Noe said he'll kill Vanitas at the end. Thanks, lol, I'd rather not know.
By the way, is Vanitas really just a simple human being? Judging by the amount of times they zoomed in his eyes I think not but feel free to spoil me.
I dont know but that spoiler pissed me off so much |
Idk if Vanitas really dies or not but that scene actually hooked me and I'm completely sold. |
Look at the title of the show. It's "The Case Study of Vanitas". So that ending is a reminder that Noé is probably narrating the events. It might seem like a big spoiler in the beginning, but soon you'll see how the journey is more important than the destination... |
"All truth is meaningless. In the end, 'meaning' comes from the mind of each individual human. Even when there is a single truth, it can mean different things to different individuals. The truth has no meaning in itself!" - Erika Furudo |
Vanitas no Carte is a story with a lot of mysteries that inspire many questions and theories. Noé saying what is gonna happen to Vanitas doesn't spoil anything. Mainly because we still have no idea of how this is going to happen or even if he's truly going to die. MochiJun, the mangaka, is a master of plot twists, and deceiving expectations. You can be sure that this isn't going to be as simple as it seems by just watching the first episode. About Vanitas being a simple human: |
People are way too fixated on the dying part. Anybody familiar with Pandora Hearts knows that the notion of death is always murky with Jun Mochizuki's works, and that's especially explicit when we deal with concepts like the world formula and supposedly immortal vampires. In the same scene that Noé claimed to have killed Vanitas in the manga, Vanitas told Noé that he . Maybe people don't die when they are killed. Maybe there are ways to revive dead people. Maybe Noé meant death in a metaphorical sense, and maybe Vanitas actually met a fate worse than death. Or maybe I'm played for a fool and Vanitas really died. The episode ending merely serves as a tease to facilitate viewer's speculation. It raised the death of a main character as a possibility, but it means absolutely jack as a "spoiler". You're not being spoiled. This is the author placing a bet with the viewer on whether this will turn out to be a legitimate tragedy, and you're free to call her bluff on it. |
Try watching it changing a little bit your perspective, instead of thinking what the ending is going to be, watch it focusing more on how it will be built, its a different form of watching a series that you should experience at least once in ur life Sorry if my english isnt perfect, im learning |
I'm very thrilled to know what will happen that will lead to vanitas death. So this is just a theory, the vampire of the blue moon said "my successor will bring forward the annihilation of vampires" is this a curse placed on vanitas who is supposedly the successor? Is he cursed to kill all the vampires somehow, and that's why he is defying his fate by healing them instead? Maybe vanitas will end up annihilating vampires no matter what he want, even if he tries to heal them, and in some point he will loose control to his curse and that will lead to noé killing vanitas to stop him. It's all just a theory though. There's a manga scene cut from anime where who I think is vanitas said to noé "noé. I won't die, even if I'm no longer here....". That scene was right before the scene when noé said he will kill vanitas, it's a scene from the future. |
Look at the title of the show. It's "The Case Study of Vanitas". So that ending is a reminder that Noé is probably narrating the events. It might seem like a big spoiler in the beginning, but soon you'll see how the journey is more important than the destination... Preach. The journey is always more interesting to hear about. Plus once you know what the destination is you want to know about the journey and how they got to where they are. I’m very excited for this show |
I don't consider it a spoiler or that it ruins me wanting to continue watching the anime at all. If anything it intrigues me more. I find that this is Noe telling the story of Vanitas hence the title of the anime/manga 'The Case Study of Vanitas'. I'm more interested in the journey and the story Noe will tell than the destination. |
I interpreted it as "Vanitas" dying (since this is a "title" he inherited along with the book) but not the actual character. Knowing the author, this will be a lot more complicated. Think of this as just a way to make the story more intriguing, and not an actual spoiler. |
I believe it's to make the viewers hooked on watching the show, to see "why" it happened, because it's not too hard to guess that Vanitas will die someday. Actually thinking about it in relations to the vampires, I think I might know where it's coming from, and it's super smart and cannot wait to see if it comes true or not. |
|
It's to hook the viewers like how mha said this is the story of how I became the no. 1 hero Well even if u know he will die u will still hope somewhere in ur heart for him to not die when the time comes Like how in infinity war u were spoiled that Avengers lose but still u couldn't stop hoping that they may win |
