How to Structure Children’s Church in 6 Easy Steps
This post may contain affiliate links. You pay the same and I get a small commission. Yay! (Please see my/our full disclosure for further information.)
We’re moving! I am splitting up the church lessons and the music lessons! You can continue reading this post, but future posts will be housed on BeccasBibleClass.com
Kids need structure.
All kids need structure. The less they seem to want it, the more they need it.
Structure is the key to running your Children’s Church (or Sunday School or Awanas or whatever) smoothly.
What I mean by that is that you need a plan. You need to have an idea of what you want to do when, so that you can manage time well and get everything done. You need to make a plan, and then follow it.
Think about how church normally runs. At my church, the order is always songs, offering, announcements, sermon, alter call. If we have baptisms or baby dedications, they are thrown into the “announcements” category. It is not always the same, but there is a plan. There is a structure.
Your Children’s Church needs that too!
I will never forget the first time I wrote on the board what we were doing for the day. I didn’t change the order we did. I didn’t add anything new. But the kids knew what was coming, so they were better prepared.
Now we just used the same structure every week, so I don’t write it down on the board, but they know what’s coming next.
Also: The Beginner’s Guide to Children’s Church
1. think about what you want to do.
Think in categories. Your activities may include (but are not limited to)
- Song or worship
- Coloring sheets
- Bathroom break
In my class we do:
- Upbeat song and dance
- Game/craft/time filler
2. Now give everything a time value
It may not always be the same, but give it an idea. Here’s mine:
- Upbeat song and dance (10 min)
- 2 games (25 min)
- Bathroom break (15 min)
- Worship (20 min)
- Lesson (20 min)
- Game/craft/time filler (however long until parents show up)
Now, this is not the whole story. Sometimes things take longer or shorter. Sometimes you have to stop and remind the kids about what is appropriate and not. But this is the basic idea of how I structure
I also made the decision to start my class late because a lot of people at my church come consistently late. It bugs me when I have to explain something for the fourth time because are straggling. So I give them a little bit of extra free time at the beginning and save myself the annoyance.
After you decide what you want to do, decide what is feasible. For example, I just put down my desired times, and then I added five minutes to “games”, “bathroom”, and “worship” because I realized that that was more truthful.
3. Change what you don’t like
Now is your time to change things. Prefer if one part was longer? Hate that something doesn’t’ take long enough? Always finishing early or late? Adjust the schedule!
Need some help getting students to behave? Check out my posts on classroom management here and here .
Also: The Beginner’s Guide to Teaching Children’s Church
4. keep track.
Over the next few weeks, keep track of the time. Then write down how long you actually spend in every category. You may need to adjust it. You may also have to adjust it depending on the week. Remember, this is a guideline, not a hard and fast rule. It’s not the end of the world if something is faster or shorter. Just remember, if you add five minutes to something, you also need to take it away somewhere else.
5. Set up the room to reflect the structure
Do you need separate places for different segments? If you are dancing, you will need a dancing place. For the lesson, do you want chairs? Do you want the kids to sit on the floor? If you do crafts, you will need tables for them.
These are just some things to think about. At the moment, I have chairs in the middle of the room with at least 6-8 feet from the chairs to the walls. This structure works for us, because we have de-emphasized crafts, and there is plenty of room around the chairs to play games. And if the game requires more space, we either push the chairs out of the way or we go outside.
In the past I have had three different “sections”. I had an empty space for dancing and games, two tables with chairs for crafts, and a cozy corner with a lot of pillows for the lesson time.
You may not always do the same thing, and you may not always need the same set up. But room set up is key to your structure.
6. Have a backup plan in place
This is to cover anything that goes wrong. If church suddenly runs half an hour longer than usual, what will you do? If your lesson is significantly shorter than anticipated, what do you do? If the person in charge of games doesn’t show up, what do you do? If you are supposed to go outside and it is raining, what do you do?
