Impactful Presentations

Why do presentations often fail to have the impact we desire? One reason is that information alone will never move people. In this course, you’ll go beyond presenting just the facts and figures to craft compelling presentations that will motivate others, inspire action, and enable buy-in. By surfacing what matters to your audience, you’ll learn to create presentations that are both meaningful and memorable. Gain the confidence and skills it takes to shift the way people think, feel, and behave.

Note: While this course is not focused on the visual design of presentations, it does cover a few quick tips to get you started.

Course Outcomes

  • Deliver presentations that spark a shift in beliefs, behaviors, and mindsets.
  • Sequence and convey your information in a way that will create a meaningful journey for your audience.
  • Open hearts and minds by developing a trusted relationship with your audience.
  • Apply techniques to help people pay attention and remember the information you share.
  • Practice with unique presentation methods in order to create an engaging experience for your audience.

What You'll Learn

Week 1: introduction - move your audience, 2 video lessons.

  • Messages That Spark Change—It’s not what you say, but how you say it
  • Mentor Moment—Try something new

1 Assignment

Choose Your Presentation—Choose the 10-15 minute presentation you’ll be workshopping throughout the course. Use an existing presentation or choose from one of our sample presentation prompts. Identify your audience, your starting assumptions for what you must do or include in this presentation, and the skills you most want to grow.

Note: For course assignments, you’ll need access to either Google Slides or Microsoft PowerPoint. There will be multiple opportunities to get feedback on your drafts along the way, though you are not required to give your presentation live to the class.

Week 2: Plan the Journey

4 video lessons.

  • What’s the Point?—Identify the goal of your presentation
  • It’s Not About You—Empathize with your audience
  • Shape Your Story—Build emotional appeal and interest
  • Mentor Moment—Start with emotion

Crafting Story Arcs—Identify the beats, or key moments, of your presentation. Build four potential sequences to determine the strongest organization of your content. Use your learnings from this exercise to iterate your Big Idea and the shift you want the audience to make.

Week 3: Become the Guide

3 video lessons.

  • Create a Connection—Bridge the divide between you and the audience
  • Establish Your Credibility—Inspire trust and belief
  • Keep It Human—Present as your authentic self

Design for Connection, Credibility, and Authenticity—Select different methods for building a connection, establishing credibility, and presenting authentically, and brainstorm how you might bring them to life. Think through the details of implementing these methods by experimenting.

Week 4: Make it Memorable

  • Best Intentions; Bad Presentations—Avoid common presentation mistakes
  • Make Patterns—Encourage understanding and retention
  • Break Patterns—Shake things up to capture their attention
  • Mentor Moment—Find the medium that fits your message

2 Assignments

Create Pattern Breaks—Brainstorm ways to break patterns using physical space, the senses, and audience interactivity. Build experiments to further explore your ideas.

Build a Storyboard—Use the feedback and insights from the first three assignments to create a storyboard for your presentation. Identify opportunities to engage, or re-engage, the audience, and consider the holistic journey through your content. Start a visual mood board to guide design decisions.

Week 5: Conclusion - Look Ahead

  • Bringing It All Together—A Presentation Case Study
  • Mentor Moment—Encouragement to explore
  • The End Is The Beginning—Evolve your story and yourself

Presentation Finale—Design a meaningful ending and evolve the structure and flow of your presentation using insights from the feedback you’ve received. Craft a full second draft, diving more deeply into visual decisions and scripting key moments. Reflect on your experience over these five weeks to understand the skills and techniques you’ve gained and areas to continue growing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do ideo u cohort courses work does my time zone matter.

We offer three types of courses: self-paced courses, cohort courses, and certificate programs. Cohort courses run on a set calendar, with fixed start and end dates. Course learning is self-paced within those dates and requires approximately 4-5 hours per week over 5 weeks. Courses consist of videos, activities, assignments, access to course teaching teams, and feedback from a global community of learners. There are also optional 1-hour video Community Conversations, held weekly by the teaching team.

