The essential oil manufacturing business is growing at a rapid pace. With the increasing popularity of essential oils, more and more people are looking to start their essential oil businesses. If you’re thinking of starting your own essential oil business, there are a few things you need to know. This blog post will cover the basics of starting an essential oil business, including the licensing requirements and costs associated with starting such a business. We will also touch on the potential profits that can be made in the essential oil industry.
Essential oil manufacturing business plan
It is a concentrated, volatile, aromatic liquid obtained from certain plants’ fruits, flowers, seeds, leaves, bark, or roots. Essential oils are used in various applications, including aromatherapy, cosmetics, and natural ingredients in household cleaning and personal care. Two main methods of extracting essential oils are steam distillation and cold pressing. Steam distillation is the most common method to extract essential oils from plant materials. Cold pressing is typically used to extract essential oils.
Essential oils are composed of various chemicals that give each oil its unique aroma and therapeutic properties. The main categories of chemicals found in essential oils are terpenes and esters. Terpenes are the largest group of chemicals found in essential oils and are responsible for most of an oil’s aroma. Esters are a smaller group of molecules that contribute to an oil’s fragrance and can also have therapeutic effects.
Two primary methods of deriving essential oils are steam distillation and cold pressing. Steam distillation is the most common essential oil production method. This process involves using steam to break down the plant material and release the oils. The plant material is placed in a still and heated by boiling water.

The steam rises and carries with it the oils from the plant material. The vapors are then condensed and collected, and the essential oils are separated from the water. Cold pressing is another common method for extracting essential oils, but it is typically only used for citrus fruits. This process involves mechanically pressing the fruit to release the oils. The essential oils are then separated from the pulp and seeds.
If you want to set up an essential oil business, there are some tips you need to consider before getting started. The most important factors are the cost of setting up your business. To get started, you will want to obtain a license from the government. The cost of this license will vary depending on the country you are in and the business type you want to set up. For example, in the United States, it can cost anywhere from $100 to $1,000.
Once you have your license, you must purchase equipment for your business. This equipment can range from distillation machines to packaging materials. The cost of this equipment will also vary depending on the size of your operation. Another important cost to consider is the price of raw materials. Essential oils are extracted from plants, so you must source these materials from suppliers.

The price of these materials can change depending on the market and the time of year. Finally, you will need to factor in marketing and advertising costs. Again, these costs can vary depending on how you market your business and which channels you use. Setting up an essential oil business can range from a few hundred to thousand dollars. Therefore, it is important to research and understand all the costs before starting.
The profit potential of an essential oil business is considerable. An essential oil business can be quite profitable with various products to choose from and many ways to market and sell them. Of course, as with any business, the level of success will vary depending on several factors. For example, the operation’s size and scope will impact profits, as will the quality of the products and the effectiveness of the marketing strategy. But with a well-run operation, profits can be significant.
There are several ways to generate revenue from an essential oil business. The most obvious is through the sale of finished products. This can be done through direct sales to customers or through retailers. Another way to generate revenue is through licensing agreements. This is where businesses pay to use your products in their operations. For example, a company might license your lavender oil for perfumes or cosmetics.
This can be a very lucrative arrangement, particularly if you have a unique or high-quality product. Finally, you can also generate revenue by selling raw materials to other manufacturers. This is usually done through wholesalers or distributors. This can be a particularly profitable avenue to explore if you have access to rare or unusual oils.

Firstly, you’ll need to obtain a license from the FDA. Next, you’ll need to purchase the necessary equipment and supplies. Finally, you’ll need to create a marketing plan. The first step in starting your own essential oil business is to obtain a license from the FDA. To do this, you’ll need to submit an application and pay a fee. Once you have your license, you can purchase the necessary equipment and supplies.
You’ll need to purchase some essential oils, bottles, and labels. You can either buy these items in bulk or purchase them individually. Once you have your supplies, you’ll need to create a marketing plan. This will involve creating a website or blog, and social media accounts. You’ll also need to create marketing materials, such as flyers and business cards.
There are different factors important if essential oil production is profitable. First, the cost of raw materials must be taken into account. Essential oils are typically extracted from plants, so the cost of the plants themselves must be considered. The cost of extracting the oils from the plants must be considered.
This includes the equipment needed to extract the oils and the labor required to operate it. The finished product’s price must also be considered when determining profitability. Generally, essential oils are sold by volume, so the price per unit will be a key factor in profitability. Finally, the demand for essential oils must be considered. If there is not a strong demand for essential oils, it may not be worth producing them.
You must obtain a manufacturing license to start an essential oil manufacturing business. The cost of obtaining a manufacturing license can vary depending on the country where you operate your business. In the USA, for example, the cost of a manufacturing license can range from $100 to $1,000.

However, for the exact amount, check with your local licensing agent. The profit margin for an essential oil manufacturing business can be quite high, with some businesses reporting margins of up to 50%. This is because essential oils are used in various products, such as cosmetics, fragrances, and cleaning products.
The first step is to obtain a license from the FDA. The cost of this license will depend on the size of your operation and whether you plan to manufacture for wholesale or retail. You need to purchase equipment and supplies. The cost of these items will vary depending on the type of essential oils you plan to produce.
The third step is to find a market for your products. You can sell your essential oils wholesale to manufacturers or distributors or retail them through online stores or brick-and-mortar retailers. The profit margin for essential oils is typically around 50%. This means that for every $100 in sales, you can expect to make $50 in profit.
No specific license is required to sell essential oils, but other regulations may apply depending on the state where you operate. For example, some states require all food and cosmetics businesses to obtain a license from the Department of Health. In addition to state-level requirements, it is important to check with the county government or local city to see if any business licenses or permits are required.
Even if a business license is not required, registering your business with the appropriate authorities is always a good idea. This will help ensure that you are operating legally and will make it easier to obtain any licenses or permits that may be required in the future.
It largely depends on customer demand and what oils are currently in fashion. However, some essential oils typically popular and sell well include lavender oil, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, and lemon oil. These oils can be used for various purposes, such as aromatherapy, massage therapy, or simply as a pleasant fragrance. Therefore, if you are considering starting an essential oil manufacturing business, it is important to research which oils are in high demand so that you can produce a product that will sell well.
There are many different essential oils, each with unique smells and benefits. However, the most common essential oils include lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, and tea tree. These essential oils can be used for many purposes: relaxation, stress relief, energy boosting, and more.

Essential oils are volatile compounds that evaporate and degrade over time. The time an oil remains, potent depends on several factors, including the type of oil, exposure to oxygen and light, and storage conditions. Most essential oils will last for 1-2 years when stored properly.
If you’re thinking about starting an essential oil manufacturing business, there are some points you need to remember. Firstly, you’ll need to obtain the proper licenses and permits from your local government. Second, you’ll need to factor in raw materials and equipment costs. And lastly, you’ll need to calculate your expected profits. With a little planning and research, you can start your own essential oil manufacturing business and be on your way to success.

In it, you should list:
- The equipment and facilities needed
- Who will be involved in the business (employees, contractors)
- Financial requirements for each step
- Milestones & KPIs