Blah blah blah blah .... So annoying. Are you bastards in heat or something? - Sakata gintoki |
Why did they thought it was a good idea to spoil the ending of the show, right in the very first episode? Noe said he'll kill Vanitas at the end. Thanks, lol, I'd rather not know. By the way, is Vanitas really just a simple human being? Judging by the amount of times they zoomed in his eyes I think not but feel free to spoil me. Well questions like these are a proof that people are not familiar with jun.... Okay first of all its not a spoiler..I dont know if u are familiar with jun mochizuki s works but she has a tendency to reveal things but only bits of it so the viewers can guess her story.. And in the end she shatters all the predictions with something new entirely in other words she is just tooo unpredictable and bold(Same case with pandora hearts manga). AND She is a pretty unique writer and always does things her way i mean most authors stories will kill the main character in the end their story for shock value, but she actually borrowed this concept in a completely different way (I mean can u name any story in which the writer reveals their main character dies in the end in the start) and since i have read the manga(Its still airing) the story is just way different then anything u might have been expecting. and its not a anti villian story too not to mention bones didnt add that one dialouge in noe flash back in which vanitas said So its a piece of inforamtion not a spoiler and something else entirely as a whole i mean in the next few episodes you will see how unique the world of vanitas actually is. Also We know luffy is gonne be the pirate king in the end, deku is gonna be the no 1 hero in the end and naruto being the hokage and all... so i dont see whats wrong with this and i doubt that will be the ending of vanitas as whole( Considering its Miss JUN) . And lastly if the adaptation is faithful, this would nt even happen(More precisly Wouldnt even be touched since only the latest chapters are related to this and considering the anime will end at chapter 42 or 43 if i am not wrong,Both cours included) And yes Vanitas is a human and one of the most tragic characters you will see in shounen but we still as manga readers dont know his entire story only maybe half and even that.. And if you are wondering how they survived the fall then |
If you're being told this right at the beginning, then it's not a spoiler, it's something the author you to know, and it's likely that there will be much more to it than you'll expect knowing Mochizuki. The manga is the same. |
It's not meant as a spoiler but rather as a teaser to act as a hook so it can focus more on how they got there, and yes vanitas is a human although saying he's simple wouldn't be right |
Look at the title of the show. I’m very excited for this show You also got to understand that suspense is also much more important to get you hooked.I'm still excited for the journey tbh. |
|
This is similar to Boruto's first episode with Kawaki and him fighting each other. Like others said, it's meant to hook you up and getting to know how they got there. rather than spoil the end. Most likely there will be plot twists and stuff. |
I understand why you'd think it'll completely kill the suspense, but I can confidently say that there's a lot more to unpack, even if you feel that everything might have been given away in the first episode. "Spoiling" the ending of a series in the beginning is simply a way to tell a story. Having read Mochizuki's previous work, and caught up with the latest chapters of Vanitas, I personally trust her completely to make this journey interesting and twist our expectations more than once (which she's already managed to do). She's the type of author who can make you care for a character you found uninteresting before in the span of one chapter or even a couple of pages, and also one who makes previously comedic scenes into foreshadowing or build upon it later to serve as character development. |
*Clears throat* Okay, let me tell you this: Same shit happened in the manga and we haven't reached to that conclusion yet, why? Because the story isn't finished and maybe, just maybe things will change at the end. |
Please follow the signature rules, as defined in the . |
It’s not a spoiler |
It is called The Case Study of *Vanitas* From Wikipedia: "A vanitas is a symbolic work of art showing the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death," It's not a spoiler if it's something you could've guessed from the title, lol. |
Perhaps the author did it specifically to annoy you!? Alternatively there's a reason you don't know about yet and knowing that would be the actual spoiler. |
Quantum ille canis est in fenestra |
I actually wonder if this is like the Naruto shipuden first episode, you see Naruto catching up to saske and what seems like Naruto being killed, by the time we get to the scene it plays out completely differently, or in boruto, I’ll send you to the place I sent the hokage, people thought oh Naruto is going to be killed, it’s later revealed that it’s not that, that he is simply sealed away. As stated before it could be ending him as in killing him, as metaphor, or something different. I for one don’t care for those types too much, but it’s not impossible that once killed can’t be revived somehow. |