All of our cohort courses are fully online, so you can take them from any time zone, anywhere in the world. With our cohort course experience , while you'll be learning alongside other learners, you'll still have the flexibility to work at the pace that fits your own schedule. There aren’t mandatory live components, so you don't have to worry about having to log in at a specific time. At the same time, you'll have access to a teaching team, which is composed of experts in the field who are there to provide you feedback, and there are also plenty of options to connect with your fellow learners.

What is the role of the instructor and teaching team? Will learners be able to get feedback?

Course instructors have a strong presence in the courses through the course videos, but they're not actively providing feedback or holding direct conversations with our learners. We have a teaching team to ensure that you have the feedback, guidance, and support you need to learn successfully in your course. Our teaching team members are design practitioners that have experience applying course methods and mindsets in a wide variety of contexts around the world.

Our teaching team consists of teaching leads and teaching assistants, who are experts in their fields. Many of them have been with IDEO U for many years, and we have selected those who have direct experience with applying the course methods and mindsets in all sorts of contexts around the world. They all go through multiple training sessions by our instructional designers on not only on the subject matter, but also on how to create safe and collaborative learning experiences and environments.

What are Community Conversations, and how are they related to the course material?

Community Conversations are one-hour live video conversations hosted by the teaching team on Zoom. These happen once per week, with each one having two to three time options to accommodate different time zones. Each week focuses on the lesson that you’ve just gone through, so the output and the content depend on the specific lessons. You'll have the opportunity if you work together with your peers on the tools and mindsets from the course, reflect on what you’ve learned, and also address any challenges that you might be going through.

What will I have access to during and after my course?

All course materials, including videos, activities, and assignments will be available while you are enrolled in a course. During the 5 weeks of the course, you will have full access to our learning platform and can refer back to it any time. You will only have access to the course materials while you are enrolled.

Assignments must be submitted during the 5-week course duration in order for you to receive a certificate of completion.

Can I take the course with my team?

Absolutely! We have had many teams go through our courses together. For those taking our courses as a team, we provide a number of additional benefits:

1. A Team Learning Guide, developed to provide your team with resources to facilitate offline discussions that complement the in-course experience.

2. A Manage Learners function, which provides visibility into your team's progress within the course.

3. The ability to create a private Learning Circle, which is a closed space for discussion on the learning platform specifically for your team.

For more information, visit our Team Learning page.

Do you offer discounts?

We offer a discount when you enroll in multiple courses at the same time through some of our certificate programs, including Foundations in Design Thinking , Business Innovation , Human-Centered Strategy , and Communicating for Impact .

You can also enter your email address at the bottom of this page in order to receive updates on future offers or possible discounts.

Will I get a certificate after completing a course?

After completing a cohort course, you will be able to add it to your “licenses and certifications” on LinkedIn.

We also have certificate programs that consist of multiple courses. After completing a certificate, you will receive a certificate of completion via email as a downloadable PDF within 1-2 weeks of completing the final required course. Certificates are configured for uploading and sharing on LinkedIn.

How do I purchase a cohort course?

You can purchase a course on our website using a credit card, PayPal, or Shop Pay. For US customers, we also offer installment plans at checkout if you use the Shop Pay method of payment.

Powerful and Effective Presentation Skills: More in Demand Now Than Ever

online course presentation skills

When we talk with our L&D colleagues from around the globe, we often hear that presentation skills training is one of the top opportunities they’re looking to provide their learners. And this holds true whether their learners are individual contributors, people managers, or senior leaders. This is not surprising.

Effective communications skills are a powerful career activator, and most of us are called upon to communicate in some type of formal presentation mode at some point along the way.

For instance, you might be asked to brief management on market research results, walk your team through a new process, lay out the new budget, or explain a new product to a client or prospect. Or you may want to build support for a new idea, bring a new employee into the fold, or even just present your achievements to your manager during your performance review.