Permits: Business license and registration, food handler's permit if selling edible products, special permits or licenses needed to use certain essential oils or ingredients.
5. Management & Organization of Your Essential Oils Business.
The second part of your essential oils business plan is to develop a management and organization section.
This section will cover all of the following:
- How many employees you need in order to run your essential oils business. This should include the roles they will play (for example, one person may be responsible for managing administrative duties while another might be in charge of customer service).
- The structure of your management team. The higher-ups like yourself should be able to delegate tasks through lower-level managers who are directly responsible for their given department (inventory and sales, etc.).
- How you’re going to make sure that everyone on board is doing their job well. You’ll want check-ins with employees regularly so they have time to ask questions or voice concerns if needed; this also gives you time to offer support where necessary while staying informed on how things are going within individual departments too!
6. Essential Oils Business Startup Expenses & Captial Needed.
This section should be broken down by month and year. If you are still in the planning stage of your business, it may be helpful to estimate how much money will be needed each month until you reach profitability.
Typically, expenses for your business can be broken into a few basic categories:
Startup Costs
Startup costs are typically the first expenses you will incur when beginning an enterprise. These include legal fees, accounting expenses, and other costs associated with getting your business off the ground. The amount of money needed to start a essential oils business varies based on many different variables, but below are a few different types of startup costs for a essential oils business.
Running & Operating Costs
Running costs refer to ongoing expenses related directly with operating your business over time like electricity bills or salaries paid out each month. These types of expenses will vary greatly depending on multiple variables such as location, team size, utility costs, etc.
Marketing & Sales Expenses
You should include any costs associated with marketing and sales, such as advertising and promotions, website design or maintenance. Also, consider any additional expenses that may be incurred if you decide to launch a new product or service line. For example, if your essential oils business has an existing website that needs an upgrade in order to sell more products or services, then this should be listed here.
7. Financial Plan & Projections
A financial plan is an important part of any business plan, as it outlines how the business will generate revenue and profit, and how it will use that profit to grow and sustain itself. To devise a financial plan for your essential oils business, you will need to consider a number of factors, including your start-up costs, operating costs, projected revenue, and expenses.
Here are some steps you can follow to devise a financial plan for your essential oils business plan:
- Determine your start-up costs: This will include the cost of purchasing or leasing the space where you will operate your business, as well as the cost of buying or leasing any equipment or supplies that you need to start the business.
- Estimate your operating costs: Operating costs will include utilities, such as electricity, gas, and water, as well as labor costs for employees, if any, and the cost of purchasing any materials or supplies that you will need to run your business.
- Project your revenue: To project your revenue, you will need to consider the number of customers you expect to have and the average amount they will spend on each visit. You can use this information to estimate how much money you will make from selling your products or services.
- Estimate your expenses: In addition to your operating costs, you will need to consider other expenses, such as insurance, marketing, and maintenance. You will also need to set aside money for taxes and other fees.
- Create a budget: Once you have estimated your start-up costs, operating costs, revenue, and expenses, you can use this information to create a budget for your business. This will help you to see how much money you will need to start the business, and how much profit you can expect to make.
- Develop a plan for using your profit: Finally, you will need to decide how you will use your profit to grow and sustain your business. This might include investing in new equipment, expanding the business, or saving for a rainy day.

Now that you know what’s involved in starting an essential oils business, it’s a good idea to hone your concept in preparation to enter a competitive market.
Market research will give you the upper hand, even if you’re already positive that you have a perfect product or service. Conducting market research is important, because it can help you understand your customers better, who your competitors are, and your business landscape.
Why? Identify an opportunity
Research essential oils businesses in your area and online to examine their products, price points, and what sells best. You’re looking for a market gap to fill. For instance, maybe the local market is missing a business that makes pure essential oils directly extracted from the plants, or from ethereal oils.
You might consider targeting a niche market by specializing in a certain aspect of your industry, such as essential oils for aromatherapy, lavender oils, or lemon oils.
This could jumpstart your word-of-mouth marketing and attract clients right away.
What? Determine your products and offerings
You’ll just need to determine what oils you want to develop and create a product list. At some point, you could open a salon that offers aromatherapy treatments.
How much should you charge for essential oils?
The average price for a 15 ml. bottle is about $15. After your cost of making and packaging the oils, you should aim for a profit margin of about 50% or more.
Once you know your costs, you can use this Step By Step profit margin calculator to determine your mark-up and final price points. Remember, the prices you use at launch should be subject to change if warranted by the market.
Who? Identify your target market
Your target market will be broad, but it may tend to be a younger demographic you can find on TikTok or Instagram.
Where? Choose your business premises
In the early stages, you may want to run your business from home to keep costs low. But as your business grows, you’ll likely need to hire workers for various roles and may need to rent out a production facility. You can find commercial space to rent in your area on sites such as Craigslist , Crexi , and Instant Offices .
When choosing a commercial space, you may want to follow these rules of thumb:
- Central location accessible via public transport
- Ventilated and spacious, with good natural light
- Flexible lease that can be extended as your business grows
- Ready-to-use space with no major renovations or repairs needed
Step 3: Brainstorm an Essential Oils Business Name
Here are some ideas for brainstorming your business name:
- Short, unique, and catchy names tend to stand out
- Names that are easy to say and spell tend to do better
- Name should be relevant to your product or service offerings
- Ask around — family, friends, colleagues, social media — for suggestions
- Including keywords, such as “essential oils” or “aromatherapy oils”, boosts SEO
- Name should allow for expansion, for ex: “The Essence Room” over “Calming Lavender Oils” or “Eucalyptus Essentials”
- A location-based name can help establish a strong connection with your local community and help with the SEO but might hinder future expansion
Once you’ve got a list of potential names, visit the website of the US Patent and Trademark Office to make sure they are available for registration and check the availability of related domain names using our Domain Name Search tool. Using “.com” or “.org” sharply increases credibility, so it’s best to focus on these.
Find a Domain

Finally, make your choice among the names that pass this screening and go ahead with domain registration and social media account creation. Your business name is one of the key differentiators that sets your business apart. Once you pick your company name, and start with the branding, it is hard to change the business name. Therefore, it’s important to carefully consider your choice before you start a business entity.
Step 4: Create an Essential Oils Extraction Business Plan
Here are the key components of a business plan:
- Executive Summary: Highlight your essential oils business’s mission to provide a diverse range of high-quality, natural essential oils and related products for health, wellness, and aromatherapy.
- Business Overview: Describe your business’s focus on sourcing, producing, and selling essential oils, including pure oils, blends, and aromatherapy accessories.
- Product and Services: Detail the range of products offered, such as single-note essential oils, therapeutic blends, diffusers, and skincare products infused with essential oils.
- Market Analysis: Assess the demand for essential oils, identifying target markets like health-conscious consumers, wellness practitioners, or aromatherapy enthusiasts.
- Competitive Analysis: Compare your products and branding to other essential oil companies, focusing on your unique selling points like organic sourcing, custom blends, or packaging.
- Sales and Marketing: Outline your strategy for reaching customers, including e-commerce, wholesale distribution, or partnerships with wellness centers.
- Management Team: Highlight the experience and qualifications of your team, particularly in areas like herbalism, product development, and business management.
- Operations Plan: Describe the process of essential oil production, from sourcing raw materials to bottling and distribution.
- Financial Plan: Provide an overview of financial aspects, including startup costs, pricing strategy, and revenue projections.
- Appendix: Include supplementary documents such as product catalogs, supplier agreements, or detailed market research to support your business plan.
If you’ve never created a business plan, it can be an intimidating task. You might consider hiring a business plan specialist to create a top-notch business plan for you.
Step 5: Register Your Business
Registering your business is an absolutely crucial step — it’s the prerequisite to paying taxes, raising capital, opening a bank account, and other guideposts on the road to getting a business up and running.
Plus, registration is exciting because it makes the entire process official. Once it’s complete, you’ll have your own business!
Choose where to register your company
Your business location is important because it can affect taxes, legal requirements, and revenue. Most people will register their business in the state where they live, but if you’re planning to expand, you might consider looking elsewhere, as some states could offer real advantages when it comes to essential oils businesses.
If you’re willing to move, you could really maximize your business! Keep in mind, it’s relatively easy to transfer your business to another state.
Choose your business structure
Business entities come in several varieties, each with its pros and cons. The legal structure you choose for your essential oils business will shape your taxes, personal liability, and business registration requirements, so choose wisely.
Here are the main options:
- Sole Proprietorship – The most common structure for small businesses makes no legal distinction between company and owner. All income goes to the owner, who’s also liable for any debts, losses, or liabilities incurred by the business. The owner pays taxes on business income on his or her personal tax return.
- General Partnership – Similar to a sole proprietorship, but for two or more people. Again, owners keep the profits and are liable for losses. The partners pay taxes on their share of business income on their personal tax returns.
- Limited Liability Company (LLC) – Combines the characteristics of corporations with those of sole proprietorships or partnerships. Again, the owners are not personally liable for debts.
- C Corp – Under this structure, the business is a distinct legal entity and the owner or owners are not personally liable for its debts. Owners take profits through shareholder dividends, rather than directly. The corporation pays taxes, and owners pay taxes on their dividends, which is sometimes referred to as double taxation.
- S Corp – An S-Corporation refers to the tax classification of the business but is not a business entity. An S-Corp can be either a corporation or an LLC , which just need to elect to be an S-Corp for tax status. In an S-Corp, income is passed through directly to shareholders, who pay taxes on their share of business income on their personal tax returns.
We recommend that new business owners choose LLC as it offers liability protection and pass-through taxation while being simpler to form than a corporation. You can form an LLC in as little as five minutes using an online LLC formation service. They will check that your business name is available before filing, submit your articles of organization , and answer any questions you might have.