I do think that what Noe said should not be taken literally. I imagine that at the end, Vanitas will end up disappearing(seems like a death scene) and Noe thought it was his fault. |
It's more of a writing style to create interest by making viewers continue watching to find answers, also as another user mentioned the title "case study of vanitas" does indicate that it is a narrative and may just be recalling events |
it doesn’t really spoil anything lmao |
That actually made me more hooked to know why it even ended that way. |
|
The point is that it’s not about “what happened” to Vanitas but “why” and “how” it happens to him. Just be patient and let the story run its course lol. It’s all told in the past tense through Noe and for all we know, he could be an unreliable narrator. |
Well anyone who views this as a spoiler is very simple minded and it shows the lack of experiences that they have. Just saying... |
I am sleepy |
it's actually for me that adds to the fun and mystery, if the real Vanitas will die I wonder how the ending of his life, some anime with a backward plot are better to follow than a forward plot. |

Like many advocates across the country, Julia Kaye was watching closely to see if Thursday morning would be the day the Supreme Court would dramatically curb access to the widely used abortion drug mifepristone.
Kaye, a senior staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union's Reproductive Freedom Project, was relieved when she learned the high court had decided unanimously to toss the challenge brought by anti-abortion doctors and maintain the status quo for medication abortion. But, Kaye warned "the battle is far from over" because the court dismissed the case on procedural grounds, rather than address whether the Food and Drug Administration had overstepped its bounds when it loosened restrictions on the drug.
"These extremist attorneys general told the Supreme Court earlier this year that even if these plaintiffs lose, the states will either try to continue this case in Texas, or else bring copycat lawsuits in other jurisdictions," Kaye said.
Anti-abortion advocates, including Mark Harrington, president of Created Equal, agreed the battle over access to abortion pills was ongoing. Some conservatives expressed disappointment about the decision, vowing they would continue the fight in the courts and the public square.
"They did not rule on the merits of the abortion pill or the FDA administration of the pill," Harrington said, the justices only ruled that the plaintiffs didn't have standing to sue.
Mifepristone, which was approved by the FDA nearly 25 years ago, was used in nearly two-thirds of abortions nationwide last year. The case had broad implications, and its scope was potentially farther reaching than the 2022 Dobbs ruling in terms of the states impacted. If the Supreme Court had ruled on the merits, Kaye said, access to the medication could have been stripped from people in every state, including in states where the procedure remains legal.
Kaye said the court could also have restricted access to the drug through the mail following a telehealth appointment, a format that has become a major pillar of abortion care.
"That would have been devastating, particularly for people of color, low-income patients, people living in rural areas and women in abusive households," Kaye said. "For these populations, having to pay for and arrange transportation and childcare, as well as time off work in order to travel long distances to obtain mifepristone would simply be impossible, and those patients would lose access to this essential health care altogether."
More: Welcome to Bristol, where America’s abortion debate is right on your doorstep
Some abortion advocates had prepared for the contingency that the court would restrict access to the pills. Amy Hagstrom Miller, president and CEO of Whole Woman's Health, said if the court had ruled differently, she planned to continue offering medication abortion at her clinics using a different drug regimen. She said she was relieved that wouldn't be necessary.
"Now we feel like not only can we continue to provide that care without disruption, but we could look at expanding our pills by mail program into more states so that we can give access to the abortion seekers without delay and without barriers," she said.
Though the decision was good news for Kelly Baden, vice president of public policy at the Guttmacher Institute, she said it is challenging to celebrate the victories given the ongoing threats to abortion access nationwide. She noted that the Supreme Court has yet to rule in another case that will determine if doctors can provide emergency abortions in states that banned the procedure after the court overturned Roe v. Wade.
"This decision is, again, welcome within the context that we're operating in, which is that abortion is totally abandoned in 14 states, restricted in others," she said. "But keeping things status quo is not enough to make me celebrate."