And now, with so many employees working from home or in hybrid mode, and business travel in decline, there’s a growing need to find new ways to make effective presentations when the audience may be fully virtual or a combination of in person and remote attendees.

Whether you’re making a standup presentation to a large live audience, or a sit-down one-on-one, whether you’re delivering your presentation face to face or virtually, solid presentation skills matter.

Even the most seasoned and accomplished presenters may need to fine-tune or update their skills. Expectations have changed over the last decade or so. Yesterday’s PowerPoint which primarily relied on bulleted points, broken up by the occasional clip-art image, won’t cut it with today’s audience.

The digital revolution has revolutionized the way people want to receive information. People expect presentations that are more visually interesting. They expect to see data, metrics that support assertions. And now, with so many previously in-person meetings occurring virtually, there’s an entirely new level of technical preparedness required.

The leadership development tools and the individual learning opportunities you’re providing should include presentation skills training that covers both the evergreen fundamentals and the up-to-date capabilities that can make or break a presentation.

So, just what should be included in solid presentation skills training? Here’s what I think.

The fundamentals will always apply When it comes to making a powerful and effective presentation, the fundamentals will always apply. You need to understand your objective. Is it strictly to convey information, so that your audience’s knowledge is increased? Is it to persuade your audience to take some action? Is it to convince people to support your idea? Once you understand what your objective is, you need to define your central message. There may be a lot of things you want to share with your audience during your presentation, but find – and stick with – the core, the most important point you want them to walk away with. And make sure that your message is clear and compelling.

You also need to tailor your presentation to your audience. Who are they and what might they be expecting? Say you’re giving a product pitch to a client. A technical team may be interested in a lot of nitty-gritty product detail. The business side will no doubt be more interested in what returns they can expect on their investment.

Another consideration is the setting: is this a formal presentation to a large audience with questions reserved for the end, or a presentation in a smaller setting where there’s the possibility for conversation throughout? Is your presentation virtual or in-person? To be delivered individually or as a group? What time of the day will you be speaking? Will there be others speaking before you and might that impact how your message will be received?

Once these fundamentals are established, you’re in building mode. What are the specific points you want to share that will help you best meet your objective and get across your core message? Now figure out how to convey those points in the clearest, most straightforward, and succinct way. This doesn’t mean that your presentation has to be a series of clipped bullet points. No one wants to sit through a presentation in which the presenter reads through what’s on the slide. You can get your points across using stories, fact, diagrams, videos, props, and other types of media.

Visual design matters While you don’t want to clutter up your presentation with too many visual elements that don’t serve your objective and can be distracting, using a variety of visual formats to convey your core message will make your presentation more memorable than slides filled with text. A couple of tips: avoid images that are cliched and overdone. Be careful not to mix up too many different types of images. If you’re using photos, stick with photos. If you’re using drawn images, keep the style consistent. When data are presented, stay consistent with colors and fonts from one type of chart to the next. Keep things clear and simple, using data to support key points without overwhelming your audience with too much information. And don’t assume that your audience is composed of statisticians (unless, of course, it is).

When presenting qualitative data, brief videos provide a way to engage your audience and create emotional connection and impact. Word clouds are another way to get qualitative data across.

Practice makes perfect You’ve pulled together a perfect presentation. But it likely won’t be perfect unless it’s well delivered. So don’t forget to practice your presentation ahead of time. Pro tip: record yourself as you practice out loud. This will force you to think through what you’re going to say for each element of your presentation. And watching your recording will help you identify your mistakes—such as fidgeting, using too many fillers (such as “umm,” or “like”), or speaking too fast.

A key element of your preparation should involve anticipating any technical difficulties. If you’ve embedded videos, make sure they work. If you’re presenting virtually, make sure that the lighting is good, and that your speaker and camera are working. Whether presenting in person or virtually, get there early enough to work out any technical glitches before your presentation is scheduled to begin. Few things are a bigger audience turn-off than sitting there watching the presenter struggle with the delivery mechanisms!

