The Cinematic Codes Review is seeking reviewers to submit regular tri-annual sets of or single-item reviews of any time of visual content that is of individual interest. Ideas can range from standard reviews with screen shots of recent releases, as well as scholarly reviews of classics. You can review fine art gallery shows, theatrical dramas, or minor films shown at festivals. Reviews can be short (a few hundred words) or very long essays (up to 8,000 words). You can submit a single review, or commit to submitting regular reviews three times per year. The deadlines for the issues are: August 1, December 1, and May 1. Work that arrives after the deadline will be considered for the next issue. Work published in CCR should not have been previously published in other publications. Learn more about CCR's past issues here: https://anaphoraliterary.com/journals/ccr/ Email the completed submission to the Editor, Dr. Anna Faktorovich, at [email protected] by the upcoming August 1 deadline.
Cinematic Codes Review: ISSN 2473-3385 (print); ISSN 2473-3377 (online): now in its 9th year in print, CCR features works in all visual genres, especially those with moving pictures, be they music videos, feature films, documentaries, photography, or just about any other mode or genre of art that does not fall into the realm of “literature,” which will be the primary object of Anaphora’s Pennsylvania Literary Journal . The other term in the name is “codes” and the intention here is to go beyond the simple summary or theme of the projects criticized in this journal’s pages to the codes and meanings that are hidden beyond the superficial. The third component of the journal is a dedication to reviewing and criticizing the arts, as opposed to applauding and viewing them. A great review should help artists to make better art by pointing out flaws. There is no such thing as perfect art, as all art is still in its infancy, and the last couple of centuries have seen great leaps in its evolution. There is a long road ahead for art, and it’s the critics’ job to take it in the right direction. Artists are not children that need to be congratulated on their mistakes. They should see profits in honest negativity, and the downfall of creativity in false flattery.

Researchers from the annenberg public policy center found that more social media use actually correlates with more vaccination, but the reasons differ between democrats and republicans..
Both scholars and journalists have raised concerns that social media use might push down vaccination rates by spreading misinformation about vaccines. The relationship between social media use and vaccine uptake has never been properly examined, however. In a new paper, researchers from the Annenberg Public Policy Center (APPC) found that more social media use actually correlates with more vaccination—though the reason for this relationship is different for Democrats and Republicans.
“ Social media use and vaccination among Democrats and Republicans: Informational and normative influences ,” published this month in the journal Social Science & Medicine , examines via survey whether social media use is associated with less or more vaccination. Because social media algorithms can deliver users politically polarizing content, the research team also asked whether this relationship varies by political party.
The researchers found “a consistent positive relation between social media use and vaccination across all major party affiliations,” they report in the paper.
“Contrary to frequent perceptions that social media misinformation drives vaccine distrust, we found that consuming health-related social media is associated with more frequent vaccination,” says lead author Stephanie DeMora , a postdoctoral fellow at the APPC.
Though this association exists across political parties, the reason for it varied. Use of social media exposed Democrats to more information about new pathogens, and that information predicted greater vaccine uptake. Use of social media led Republicans to believe that people important to them were vaccinated, and that is what predicted vaccine uptake in that group.
Both scenarios, the authors write, “underscore the positive potential for social media campaigns”—especially if those campaigns are tailored to their intended audience.

