Long and Short Computer Essay

The term computer was once used to refer to a person who did computation, unlike today. The development of early prototypes that led to the modern computer is credited to many individuals throughout history. A series of breakthroughs, beginning with transistor computers and then integrated circuit computers, resulted in the development of transistor technology and the integrated circuit chip, causing digital computers to largely replace analogue computers.

In this essay, we will discuss the various components and types of computers and talk about their uses in various fields.

Long Computer Essay in English

A computer is an electronic tool that manipulates data or information. It can store, retrieve, and process information. We can type documents, send emails, play games, and browse the Web using a computer. It can also be used to edit spreadsheets, presentations, and even videos, or create them.

Early computers were conceived only as devices for calculating. Simple manual devices such as the abacus have helped individuals do calculations since ancient times. Some mechanical devices were built early in the Industrial Revolution to automate long, tedious tasks, such as guiding patterns for looms. In the early 20th century, more sophisticated electrical machines performed specialized analogue calculations.

Common Components of Computers

All those parts of a computer that are tangible physical objects are covered under the term hardware. The hardware includes circuits, computer chips, graphics cards, sound cards, memory (RAM), motherboards, displays, power supplies, cables, keyboards, printers and "mice" input devices.

There are five main hardware components:

Input Devices:

These are devices that are used to enter data/information in the central processing unit. Example- keyboard, mouse, scanner, document reader, barcode reader, optical character reader, magnetic reader etc.

Output Devices:

These are devices that provide the processed data/information into human-readable form. Example- monitor, printer, speaker, projector etc.

Control Unit:

The control unit handles the various components of the computer; it reads and interprets (decodes) the instructions for the program, transforming them into control signals that activate other computer parts.

Arithmetic Logic Unit:

It is capable of performing arithmetical and logical functions. The set of arithmetic operations supported by a specific ALU may be restricted to addition and subtraction or may include functions of multiplication, division, trigonometries such as sine, cosine, etc., and square roots.

Central Processing Unit:

The ALU, control unit and registers and together called the CPU. It is sometimes called the computer's brain, and its job is to perform commands. We send instructions to the CPU whenever we press a key, click the mouse, or start an application.

Software refers to computer parts, such as programs, data, protocols, etc., that do not have a material form. In contrast to the physical hardware from which the system is built, the software is that portion of a computer system consisting of encoded information or computer instructions.

It is sometimes called "firmware" when the software is stored in hardware that can not be easily modified, such as with a BIOS ROM on an IBM PC compatible computer.

Computer hardware and software require each other, and neither of them can be realistically used on their own. There are four main components of a general-purpose computer: the arithmetic logic unit (ALU), the control unit, the memory, and the I/O (collectively called input and output) devices.

Uses of Computer

Computers are used in various fields, such as homes, businesses, government offices, research organizations, educational institutions, medicine, entertainment, etc. because of their features and powerful functions. They have taken sectors and companies to a whole new level.

Computers are best suited for the collection, analysis, categorization, and storage of data in science, research and engineering. They also help scientists to exchange data both internally and internationally with each other.

Computers in the government sector are used to perform various functions and improve their services. In most cases, data processing tasks, the maintenance of citizens' databases, and the promotion of a paperless environment are the primary purposes of using computers. In addition to this, computers play a key role in the country's defence system.

Health and Medicine-

They are used to preserve information, records, live patient monitoring, X-rays, and more from patients. Computers assist in setting up laboratory tools, monitoring heart rate and blood pressure, etc. Besides, computers allow physicians to easily exchange patient data with other medical specialists.

They help people get different educational materials (such as images, videos, e-books, etc.) in one place. Also, computers are best suited for online classes, online tutoring, online exams, and task and project creation. Also, they can be used to maintain and track student performance and other data.

Most countries use online banking systems so that customers can access their data directly. People can verify the balance of their account, transfer cash, and pay online bills, including credit cards. Besides, banks use computers to execute transactions and store client information, transaction records, etc.

Short Computer Essay in English

A computer's a programmable device that accepts raw data(input) and processes it as output with a group of instructions (a program) to supply the result. It renders output after performing mathematical and logical operations and can save the output for future use. The word "computer" derives from the word "computare" in Latin, which means calculating.