Finally, be kind to yourself. Despite thorough preparation and practice, sometimes, things go wrong, and you need to recover in the moment, adapt, and carry on. It’s unlikely that you’ll have caused any lasting damage and the important thing is to learn from your experience, so your next presentation is stronger.

How are you providing presentation skills training for your learners?

7 Public Speaking Exercises to Level Up Your Presentation Skills

  • The Speaker Lab
  • July 22, 2024

Table of Contents

Whether you are a seasoned speaker or just starting, public speaking exercises are crucial for refining your skills and boosting your confidence. These exercises go beyond simply rehearsing your material. They help you develop essential skills like body language, voice control, and audience engagement. Let’s explore some of the best public speaking exercises to improve your presentation prowess.

Power Posing: A Confidence Booster

Have you heard of “ power posing “? This psychological technique can increase your confidence before a big presentation. It involves standing in a posture that signals power and confidence for two minutes. Some examples include standing with your hands on your hips or with your arms raised in a V-shape. The idea is that, just like how you use your body language to communicate to others, you can also use it to communicate to yourself. When your brain registers that you are posing confidently, it releases hormones that increase your confidence .

When preparing to go on stage for a presentation, try out a few power poses. Public speaking is, after all, often about projecting confidence. How you feel internally can greatly influence how others perceive you.

The Power of Non-Verbal Communication

You’ve probably heard the saying “it’s not what you say, but how you say it.” When it comes to public speaking, this saying rings true. Your body language speaks volumes to your audience, sometimes even louder than words. As a result, public speaking exercises that focus on nonverbal communication skills are invaluable.

Using Eye Contact to Connect with Your Audience

Think about how you feel when someone maintains good eye contact while speaking to you. Chances are that you feel more heard and respected than if they practiced poor eye contact. When public speaking, you want to create the same feeling with your audience.

Effective eye contact establishes a connection with individuals, creating intimacy and engagement. Staring blankly at one person for an extended time can feel uncomfortable and unnatural, though. The trick is to spread your gaze around the room, connecting briefly with individuals. Treat it as if you’re having mini-conversations with different people.

Refining Your Non-verbal Communication

In addition to eye contact, your stance and gestures significantly impact how your message resonates. One of the best ways to refine your body language is through public speaking exercises like the one below.

To get started, record yourself practicing a speech. After all, it can be extremely valuable to watch and hear yourself as your audience would experience you. Alternatively, you can use this tool to record yourself and your screen. As you watch the recording back, look for these key elements:

  • Open Posture: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your arms relaxed. Imagine an invisible string pulling you slightly upwards from the crown of your head. Avoid hunching or crossing your arms, as these postures might make you appear closed off or unapproachable.
  • Purposeful Movement: When appropriate, move around the stage with intention. Instead of pacing nervously, connect movement with transitions in your speech to emphasize a point or engage different parts of the audience. Remember, too much movement can be distracting, and not all stages permit freedom of movement.
  • Gestures: Utilize your hands and arms to complement your words. Practice hand gestures that feel natural to you, ensuring they’re not exaggerated to the point of distraction. Don’t forget to review your recordings to ensure your movements look and feel authentic and enhance, rather than distract, from your delivery.

Tongue Twisters: The Ultimate Public Speaking Warm Up

Public speaking often requires articulate speech and clear pronunciation. This is where tongue twisters shine as excellent warm-up exercises for speakers of all levels.

Mastering the quick, repetitive sounds of tongue twisters, like the classic “she sells seashells,” improves your pronunciation clarity. This makes your speech delivery smoother.

Consider practicing tongue twisters before presentations as a warm-up routine. This is helpful whether in front of large formal audiences or even close friends. It significantly improves articulation and breath control, especially if you struggle with feeling anxious. Tongue twisters are fun, lighthearted, and effective, making them a great public speaking exercise.

Impromptu Speaking: Mastering the Art of Thinking on Your Feet

Impromptu speaking, where you speak without extensive preparation, can be incredibly daunting, even for seasoned public speakers. Although nerve-wracking, the reality is that many real-life speaking situations demand some level of off-the-cuff thinking. Utilizing public speaking exercises can be the key to thinking clearly under pressure.

