carries a maximum sentence of up to  four years in prison . The judge could decide to impose the sentences consecutively or simultaneously. However, under New York law,  20 years  is the maximum prison time that Trump could get — not 187 years, as Trump  falsely claimed  in his May 31 remarks.

Norman Eisen , a CNN legal analyst and a senior fellow in governance studies for the Brookings Institution, said that “in the most serious” cases of business records falsification in New York that he studied, “a sentence of imprisonment was routinely imposed.” Trump’s case “is the most serious one in NY history,”  he wrote  on X, predicting that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin “Bragg will likely ask for incarceration & Merchan will consider it.”

While possible, Bader, with Fordham’s School of Law, told us she doesn’t think incarceration will happen.

For a first-time convicted felon, with a low-level, nonviolent felony and a person of advanced age, “under any circumstance like that, there’d be a relatively low chance of incarceration,” she said.

“On the other hand, I could see the prosecutor arguing that here’s a man who has shown disrespect for the court system and the rule of law and has violated the court’s orders on numerous occasions. He is not remorseful. And that in order to promote general deterrence, he needs to be punished,” she said in describing a possible argument from the prosecutor.

Bader said any incarceration sentence “would be only a token amount of time to make the point that Trump is not above the law.” Other sentencing possibilities include probation or a “conditional discharge” with conditions other than incarceration or probation.

The “simplest” option might be for the judge to fine Trump, she said.

Can Trump vote in the 2024 election?

Yes, Trump can vote as long as he is not in jail on Election Day, which this year is on Nov. 5.

Trump owns homes in New York and Florida, but in 2019 he changed his primary residence to Florida. However, Florida law does not apply in Trump’s case because he was convicted in New York. Instead, New York law applies.

“If you were convicted outside Florida, your voting rights are governed by the state where you were convicted,” as the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida explains on its website.

In 2021, New York state enacted a law that “restores the right to vote for a person convicted of a felony upon release from incarceration, regardless of if they are on parole or have a term of post-release supervision,” the New York State Board of Elections says . “If a convicted felon is not incarcerated, they are eligible to register to vote.”

Can a felon run for president, hold office?

Yes. According to Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the U.S. Constitution, there are three qualifications to serve as president: He or she must be at least 35 years old upon taking office, a U.S. resident for at least 14 years and a “natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States.”

“These qualifications are understood to be exclusive,” Josh Chafetz , a Georgetown University law professor, told us last year when we were writing about Trump’s federal indictment related to allegations of mishandling sensitive classified documents after he left office. “Anyone can be president so long as they meet the constitutional qualifications and do not trigger any constitutional disqualifications.”

“Someone can run for president while under indictment or even having been convicted and serving prison time,” said Chafetz, who pointed to the example of Eugene V. Debs, the late labor leader, who, in 1920, ran for president from prison on the Socialist Party ticket and got almost 1 million votes.

There is an exception to that rule. The Constitution says in Section 3 of the 14th Amendment that no U.S. officeholder, including the president, can serve if they are convicted of “engag[ing] in insurrection or rebellion” against the U.S. — something Trump has not been charged with either in this case or the three others he faces.

Six Colorado voters successfully sued in state court to prevent Trump from appearing on that state’s ballot, citing the constitutional amendment barring insurrectionists from holding federal office. But the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the state ruling, “[b]ecause the Constitution makes Congress, rather than the States, responsible for enforcing Section 3 against federal officeholders and candidates.”

Can Trump pardon himself on this conviction, if he wins?

The short answer is no.

Trump was convicted in New York for offenses in violation of state law. Article II, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution states that a president has the “[p]ower to grant reprieves and pardons for offences against the United States.” According to Constitution Annotated , a government-sanctioned record of the interpretations of the Constitution, that means the power extends to “federal crimes but not state or civil wrongs.”

In a case decided in 1925, Ex parte Grossman , the U.S. Supreme Court confirmed that interpretation, writing that the Constitution’s language specifying presidential pardon power for offenses “against the United States” was “presumably to make clear that the pardon of the President was to operate upon offenses against the United States as distinguished from offenses against the States.”

The New York governor has the power to pardon Trump for his conviction of crimes under state law. That’s currently Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat. After the verdict, Republican Rep. Nick LaLota called on Hochul “to immediately announce her intention to pardon President Trump and pre-emptively commute any sentence. To not do so is to allow America to become a banana republic.” Hochul released a statement on May 30 saying, “Today’s verdict reaffirms that no one is above the law.”

Pride Month has officially started as of June 1 and there’s a lot to celebrate.

Throughout history, people who identify with the LGBTQ+ community have struggled to gain equal rights within and to overcome adversity and discrimination.