Types of Computer

Computers are of different types based on different criteria. Based on their size, computers are of five types:

Micro Computers-

It is a single-user computer that has less capacity for speed and storage than the other types. For a CPU, it uses a microprocessor. Laptops, desktop computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), tablets, and smartphones are common examples of microcomputers. Microcomputers are generally designed and built for general use, such as browsing, information search, the internet, MS Office, social media, etc.

Mini Computers-

Minicomputers are also referred to as "Midrange Computers." They are multi-user computers designed to simultaneously support multiple users. Therefore, they are generally used by small companies and firms.

Mainframe Computers-

It is also a multi-user computer that large companies and government organizations use to run their business operations as large amounts of data can be stored and processed. Banks, universities, and insurance companies, for example, use mainframe computers to store data from their customers, students, and policyholders.

Super Computer-

Among all types of computers, supercomputers are the fastest and most costly computers. They have an enormous capacity for storage and computing speeds and can therefore perform millions of instructions per second.

It is a single-user computer with a comparatively more powerful microprocessor and a high-quality monitor compared to a mini-computer.

Benefits of Computers:

It increases productivity.

It helps in connecting to the internet.

It helps in organizing data and information.

It allows storing large amounts of data.

“Calculations for things such as automotive design, weather forecasting, and aerospace use supercomputers. Embedded computers are used for functions in a larger product. They are located in things such as automobiles, consumer electronics and office machines. As we all know computers come in many shapes and sizes. They can be used for many different things and can be located anywhere. Technology has increased so much that the most unheard compact thing can be a computer.

Dawson stresses that computers can come in all shapes and sizes. There are different types of computers, such as personal computers, mobile computers, game consoles, and supercomputers, each with its own functions and specialties. He briefly touches on each type of computer and its uses. Technology has come a long way, as the most complex computers are everywhere, whether in laboratories, offices, or even our mobile phones or watches.

“Critics argue that spell check and other computer features that automatically correct errors in spelling and punctuation make students too lazy to learn and apply the rules themselves. These features, however, help point out where students went wrong and offer valuable learning opportunities that can help students enhance their understanding of appropriate spelling and punctuation.”

In her essay, Barroso discusses the advantages and disadvantages of incorporating computers into education. They allow schools to maximize online resources, foster student engagement, and make it easier for teachers and students to perform school-related tasks. However, they may make students lazy to check mistakes, thinking that the computers will automatically check them. Ultimately, the pros outweigh the cons.

“As far as I concerned, computer is a great invention and it is useful to human life. It should be impossible to live without computer as we get too much used of computers nowadays. However, we should use it wisely. We know the fact that the more we rely on computer, the more we will lose in our life. So, we should also find ways to make our dependence on computers less dangerous to us, so that we will not rely on computer completely.”

Fox discusses the state of society today where we rely far too much on computers. They help us greatly in our daily lives, but they have made us depend on technology for information rather than thinking for ourselves. And if something goes wrong, like the servers crash, the world is at a standstill. Computers are a net good for society, but we must avoid revolving our lives around technology.

“In data science terms, this phase is somewhat akin to ‘Model Training’ — the more things a child is exposed to the more the synapses associated with it get built. A good example is language — the more a child is exposed to linguistics in early years, the more evolved the area of her brain that is associated with languages would get. Ditto for other cognitive and non-cognitive abilities.”

Prakash discusses the different ways in which our brains operate as computers. An information processing system has five components: input, output, storage, processing, and program. The human brain does have all of these components, which are used to perform our daily functions. She looks into how human intelligence can be “trained,” like computers are developed.

5. The Human Brain vs. Supercomputers… Which One Wins? By John Staughton

“When the brain identifies a more efficient or effective way to compute and function, it can morph and alter its physical and neuronal structure, hence the term “plasticity“. Until we achieve true Artificial Intelligence (in which computers should theoretically be able to re-wire themselves), neuroplasticity will always keep the human brain at least one step ahead of “static” supercomputers.”

Staughton writes about how much more advanced computers have become in recent decades, with some of them being able to outsmart humans in tasks such as chess. However, he explains that our brains are very different from technology and are inherently superior to even the most powerful computers in terms of efficiency, adaptability, and many other factors. However, he keeps the door on computers, eventually developing beyond our capabilities in the future.