Just imagine being asked an unexpected question in a Q&A session. The better you can formulate clear, engaging answers spontaneously, the more confident you’ll feel. This even applies to impromptu speech situations at your job, a work party, or even at an event or wedding. Impromptu speaking is truly a valuable communication skill with applications beyond the stage.

Impromptu Public Speaking Exercises

Instead of waiting for an impromptu opportunity, create one yourself. Practice the exercises below in order to hone your ability to think on the spot.

Random Object Speech

Grab a household object (a spoon, a book, anything.) and set a timer for 2-3 minutes. The goal is to deliver a cohesive, interesting “speech” about the item. This exercise hones your ability to generate ideas and structure thoughts spontaneously.

“Yes, and…” Improv

Grab a friend (the more, the merrier) and play a round of “Yes, and…” improv. One person starts with a statement and the next person builds on it with “Yes, and…” continuing the narrative. This cultivates active listening skills and spontaneous storytelling, which is excellent for building public speaking confidence.

Public Speaking Games: Interactive Activities to Sharpen Your Skills

Who says practicing public speaking can’t be enjoyable? Games provide a light-hearted platform to try different public speaking activities. They allow you to hone your presentation skills in a fun, collaborative setting. Plus, practicing in a group fosters teamwork and allows you to observe and learn from one another’s speaking styles.

Photo Storytelling

Gather a collection of interesting images (they can be anything from personal photographs to random finds online). Have each participant choose a random image and craft a short story about it, presenting their narrative to the group.

This game hones skills like:

  • Developing narrative flow
  • Using descriptive language to engage listeners
  • Thinking creatively and quickly

“Sell It” Challenge

In the “Sell It” Challenge, each person picks a random object (like a pen or stapler) and attempts to “sell” it to the group. This is done by highlighting its extraordinary (or not-so-extraordinary) qualities with humor and enthusiasm. It encourages creativity in speech because the success of their pitch hinges solely on their public speaking ability and persuasive prowess.

This public speaking game is ideal for encouraging:

  • Practicing persuasion techniques
  • Promoting quick thinking
  • Adding humor into presentations

Analyzing the Masters: Learning from the Best Public Speakers

One of the best ways to enhance your public speaking skill is by studying successful public speakers. Watch those who deliver inspiring messages at events like TED Talks . By observing different elements of these popular speeches and implementing similar techniques, you’ll enhance your speaking skills.

Here are some ways you can study public speakers to advance your public speaking practice:

  • Observe Delivery Techniques: Pay attention to the speaker’s voice modulation, pace, and strategic pauses. Also notice body language like their hand gestures, eye contact, and movements on stage. Finally, analyze the structure, storytelling elements, humor (if used), and closing remarks. The more talks you analyze, the more you’ll start noticing patterns, techniques, and effective approaches.
  • Imitate Their Style: Once you’ve made a list of the elements that impressed you, try to integrate these public speaking tips into your own speaking. Practice those pauses, the impactful closing, or adapt their storytelling approach. Emulating these masters is not about copying, but more about studying effective techniques.

Additional Tips and Tricks for Powerful Presentations

Mastering any new skill requires practice and the right approach. Whether preparing for a presentation at work, an important interview, or a talk at an upcoming industry event, there are tons of public speaking exercises to choose from. Choose methods that are effective for your personal needs and practice consistently. Finally, don’t forget to seek out feedback so that you continue to build on improvements.

Here are some tips for delivering great presentations:

  • Practice Makes Perfect: Embrace opportunities to present, whether it’s to friends and family, your team at work, or at local speaking clubs. The more experience you have, the less daunting the stage becomes. Public speaking is just like any skill. The more you practice talking, the easier it becomes.
  • Know Your Audience: Tailoring your message to resonate with your target demographic is crucial for audience engagement. Understanding the group’s interests, demographics, and why they are listening can help make your presentation even more impactful.
  • Storytelling Captivates: Weaving narratives throughout your presentation will help listeners connect more deeply with your message. It will also make it more engaging and memorable. People connect to emotions, vulnerability, and a touch of relatability, so put in the work to find your own story, then practice telling it.