I suggest keeping a few extra activities handy. Good ideas include:
- Dance videos like these
- Games that require little set up
- Veggie tales movies
- Books you can read
Having just a few ideas, even if they are not prepared, will help you in a pinch. Part of your structure is your back up plan.
Back up plans make us flexible.
So those are my steps to structuring Children’s Church (or Sunday School, or Awanas, or whatever). Having a structure or schedule in place will help the kids, but will also take a lot of the pressure off of you! If you know that you only need to come up with 20 minutes’ worth of lesson because your craft will take just as long, then you will be less stressed! And don’t forget your back up plan to really help you be less stressed!
Still not sure about your Christmas Program? Check out this post to help you decide what to do!
How do you structure your children’s church are there any points that i missed let me know in the comments (bonus: put a picture of your children’s church or sunday school room in the comments and let us know how it effects your class.).
Happy Teaching!

I needed this, as I’m building a children’s ministry from the ground up. Thank you!!!!
Good luck! It can be daunting, but it’s worth it!
I love that tent corner. How did you suspend the fabric? We have bean bags and I’d love to do a story/conversation corner like this for our junior class room.
Honestly, it’s been a LONG time but I believe it was just a thin white rope that went through the ceiling tiles
I love this thank you. Do you happen to have information on how to develop a year long ministry calendar?
Hi! I don’t, but that is an interesting idea I may look into, although it will be on the new site beccasbibleclass.com

10 Creative Children’s Sermons for Church
- by Pastor George Hendricks
- July 23, 2023 July 11, 2024
Children’s sermons are an important part of church services, providing an opportunity to engage and teach young minds about biblical lessons and core Christian values. In this article, we will explore ten creative children’s sermons that can capture the attention and imagination of kids in church, fostering their spiritual growth and building a strong foundation of faith. These sermons incorporate various methods, such as interactive elements, visuals, stories, and age-appropriate teaching techniques, making church services exciting and meaningful for children.
Engaging and Interactive Children’s Sermons for Church
One effective way to engage children during a sermon is to incorporate interactive elements. For example, you can use object lessons where children are invited to participate and experience the message hands-on. By involving children in the sermon, they become active participants in their own learning, which helps them grasp and remember the lesson more effectively. Additionally, interactive sermons can provide opportunities for children to ask questions, share their thoughts and experiences, and deepen their understanding of the biblical principles being taught.
Furthermore, incorporating multimedia elements can also enhance the engagement and interactivity of children’s sermons. Utilizing videos, images, and audio clips can capture children’s attention and make the sermon more relatable and memorable. For instance, showing a short video clip that illustrates the main message or using visual aids to depict biblical stories can help children visualize and connect with the sermon content on a deeper level. By incorporating multimedia, children’s sermons can create a multi-sensory experience that caters to different learning styles and keeps children actively engaged throughout the service.

Children's Sermon: Creation: And It Was Very Good (Genesis 1)
Hi kids! Today we're going to talk about creation.
It’s interesting to look at a globe of the earth. Can you find where we live on the globe? (Pass the beach ball to a child.)
The earth keeps on spinning around and around as it has ever since it was created. The very first words in the Bible tell us that "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." Then the Bible goes on to tell about God's creation. (Instruct kids to pass the globe beach ball to others.)
The first thing God created was light. The Bible tells us that God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. And God said... (Have all kids say, “It was good.” Instruct kids to pass the globe beach ball to others.)
Then God said, "There needs to be a space to separate the waters of the heavens from the waters on the earth." So God made a space to separate the earth from the heavens. He called it "sky." And God said... (Have all kids say, “It was good.” Instruct kids to pass the globe beach ball to others.)
Next, God brought all the waters of the earth together to make the oceans and the seas and to create dry land between them. Then He covered the dry land with flowers, trees, and grass. And God said... (Have all kids say, “It was good.” Instruct kids to pass the globe beach ball to others.)
God paused, looked at the beautiful trees and flowers and said... (Have all kids say, “It was good.”) Then He continued His creation. (Instruct kids to pass the globe beach ball to others.)