Step 6: Register for Taxes
The final step before you’re able to pay taxes is getting an Employer Identification Number , or EIN. You can file for your EIN online or by mail or fax: visit the IRS website to learn more. Keep in mind, if you’ve chosen to be a sole proprietorship you can simply use your social security number as your EIN.
Once you have your EIN, you’ll need to choose your tax year. Financially speaking, your business will operate in a calendar year (January–December) or a fiscal year, a 12-month period that can start in any month. This will determine your tax cycle, while your business structure will determine which taxes you’ll pay.
The IRS website also offers a tax-payers checklist , and taxes can be filed online.
It is important to consult an accountant or other professional to help you with your taxes to ensure you’re completing them correctly.
Step 7: Fund your Business
Securing financing is your next step and there are plenty of ways to raise capital:
- Bank loans: This is the most common method but getting approved requires a rock-solid business plan and strong credit history.
- SBA-guaranteed loans: The Small Business Administration can act as guarantor, helping gain that elusive bank approval via an SBA-guaranteed loan .
- Government grants: A handful of financial assistance programs help fund entrepreneurs. Visit Grants.gov to learn which might work for you.
- Friends and Family: Reach out to friends and family to provide a business loan or investment in your concept. It’s a good idea to have legal advice when doing so because SEC regulations apply.
- Crowdfunding: Websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo offer an increasingly popular low-risk option, in which donors fund your vision. Entrepreneurial crowdfunding sites like Fundable and WeFunder enable multiple investors to fund your business.
- Personal: Self-fund your business via your savings or the sale of property or other assets.
Bank and SBA loans are probably the best option, other than friends and family, for funding an essential oils business. You might also try crowdfunding if you have an innovative concept.
Step 8: Apply for Essential Oils Business Licenses and Permits
Starting an essential oils business requires obtaining a number of licenses and permits from local, state, and federal governments.
Federal regulations, licenses, and permits associated with starting your business include doing business as (DBA), health licenses and permits from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration ( OSHA ), trademarks, copyrights, patents, and other intellectual properties, as well as industry-specific licenses and permits.
You may also need state-level and local county or city-based licenses and permits. The license requirements and how to obtain them vary, so check the websites of your state, city, and county governments or contact the appropriate person to learn more.
You could also check this SBA guide for your state’s requirements, but we recommend using MyCorporation’s Business License Compliance Package . They will research the exact forms you need for your business and state and provide them to ensure you’re fully compliant.
This is not a step to be taken lightly, as failing to comply with legal requirements can result in hefty penalties.
If you feel overwhelmed by this step or don’t know how to begin, it might be a good idea to hire a professional to help you check all the legal boxes.
Step 9: Open a Business Bank Account
Before you start making money, you’ll need a place to keep it, and that requires opening a bank account .
Keeping your business finances separate from your personal account makes it easy to file taxes and track your company’s income, so it’s worth doing even if you’re running your essential oils business as a sole proprietorship. Opening a business bank account is quite simple, and similar to opening a personal one. Most major banks offer accounts tailored for businesses — just inquire at your preferred bank to learn about their rates and features.
Banks vary in terms of offerings, so it’s a good idea to examine your options and select the best plan for you. Once you choose your bank, bring in your EIN (or Social Security Number if you decide on a sole proprietorship), articles of incorporation, and other legal documents and open your new account.
Step 10: Get Business Insurance
Business insurance is an area that often gets overlooked yet it can be vital to your success as an entrepreneur. Insurance protects you from unexpected events that can have a devastating impact on your business.
Here are some types of insurance to consider:
- General liability: The most comprehensive type of insurance, acting as a catch-all for many business elements that require coverage. If you get just one kind of insurance, this is it. It even protects against bodily injury and property damage.
- Business Property: Provides coverage for your equipment and supplies.
- Equipment Breakdown Insurance: Covers the cost of replacing or repairing equipment that has broken due to mechanical issues.
- Worker’s compensation: Provides compensation to employees injured on the job.
- Property: Covers your physical space, whether it is a cart, storefront, or office.
- Commercial auto: Protection for your company-owned vehicle.
- Professional liability: Protects against claims from a client who says they suffered a loss due to an error or omission in your work.
- Business owner’s policy (BOP): This is an insurance plan that acts as an all-in-one insurance policy, a combination of the above insurance types.
Step 11: Prepare to Launch
As opening day nears, prepare for launch by reviewing and improving some key elements of your business.
Essential software and tools
Being an entrepreneur often means wearing many hats, from marketing to sales to accounting, which can be overwhelming. Fortunately, many websites and digital tools are available to help simplify many business tasks.
You may want to use industry-specific software, such as LS Retail , Vend , or Retail Pro , to manage purchasing, inventory, and invoicing.
- Popular web-based accounting programs for smaller businesses include Quickbooks , Freshbooks , and Xero .
- If you’re unfamiliar with basic accounting, you may want to hire a professional, especially as you begin. The consequences for filing incorrect tax documents can be harsh, so accuracy is crucial.
Develop your website
Website development is crucial because your site is your online presence and needs to convince prospective clients of your expertise and professionalism.
You can create your own website using services like WordPress , Wix , or Squarespace . This route is very affordable, but figuring out how to build a website can be time-consuming. If you lack tech-savvy, you can hire a web designer or developer to create a custom website for your business.
They are unlikely to find your website, however, unless you follow Search Engine Optimization ( SEO ) practices. These are steps that help pages rank higher in the results of top search engines like Google.
Here are some powerful marketing strategies for your future business:
- Educational Content on Social Media: Leverage platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest to share informative content about the benefits and uses of essential oils, creating engaging posts, infographics, and short videos to educate and attract potential customers.
- Partnerships with Wellness Influencers: Collaborate with wellness and lifestyle influencers who align with your brand values to reach a broader audience, gain credibility, and tap into their followers’ interest in holistic living.
- Create Limited-Time Bundles: Increase sales by offering limited-time bundles or exclusive packages, encouraging customers to try a variety of essential oils and discover their unique benefits at a discounted price.
- Host Virtual Workshops and Classes: Organize online workshops or classes where participants can learn about essential oils, their applications, and the overall wellness benefits, fostering a sense of community and promoting your products.
- Customer Testimonials and Success Stories: Share genuine customer testimonials and success stories through various channels, including social media, your product packaging, or email newsletters, to build trust and showcase the positive impact of your essential oils.
- Seasonal Promotions and Gift Sets: Create seasonal promotions and special edition gift sets, capitalizing on holidays and events to drive sales and offer customers unique, themed essential oil collections.
- Local Farmers’ Markets and Events: Participate in local farmers’ markets, health fairs, or community events to connect with customers face-to-face, allowing them to experience your essential oils firsthand and ask questions.
- Subscription Box Services: Introduce a subscription box service that delivers a curated selection of essential oils to customers regularly, offering convenience and a continuous source of revenue while showcasing the diversity of your product line.
- Referral Programs: Implement a referral program where existing customers can earn discounts or exclusive products for referring friends and family, creating a word-of-mouth marketing strategy that leverages personal recommendations.
- Collaborate with Spa and Wellness Businesses: Partner with local spas, yoga studios, or wellness centers to have your essential oils featured in their services or sold in their retail spaces, expanding your reach within the wellness community.
Focus on USPs
Unique selling propositions, or USPs, are the characteristics of a product or service that sets it apart from the competition. Customers today are inundated with buying options, so you’ll have a real advantage if they are able to quickly grasp how your essential oils business meets their needs or wishes. It’s wise to do all you can to ensure your USPs stand out on your website and in your marketing and promotional materials, stimulating buyer desire.
Global pizza chain Domino’s is renowned for its USP: “Hot pizza in 30 minutes or less, guaranteed.” Signature USPs for your essential oils business could be:
- Pure essential oils for your overall wellness
- Lavender oils made only with plant extractions
- Reduce your stress and anxiety with soothing essential oils
You may not like to network or use personal connections for business gain. But your personal and professional networks likely offer considerable untapped business potential. Maybe that Facebook friend you met in college is now running an essential oils business, or a LinkedIn contact of yours is connected to dozens of potential clients. Maybe your cousin or neighbor has been working in essential oils for years and can offer invaluable insight and industry connections.
The possibilities are endless, so it’s a good idea to review your personal and professional networks and reach out to those with possible links to or interest in essential oils. You’ll probably generate new customers or find companies with which you could establish a partnership.
Step 12: Build Your Team
If you’re starting out small from a home office, you may not need any employees. But as your business grows, you will likely need workers to fill various roles. Potential positions for an essential oils business include:
- Essential oils Makers – help make essential oils
- General Manager – ordering, inventory management, accounting
- Marketing Lead – SEO strategies, social media
At some point, you may need to hire all of these positions or simply a few, depending on the size and needs of your business. You might also hire multiple workers for a single role or a single worker for multiple roles, again depending on need.
Free-of-charge methods to recruit employees include posting ads on popular platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, or Jobs.com. You might also consider a premium recruitment option, such as advertising on Indeed , Glassdoor , or ZipRecruiter . Further, if you have the resources, you could consider hiring a recruitment agency to help you find talent.
Step 13: Run an Essential Oils Business – Start Making Money!
Now is the perfect time to start an essential oils business and get in on a market that is poised to double in the coming years. You can start from home for a small investment and make a good living while helping people improve their wellness. It’s an opportunity that can offer many rewards to you, as a business owner.