Let’s get into it.

Behind every successful presentation, there was carefully crafted planning that went into it beforehand. To ensure that you’ll have a powerful presentation, you need to consider your message.

The very first step to any good presentation is to define its purpose. This goes on in the very beginning during the planning process where you consider your message.

Your presentation’s end goal can be any of the following:

  • To entertain
  • To persuade

Your presentation’s end goal might even be a combination of the four purposes above. Consider the fact that you may need to inform buyers of your product and what problem it solves for them, but you also need to persuade them into buying it.

This is where engaging storytelling and proper visual aids will come into play to help you achieve your goal, and will either make or break your presentation.

Once you pinpoint the purpose of your presentation, you can then begin to work on the subject matter and your audience journey map.

An audience journey map is a visual representation of all the steps you need to take your audience members through, from first to last and everything in between, to achieve the goal of your presentation.

There are a few steps to creating your audience journey map.

online course presentation skills

First, you need to start your explanation at a low point — the current state of an issue. Maybe there’s a problem that you are able to solve. Describe the current situation before you lay out the undertaking ahead.

Once you lay out the problem, you can then start showing your audience the process of solving this problem. To not overwhelm your crowd, give them an actionable roadmap to follow.

With great verbal communication skills, you can tell them how you plan to take the first step.

This is many times the hardest part of the presentation, but once you have the foundation for your first step, you can easily lay out the next stepping stones and take them to your end goal with ease.

Creating an audience journey map will be a major success factor in a compelling presentation and needs to be done before writing and creating your slides.

Having a clear audience journey map will also help ensure you take your audience on a smooth journey with all your main points in line and achieve your end goal with no bumps in the road.

When giving a presentation, make sure that you keep it short, sweet and as informationally-condensed as possible. All of your slides should be easy to digest and understandable at a glance.

Let's take a look at an example. The slide below is part of Visme's simple presentation theme , which is designed to have maximum impact with minimal text.

online course presentation skills

You can customize this slide and others like it in Visme's presentation software . Or, you can apply the same concept of minimalism to any other presentation tool, such as PowerPoint.

To make sure that you stay on topic and won’t overwhelm your crowd with too much information, you need to have a plan. When you have a solid plan to go by, you won’t go off track and begin rambling about things unrelated to your presentation.

Another practical way you can stay on topic and not overwhelm your audience with too much information is to have your main points written in bold somewhere on your slides.

Here's another example of a Visme slide template that does that well:

online course presentation skills

As you can see above, you don’t need to write out all the information surrounding the main points, as this will cause your audience too much confusion.

An experienced presenter will be able to quickly glance over at their own presentation slides, see the main points and continue on with their presentation, engaging their audience without going off course.

This, of course, comes with a lot of rehearsing out loud, which we will cover more in tip number six .

Another great way to keep your presentation short is to set a specific time for asking questions.

By reserving a few minutes during your presentation for your audience to ask questions, you can present your main points and achieve your goals, without going into too much detail.

Your audience can then ask for clarity on anything that interests them and you can answer their questions in however much detail you need.

Picture this: you’re gathered around the conference table with all your colleagues early Monday morning and your manager pulls up a lifeless, colorless, text-filled Microsoft PowerPoint presentation.

You’re trying your best to pay attention and understand what he’s trying to convey, but staring deep into your coffee cup seems much more interesting at this point.

Sound familiar?

This is why it’s so crucial to understand how your presentation design will affect the outcome.

By having a messy and overloaded presentation, you’ll lose your audience almost immediately. On the flip side, if it’s so mundane and boring, you will also lose their attention.

One design presentation tip that we suggest you implement is to make sure you don’t overcrowd your slides with too much text.