The Impact of Computers Essay

Introduction, the singularity is near, works cited.

Advancement in technology has various benefits as it makes it easier for people to perform tasks. Computers have for instance revolutionalised the way tasks are performed in levels no human mind can fathom. However, with more rapid improvement in computer technology one can clearly underscore its impact on human beings and society in general. One could equally speculate that the technology has an impact on a wide range of areas such as human relations, ethics, politics, religion etc.

Scholars and even philosophers have toyed with the idea that the computer could in the long run replace the human capacity to do tasks. This will lead to a situation where all human beings will resort to computers. Morris (98) argues that ‘… the ever-accelerating progress of technology gives the appearance of approaching some essential singularity in the history of the race beyond which human affairs, as we know them, could not continue.

Kurzweil sees singularity as a period during which the pace of technology change will be so rapid, its impact so deep, that human life will be irreversibly transformed.’

Kurzweil talks of epochs which represent how humans’ intelligence has exponentially grown. In the early epochs, he shows how intelligence power has evolved from biology, through information in DNA; technology, through information in neural patterns etc (Morris 105).

It is in the fifth epoch that there is an intersection where technology masters the methods of biology. Here intelligence of humans thus falls. He finally talks of a highly functioning human intelligence spreading throughout the universe. This intelligence is non-biological.

Technology could affect several aspects of social life. Kurzweil predicts a situation where technology would lead to immortality. Look at the impact this situation could impact on the resources; many people will clamber for the scarce resources. This could actually lead to unrest between nations and wars resulting from such demand would be the order of the day.

It is therefore worth noting the relationship of humans to computers over the next 100 years. I feel that human beings will over-rely on computers over the next 100 years to such an extent that human capacities will be overlooked (Morris 125). One can for example already see how the internet is used to do virtually everything from serving as a platform on which business transactions are carried to dating.

In Why the West Rules For now: The pattern of History and what they Reveal about the Future , Morris has clearly given a chronology of how civilizations have developed and failed through reasons beyond their control (Morris 114). He has, in addition, given examples of how rapid technological growth made Britain become the leader among economic and maritime giants; a record by which one can see how technology may lead to shifting power, basing on who advances faster.

Technological ‘war’ could lead to tension reminiscent of the Cold War. It is therefore worth noting how technological change could affect the international relations. Technological advancement may lead to redundancy in human labor. One can only guess how millions could immigrate in search of labor overseas and the effect this would cause nations.

Technological advancement has revolutionized the way we do things; it has cut the distance thereby making the world a global village (Morris 150). Communication is now faster therefore making it easy to do business on the virtual platform. Since people working on a globalised platform may need some agreeable standardization, I feel that this technological advancement may lead to a situation where human beings may develop global institutions of governance since technology has broken the geographical borders.

In conclusion, one can observe that there seems to be a pattern of events that can predict how events will be in future. That is, we could be headed to a form of singularity.

Long Essay on Computer 400 words

Computer essay 6 (400 words).

Invention of the computer has made many dreams come true even we cannot imagine our lives without computer. Generally computer a device used for many purposes like information storage, email, messaging, software programming, calculation, data processing and many more. Desktop computer need a CPU, an UPS, a keyboard and a mouse for well functioning however laptop does not need anything to add outside as it included with all inside. Computer is an electronic device having big memory which can save any data value. We are living in the advanced world of computer in the 21 st century.

Earlier the functioning of the old generation computer very limited but new generation computers are amazing with lots of functioning. Charles Babbage had invented the first mechanical computer which was totally different from the modern day computer. The aim of computer invention was to create a machine which can perform very fast mathematical calculations. During the World War II it used to locate and estimate the direction and speed of weapons of the enemies. Modern day computers are available with the artificial Intelligence technology to helps us in every sector of life.

New generation computer highly advanced means smaller, lighter, speedier and more powerful. Now a day, it is running in almost all walks of life like weather forecasting, guidance of spacecraft, examinations, education, shopping, traffic control, high level programming, automation in banks, railway ticket booking, playing games, medical sector, machinery operations, job opening, business also crime detection etc.