Step 3: Deciding a Variety of Essential Oil to Manufacture
Essential oils are obtained from a variety of plants and there are different techniques involved in extracting process.
But the question is, you need to know what variety of essential oil can be profitable for you.
For example, essential oils like lavender, tea tree, and peppermint already have a great demand in the market and it can be competitive to manufacture and sell such types of products. Because several big companies, as well as established brands, already have manufactured products based on these ingredients.
On other hand, there are some lesser-known essential oils like clary sage, ginger, cypress and frankincense oil. Try if you can distill such unique products.
Step 4: Planning and Obtaining Raw Materials
Essential oils are extracted from various parts of the plant such as flowers, stems, leaves, and fruits. A proper strategy is very important on obtaining these raw materials.
There can be several scenarios that can affect your raw material supply such as, natural distastes, riots or sudden increase in prices. To be prepared for such things a proper planning is essential for procuring raw material
Here are some useful tips on how to plan your raw materials appropriately
- Never depend upon a single trader for obtaining raw material, instead tie up with multiple traders for uninterrupted supply
- Make sure you have a dedicated warehouse for storing raw materials
- Always be vigilant on market prices and set aside some amount of money for an unexpected price increase.
- Obtain raw materials from trusted sources that were known to grow organically. Although, getting raw material from an organically grown farm might initially cost you more, they would offer better quality and prevent unnecessary contamination in your end product.
Step 5: Cleaning and Sorting of Raw Materials
Once the raw material reaches your production plant, you need to sort out the material from unwanted waste such as foul plant substances, insects, dust, and debris.
Proper cleaning and sorting of raw materials will ensure your product is free from contamination as well as remains in good condition throughout its shelf-life.
Cleaning and sorting of raw material can be achieved quickly with a combination of manpower and automated equipment.
Step 6: Distillation and Extraction of Essential Oils
The core aspect of the essential oil business lies in the distillation techniques used. There are different varieties of extraction processes suitable for each type of essential oil.
Different types of techniques are involved in the distillation of essential oils
- Water distillation
- Steam distillation
- CO2 extraction
Among them, Water and Steam distillation are the widely used methods
Water Distillation
It is known to be an age-old technique. Where the plant materials are immersed in water. Later, a direct fire is applied beneath the distillery.
Once the temperatures slowly start to raise, the water and the plant material slowly boils and releases vapors.
These vapors travel through the still and reach the condenser which finally cools down the vapor turning into a liquid form.
These condensate will be further passed through the Florentine receiver , which separates the essential oil from the water.
Steam Distillation
Steam distillation is the most widely used essential oil extraction method all over the world. This is simply known as the industry-standard.
In this process, a separate compartment is installed to generate the steam for the extraction process. The generated steam will either be sent directly into the plant material or through the jacket.
As the plant material gets heated up it will slowly release the vapors that travels through the condenser finally producing essential oils.
Most of the industrial steam distillation machines are automated
Which means, they include a PLC to monitor various parameters of the equipment such as temperate, pressure, and humidity.
In addition to that some equipment’s even help to track the data of the batch.
Things to keep in mind while purchasing a distillation unit for essential oil extraction
The distillation unit is the heart of essential oil extraction. You need to pay special attention when purchasing this equipment.
Before you decide to purchase one, ask yourself following questions
- What is the capacity of the machine?
- What type of material is it made up of?
- Does the metal react with your essential oil material?
- How easy is it to clean and sterilize?
- How simple is it to operate?
- Does it offer any automation process?
- How much temperature can it withstand?
- Can the distillation unit be expanded over time, like the addition of valves, sensors, and pipes, etc.,
2) Always research and contact as many Essential oil Distillery equipment manufacturers as possible and ask for a quotation. Get a product brochure if possible.
3) Take a note of each equipment and its specifications and compare them with your requirements.
4) Write down the pros and cons of each equipment that you came across.
5) Try to contact existing customers who already made a purchase from the manufacturer that you are going to purchase.
6) Always go with the manufacturer that can provide better customer support and field technicians as soon as possible.
Step 7: Collection and Post-processing
After the process of distillation, the condensate is extracted through a receiver present at the bottom of the equipment. It is a mixture of water and essential oil. So, we need to separate the essential oils from water.
To do this, we use equipment called Florentine flask which is also known as Essencier . The shape of this flask is specially designed in such a way that it would separate the oils from the water.
There are two common types of Florentine flasks, One, that can separate low-density oil from the water like lavender oils. While, another, that can separate high-density oil from water. For example, cinnamon and clove oil.
Once the essential oil is separated from the hydrosol (water) it is further sent to processing where the oil will be constituted with a carrier oil.
However, some essential oils are not diluted and were packed directly into bottles.
Essential oils are diluted with a carrier oil because they were highly volatile in nature, which means they can easily get evaporated .
How to Effectively Use the Left over Hydrolate
The left-over Hydrolate or Hydrosol is a byproduct of distillation process. It is generally called as floral water.
Although we call it a byproduct it still retains a good amount of essential oil compounds within it. Thus, making it a valuable product in the Essential Oil Business. It is used in making products like face mist, toners, Make-up cleansers, or herbal water.
Benefits of using the Cohobation Technique, In the process of Cohobation, the hydrolate can be recycled for specific intervals back to the vessel. This will help to improve the essential oil yield at the same time increases the concentration levels of the compounds.
In the process of rose essential oil extraction, cohobation plays a major role where, 70% of the rose oil is obtained via this method.
Step 8: Packing and Bottling your essential oil
Once the essential oil is finally extracted, It needs to be packed into bottles. Most of the essential oils are packed into small glass bottles. They were usually stored in 15ml, 20ml, and 25 ml sizes.
However, some essential oils are packed in large sized bottles
Things to keep in mind when you are storing and packing essential oils
Most of the essential oils are packed in a brown colored small bottles, these colored bottles protect essential oil from UV-Rays at the same time they were inexpensive.
Different Types of Bottles Used for Essential oils Storage
Bottles with orifice reducers
This type of bottles contains an orifice. which is a small plastic material that reduces the flow of oil dripping outside when tapped. This ensures the oil is dispensed in small amounts.
Drawback – Bottles with orifice reducers are prone to dispense more liquid when tapped continuously which results in wastage. At the same time they were known to spill out the liquid around the mouth of the bottle.
Bottles with dropper caps
Bottles with dropper caps are more common in cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry. They dispense accurate amount of liquid drops when pressed. Making them most suitable bottles to store essential oils.
Bottles with roll-on cap
Bottles with roller caps are used if your essential oil needs to be directly applied over the skin or any surfaces.
In general, if an essential oil is packed in roller cap bottles then they were mostly diluted with carrier oil to prevent evaporation as well as to prevent any irritation on sensitive parts due to direct contact .
Spray bottles for essential oils
Some essential oils are often stored in spry bottles. These bottles contains a spray unit that releases fine mist when pressed.
If you were deciding to store your essential oil in spray bottles, then it is better to choose the one made up of glass or aluminum rather than plastic. Because plastic tends to react with essential oils.

An essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing explosive compounds from plants. Essential oils are also known as volatile oils, ethereal oils, aetherolea, or simply as the oil of the plant from which they were extracted.
Essential oils are usually extracted by distillation, often by using steam. Other processes include expression, solvent extraction, absolute oil extraction, resin tapping, wax embedding, and cold pressing. They are used in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps and other products, for flavoring food and drink, and for adding scents to incense and household cleaning products.
Essential oils are often used for aromatherapy, a form of substitute medicine in which healing effects are credited to aromatic compounds. Aromatherapy may be useful to induce relaxation, but there is not adequate indication that essential oils can effectively treat any condition.
Research shows that the United States essential oil market size was treasured at USD 3.36 billion in 2015 and it is anticipated to witness a predictable growth rate of 9.0 percent from 2016 to 2024. Major players have established supply partnerships to reduce total production costs. Local manufacturers concentrate on providing advanced varieties of essential oils at reasonable prices and most of the striking essential oils are formed from rare crops and plants which are either difficult to harvest.
Please note that the barriers to entry for the essential oil extraction business are moderate, with the most significant barrier being the ability to raise capital. Capital investments are needed to purchase machinery and equipment and rent facilities.
While the amount of capital needed to enter the industry depends on the scale of operations an entrant is pursuing, even small – scale facilities require significant capital.
Other barriers include securing supply contracts with upstream suppliers of essential oil plants (bark, leaves and resin) such as bitter orange, cinnamon, ginger, lavender, guava, myrrh, pine, bay leaf, frankincense, grapefruit, cedar, jasmine, hyssop, lemon grass and other ingredients used to extract essential oil and other industry goods.

If you’re new to running a business, you might have a ton of questions but we’re here to help! Set up a company to make and sell your own oils, or purchase them wholesale to resell. Create an attractive website and various social media profiles, which will help you promote and grow your business. Sell your essential oils online, at community events, or in stores.
Choose a name for your essential oil company.
- If you live in the U.S. and want to ensure that no other businesses in your area have the same name, search the United States Patent and Trademark Office's database at https://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=tess&state=4805:am2gjg.1.1 .
Apply for a city business license online or by mail.
- For instance, in Boston you will have to submit a completed business certificate form and submit it in person or by mail, along with a $65 filing fee. [3] X Research source
Incorporate your essential oil business.
- For instance, if you get into a contract dispute with a supplier, you will not be personally liable for any fees or charges owed to them by your company.
- It is easiest to file for incorporation through a lawyer, but you can save money by using books and software to do it yourself.
Calculate your start-up costs.
- Registration or license fees
- Legal and professional fees
- Purchase of equipment to make and bottle essential oils
- Advertising and promotion for your company's grand opening
- Starting inventory of essential oils
- Initial fees for your website and e-commerce platform
Work out your recurring operating costs.
- Supplies and stock of essential oils
- Rent and utilities, if you are opening a physical store
- Monthly website and e-commerce store fees
- Salaries, if you are hiring employees
- Contingency costs
Study other essential oil businesses to understand the market.
- For instance, you might notice that the essential oil companies you study do not sell eucalyptus oil, which could be an opportunity to fill a hole in the market.
Observe the advertising techniques of your competitors.
- You can also read online reviews of other essential oil companies to see what customers like and dislike about their products and service.
Purchase an essential oil distiller.
- Distillers range in price, size, and quality, but you will likely pay at least $500 for the equipment.
Set up your distiller in a designated production area.
- If you are producing essential oils at home, a garage or basement would be the best location for this set-up.
Choose what essential oils you will make for your product line.
- For instance, you can choose to focus on relaxing scents like lavender and chamomile.
- Try to find a regular supplier for the main ingredients you use to ensure quality and consistent prices.
Grow your own essential oil ingredients to keep production costs low.
- For instance, mint , lavender, and oregano are easy plants to grow and harvest.
Bottle your essential oils in colored glass bottles.
- Essential oils are usually packaged in small, 5–10 millilitres (0.17–0.34 fl oz) bottles.
Choose how the oil should be dispensed from the bottle.

Starting an Essential Oil Business: Tips and Advice
It’s undisputed that most people live a stressful life and often don’t have time to look after their own health. However, this trend is starting to shift as more people aim to train, look after their health, and reduce the stress in their lives. In that environment, essential oil businesses have offered great solutions to people who wish to combine relaxation with wellness. There are numerous types of essential oils that can help ease the muscles and the mind. Although their retail and wholesale prices are still relatively high, essential oils are used in small quantities and don’t harm the household budget. As the demand for these oils is higher than the supply, it can be profitable to open a business in this field. In this article, we’ll share some essential oils business ideas and shed light on the steps necessary to start such a business.
Key takeaway : Starting an essential oil business can be a profitable endeavor. It doesn’t require large investments and there’s an increase in the demand for these products. Large quantities of essential oils are bought by manufacturers in the cosmetics and wellness industries. Therefore, the majority of retail buyers are not fully aware of the benefits of these products.

You can sell wholesale essential oils to spa centers and retailers or you can sell them via your company’s website with a higher profit margin. If you plan to become a business owner of an essential oil manufacturing business, the initial investment you’ll need is about $10,000. Roughly half of that is the price of a professional distiller.

This will help your marketing and will make you more competitive as your subscription boxes will have more diverse options.
Essential Oils Educational Resources and Workshops
If you’re an essential oils enthusiast, you might enjoy starting an informational website or a YouTube channel related to their production, benefits, and history. This informational content can be used as part of affiliate marketing. Furthermore, the traffic generated by these informational articles, podcasts, or videos can later be used to funnel customers into your own online store. A lot of small direct-to-consumer ecommerce sites have started as blogs first.
Consider organizing online and offline workshops related to the production of essential oil products, their benefits, and how to mix them.
How to Start an Essential Oil Business
As selling and making essential oils does not require a lot of capital investments, it’s a business that can be started fairly quickly and easily. Here are the main steps.
- Create a business plan . It should include financial projections, competition research, marketing strategies, and product research.
- Research the market . That includes not only researching the competition, but also finding suppliers and potential customers. Just like other sectors of the economy, the essential oils market is changing and business owners need to stay on track with the trends.
- Register your business and obtain all necessary licenses and permits . Depending on the type of business you plan to start, there are different regulations you need to follow. Make sure to thoroughly research the matter and consult with a legal expert.
- Fund the business . If you don’t have the necessary funds to start the business, there are multiple ways you can raise them. Loans are the most obvious option. Partnership with friends and family and crowdfunding through platforms such as Kickstarter can be better alternatives.
- Start selling through various platforms . You can sell products not only on your own website but also on other third-party platforms like BlueCart or Amazon.
- Scale and adapt . As trends change, companies need to adapt to the market demand. Make sure to scale your business following the trends in the sector.
Frequently Asked Questions about Essential Oil Businesses
Although essential oils have been known for thousands of years, they are still considered to be an exotic product in the US. Most people don’t know a lot about essential oils and businesses in this field need to focus more on educating customers about the many benefits of these products. Below you’ll find some of the popular questions about essential oil businesses.
Are Essential Oils High-Demand Products ?
Yes, the demand for oils has been rising in recent years and is expected to continue its upward trend . The main drivers of the increasing demand are the extensive use in the cosmetics industry and the increased popularity of aromatherapy. A growing number of people are striving to live healthier. That makes it the perfect time to start an essential oil business.
Is It Profitable to Sell Essential Oils?
On average, essential oil businesses have a profit margin between 30 and 50 percent. That makes this niche market a profitable one. Maximizing revenue can be achieved by combining eCommerce marketing with other selling techniques. Consider gradually expanding the products offered by your essential oils business. Here are a few additional categories that can be sold on essential oils eCommerce stores:
- Scented candles . Aromatherapy and relaxation are often associated with candles. They help achieve a more calm state of mind by combining the comfort of a burning fire and the pleasant odor.
- Spa and wellness products . Clays, exfoliators, and bath salts are just some of the categories that go well with essential oils.
- Carrier oils . Essential oils are extremely concentrated. That’s why, in order to be applied on the skin or hair, they need to be mixed with another product called carrier oil. These carrier oils are usually avocado or coconut oils.
Can You White-Label Essential Oils?
Yes. You can easily start a white-label essential oil business. It can work both ways. If you have started an eCommerce store but don’t have the equipment to make essential oils, you can find suppliers that can produce oils labeled with your brand. You can also offer white-label products if you make and sell essential oils. Various brands and retailers might be interested in selling these high-demand products under their own brand without having to invest in manufacturing equipment.