This is a risky thing to do because the moment you flip to the next slide, your audience’s attention goes from what you’re saying, to your slide.

They’ll begin to read everything presented on the slide and completely tune you out. This is why a minimal text approach with a maximum of 2-3 different yet complementary fonts on your slides will be ideal, like in the example below.

online course presentation skills

You can use visual aids like images, animated graphic design elements, videos and more to convey the same message that boring text would.

It’s not everyone’s cup of tea to design a presentation from scratch, and that’s why it can be incredibly helpful to use a tool that offers presentation templates to help you get started.

Visme has hundreds of handcrafted presentation templates for public speakers to use for any occasion. Each presentation template is fully customizable and you’ll be able to add your branded content to your slides to make it your own.

Presenting your data can be an incredibly tricky and difficult task.

Instead of adding a bunch of tables and numbers to your slides, try switching things up by using charts, graphs and other data visualization types .

When creating a chart for your presentation, you need to be mindful of several things.

First, you need to choose the right chart to begin with. Not every type of graph is suitable for all data sets. The chart you choose will depend on the nature of your data and your unique purpose of using that chart.

Here's an infographic to help you understand what type of chart to use depending on your unique needs and nature of data.

online course presentation skills

For example, if you're drawing a comparison between two or more items, a bar graph might be suitable. But if you're breaking down composition, a pie chart might be a better idea.

Also, make sure that you can fit all of your information into a chart without overcrowding the visual and also have your audience understand that information at a glance, like in the example below.

online course presentation skills

Other data visualization tips to keep in mind include choosing a pleasant, cohesive color scheme, sticking to max 2-3 fonts, incorporating a legend, and keeping your data as simple as possible.

Learn more about data visualization best practices to help you create engaging charts for your presentations and reports.

If you're using Visme, you can also import your data directly from Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, Survey Monkey, Google Analytics and more.

Practice, practice and practice again.

Some would argue that writing up and designing a presentation from scratch is the easiest part. Delivering the presentation in a way that it engages your audience — that's the tricky part.

When it comes to public speaking, it’s only natural that one would get a little nervous and stumble upon their words.

That’s why practicing your public speaking skills in front of others will be vital to how well you present and connect with your crowd during your actual presentation.

It’s one thing to practice in front of the mirror, but it’s something completely different when people are waiting for you to deliver information that will improve their business or life.

So gather up some friends, family members or even your pets, and present your presentation from start to finish as many times as you need.

By presenting your slides out loud, you might even catch some mistakes in your presentation or find you need to add in some missing information.

By shaking your attendee’s hand before a meeting, you’ll begin to make connections and become more approachable and likable by your audience.

Meeting your audience will help break the ice and make them more likely to listen to what you have to say. They will also feel more comfortable asking you questions later, which will increase the value they get out of your presentation.

Plus, you’ll also feel more relaxed speaking to your audience if you've met them already. When you can put a name to a face, you’ll automatically feel a sense of comfort when you make eye contact with them while presenting.

Even the most famous movie stars and popular public speakers will still get nervous before a public presentation.

It’s human nature to get butterflies and perspire a bit before having tons of eyes on you, critiquing every word you have to say.

So, if you’re feeling nervous before a presentation, instead of emotionally shutting down, take that nervous energy and transform it into enthusiastic energy.

Before getting up on stage, listen to your favorite hype music, maybe have a coffee (if it won’t make you jittery) or get a pep talk from a friend.

By being confident and using your enthusiasm to your advantage, you’ll have your crowd on the edge of their seats, completely engaged, following every word you say.

Enthusiastic presentations will much better received by listeners, rather than monotone informational presentations. So, as important as your presentation design is, the way you present it will determine a big part of the outcome.

According to Allan Pease , an Honorary Professor of Psychology at ULIM International University, you can convince almost anyone to do anything for you if you use proper body language.

He has an entire Ted Talk dedicated to the subject, which you can watch below.