He created the sun, moon, and stars. They were beautiful! God looked at them, and again He said... (Have all kids say, “It was good.” Instruct kids to pass the globe beach ball to others.)
Then God created the birds and fish. He blessed them and told them to multiply so that the sea would be filled with fish of all shapes and sizes and the air would be filled with beautiful birds. God looked at them, smiled, and said..." (Have all kids say, “It was good.” Instruct kids to pass the globe beach ball to others.)
Finally, God made the animals. Tall, skinny giraffes and furry little squirrels. He made cuddly little kittens and big, ferocious lions -- animals of every kind. Then God made man and woman. The Bible says He made people to be like Him and He put them in charge of all that He had created -- the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and every living creature. And God said… (Have all kids say, “It was good.” Instruct kids to pass the globe beach ball to others.)
When God had finished, He looked at all that He had created and He said, "That is VERY GOOD!" (Have all kids say, “It was very good.” Instruct the kids to pass the beach ball back to you.)
God we thank you that you alone are Creator. You are powerful and so creative. Thank you for making us in your image and making all things very good.

3 New Gospel Presentations for Your Children’s Ministry Classroom
Published: January 15, 2021
These 3 new gospel presentations are fun ways to share the gospel in your children’s ministry that will really stick with kids.
Gospel Presentation: All Clear
Fill three clear plastic bottles with 8 to 10 ounces of water. Add a small amount of liquid bleach to one of the bottles. (Keep out of the children’s reach.) You’ll also need red and blue food coloring and a clear pitcher or jar to hold the water from all three bottles.
Drop four drops of blue food coloring into one bottle of plain water. Say: When Jesus came into our world as a baby, he had to leave his home in heaven. We often think of heaven as being up above the blue skies. Drop four drops of red coloring into the second bottle of plain water.
Say: When Jesus grew up, he suffered and died on a cross.
- What did soldiers put on Jesus’ head? (A crown of thorns)
- What did they put through his hands and feet? (Nails)
- Do you think Jesus bled like you have when you’ve hurt yourself?
Say: Red reminds us of the blood Jesus bled and how much he hurt. Pour the two bottles at once into the large pitcher or jar.
Washing Our Sins Away
Say: Purple reminds us that Jesus had to leave heaven, come to our world, and become a person like us so he could shed his blood to take away our sins. When Jesus died on the cross, had he done anything wrong? No. Jesus was perfect. He was clear and clean just like our last bottle.
Pour the bleach/water solution into the purple water. Say: Jesus never sinned. Jesus died on the cross because he loves each of us so much. One day, we’ll go to heaven to be with Jesus. Our blue water reminds us of that. Let’s sing “Jesus Loves Me.” As we sing, keep your eyes on our blue water. It’ll become clear.
At the end of the song, say: J esus cleanses us from all sin. Jesus loves us so much that he was willing to leave his home in heaven and die on a cross for us. What a wonderful Savior! Let’s pray and thank him.
Dear Jesus, thank you for leaving your home in heaven to die on a cross so that we could live in heaven with you. We love you, Jesus. Amen.

Gospel Presentation: Now You See It!
Here’s an illusion you can create to help children understand new life in Christ.
Make a tube by using two empty store-bought icing containers, a sturdy file folder, and Con-Tact paper with a print that’s the same from all directions, such as polka dots or stripes. Cover the file folder with the Con-Tact paper. Place the icing containers bottom to bottom. Then wrap and glue the decorated file folder around them. The container openings will be the ends of the tube. Glue a fake caterpillar in one end and a fake butterfly in the other end.
At the butterfly end of the tube, mark a small symbol visible only to you so you can tell which end is which.
Show the children the end with the caterpillar. Say: Before we place our faith in Jesus, we are just like an ugly old caterpillar. Sin in our lives keeps us from being the beautiful butterflies God wants us to be.
Divert kids’ attention by asking a child to show the audience the pretty scarf you’re going to drape over the tube.