What To Know Before Starting An Essential Oils Business
Have you thought about starting your own essential oils business? There are some things you need to before starting an essential oil business or signing up for any aromatherapy business opportunities.
No doubt about it, the essential oil industry is growing by leaps and bounds… far more than predicted. I remember reading in 2016 that the essential oil industry was predicted to reach $1 Billion by 2020. My essential oil colleges and I were wide-eyed, surprised in seeing the growth potential. Now that 2020 has come and gone… the global market ended up exceeding $18 Billion! And seeing the significant growth trends continuing, I would suspect that is only the tip of the proverbial ice burg, especially considering all the wellness related benefits of essential oils.
Options for running an essential oils business:
- Online retail sales
- Retail sales in a local shop
- Essential Oil Education
- Affiliate marketing sales
- Network marketing sales
The common theme: sales. To run an essential oils business, you need to build your skills in marketing and closing sales. The only way around this, is to hire people to do it for you.
Before starting an essential oils business, you need to:
- Choose whether or not you want to manage inventory.
- Decide how you want best to serve your customers.
- Choose your essential oil brand (or create your own)
Contrary to many blogging and aromatherapist opinions, there are huge differences in the quality of oils in different oil brands. In fact, there are several dirty little secrets plaguing the essential oil industry. If you're planning to stand out in the crowd of shady business techniques, make sure you're not also falling for deceptive wholesale marketing .
There are a few questions you should be asking about the manufacturing and bottling processes to ensure the oils you'll be selling are actually essential oils. Per FDA and FTC regulations, there are no legal definitions of what “essential oil” is. So all those labels that say “100% Pure Essential Oils” may not be telling the whole truth. Same with all companies promoting their “natural products.”
An essential oil, in legal terms, is a generic description with no regard to what it is or how it is created. Ensuring you are selling true essential oils will go a long way to building a relationship and trust with your customers.
A word of warning, before starting an essential oil business
The US FDA/FTC has several regulations you will need to research if you're in the US. If you're not in the US, your country will have a similar agency with similar rules you'll want to research before you start building content for your marketing plan.
The main thing you absolutely need to know about before entering any type of marketing, whether your own store or marketing for a different manufacturer is: that it is illegal to make any health claims about essential oils and any disease, diagnosis, or medical ailment if you could potentially receive any type of compensation for the essential oil-related sale.
The FDA is slowly prosecuting people for unapproved claims. This is not just related to large companies but also applies to small businesses, blogs, marketers on social media platforms…etc.
Starting Your Own Essential Oil Retail Store
Managing online retail sales through your own website and managing retail sales in your own shop will require inventory management , and possibly shipping as well.
For your first step… you'll definitely need to acquire a business name, LLC, liability insurance, and retail space to store and display your inventory.
Once you've decided what you plan to sell and a location (local and/or utilizing an online store), you'll need to either acquire or grow the plant material to create your own oils and oil-infused personal care products yourself or find oils at a wholesale or manufacturing cost from an essential oil company. Ideally, you'll want to be selling organic essential oils to keep up with the growing consumer demand for higher-quality products. This may also require you to fill your own essential oil bottles too.
Be sure to mark up your prices to cover all your overhead, product procurement, production costs, and marketing expenses, plus leaving you some profit. Yes, organic oils are more expensive, but there are plenty of consumers all over the world who prefer quality over finding a lower price so they can experience greater essential oil benefits.
It is common practice for businesses that are doing well to profit only 2-5% of their total sales. It is wise to be prepared for that and ensure your profit margin leaves you space for paying yourself and covering your overhead expenses including future employees. **This statistic comes straight from classes I took while earning my business degree
You can easily increase this by purchasing straight from manufacturers and cutting out the middle wholesale suppliers/brokers. For example, the essential oils company I endorse across all my websites provides a 40% discount for resellers on all of their products… which is a much more of a discount than purchasing at wholesale for 24% off the retail price.
You will at some point want (or need) to employ a reliable team to help drive new customers to you and your sales team and provide customer service.
If you choose not to hire a team, you'll need to become skilled at marketing, closing sales, and customer service. Though when you're able to afford it, I highly recommend hiring a team to help you so you can avoid burnout and keep your stress lower.
Starting Your Own Essential Oil Education Business
A great way to set up a business, or add to an existing business, is to create an education portal for people to come to you to learn about essential oils.
While you don't need a degree or license to sell information, it is beneficial to be a perpetual student attending regular training, classes, or seminars throughout the essential oil industry. This aids in your process to learn and sharing.
Of course, if you're selling courses, it makes sense to include some sort of an affiliate program where you reward marketers for helping you acquire students. It also makes sense to add additional streams of income by joining some sort of an affiliate program and link to high-quality products that will enhance and support your students through their learning.
Courses about essential oils can be held online or in person.
Online courses can be live, or automated. When getting started, I recommend live courses that then move to be evergreen (automated) courses.
In-person courses can look like seminars, informal classes, or community events. You can also record in-person courses or seminars and sell them online through an automated course system in a learning portal on your store's website as well.
Creating Your Essential Oils Business Through Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing makes creating an online business centered around essential oils easier than ever. Simply link your unique link to an essential oil product as you build a following and share information about it. This does work best if you have a website, but with the prevalence of social media and email autoresponders, it isn't completely necessary.
Many manufacturers use their marketing budget to pay people skilled in internet or social marketing to advertise their essential oils and oil-infused products. This is very common among bloggers, social media influencers, and email marketers.
Affiliate marketing basically means when you advertise someone else's products, you are paid a commission on what shoppers purchase through using your unique affiliate links.
This is probably the easiest way of making money. When you write about something in either a blog post, email, social media post, email, or website, you can link to products that correspond with what you're talking about, and make a small commission from any subsequent sales.
When done right, affiliate marketing can even produce an endless stream of “passive income.” Passive income is where people receive income from an “evergreen” source even after they stop actively promoting it. With a little work upfront, you can receive income each month without actively working on that exact project. As a blogger, this is one of several tools I use for achieving enough income to not have to work a traditional job and afford to homeschool my kids.
This is a much more efficient business model than running TV and newspaper ads, or even running social media ads because the company only pays the people marketing their products for actual results.
The downside to affiliate marketing
What few people talk about is that affiliate marketing constantly requires driving new customers by clicking on your affiliate links. This is not a “build it and they will come” scenario. While affiliate marketing can be very lucrative, you only receive commissions based on each individual sale. So while you may make a few dollars off one sale to Sally… you will not make any money off any of Sally's subsequent purchases unless she clicks on your link again prior to making another purchase.
To overcome this, it helps to funnel your readers and viewers to a space where they can sign up for an email newsletter. Then email your list every week (or at least once a month), talking about the benefits of one of the products you have affiliate links for.
The other downside to essential oil affiliate opportunities is that they don't offer high commission percentages. The average I've seen is 2%-5%. Occasionally you may be able to find some for 15%. To overcome this, you need to have a solid and consistent marketing strategy.
Joining an Essential Oils Network Marketing Company
In case you haven't noticed… network marketing (also known as multi-level marketing, MLM, direct sales, social selling… etc) is hotly debated in the essential oil realm.
Contrary to the thousands of blog posts bashing the marketing strategy, Network Marketing is not a pyramid scam. It also isn't a get-rich-quick scheme. And prices are not inflated to manage their compensation plan. In fact, it is common practice for companies to spend 50% of their sales revenue to cover marketing expenses, regardless of how the marketing is conducted.
Becoming a Wellness Advocate, Brand Partner, Essential Oils Distributor, Associate, or Independent Business Owner… getting started with an existing oil business opportunity is an exciting time. There is plenty of room to design your own business plan using their products, whether you want. to focus on education first, build a local or online community, work local or online vendor events, blog, or utilize your network marketing company as an affiliate program. The best way to grow an essential oils network marketing business really depends on what resonates with you.
The best part for a company using the network marketing business model… it is ONLY paying for marketing that results in sales.
The best part for a marketer to use a network marketing company is that every time the customer logs in to make a subsequent purchase, you still earn the commission (even if they don't click your link first). Plus, you're able to leverage additional earning strategies through building a team. And some don't even require purchasing an expensive starter kit.
Just like Affiliate Marketing, Network Marketing is a much more efficient business model than running TV, direct mail, social media, and newspaper ads because they are only paying the marketers for actual sales instead of throwing money out into various methods hoping someone will come along and purchase. And you can grow your network marketing business using the same link technique as you would any other affiliate program.
