Temple University Acceptance Rate – 2024. Already a large institution with over 20,000 undergrads, Temple University is growing in popularity. In fact, the class of 2028 saw a record-breaking number of applicants as the undergraduate application deadline passed. The number? By April 1, an impressive 39,681 student applications were submitted. And that’s no joke.
Depending on focused recruitment strategies, with an emphasis on in-person recruitment, Temple visited over 20 Philadelphia high schools this past admissions cycle. The university has also experienced a rise in campus visits. For example, prospective student campus tours increased by 60% in the fall of 2023, no doubt leading to the surge in applications the next spring.
The class of 2028 at Temple University has seen several key areas of growth. Most notably, international student applications rose by 20%, with out-of-state applications breaking another university milestone. Double-digit percentage increases in applications were rampant, with students from Georgia (64%), Illinois (49%), and New Jersey (12%) leading the charge.
With all this increased interest in the university, the Temple University acceptance rate is sure to reflect the influx.
But first, let’s cover the basics.
Founded in 1884, Temple University is a large campus located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A public, four-year institution in an urban setting, the campus sits on over 400 acres. Its official motto is Perseverantia Vincit , or Perseverance Conquers.
With over 360,000 alumni from all over the world, Temple is a rapidly growing school which mostly accommodates out-of-state students. For example, 64% of the total student population are from out-of-state, with 36% of students hailing from Pennsylvania.
Temple University’s campus has nine residence halls or housing units which accommodate ~7,500 students. Student life is abundant with possibilities. In fact, living on campus is a great decision because students have greater access to the more than 300 student organizations, D-1 sports games and nearby shops and restaurants.
Overall, the university offers 18 D-1 sports teams, and the athletic teams are nicknamed the Owls. The school competes as part of the American Athletic Conference. Plus, there are 34 Greek life organizations on campus. So, students looking to live in a fraternity or sorority have plenty of options.
So, what are your chances of getting in?
Temple is moderately selective. The sole public research university in the state, Temple is rated highly as one of the top three public universities in Pennsylvania. For this reason, it makes sense that undergraduate admissions can afford to be somewhat selective.
Overall, the Temple University acceptance rate is 72% .
If you are looking to apply to Temple as a first-year student, then you’ll want to make sure you are first familiar with what their admissions process looks like.
As part of the application process, Temple University is a test-optional school. This means students do not have to submit their standardized test scores, and this absence will not negatively affect the admissions process. However, students who feel that their SAT or ACT score will complement their application can still submit their scores.
But just because Temple University is a test-optional school, does not academics will not factor into the final decision. Temple looks for students who are “serious about academics,” with average GPAs of 3.0. This means making a B average in all high school classes. For reference, the average GPA for the class of 2027 was 3.38.
And though they are test-optional, the average SAT and ACT scores for the class of 2027 were impressive. With the average SAT score being 1280, and the average ACT score being 28.
Overall, however, admissions takes a holistic approach to their decision-making process. Students can choose to submit an application essay, as part of the Common Application. In this section, students can tell the university more about themselves on a personal level, outside of the classroom.
In addition, students should have a varied and relevant set of extracurriculars to showcase. Defining these extracurriculars and community involvements can help the admissions committee gain a better idea of the student’s personality and interests. Ultimately, these extracurriculars will factor into the application review process.
Finally, students have the ability to submit a letter of recommendation with their applications. While this letter of recommendation is optional, it will be reviewed if students choose to send them. If you do choose to send a recommendation, then it should be from someone who is familiar with your abilities as a student. For example, the letter can come from an academic advisor, teacher, or athletic coach.
So, how much is the Temple tuition ?
Ultimately, Temple University is committed to keeping college accessible for all students. Tuition is part of that accessibility. And, they mean it. More than $100 million are awarded in scholarships each year, with seventy percent of eligible first-year students receiving need-based aid.
So, to help with the cost of education, all students who apply for Temple will be automatically considered for academic scholarships .
While the Temple tuition can vary depending on the major and degree program, there are general averages to consider. Though, it is important to note that in-state and out-of-state students will see different rates.
For in-state students, Temple tuition begins at $17,976/per year.
For out-of-state students, Temple tuition begins at $32,376/per year.
Tuition rates are based on full-time enrollment. For undergraduates, full-time enrollment constitutes 12-18 credit hours. Students enrolled in less than 12 credit hours, will be charged on an hourly, per-credit basis. Conversely, students enrolled in more than 18 credit hours may be charged extra fees.
Additionally, students should be aware that Temple tuition can vary based on other factors , like student housing, food, and books and supplies. When adding these expenses to the equation, the cost of tuition does jump.
For example, a College of Liberal Arts student who is a Pennsylvania resident who chooses to live on campus can expect to see a total tuition of about $41,000. This includes the cost of student housing for in-state residents ($11,968) and meal plans ($4,970).
Ultimately, financial aid is based on a student’s estimated cost of attendance over a nine-month period, or traditional academic year. To help get a sense of what Temple tuition will cost you, based on your background and needs, you can use the university’s net price calculator .
At Temple, there are 160 undergraduate majors to choose from in 11 disciplines. Some of these areas of focus include Art and Architecture, Business and Management, Education and Human Development, Engineering, Liberal Arts, Media and Communication, and more.
Typically, the most popular majors tend to be business, management, and marketing. Health professions majors make up the second-most popular degree programs.
However, as we will see from the Temple University notable alumni section, many of their successful graduates ultimately pursued degrees in TV, film, and music.
Let’s take a greater in-depth look at some of the undergraduate majors offered by field.
While this is not a comprehensive list of each undergraduate major offered, we hope it gives you an idea of the major programs offered at Temple University.
Additional areas of study include public health, science and technology, social work, music and dance, and theatre, film and media arts studies.
Plus, new majors may also be emerging at the school. Alongside the spike in student enrollment comes the opportunity for new program growth.
For example, genomic medicine and ecology were recently introduced as new major programs. In 2020, these programs only had five students. Now, four years later, these programs have more than 100 students enrolled. It is likely that new program areas could be introduced in the future or that existing majors see a large surge in interest.
You may be surprised to learn that you are familiar with more than one graduate from Temple University. With a long history of producing successful alumni, the school has many recognizable faces with a Temple University degree to their name.
What ever happened to predictability? Bob Saget was a Temple University alum, most known for portraying Danny Tanner on the show Full House. Plus, another face you’ll probably recognize from TV—Kunal Nayyar is a Temple University alum. Nayyar is likely best known for portraying Raj Koothrappali on the show The Big Bang Theory.
Don’t forget about Tamron Hall, a broadcast journalist and talk show host with an extensive and successful TV resume. Plus, fans of Abbott Elementary will be excited to know that Quinta Brunson is a Temple University alum!
Adding more big names to the list, Daryl Hall—of Hall of Oates—is one of the Temple university notable alumni. Plus, to add to the fun, John Oates also graduated from the school.
With a record-breaking number of applicants for the class of 2028, Temple University is seeing a well-deserved increase in admissions. With its rapid growth and renewed interest, it’s clear that Temple’s recruitment strategies have successfully garnered it a lot of attention. Because of its success, they will most likely continue to focus on in-person recruitment for the next admissions cycle.
It is likely that the class of 2029 will see a similar uptick in total applicants and may even face a shrinking acceptance rate. In this case, the college would grow more competitive in the face of heightened interest.
Of course, it’s difficult to predict exactly what the future holds for this university. But, because of the university’s test-optional policy and commitment to ensuring students receive needed financial aid and scholarships, Temple University ensures a college education remains as affordable and accessible for all.