Mifepristone is among "the most studied medications" prescribed in the United States, and evidence supporting the drug's safety and efficacy is "overwhelming," according to an amicus brief filed in support of the FDA by the American Medical Association, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American Academy of Family Physicians and several other organizations. Experts have said mifepristone is safer than common drugs including Tylenol and Viagra.
But anti-abortion advocates such as Andrea Trudden, vice president of communications at Heartbeat International, said that just because the case was "decided on a technicality," it does not mean the drug is safe. She said that 1 in 25 women will visit an emergency room after taking it. The FDA's label says between 2.9-4.6% of women visited the ER after taking the medication during clinical studies. Studies show major adverse reactions to the drug are "exceedingly rare," occurring in about 0.3% of cases, according to the American Medical Association .
"While the decision may not have gone the way that we were looking for, it doesn't take away the fact that mifepristone does harm women, and the FDA was unilaterally taking away and stripping away those safeguards," Trudden said.
Ingrid Skop, an OB-GYN who serves as vice president and director of medical affairs at Charlotte Lozier Institute, an anti-abortion nonprofit, called the decision "deeply disappointing."
"As a practicing OB-GYN with over 30 years’ experience, I have seen firsthand that mail-order abortion drugs harm my patients, both mothers and their unborn children," Skop said in a statement. "Abortion advocates and corporate media ignore their stories as they shamelessly promote mail-order distribution of dangerous drugs without a single in-person doctor visit."
Kaye, from the ACLU, warned that despite the court's ruling, the threats to mifepristone and abortion access overall are not likely to end with this ruling. She said the ACLU will closely monitor new state laws restricting mifepristone, such as the law in Louisiana that reclassifies mifepristone and misoprostol as controlled substances.
Abortion access may hinge on the outcome of the 2024 election, she said, because a new administration could decide to use the 1873 Comstock Act "to not only strip away access to medication abortion through telemedicine, but in fact, to ban all abortion nationwide with the stroke of a pen, without even needing any Congressional action."
David Cohen, a professor of law at Drexel University, agreed, calling the Comstock Act "the number one issue facing abortion in this country right now." He said that though Thursday's decision "is a huge win" for abortion access, it's likely that more legal challenges will follow.
"It's an endless battle, right?" he said. "This battle will never end, no matter who wins in any one particular moment."

Vanitas (ヴァニタス, Vanitasu ) is a protagonist and the titular character of Jun Mochizuki 's The Case Study of Vanitas . Contrary to the legend of Vanitas of the Blue Moon , Vanitas claims to be "an average human being" who happened to inherit the Book of Vanitas . It is his stated intention to save the Vampire race by any means possible, using the Book of Vanitas not to spread Malnomen but to cure it. As such, he refers to himself as a doctor who specializes in Vampires. He commissions the help of Noé Archiviste , a Vampire sent by his teacher to research the Book of Vanitas and the series' narrator, in finding cases of Malnomen and curing them. [1]
Originally the child of a former doctor and a performer, Vanitas's biological mother died in childbirth, leaving him to be raised by his father and the traveling players he worked with. Their party was eventually attacked by Vampires, leaving Vanitas as the only survivor. Subsequently, he was picked up by the Catholic Church , and trained to be a Chasseur . However, his death was faked by Doctor Moreau , [2] and he was kept as a test subject, renamed No. 69. [3] There he would meet Mikhail , known as No. 71, and come to regard him as a younger brother. The two were subjected to inhumane experimentation in hopes of turning them into Vampires, all to no avail. Eventually, it was revealed they had received the blood of the Vampire of the Blue Moon, being the only human subjects not to reject it. This gave them abilities somewhat beyond normal human capacity, allowing them to heal slightly faster. The two were to be forcibly linked to the Books of Vanitas in a procedure which would destroy their minds, but were rescued by Vanitas of the Blue Moon. [4]
Desperate, Vanitas and Mikhail went along with Vanitas of the Blue Moon, and were taken as their adoptive children. While Mikhail quickly warmed up to his new guardian, Vanitas remained distrustful, despite taking an active role in supporting them and Mikhail. After some time had passed, Vanitas of the Blue Moon confessed that Vanitas and Mikhail would likely soon die due to the strain the Moreau's experiments had put on their bodies. They said that, lacking any other options, the two could be saved by becoming the Vampire's Kin . While Mikhail, whose body had begun to break down, quickly accepted, Vanitas vehemently refused. He killed the Vampire of the Blue Moon after being Marked , in an event he believed to have killed Mikhail, thus leading him to believe he was the only legitimate Kin of the Blue Moon. [2]
Vanitas is a slender, androgynous young man of average height. He has pale skin, large, expressive eyes, a round face, and a small chin. So blue are his eyes that they are used as an immediately identifiable trait, compared to the color of copper sulfate . An upper left canine tooth is especially pronounced, giving the appearance of fangs when his teeth were visible, though they are not as pronounced as vampires' fangs. His hair is long, black, and irregularly cut, his bangs falling into the center of his face. On either side of his face, his hair is straight cut, the left side to one level and the right side to two. Though he at times appears to wear a ponytail, his hair usually sits freely, the hair on either side of his head cut shorter than that down the middle. One cowlick sticks up from the right side of his head. Both of his ears are pierced, a simple stud worn in his right ear, while his left ear is pierced with a silver (gold, in the anime) hourglass-shaped earring that he inherited from Luna, and two rings through the helix.