It is the backbone of the Information Technology including with the internet and proved that nothing is impossible today. If there are positive effects of the computer on the life of human being, it also negatively affected the human lives such as rise in the Cyber crime, pornographic websites can accessed by kids or younger and many more however using some preventive measures we can safe from its negative effects.

The whole human fraternity is becoming highly dependent on the computer technology; no one can imagine life without computer. As, it has spread its wings so deeply in every area and made people used of it. It is very beneficial for the students of any class. They can use it to prepare their projects, learn poems, read different stories, download notes for exam preparations, collect large information within seconds, learn about painting, drawing, etc. However it enhances the professional skills of the students and helps in getting job easily.

What Students Are Saying About Tech in the Classroom

Does technology help students be more organized, efficient and prepared for the future? Or is it just a distraction?

An illustration of a large open laptop computer with many teeth, biting down on a small schoolhouse.

By The Learning Network

Is there a problem with screens in schools?

We invited students to weigh in on that question in our Picture Prompt Tech in the Classroom , which was based on an Opinion essay arguing that we should “get tech out of the classroom before it’s too late.”

Is there too much tech in your school day? — we asked students. Would you prefer more screen-free time while you are learning, or even during lunch or free periods?

Below, they share the good, the bad and the ugly about technology use in school.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the conversation on our writing prompts this week!

Please note: Student comments have been lightly edited for length.

Some students saw the value of technology in schools, including its ability to prepare students for the future.

I believe that technology in the classroom is a good thing when it is properly moderated. I think completely taking away screens from a student will not help them develop computer skills which they will most likely need in a world like ours, where most of everything is online. Sometimes phones cannot get the job done, and computers will be needed. If schools completely remove devices from the curriculum, then students will be completely clueless when they take classes involving a computer. Too much screen time can be bad for the student, but if it is well moderated, then screen time won’t be an issue.

— Saheed, GMS

I personally do not mind the amount of technology in the classroom. I personally find typing to be a lot easier instead of writing. On top of that, this amount of technology is used in adults’ day to day lives, too. Writing has become less and less relevant for everyone, because most jobs require a computer nowadays. So I think it’s actually better to have the amount of technology we do in the classroom.

— Timothy, Greenbelt Middle

They said, even though there might be down sides, the good outweighs the bad.

Screens in the classroom allows students to complete work in a more organized manner and use online resources to help them learn. It helps teachers to be able to make sure students turn work in before a certain time. However, having screens in the classroom raises students overall screen time which is bad for their eye health and sleep.

— Emily, Greenbelt Middle

I believe that computers should definitely be used at school because it has more pros than cons. They help with everything. The only problem with them is the people using them. The people using them are often misusing them and not charging them.

— Deegan, California

And they argued that tech is so entrenched in the student experience that taking it away would cause a lot of disruption.

There are no problems with screens in school. I believe without screens, school would be much less productive, produce so much waste of paper, and assignments would be lost a lot. Also when I have paper homework, which is almost never, almost every time I get it I forget because everything is on the iPad. This is important because if there is any change in the iPads we use, it’ll affect everyone drastically. Also it would just be really annoying to get used to a whole new thing.

— August, GBW

But another contingent of students said, “There is definitely a problem with screens in school.” They called them a distraction.

There is definitely a problem with screens in school. While regular technology use in school is highly efficient and much more convenient than using textbooks and paper, I still feel like using technology as the main method for learning is detrimental. There are plenty of students in my classes who are hiding behind their iPads to play games or go on their phones rather than utilizing their technology to enhance their learning experience. So in turn, I think we need to minimize (but not completely take away) the prominence of tech in our classrooms. This matters because it’s so important for students to learn how to completely pay attention and focus in on one task so that they are prepared for the moments in life where they don’t get the opportunity to look at their phone if they’re bored or to text their friends. Trust me, this may seem like I’m one hundred percent anti-phones but the truth is I love my phone and am somewhat addicted to it, so I realize that it’s a major distraction for myself in the classroom. Moreover, staring at an iPad screen for 7 hours a day puts significant strain on our eyes, so for the sake of our health and our attention spans, we need to minimize tech use in school.