As people watch the child, turn the tube around. Cover the tube with the scarf. Have someone read aloud 2 Corinthians 5:17 .
Then pull off the scarf and show everyone the beautiful butterfly in the other end. Say: The caterpillar changing into a butterfly reminds me of how Jesus changes us when we follow him. Jesus is our Savior. When we believe in Jesus, we become alive again like the butterfly. It’s like we’re born a second time to live eternally with God in heaven.

Gospel Presentation: Repentance Run
Use this gospel presentation outside, in a gym, or in the largest room in your church. Have kids line up at one end of the room while you stand at the other end. Say: On “go,” walk toward me. When I yell “repent,” turn around and walk the other way. Again, when I yell “repent,” turn around and walk the other way. Ready? Go!
Play for up to five minutes or until children are wearing down. Then gather everyone together and ask:
- What did you have to do when I yelled “repent”?
Say: To repent means to turn around and go the other way.
Read aloud Mark 1:14-15 . Ask:
- What does Jesus want us to do?
- Which kinds of things do people need to turn away from?
- What does Jesus say we need to do after we repent?
Read aloud Acts 3:19-20 .
- According to these verses, what happens when we repent and return to God?
- Is there anything you need to repent from so you can turn to Jesus in faith?
Allow children time to respond; then pray for and with each child.

PowerPoint Bible Lessons for Kids
Bible lesson & powerpoint about animals.
We created this lesson plan for a stuffed-animal theme night at our church. Each child was allowed to bring their favorite toy pet. The lesson began with puppet skit improvisation that to introduced the theme, Bible verses, and some random tips for safety with animals. The main lesson is contained in the PowerPoint below. Just for fun, I included about 15 extra slides with cute or remarkable animal photos. After each one I would say something like,

25 Church Presentation Tips, Tricks, and Hacks (Part One)
Your church presentation ties the entire service together. If handled correctly, it moves the service from one element to the next by offering seamless transitions. This keeps the congregation focused and moving in the same direction. Using presentations during the sermon provides another avenue for information to make an impact on people’s lives. They’re not just hearing the word, they get to read along and visually connect to the most crucial parts of the message. Studies show that people retain more information when they’re able to see it as well as hearing it.
The key to a good presentation
The presentation should serve as an almost invisible tour guide that leads you through the proceedings pointing out areas of interest. You know you have a great presentation when no one is thinking about the presentation. Their attention is being drawn toward God and his Word. The moment that you’ve drawn attention to the presentation itself, it’s usually because people are being distracted by an overbearing element or some kind of mistake. When you’re putting together a presentation, your ultimate goal is to facilitate worship and weed out distractions. Creating presentations that move the sermon along without getting in the way requires things like:
Planning Preparation Teamwork Communication
It doesn’t just happen on accident! You need to constantly learn and discover new ways to create and execute your church presentations with excellence. We figure you shouldn’t have to learn it all by trial and error. So we asked more than 5,000 pastors, worship leaders, and tech teams to give us their top tips, tricks, and hacks to creating and managing their presentations. Here are some the best responses we received.
First things first 1. “Pray for guidance, support, and inspiration.”—Mary, Grace and Peace Lutheran Church
It’s important for the tech team to see themselves as a ministry first. This will help them remember that there aren’t any unspiritual tasks. Creating a script for Sunday morning’s presentation is just as spiritually significant as any other task. It should be bathed in prayer and approached as a sacred responsibility.
Do your research 2. “Know the compatibilities for your church’s hardware and programs and work from within that understanding.”—John, First Baptist Church
This is good advice for anyone using software or hardware. I’m always surprised when churches are using expensive programs or equipment, but are only using the smallest percentage of its capabilities. So bust out those manuals and play those training videos. You might be surprised at some of the things you didn’t know you were able to do—and the time and money you save.