Vanitas's reference sheet from volume 2.
While Vanitas wore several outfits over the course of the series, he usually wears a white shirt over black pants, a dark blue striped vest, a large blue bow tie, and an oversized black coat. As accessories, he wears a long, wide ribbon tied into a bow as a belt, short boots with white spats, and black gloves with claws embedded at the fingertips. His coat is long, with a wide collar and a single button, large enough to frequently fall over one shoulder. At its hem, it takes a baloon-like form, and is joked to float "through some mysterious power." Its sleeves are someone based on those of a furisode kimono . To his belt, he straps the Book of Vanitas, two knives, and two tool cases. His outfit is called "the outfit nobody understands." [5]
As a child, he looked much the same, though his hair was less cleanly cut. He was thin and physically diminutive, despite his active training as a chasseur. Prior to being Marked by Vanitas of the Blue Moon, his eyes were a darker shade of blue.
Vanitas seems to take nothing seriously, and almost always has a playful grin on his face. He acts impulsively most of the time, and his plans are normally reckless. Vanitas carries a mischievous air around him. He finds utmost amusement in Noé's abnormal reactions to things. However, he is capable of showing seriousness when the situation called for it, as well as anger. He is very flirtatious, as seen in the way he behaves around Jeanne.
Beneath his flippant attitude, Vanitas is a broken man who despises both humans and vampires, but hates himself more than either. Vanitas hates being vulnerable around people, refusing to go to sleep around anyone he doesn’t trust. He likes high places and is often seen hanging around rooftops.
General: As a mere human, Vanitas is more often than not significantly less powerful than those around him who are Vampires , at least physically so. While he is demonstrably fit, athletic, and spry, his strength, speed, and endurance are only that of an average human being and no more. The exception is the rate at which he heals from injuries, which is accelerated due to Doctor Moreau 's experimentation. [4] To compensate for his generally inferior physical strength, Vanitas is extremely sharp, clever, and resourceful in battle. He can analyze situations and come up with appropriate solutions and counterattacks very fast, even in the middle of a dangerous battle. He makes use of every resource available to him and is not afraid to use underhanded tactics, to the dismay of those around him. [6]
Weapons: Vanitas's main weapons are a pair of knives whose hilts are rigged with wires. In addition, stored in some pockets on his belt are various "cheaters' implements" which he uses both in and out of battle. He has a tendency to try and keep his weapons and tools hidden, to allow himself the additional element of surprise should he need it, adding to his devious trickster-like fighting style. [5] He is also skilled in gathering information about his enemies and putting that to use in battle against them. [7] He favors being prepared and constantly having the upper hand against his enemies.