— Mary, Glenbard West High School

Tech inside classrooms has had many positive effects and many negative effects. Without technology, it would take forever to find sources/information and it would also take ages to do complex things. With technology, people can easily find information and they can easily do many things but the big downside is that they can easily just search up games and get distracted. On one side, it has provided many different changes to students so they can learn in a fun and entertaining way but in another, people are mostly on their phones scrolling through YouTube or Instagram. Many people don’t have control over their body and have a big urge to go on their cellphones.

— Srikanth, Greenbelt Middle School

In my opinion, yes there is a problem with screens in schools. It distracts kids from focusing on their work. Many students are always on their phone during class, and it is disrespectful as well as sad for them. They will not be able to learn the material that is being taught. Personally, I think that screens should be reduced in class, but I do not think that is possible. Whenever a teacher takes away someone’s phone, they get very mad and say that it is their right to have their phone. In these cases it is very confusing on how to act for the teacher!

— Kadambari, gms

Some reported that their peers use technology to cheat.

It might be a problem depending on what people are doing. If it is used for school, like typing an essay, working on homework, or checking your grades it’s okay, but I know people who abuse this privilege. They go onto YouTube and watch things, listen to music when they aren’t supposed to, and play games. Many people cheat to the point where it takes forever to start a test because people don’t close out their tabs. It helps to be able to do these ‘Quick Writes’ as we call them in my ELA class because I can write faster (I know it’s called typing). It’s harder to access things because of the restriction because people mess around so they block so many useful websites and words from our computer. I like to type on the computer, but I feel people abuse this privilege too much.

— Nina, California

When the teachers assign tests on computers, sometimes teachers have to lock students’ screens to make sure they’re not cheating. Sometimes they do it on paper and they try to cheat while hiding their phones in their laps. And then if another student sees them doing that, they will tell and the student who would have the phone out could start a big argument.

— Taylor, Huntington Beach

Several lamented the sheer number of hours teenagers spend in front of screens.

I feel that we have become too comfortable with using screens for nearly every lesson in school, because it has gotten to the point where we are spending upwards of 4 hours on our laptops in school alone. I understand that it would be hard to switch back to using journals and worksheets, but it would be very beneficial for kids if we did.

— Chase, school

I think we should reduce the tech a little just because most students are going straight to screens when they get home, after a full day of screens … Although I know this would be very difficult to do because everything in the world now seems to go online.

— Jaydin, California

And they even worried about their handwriting in a world full of typing.

I think technology in a class is very helpful, but I think that we should incorporate more writing. Since the pandemic, most of the work has been online and it never gave students the opportunity to write as much. When we came back from lockdown, I almost forgot how to write with a pencil. My handwriting was very different. And now we don’t get much time to write with our hands so I think we should have fewer screens.

— Eric, Greenbelt

Some students said that less time spent on screens in school would give them a break from the always-on digital culture they live in.

Although typing is useful and using the internet is very useful, I think we should go back to how it was about 20-40 years ago when all people used the computer for was to type an essay. Drama didn’t get spread in a millisecond, we didn’t have to worry as much about stereotypes. Now all kids want to do is text each other and watch videos. I’m well aware that I have fallen into this trap and I want out, but our lives revolve around technology. You can’t get away from it. I know this is about schools not using technology, which the world without it would be impossible now, but life would be so much simpler again.

— Ivy, Huntington Beach, CA

I will say that my phone is usually always with me during school hours, but I don’t use it all the time. I may check the time or play a short game as a brain break. But I do see some people absolutely glued to their phones during class time, and it’s honestly embarrassing. You really can’t go without your phone for an hour?? It’s almost like an addiction at this point. I understand using your phone to quickly distract yourself; I do it too. And I also think it’s okay to have your phone/electronic during lunch time or free periods. But using it to the point that you can’t properly pay attention in class is just embarrassing. So, in summary, I do think that schools are having a problem with screens.

— Allison, Greenbelt Middle School

And they named classes in which they think screens do and do not have a place.

I feel like for classes for younger kids, technology is definitely not good. Kids should be playing, using their hands, and actually experiencing things instead of being on tablets in kindergarten. I think using computers in school is good though. It’s a lot more efficient, and we live in a society where fast and efficient things are the trend.