The proper use of hand gestures, a power stance, a confident smile and an authoritative yet kind voice are all techniques that you can leverage to get your crowd listening to and agreeing with what you’re saying.

According to Allan Pease, when using hand gestures, you’ll want to make sure that you’re using open palm gestures. This makes you look like a great leader that is right there with the team, ready to lead and take charge.

By using open palm gestures, people will automatically be inclined to listen to you.

The moment you turn your hand over and start using your pointer finger, you will lose your audience. They won’t accept any information from you and they will believe you have an authoritative and hostile attitude.

Body language is everything, so make sure to use open hand gestures, smile, take a deep breath and believe that you’re not nervous, even if you are.

As soon as you believe that you’re not nervous, your brain and body will follow suit and you’ll feel more confident on stage with your presentation, which will make your audience trust you more.

We’re convinced that with the right tone of voice and allowing your personality to shine through, you can take any boring presentation, and turn it into an entertaining and engaging one for your audience.

While it is good to meet your audience where they are, it’s never good to fake your personality for the sake of a presentation.

Everyone can tell when someone isn’t genuine, and if you’re trying to suppress your personality, you’re only hurting yourself and your presentation by doing so, as what you’re saying can then begin to sound disingenuous.

So, don’t be afraid to use your personality to your advantage. Let a joke out and entertain your audience. By making your audience laugh, you’ll have them more in tune with what you’re saying.

Chances are if you’re giving a business presentation, many of your peers will be there and they'd want you to let your personality show. So, be yourself and use that to your advantage!

Finally, our best tip that we can offer you in all areas of life is to never stop learning.

The only way to improve is to continue learning and practicing. That’s why we recommend you take presentation courses that will help improve your communication skills and presentation skills.

You can brush up on your presentation, communication and public speaking tips by taking online courses on Udemy or Coursera . Look for specific courses on storytelling, body language and more to focus on your problem areas.

Or, if you're looking for a free course that packs all the good stuff at zero cost, our team at Visme has put together an incredible presentation course that will help you smash your next presentation!

Frequently asked questions.

Alison has a wide variety of free presentation skills diploma and certificate courses. Among our top 3 most popular courses are:

  • How to Become a Professional Speaker

Sought-after motivational, business and other speakers can command large speaking fees for addressing organisations and companies. Even if that is not your goal, this course breaks down how to link messages in your speech, why it is important to be passionate about your message and what ‘performance’ skills you need.

  • Workplace Communication

Many jobs require you to give presentations to colleagues, juniors, management, clients and suppliers. You may even have to give a pitch presentation to win new business. This course is invaluable and breaks it all down for you.

  • Essential Career Soft Skills

‘Soft skills’ are things like listening, speaking and knowing how to navigate the social or human side of your business. Even if you are involved in a very technical field like surgery, IT or finance, you will still have to communicate with bosses, clients, colleagues and even patients. This course shows you how to do that easily and effectively, even if you are shy or anxious.

Humans have complex ways of communicating. The better your presentation skills, the more you can persuade others to:

Follow you if you’re a leader

Buy from you if you’re a seller

Sell to you if you’re a buyer

Listen to you if you’re a law enforcer

Learn from you if you’re a teacher

Use your business or service rather than someone else’s

Having good presentation skills makes it easier to win projects, manage others and get investments in your startup. They are also useful in your private life if you have to give speeches at weddings, funerals, engagements, life celebrations and other occasions.

So many careers have an element of presentation. Actors have to talk about their movies, politicians have to talk about their campaigns and even business people have to talk about their offerings. No matter what your job - teacher, journalist, influencer, coach or entrepreneur - improving your presentation skills is worth it.

Remember, all Alison courses:

Have no monthly subscription fees

Have no registration fees

Have no enrollment fees

Have no limit on how many courses you can do

Have no time limit on completing a course

Once you have passed a course, you have the option of purchasing a certificate for a nominal amount. This is super-useful to add to your CV or resume but not compulsory at all. The choice is yours!