Chasseur Training: Vanitas's proficiency in combat seems to have originated from his training as a Chasseur. In addition to his combat abilities and weapons training, his brief time with the Chasseurs taught him in great detail the methods of fighting a Vampire. He knows that, as their eyes are the conduit with which they can access and rewrite the World Formula , the first step is to aim for a Vampire's eyes. [8] He has utilized this knowledge not only against Vampires he's attacked [2] but also against Chasseurs who have attacked him. [9] He also, through unknown means, has access to the drugs Chasseurs use to boost their physical abilities. He only uses them in the rare scenario where he has no choice but to fight a Vampire to the death. [10]
The Book of Vanitas : The main source of Vanitas's power is the Book of Vanitas and his control over it. The main method in which he uses the Book is in healing curse-bearers with what he calls an "Inverse Operation" ( 逆 ( ぎゃく ) 演 ( えん ) 算 ( ざん ) , Gyaku Enzan ). Contrary to Vampires' common belief and fears about the curse of the Blue Moon and the related Book, Vanitas uses the Book to interfere with True Names and heal them, extracting the Maladies that warp them into Malnomen . [1] He can also, before doing so, use the Book to identify exactly what Malnomen it is, though just as often Vanitas can name said Malnomen at the top of his head. This inverse operation requires a high amount of proficiency from the user, as the only other to own a Book of Vanitas cannot interfere with True Names on such a level. [11] On rare occasions the Malnomen will be too strong for him to heal on his own, and he will require the curse-bearer in question to reject it of their own volition and call upon the power of his Mark of Possession to complete the operation. [12]
Vanitas does not only use the Book for saving however, it is also his main weapon in battle. As the Book of Vanitas is able to rewrite the World Formula at will, he can use it to a variety of purposes. He can stun Vampires and render them immobile for a short period of time, [13] though a Vampire strong enough may be able to gain mobility sooner. [6] He can also interfere with Astermite , which allows him to manipulate automatons to do his bidding, go haywire, [14] even explode at his will. [15]
Menial: Aside from combat, Vanitas also has a number of skills in other areas of expertise. Despite his status as a doctor being largely self-proclaimed, Vanitas has had clear medical training and experience, likely from being raised by his doctor of a father. [2] He knows how to perform first aid, how to treat poisons, [16] and carries various medicines around with him. [5] He also knows a number of other practical skills, including how to cook, how to clean, [2] and has various knowledge about French history and culture, [17] even minor trivia such as different apple desserts. [18] He is familiar with the Latin language, likely the result of both his upbringing in the Church and his medical knowledge.

Too many companies are failing to innovate. One reason, say the authors, is the polarized approach companies take to innovation. At one end of the spectrum, corporate R&D efforts tend to focus on product refreshes and incremental line upgrades that generate modest growth for lower risk. At the other end, venture capitalists favor high-risk “transformational” innovations that seek to upend industries and generate outsize returns. But there’s a better, middle, way.
This article presents the growth driver model, a framework that partners corporations with outside investors to identify and develop innovation opportunities, drawing on corporate resources and talent and externally recruited entrepreneurs. The authors illustrate the model with a detailed case study of how it revived innovation at Cordis, a large medical technology device maker.
Forget disruption and incrementalism. Here’s how to develop high-growth products in slow-growth companies.
The problem.
All too many companies, large and small, are failing to innovate. As a result, problems remain unsolved, technologies aren’t invented, and jobs go uncreated. Lost productivity cost the U.S. economy more than $10 trillion between 2006 and 2018.
Companies take a polarized approach to innovation. Corporate R&D efforts focus on safe product refreshes and incremental line upgrades; venture capitalists favor funding high-risk, high-return and often disruptive innovations, anticipating that returns from the few successes will compensate for the investments in failures.
Exploit the space in the middle through a growth driver model that partners corporations with outside investors to identify and develop innovation opportunities, drawing on corporate resources and talent and externally recruited entrepreneurs.
An innovation crisis is brewing in the United States: Too many firms, both large and small, are failing to innovate. As a result, problems remain unsolved, technologies are never invented, and meaningful jobs go uncreated. According to one estimate, lost productivity cost the economy more than $10 trillion between 2006 and 2018, roughly equivalent to $95,000 per U.S. worker.