— sarah, maryland

I think screens have their place, and will always have their place, in schools and education. The capabilities of computers will always surpass anything else, and they should not be banned from school environments. Still, I have one exception: English class. Other than final drafts of essays, everything in English should be on paper. You can formulate ideas better and minimize outside influence on your thinking.

— Addie, The Potomac School

Computer historian from Clay County lists landmark devices: Perhaps you had one?

essay on computer devices

We asked Orange Park computer historian David Greelish , who recently made a documentary on Apple's old Lisa computer, to give us a timeline on the development of personal computers, listing specific models and where they fit in.

Here's his list. Perhaps you had one of these; if so, you could be practically historic.

Greelish writes: There is so much more to the evolution of the personal computer, especially after 1990 and Windows 3.0, but the Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) and 32-bit microprocessor set the foundation for constant improvement up to where we are today. Desktop computers were also only the first “tier” of personal computing, as notebook (portables) and handhelds followed as the second and third.

The Lisa was the first commercially available personal computer (consumer-based, with a microprocessor) that delivered what we all use today (mouse-driven, office metaphor — desktop, files, folders, icons, etc. — graphical user interface). Our smartphones are simply a variation of this, with our fingers replacing the mouse. Though it was a market failure, the Apple Lisa set the stage for everything else that followed.

Neuralink brain-chip implant encounters issues in first human patient

By Kate Gibson

Edited By Aimee Picchi

May 9, 2024 / 12:08 PM EDT / CBS News

Neuralink's brain-computer interface device has encountered issues since it was implanted in its first human subject, according to the company owned by Elon Musk.

Some of the device's electrode-studded threads started retracting from the brain tissue of quadriplegic Noland Arbaugh about a month after it was surgically implanted in late January , causing it to transmit less data, Neuralink wrote in a blog post on Wednesday.

The Wall Street Journal first reported on the malfunction that caused a reduction in bits-per-second, a measure of the speed and accuracy of the patient's ability to control a computer cursor by thinking.

Neuralink made up for the malfunction with multiple software fixes, resulting in a "rapid and sustained improvement in BPS, that has now superseded Noland's initial performance," the company said.

The company is now focused on improving text entry for the device and cursor control, which it hopes in the future to broaden its use to include robotic arms and wheelchairs.

Neuralink in September said it had received approval from U.S. regulators to recruit human beings for the trial as part of an effort to use technology to help people with traumatic injuries operate computers with only their thoughts.

The Food and Drug Administration approved the trials of the device, which has not been given broad regulatory approval needed for widespread or commercial use of the technology.

When I go to the settings, (system, devices, etc screen) Microsoft has changed the user to another account and email address I added to our desktop outlook 7 months ago (18 months after purchasing the computer). The change has happened in the last week (coinciding with outlook automatically opening at start up). The computer shows the original name we gave it and uses the original password when we turn it on. Why is it now showing a different user and email address and not the original. How can I change this? (Please keep it simple). Very Many thanks

Welcome to the Microsoft community and thank you for asking your question in the community!

I understand from your description that you seem to have changed the alias of your account and that your computer still shows the email name you were using before when you log in.

The account information modified online, and the system account information may not be synchronized, I suggest you can try to reconfigure a local account and bind the Microsoft account again to see if it can be synchronized to the account information modified online.

You can create a new local account by following the steps below and switch to the newly created account. Then log in to your Microsoft account to see if the login name has been changed to the name you previously set up. Visit Create a local user or administrator account in Windows - Microsoft Support for more details.

Create a local user account

Select Start > Settings > Accounts , and then select Family & other users . (On some versions of Windows, you'll see Other Users.)

Next to Add another user , select Add account .

Select I don't have this person's sign-in information , and on the next page, select Add a user without a Microsoft account .

Enter a username, password, or password hint, or choose Security questions, and then select Next.

Change a local user account to an administrator account

Select Start > Settings > Accounts .

Under Family & other users , select the name of the account owner (you should see "Local account" below the name), and then select Change account type.

Under Account type , select Administrator , and then select OK.

Sign in with the new administrator account.

Note: If you choose an account that shows an email address or doesn't say "Local account," you're granting admin permissions to a Microsoft account, not a local account.