The biggest difference between Affiliate Marketing and Network Marketing is Network Marketing provides commissions on recurring sales and leadership bonuses for teaching other people to help market the products too.
In fact, many Affiliate Marketing programs now offer bonuses for their Affiliates for recruiting new affiliates, which is, in essence, Network Marketing. Why? Because when marketers take their time, energy, and expense to train new marketers, the company's sales grow exponentially faster. And when those marketers recruit additional marketers the process happens even faster.
The downside to network marketing…
For a long time, I've been very much anti-MLM, along with “social marketing” and “Direct Sales,” which are varieties of Network Marketing. Too many people aren't taught appropriate marketing skills, causing them to become pushy, spammy, or obnoxious, giving network marketing a poor reputation. This doesn't mean it's a scam… just too many people taught ineffective ways to market their opportunities and products.
The bottom line… you get paid based on your results. There is no scam involved.
What to look for when considering an essential oil network marketing company
Not all teams and companies are the same. There are two important things to consider before joining a network marketing company: the company itself and the team.
Choosing the right team is just as important as the company you decide on. If you choose to incorporate Network Marketing into your business, be sure you know exactly what type of support to expect and whether or not the team you're thinking about joining has knowledge of how you plan to grow your business.
Also, look long and hard at their essential oil procurement process to ensure vivid transparency into how the products are made. Quality and contents in the overall product line are crucially important and will continue to be the top priority for many potential customers seeking higher wellness levels through using natural products. I highly recommend you check out my post about the dirty secrets of the essential oil companies. And be very selective with which company you choose while identifying what pieces of their marketing are just marketing and which sentences they use to show the truth.
Tips for Using Network Marketing To Grow Your Oily Business
When grown the right way, a network marketing business can have many social and emotional benefits, in addition to income. Growing your network marketing business is all about building relationships and helping those people solve specific problems they need help with.
Always focus on building relationships first. Network marketing isn't about speed and numbers. It is about cultivating a community, solving problems, and adding value to the products you offer.
Which business model is best?
When starting an essential oils business, the how/why/what you end up choosing 100% depends on what is best for you, your needs, and your values.
How do you envision your life and company?
Imagine for a moment… you just finished your morning routine, placing your golden key into that silver lock to open up your door… that beautiful smell greets you as you walk through the threshold, reminiscent of walking into your favorite spa. You sit at your desk, looking at your inventory report, wondering what you need to order next before tackling your marketing strategy. You meet and greet your customers as they trickle in, strategizing over what else you can offer them to purchase before they leave.
Maybe you decide to plan a few DIY classes to run next month. Or maybe you've decided to open your extra office to contract a massage therapist. Your mind is always running on what the next thing will be to help increase sales to cover your overhead expenses and lifestyle needs. If this sounds enjoyable, you should look into running your own shop… either online, offline, or merging the two together.
Or perhaps you need something a little less time-intensive…
Think of this… You hop online for a few hours a day to write a post or record a video about a product, something you did, or a fun fact just learned. Then go about your day tending to your life the way you need to do, periodically checking in to your email or social media accounts to review any comments or questions. Perhaps you want to enjoy:
- the flexibility of hopping on your computer from the beach, the vacation resort, or even while you're kids are playing in the backyard.
- time freedom you have of not missing any of your kids' extracurricular activities.
- knowing that 90% of what you create is reusable or ‘evergreen' content.
- hyper-focus abilities with solely sharing information and education.
- not need to worry about inventory, shipping, fulfilling orders, handling financing, or manufacturing.
If this sounds intriguing to you, then you may find you feel at home with pursuing an aromatherapy business in the affiliate or network marketing realm.
How to know which option is for you:
There are positives and negatives to everything, and there is no hard-set right or wrong answer. The best way to start your own essential oil business largely depends on which method resonates with you. If the first scenario above appeals to you, know you will need to eventually hire a team (employees) to help you. Without a team, you will become a slave to your store. Owning your own business takes a lot of time, and often can turn into owning a job. This also will require employees to help, or forego sales revenue to take a break in case of emergencies or vacation needs. These setbacks are ok, just as long as you are aware of them, and are savvy enough to prepare for them in advance.
Some companies utilizing the affiliate marketing model allow their marketers to receive a percentage of all the purchases the customer makes for the lifetime of that customer's account. This sets up the affiliate marketer for “residual income,” which is passive income that continues, even when you're no longer doing anything to earn it. Most affiliate programs only offer referral compensation for each individual purchase that resets after each click.
As described earlier, network marketing allows you to operate in a similar manner to affiliate marketing. You receive a commission or bonus on what the customer purchases for the life of the customer's account. Plus, you'll also receive a leadership bonus for the success of everyone you train. This allows you to produce truly passive income that grants you the lifestyle most people crave… not needing to ask for time off, not needing to worry about not having enough saved paid time off, not needing to worry about closing your business for vacation, sickness, or your kids' sporting events. You choose when you work, how you work, and with whom you work.
The downside to affiliate and network marketing programs is you are limited to following the policies of the company you're marketing and you're relegated to only promoting their discounts as they see fit.
Maximizing Efficiency: Merge An Online Store & Opportunity with A Physical Store
There are also programs that integrate the two to combine two programs, especially if your physical shop has an online and social media presence.
Some MLM companies offer professional accounts to retail establishments. This allows them to purchase their products at a reduced rate (lower than wholesale) with the intention of them reselling in a retail store, salon, or spa (etc).
Combining options like this would enable you to simultaneously help customers who love your products to also be able to order through you online, maybe even with the opportunity for a discount. You could offer them the option of purchasing through your store at retail prices or purchasing through you online at wholesale prices, which would allow them to enroll in the monthly auto-ship program, and provide you with additional passive income. This would also free up extra funds for emergencies or for much-needed time off.
As you progress through the sales, I would highly recommend adding in some sort of education event online or on your website where you can teach people. Teaching about how to use essential oils safely and offering courses or crafting sessions is a fantastic way to build community, brand recognition, and brand loyalty.
Personally, I do feel this is the best of both worlds.
The options I personally use and highly recommend
I'm a busy mom who stays home with two small children, homeschools, and a military wife. My family moves A LOT (anywhere from 1 to 3 years, sometimes more), which means a lot of uprooting everything frequently, often with little notice. I'll never forget having 3 days' notice to move from Rhode Island to Virginia! Our lifestyle doesn't leave much room for a physical retail shop, as much as I do periodically daydream about it. The military also gives us weight limits for our household moves, which also doesn't leave much room for storing inventory either. And for those duty stations my husband has orders for less than 2 years in length, we full-time live in our RV (which makes moving easier on the kids).
Because of our inconsistent lifestyle, employing both Affiliate Marketing and Network Marketing made sense for me, and my family.
To keep our family and business life as simple as possible with the least amount of stress possible, I use the internet for 90% of everything I do for my business, networking it all together through blogging and social media networking in addition to my in-person networking with our local homeschool and military family communities.
Here on EssentialOils.Life, I use a few different affiliate marketing links (mostly through Amazon, Mason Jars, and Drops of Joy) to help fund this website. Running your own website can be expensive (my websites cost slightly over $4,000/yr between the website hosting, necessary website add-ons, and other very useful complementary tools), so having a steady income from affiliated product sales definitely helps.
I do utilize the MLM business model as well through Young Living , and thoroughly enjoy blending it with blogging in addition to growing personal relationships with my customers and team leaders. The wonderful thing about already having a website is that I've opened my websites to unlimited contributions for my team members who enjoy writing but don't already have their websites, don't want to consistently write, or want an additional platform to publish on to increase their own visibility.
I personally find writing about and coaching new members on embracing a healthier lifestyle and self-care on all fronts of their lives (mental, spiritual, physical, social, professional, and home) to be incredibly rewarding.
Being able to put my business degree to use in coaching my Brand Partners has been incredibly fulfilling, especially after enduring some rough seasons of life that left me unemployed, chronically sick, and self-conscious about whether or not I could actually have a career again . This is what gave me my life's freedom back. Between the physical healing, emotional healing, and a sense of professional growth, I've become immensely grateful for all the opportunities and friendships this business model has brought in my direction.
I truly believe this is the best of both worlds, especially with having an INFP-A personality ( learn your personality type here ). I absolutely love being able to teach new business leaders how to properly run their businesses according to their lifestyle, values, strengths, personality, needs, and wants.
It's a lot of fun to witness my leaders growing their business effectively without being spammy, awkward, aggressive, or obnoxious.