OEM challenges | ||
Design | Remanufacturing offers undeniable benefits, but several hurdles remain including poor initial design, lack of leadership support and strategic integration, challenges in promoting, and creating market demand for remanufactured products. The study identifies “lack of resources for research and development (R&D) and information systems/data for product remanufacturing” as the most influential barrier. This highlights the need for increased investment in R&D specific to footwear machinery remanufacturing. Developing efficient disassembly processes, establishing standardized component lifecycles, and creating databases of remanufacturing data are crucial. | [ ] |
This paper examines how design management can bridge the gap between the potential of DfR (Design for Remanufacturing) for a circular economy and its actual implementation. By emphasizing company-wide benefits and integrating DfR with early design stages, design management can unlock DfR adoption across material-intensive industries. | [ ]
Remanufacturing, a sustainable approach to product lifecycles, faces challenges due to a lack of knowledge in DfR (Design for Remanufacturing). This is particularly true for components not designed for disassembly or made from less durable materials like plastics and rubber, which significantly impact remanufacturing feasibility. | [ ]
Process | Product variety creates complexity in remanufacturing due to the unpredictable quality of returned products. This complexity discourages multi-product remanufacturing and steers existing research towards standardization strategies like Product Family Design (PFD) and modularity for smoother circular supply chains. | [ ] |
Several factors hinder DfR integration: poor communication in design teams, lack of DfR focus, and non-standard parts with limited availability and long lead times. These issues create delays and unnecessary operations during remanufacturing. Seven lean manufacturing principles are potential solutions to tackle these remanufacturing challenges and achieve shorter lead times: standard operation, continuous flow, Kanban, teamwork, factory layout for continuous flow, employee cross-training and learning through problem solving, and supplier partnership. | [ ]
High product variety, once praised for customers, is now seen as harming profits due to complexities in recycling, remanufacturing, and resale. Closed-loop supply chains, considering both production and end-of-life processes, are emerging to address this challenge. | [ ]
Capability | This study highlights eight critical factors for successful OEM remanufacturing: acquiring cores, managing reverse logistics, securing skilled labor, developing appropriate facilities and processes, designing for remanufacturing, gathering market intelligence, and implementing effective planning and control. | [ ] |
Focusing on Thailand’s auto parts industry, this study reveals business feasibility as the key driver for remanufacturing, with mature products being most suitable. While skilled labor and technical expertise are important, environmental factors have less influence. This emphasizes the importance of both a company’s capabilities and the product’s fit for remanufacturing. | [ ]
Respondents in this study were more optimistic about overcoming market and technology challenges (lack of knowledge, technology) within 5–10 years compared to core availability (volume, quality) issues. Additional concerns include increased management costs from mixed-brand cores, negative market influences, and competition from low-quality, uncertified repairs. | [ ]
Logistics | This case study presented a model for optimizing reverse logistics for large appliances in the UAE. Prioritizing inspection centers and remanufacturing plants over in-house fleets maximizes profitability. The model can be particularly beneficial for companies with extensive transportation needs, potentially suggesting a gradual shift towards in-house systems as businesses grow. | [ ] |
A study of the US firms reveals a significant challenge: the high cost of returns often exceeds product value. Despite the cost challenges, managers generally express satisfaction with their companies’ reverse logistics operations. | [ ]
This framework considers not just initial purchase costs, but also the often-overlooked impact of reverse logistics on the total cost of ownership (TCO). Reverse logistics, the process of returning products, includes costs like product returns and end-of-life management, and is crucial for a complete cost assessment. | [ ]
Market cannibalization | Consumer preference for new products and the need for remanufactured goods to be demonstrably cheaper hinder their adoption. For remanufacturing to be truly sustainable, it must be both environmentally and economically sound, requiring enterprises to prioritize profitability throughout the process. | [ ] |
This study explores strategies to overcome challenges in selling remanufactured products. Targeting new market segments with lower price points, full warranties, and rebate systems is suggested. Developing new sales channels and strategic partnerships with receptive clients and public entities are also seen as crucial for success. | [ ]
Remanufactured products challenge traditional demand management. Unlike products with distinct features, they compete directly with new versions, but are perceived as inferior. This “cannibalization” effect can lead to lost sales for both new and remanufactured goods. | [ ]