Note: If the new account is normal, please do not delete the old account before backing up the old account data to avoid any data loss.

Note: If the new account can install the feature normally and you want to use the new account, you need to understand that the user data in the old account (in the C:\user\<your username>) directory will not be synchronized To the new account, you can only restore the data as much as possible by copying all the data (files, folders) in the old account to the new user folder and overwriting the files/folders in new user account, then there is no 100% guarantee of success including your user data from some Windows apps and all third-party apps in the old account will not be synced. So please proceed with caution.

Please let me know if I misunderstood. Tell us the results and we will get back to you as soon as possible. We look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards

Android bug leaks DNS queries even when VPN kill switch is enabled

Sergiu gatlan.

  • May 3, 2024

Android leak

Image: Midjourney

A Mullvad VPN user has discovered that Android devices leak DNS queries when switching VPN servers even though the "Always-on VPN" feature was enabled with the "Block connections without VPN" option.

"Always-on VPN" is designed to start the VPN service when the device boots and keep it running while the device or profile is on.

Enabling the "Block Connections Without VPN" option (also known as a kill switch) ensures that ALL network traffic and connections pass through the always-connected VPN tunnel, blocking prying eyes from monitoring the users' web activity.

However, as Mullvad found out while  investigating  the issue spotted on April 22, an Android bug leaks some DNS information even when these features are enabled on the latest OS version (Android 14).

This bug occurs while using apps that make direct calls to the getaddrinfo C function, which provides protocol-independent translation from a text hostname to an IP address.

They discovered that Android leaks DNS traffic when a VPN is active (but no DNS server has been configured) or when a VPN app re-configures the tunnel, crashes, or is forced to stop.

"We have not found any leaks from apps that only use Android API:s such as DnsResolver . The Chrome browser is an example of an app that can use getaddrinfo directly ," Mullvad explained.

"The above applies regardless of whether 'Always-on VPN' and 'Block connections without VPN' is enabled or not, which is not expected OS behavior and should therefore be fixed upstream in the OS."

Potential mitigations

Mullvad said that the first DNS leak scenario, where the user switches to another server or changes the DNS server, can be mitigated easily by setting a bogus DNS server while the VPN app is active.

However, it has yet to find a fix for the VPN tunnel reconnect DNS query leak, which is valid for all other Android VPN apps seeing that they're also likely impacted by this issue.

"It should be made clear that these workarounds should not be needed in any VPN app. Nor is it wrong for an app to use getaddrinfo to resolve domain names," Mullvad explained.

"Instead, these issues should be addressed in the OS in order to protect all Android users regardless of which apps they use."

In October 2022, Mullvad also found that Android devices were leaking DNS queries (e.g., IP addresses, DNS lookups, and HTTPS traffic) every time they connected to a WiFi network because of connectivity checks even if "Always-on VPN" was toggled on with "Block connections without VPN" enabled.

DNS traffic leaks present a significant risk to user privacy, potentially exposing their approximate locations and the online platforms they engage with.

Given the seriousness of this issue, you may want to stop using Android devices for sensitive activities or implement additional safeguards to mitigate the risk of such leaks until Google resolves the bug and backports the patch to older Android versions.

Update May 03, 17:02 EDT: A Google spokesperson sent the following statement: "Android security and privacy is a top priority. We're aware of this report and are looking into its findings."

Well, if the device isn't connected to a VPN and you're asking it to connect to one via host name, how is it going to do that without making a DNS request? Anyone know? Anyone? Bueller?

h_b_s Photo

h_b_s - 1 week ago

Any request should automatically fail in the circumstances where the user has the device set to always use a VPN but no VPN tunnel is active. It doesn't. That's considered a bug. Your question is nonsensical otherwise. You should probably go read up how networking functions, because your question displays an ignorance in even knowing how to frame the correct question.

We have seen reports like this before and it turned out to be issues with a specific VPN application and not a flaw in the core Android OS. I don't see any mention of verification with other Andorid VPN applications here.

mayormaynotbeano - 1 week ago

It doesn't really matter which one you choose. Like Mullvad, a lot of VPN providers are based on wire guard/openvpn. The problem is in the getaddrinfo function, not the VPN.