Their expertise and guidance have been invaluable in navigating the complex procedures and ensuring compliance with all regulations.

How to Start A Small-Scale Essential Oil Extraction Business?
Learning how to start a small-level essential oil manufacturing business isn’t as simple as just reading an article on the internet or attending a seminar. It all depends on your level of experience, education, and training in the field. However, if you have an interest or knowledge about working in this sector, it is a profitable area to get into. Wondering how to start an oil manufacturing business of your own?
Here are some essential tips that will help you begin:
1. Study More to Perform Better
If you are interested in an essential oil manufacturing business , a good starting point is reading up on the subject thoroughly. There are many different sources online and elsewhere with excellent information about starting up an oil refining or distillation business of one’s own. While it may be tempting to skip right ahead and directly contact potential suppliers and manufacturers, doing so may prove to be time-consuming and frustrating.
2. Conduct Research About Licenses and Permits
Try to find as much information as possible before making any decisions whatsoever. Learn what sort of licensing and permit specific companies need to operate in your particular area, as well as learn about the federal, state, and local regulations that govern oil manufacturing businesses. In general, you should only work with licensed dealers and manufacturers. If you work with a company that is not correctly licensed, you will run into several problems down the line. For instance, you could be putting yourself at risk by allowing unlicensed personnel to work for you, especially if accidents occur. This can turn into a costly legal problem for you and your business.
3. Speak to Someone with Experience
Next, talk to people in your field who have their own essential oil manufacturing business or something in a related field. It is a logical step to get in touch with anyone you know who has started up their own small-scale oil company. Ask them how they did it, and learn from their experiences. These people will be more than willing to help you learn how to start a small-level oil company of your own. If not, there are plenty of books and websites available that provide all kinds of information and directions to follow.
4. Get Your Essential Oil Manufacturing Equipment in Place
Once you have all of the basic information down, the next step in your essential oils manufacturing business plan is to get the oil extraction equipment together. This includes access to machineries like vacuum distillers and hot water machines. As you begin your search for equipment like this, be aware that prices will fluctuate depending on what type of equipment you buy, where you purchase it, and how large you intend your business to be. Don’t make the mistake of looking for a bargain deal when it comes to equipment. Sometimes what you find in such deals isn’t good in terms of quality. You should shop around to get the best possible price on the equipment you need but invest well in this long-term asset.

5. Set Up a Small Laboratory
Once you have all of your equipment set up, you can start setting up a small laboratory. This type of setup is similar to what you would do with any business when starting small and thinking big! To properly use your equipment and get the best product, you will need a lab. Setting up a lab is fairly easy and inexpensive. All you need is access to the internet, a phone, and some essential equipment. If you are feeling a bit more advanced, consider renting some of the essential equipment so that you can get started right away.
6. Understand the Basics of the Essential Oil Market
The next step in starting an essential oil manufacturing business is learning the basic oil extraction processes. This process will help you understand the oil market. If you want to succeed in this field, you must know all about the various stages and stakeholders that will impact the final product you can create.
7. Keep Track of the Essential Oil Advertising Strategies
You have to know about the oil marketing strategies if you want to run a successful business. You must learn the marketing tactics of the oil market, including the marketing of the oil products, promotion of new oil products, and oil company news. All these marketing tactics will help you increase sales of the products that you sell.
8. Understand its Purposes and Applications
Next, you can learn how to develop the essential oil business for industrial, medical, or chemical processes. In addition to this, you can learn about the development, purification, and refinement of the oil. You can get more information about it on the internet.
9. Find the Right Customers Through the Internet
Once you’ve got everything up and running, your next goal should be finding customers . There are several ways that you can do this. You can post a sign-up sheet in local stores, advertise in newspapers and magazines, or send out hand-written notes. The easiest way is, of course, through the internet.
Now that you know all about how to start an essential oil business, it is time to get started. Begin your research, collect the funds and the tools for the same, and go for it. We wish you good wishes in your essential oil business journey!

How To Start Lemongrass Oil Manufacturing Business
- April 14, 2023
- by Next What Business Research Team
Lemongrass oil has a strong lemon-like odor due to its high citral content (75-90%). The minimum commercial requirement is 70% citral content. The major quality-checking measures are its citral content and its solubility in alcohol. This is an essential ingredient in toiletry products such as toilet soaps, bath salts, etc.
It is also employed in artificial lemon flavoring and in the manufacture of ionenes. Ionenes are very important for the production of artificial flavors, perfumes, and soaps and as raw materials for vitamin A manufacturing. Here in this article, we intend to explore how to start a small-scale lemongrass oil manufacturing business.
The oil is of a reddish-yellow to reddish-brown color, with a strong, lemon odor. It is also used in pharmaceutical preparations, such as pain balms, disinfectants, and mosquito-repellent creams.
Lemongrass Oil Market Potential
Lemongrass oil is an important essential oil. As the demand for aromatic cosmetics is increasing, the demand for this oil is also growing. Additionally, awareness about the advantages of essential oils is growing among the Indian population. Furthermore, mass consumers are becoming conscious of the harmful effects of chemical cosmetics and personal care products.
Globally India is one of the major producers of this oil. Generally, imports dominate the trade of this oil in industrialized countries. Some of the major importers are Western Europe and North America. However, Japan has accounted for about 10% of total demand.
As the demand for this oil is growing, the areas of cultivation of lemongrass are also increasing. Farmers are showing more interest in producing lemongrass. In this scenario, starting a lemongrass oil manufacturing business is a financially viable project for entrepreneurs.
Lemongrass Oil Manufacturing Business Compliance
This oil has versatile usage in the industry as a raw material. So, it is advisable to check your state law before commencing the business. Here we put a basic list of requirements.
- First of all, determine the form of your business and register accordingly.
- Apply for a Trade License from the local Municipal authority.
- Apply for Udyog Aadhaar MSME online registration. It is optional. However, it helps in getting loans under the Govt. subsidy scheme.
- If you want to sell the oils for flavoring the food, then you will need to apply for an FSSAI license.
- Apply for GST Registration .
Lemongrass Oil Manufacturing Plant Setup & Machinery
The most important aspect is, you must establish the plant nearby the lemongrass plantation field. So that you can procure the raw material easily. For a small-scale operation, a 1000 Sq Ft covered area is sufficient. However, check the electricity supply and availability of water and transportation facilities.
List of Machinery
- Evaporator vessel
- Florentine flask
- Steam boiler
- Pump (condensate)
- Pump (cooling water)
- Cooling tower
Lemongrass Oil Manufacturing Process & Raw Materials
Steam distillation is the preferred method for large-scale lemongrass oil production. First of all, you will need to produce the steam in a boiler. Then introduce the steam into the vessel which contains the leaves and water.
Then locate the leaves on a grid placed at a certain distance above the level of the water which fills the bottom of the vessel. The water is vaporized indirectly by steam flowing in a pipe coil submerged in the water. The water vapor plus the distilled oil coming from the evaporator vessel is recovered in a separate water-cooled condenser. Then separate the mixture flowing out of the condenser by decantation in a Florentine flask.
The lemongrass oil floats at the top. Here you can separate it easily. However, the distilled water still contains some soluble parts of the oil and therefore is sent back to the evaporator.
Soil Selection
The lemongrass plants grow well in soils not suitable for richer production plants. Sandy and rather dry soils yield relatively more oil and oil of higher citral content than plants from very fertile soils.
A lemongrass plantation has a life cycle of 6 to 8 years. The oil yield reaches its maximum around the third or fourth year and its annual average value ranges between 15 and 20 kg/ha with three crops per year. The ratio of oil to leaves is equal to 0.348%. Therefore, you will need to procure about 288 kg of lemon grass to produce 1 kg of essential lemongrass oil.