But what is Pride Month exactly? Here's a look at the history of how it came to be and how it is celebrated.

What is Pride Month?

Pride Month commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York and celebrates the LGBTQ community and the fight for equal rights. 

The Stonewall Uprising began on June 28, 1969 , when police raided the Stonewall Inn, a prominent gay bar in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. The protests that followed are credited with a shift in LGBTQ+ activism in the U.S.

The following year saw some of the first Pride parades in Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. Despite the pivotal role transgender people and women of color played in the riots, including trans activist Marsha P. Johnson , they were largely excluded from early Pride celebrations. 

"The reality is that most of the folks on the front lines at the Stonewall uprising were trans women, trans women of color, other people of color, butch lesbians,” Cathy Renna, Communications Director for the National LGBTQ Task Force, told USA TODAY in 2022. “And yet somehow, the power that was coming together ... to put together Pride events was from cisgender , gay white men.”

Today, Pride Month presents an opportunity for visibility and community. In addition to celebrating LGBTQ love and joy, it’s also a time to highlight important policy and resource issues the community faces. In 2021, NYC Pride banned law enforcement presence at Pride events through 2025 because of escalating violence "against marginalized groups, specifically BIPOC and trans communities."

This year, anti-trans legislation is growing across the country. Anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric online has also lead to threats at schools and hospitals and to trans communities , USA TODAY found.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, 130 bills targeting trans rights have been filed and 325 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been proposed in 2024. More than 650 anti-LGBTQ+ bills were introduced in 2023.

When was Pride Month created?

The first Pride marches in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago happened on June 28, 1970, the first anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.

In New York, thousands marched from Greenwich Village to Central Park in what is widely considered the first Pride parade in the U.S. 

But even before the first Pride parades, the gay rights movement was beginning to gain traction all over the country. In 1950, for example, activist Harry Hay founded the Mattachine Society, the first national gay rights organization. And in 1955, the first lesbian rights organization, the Daught ers of Bilitis , was founded.

The year 1965 saw the first “Reminder Day,” an annual picketing event outside of Philadelphia’s Independence Hall calling attention to the lack of civil rights for the LGBTQ+ community. In 1966, the Mattachine Society staged a “sip-in” at a Greenwich Village bar after the New York Liquor Authority banned serving gay patrons because they were “disorderly,” PBS reports. And in 1966, the Compton's Cafeteria riot began when a police officer manhandled a transgender customer at a San Francisco eatery. This led to the founding of the National Transsexual Counseling Unit. As the LGBTQ+ rights movement grew, the community turned away from outdated terms like transsexual and homosexual to transgender, gay and lesbian. While many consider these terms offensive, some still use them to describe their identities.

The Christopher Street Liberation Day March on June 28, 1970 , marked a shift from politeness to pride. In earlier protests, the “Homophile Movement” of the 1950s and 1960s focused on respectability – dressing in suits and skirts and carrying signs in protest. Post-Stonewall riots didn’t come with a dress code or tone requirement. 

“A new spirit has entered the struggle for homosexual freedom – a new spirit both militant in tone and revolutionary in orientation,” a 1970 Gay Liberation Front flyer reads. “Homosexuals at last have realized that they will never be able to be liberated by politely asking the system. Freedom is never given – it must be taken.”

Lawmakers mark the start to Pride Month on social media

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, President Joe Biden writes a message to the LGBTQ+ community.

“For generations, LGBTQI+ Americans have summoned the courage to live proudly – even when it meant putting their lives at risk,” Biden wrote in the post. “This Pride Month, we recommit to realizing the promise of America for all, to celebrating LGBTQI+ people, and to taking pride in the example they set.”

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) shares the progress that California has made regarding LGBTQ+ rights on X.

“Always proud to represent San Francisco, especially during #PrideMonth as we mark our progress from Compton’s Cafeteria to City Hall, fighting HIV/AIDS to uplifting trans rights,” Pelosi wrote. “We embrace love, advance freedoms and - when we win - will enshrine LGBTQ+ Equality into law. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️”

In a X post, Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) posted a video discussing Pride Month and things that have happened in recent years.

“While we have made incredible progress since the Stonewall riots over 50 years ago, including codifying marriage equality law. It is important to remember that that progress isn’t linear. Over the past few years we have sadly seen terrible attacks at the state and local level towards transgender Americans. We’ve seen members of the LGBTQ community ostracized and persecuted, often by craven politicians, for short term, political purposes," Warnock said. "All the while they are simply living as their most authentic selves. But that cannot weaken our resolve to keep working to build what Dr. King called the ‘beloved community’ where all of God’s children are embraced, no matter who they are, where they come from or who they love.”