Harvard Business School (HBS) has once again set the stage for aspiring leaders to showcase their potential with the release of its new MBA essay prompts for the 2024-2025 application cycle. This extremely rare update presents both a challenge and an opportunity for applicants to showcase their unique experiences and perspectives. In this article, we’ll explore these new prompts, provide strategic advice on how to approach them, and offer tips to help you craft top-of-the-barrel essays that can enhance your application.
The old HBS essay prompt was, "As we review your application, what more would you like us to know as we consider your candidacy for the Harvard Business School MBA program?" Instead of one, longer essay, aspiring candidates of the class of 2027 have three, shorter essay prompts to respond to:
Please reflect on how your experiences have influenced your career choices and aspirations and the impact you will have on the businesses, organizations, and communities you plan to serve. (300 words)
Breakdown: The main goal of this prompt is to connect your past experiences with your future career goals. That said, it’s an opportunity to show how your journey has shaped your professional ambitions and commitment to making a positive impact. HBS wants to see that you know where you've been and where you're going and that there is a narrative that ties it all together. Here’s how to approach it:
What experiences have shaped who you are, how you invest in others, and what kind of leader you want to become? (250 words)
Breakdown: This prompt asks you to explain your personal development and leadership philosophy. It’s all about introspection and understanding how your experiences have molded your approach to leadership.
Pro Tip: If you’re having trouble nailing down or putting words to your particular brand of leadership, try taking a leadership style quiz. Lucky for you, Harvard has its own page for this exact dilemma! Using the resources provided here by HBS – and perhaps even mentioning them in your essays or interviews – will help you stand out as an applicant familiar with the resources HBS has to offer.
Curiosity can be seen in many ways. Please share an example of how you have demonstrated curiosity and how that has influenced your growth. (250 words)
Breakdown: HBS is using this prompt to see how the gears turn in your head. They want to know if you have intellectual curiosity and if so, how it drives your personal and professional growth. Treat this prompt as an invitation to highlight a specific instance where your curiosity led to significant learning or development.
1. be specific and concrete.
Avoid vague generalizations and instead focus on giving specific examples that illustrate your points. Use detailed anecdotes to bring your experiences to life. Whether you’re discussing a professional achievement, a leadership challenge, or a moment of curiosity, specificity will make your essay more engaging and memorablee. Writing descriptive stories with clear points and imagery allow the admissions committee to better visualize your experiences and understand your unique journey, and will ultimately benefit your application in the long run.
Leadership and growth are central themes in the HBS essays. Highlight instances where you’ve demonstrated leadership, invested in others, and pursued personal and professional growth. Reflect on how these experiences have shaped your leadership style and growth mindset. By letting your leadership potential and commitment to continuous improvement shine through to the admissions committee, you’ll prove that you’re a perfect match with HBS’s core values.
While it’s important to be authentic and personal, make sure your essays maintain a professional tone. Especially for the business-minded essay, focus on professional experiences and how they have influenced your career choices. Striking the right balance between personal insight and professional achievement is crucial for a compelling narrative.
Once you’ve drafted your essays, seek feedback from trusted mentors, peers, or professional advisors. Fresh perspectives can help provide valuable insights and help you refine your narrative. Be open to constructive criticism and use it to enhance the clarity, coherence, and impact of your essays.
Keeping any given feedback in mind, carefully edit and proofread your essays to ensure they are free from any grammatical errors and typos. Clear, error-free writing tells the admissions committee that you have a strong attention to detail and commitment to excellence. Reading your essays aloud or using text-to-speech tools can help catch errors you might miss while reading silently. A polished essay enhances your professionalism and credibility.
By following these tips, you’ll be on the right track to write essays that not only meet the HBS application requirements but also perfectly embody your unique strengths, experiences, and aspirations. Good luck with your application process!

The supplemental essay prompts for upenn.
The University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) requires its applicants to submit a personal essay, most frequently through the Common Application, and three supplemental essays in addition. There are additional supplemental essays that are required for some applicants, such as those for particular programs or transferring from another school.
The three supplemental essays required for all applicants are:
If you are looking for an overview of UPenn’s supplemental essays and advice on how to write your responses, check out this article on CollegeVine.
UPenn refers to their essays as a way to learn what applicants value, how they see the world, and what their voices will bring to the school’s community. In a nutshell, the admissions officers at the University of Pennsylvania are trying to get to know you through your responses.
The admissions office suggests that applicants review each prompt thoroughly, consider responses carefully, and double-check their writing. As such, organizing your thoughts, writing intentional responses, and proofreading your UPenn essays is key to the process.
Remember that UPenn is also evaluating your 650-word personal statement, most likely submitted through the Common App. Supplemental essays are an opportunity to highlight another aspect of yourself, instead just revisiting other application materials.
If possible, consider this when writing both your Common App essay and supplemental essays. Applicants should not focus on something that has already been covered in another part of their application. For example, because UPenn’s third prompt asks you to discuss an academic interest, writing about your intended major in your Common App essay might make finding a topic for your supplemental essays more difficult.. Writing a unique Common App essay helps applicants avoid this overlap and keep things engaging for the admissions officers reviewing your application.
If you are unsure how to ensure each essay is distinct, start by trying to brainstorm what the fundamental elements of your personality are, the values you hold, and the experiences you have had. Then, for each supplemental essay prompt, see if you can focus on a different item in that list. Because the admissions officers are using these essays to get to know you as a person, you want to make sure that your essays touch on different aspects of who you are.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the tone of your essays should vary, as well. Submitting some essays that are more serious, while keeping others lighthearted, is more likely to keep the reader interested. It also allows you to show off different sides of your writing style and personality.