Quality assurance | This research proposes a blockchain-based certification tool to address consumer concerns about refurbished products. The tool provides transparent and traceable information on a product’s life cycle and components, along with verifiable certificates. This enhanced visibility and trust can promote a more widespread circular economy. | [ ] |
Consumer doubts about remanufactured product quality hinder market acceptance. Credible certifications set strict guidelines, mitigating these concerns and building trust, ultimately promoting wider adoption of remanufactured goods. | [ ]
While remanufacturing offers a solution, consumer perception often views remanufactured products as inferior. The study explores the potential of a comprehensive, quality-focused labelling scheme for remanufactured products in Sweden to address the challenge and promote method adoption. | [ ]
End-user challenges | ||
Price sensitivity | This study examines optimal remanufacturing strategies for modular products. It considers offering new, partially remanufactured (combining new and used modules), and fully remanufactured products. The best strategy depends on production costs for remanufactured options and the prevalence of environmentally conscious consumers in the market. | [ ] |
The research focuses on optimizing pricing and remanufacturing decisions for manufacturers offering both new and remanufactured products, considering consumer perception of these products as distinct. The proposed model develops pricing strategies for both new and differentiated remanufactured products, addressing the challenge of demand cannibalization. | [ ]
This study investigates optimal pricing for new and remanufactured products. Surprisingly, the research suggests that OEMs should raise prices on new products when remanufactured options enter the market. This strategy, based on a consumer preference model, can help mitigate lost sales (cannibalization) and potentially increase profits, even in competitive environments. | [ ]
Uncertainty about quality | This research introduces a novel model for evaluating remanufactured product quality. Inspired by Taguchi’s quality principles, it analyzes how defects in parts and assemblies affect overall function and consumer perception. The model even includes a neural network to adapt to evolving markets and technologies. This tool can empower businesses to enhance quality, address consumer doubts, and ultimately foster a thriving high-quality remanufacturing industry. | [ ] |
This study highlights the importance of quality, reliability, maintenance, and warranty in reverse logistics to maximize the lifespan of recovered products. Reliability is analyzed through remaining useful life estimation, reusability, maintenance strategies, and cost minimization. Quality is assessed through factors like product acquisition, testing, reusability for remanufacturing, overall profitability, and ultimately the way it impacts reliability. | [ ]
Remanufacturing offers an efficient way to extend product life and conserve resources. Despite its widespread adoption across various industries, a consistent international standard for remanufactured product quality is lacking. The study compares the quality management and certification systems of major countries, with a focus on Korea and China. | [ ]
Information asymmetry | This study examines a challenge in outsourcing used product collection for remanufacturing. When OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) are unsure of a third-party collector’s (3PR) efficiency (how many products they collect), an information gap arises. This can lead to lower collection volumes and potentially force OEMs to reduce new product production to avoid remanufacturing supply shortage. | [ ] |
This research tackles the issue of potential cost misreporting by third-party remanufacturers (3PRs) in an outsourced collection system. It uses an evolutionary game approach to analyze outsourcing strategies and find the most sustainable option in the long run. Interestingly, the study suggests that information sharing strategies can lead to positive economic, social, and environmental outcomes, but only under specific conditions. | [ ]
This study explores competition between manufacturers (OEMs) and third-party remanufacturers (TPRs) when remanufacturing costs are unclear. Due to this uncertainty, OEMs cannot verify TPR costs. The research analyzes scenarios where TPRs share cost information, revealing that under specific conditions, this transparency benefits TPRs by enabling better production planning and avoiding over- or underproduction. | [ ]
Financing difficulties | Despite government subsidies, operating Closed-Loop Supply Chains (CLSCs) requires substantial investments. The recent economic downturn further intensifies funding challenges. Understanding effective CLSC financing strategies is crucial for ensuring their long-term viability. | [ ] |
The study investigates financing options for remanufacturers facing financial constraints in a Trade-Old-for-Remanufactured (TOR) supply chain. Two financing methods are explored: bank financing (BF) and retailer financing (RF). Under the same level of government subsidy, the remanufacturer achieves higher profits with RF compared to BF. | [ ]
To accurately assess the viability of remanufacturing, decision-makers must understand its economic implications, including analyzing factors influencing operational costs. Leveraging existing resources proves crucial for cost reduction, as investments in new facilities, equipment, and personnel can significantly increase costs and potentially render remanufacturing unappealing. | [ ] |