3. “Do the research needed to ensure that equipment like projectors works in your space. You need to know what the maximum distance from the screen is. You need to know what formats the projector will accept. Invest in the highest quality cables you can. Recognize the difference between infrastructure and replaceables. If you have a cable run that is nearly impossible, you really want to make sure that when you pull those cables, that you won’t be doing it again soon. Five to ten years would be a good time frame. It is also a good plan to stay with tested technology.”—Anthony, Zion Grace UMC
Anthony’s right; there is no substitute for doing your research. It’s important that you’re thinking long term when it comes to making decisions about equipment purchases. If you need to invest in a professional to come in to advise you on what you need now and what’s going to be the most cost efficient, long term investment, it’s worth it! In the long run, too many churches end up spending extra dollars in order to save a couple dimes.
4. “Do you know of other churches in your area who are using similar equipment and software? Ask if you can send someone to see how they use it.”—Anonymous
Believe it or not, most church tech teams would be happy to show you how they’re managing their equipment. Not only is this an opportunity to discover tricks and systems you’ve never thought of, but it can also go a long way towards building relationships between local churches. Make sure you’re opening your church up to others as well.
5. “Maintain a spare supply of necessary items, (batteries, remote controls, bulbs for projectors, tie wraps, extension cords—items you don’t think of until you need them).”—Stan, Valley Baptist Church
Put someone in charge of maintaining a list of all the items the tech team needs, and then make sure that you have back-ups for those items. It’s amazing the chaos that can ensue for want of a 9-volt battery! Go to the free download.
Building a good team 6. “Don’t assume that because a person is young, they automatically are knowledgeable and interested in being on a tech team.”—Micah, Living Branch Lutheran Church
Micah’s right. Don’t profile!
7. “‘Teching’ during worship services is a volunteer position that can attract people who otherwise don’t volunteer for much, since it can seem less intimidating.”—Micah, Living Branch Lutheran Church
I have led worship for nearly 25 years, and I have found the tech team to be a haven time and time again for super intelligent and introverted people who really want to serve the church but are unsure about where they fit. So many other ministries require volunteers to be the center of attention if they’re going to exercise thought and responsibility. Presentation tech is different: it’s a huge responsibility, but not a lot of attention. I’ve watched people get brought onto church tech teams and discover their passion for the church explode.
8. “Take the time to practice using all the features of the software that your tech team uses. During a worship service should not be the only time a tech team member uses the church hardware/software.”—Darwin, Jericho Ridge Community Church
9. “Train your volunteers how to fix script errors – in lyrics, bible verses, readings, etc.”—Jane
Training needs to include regular supervised practice taking care of all of the tech team’s tasks. Your volunteers should know how to put together presentations, how to edit them, and how to take care of potential problems. They need to see troubleshooting happening in a real-time environment. The more exposure they get to the software—especially in a safe, controlled but live environment—the more confident they’ll be.
10. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help.”—Sharmyn
One of the best ways to get the most out of your church’s presentation tools is to ask the vendor for help directly. You’ll learn how to overcome obstacles, and you’ll get a feel for how the providers are thinking about your church’s presentations. Shameless plug: MediaShout prides itself on providing the very best support, when you need it most. To that end, we’re one of the only church presentation software companies with live support on Sundays when it’s most critical. Jump to the free download.
Be mindful of your congregation 11. “The biggest challenge is having an ‘inclusive’ worship experience where most people are comfortable, and accepting of the whole worship experience. Media presentations must be tasteful, and assist the flow of the worship experience with smooth transitions. Catering to one segment of worshipers in media style, while excluding others, or catering to a select group will cause more problems. Be tasteful, and include media in a way that enhances the experience, not in a way that draws attention to itself.”—Alan, First Baptist Church, Anderson
12. “Remember, this isn’t entertainment. You want to enhance and not overpower or distract from the service.”—Mary, Grace and Peace Lutheran Church
We’ve come a long way since the days of the static PowerPoint presentation. But we need to always remember that the presentation serves the saints. Make sure your animations and transitions are used tastefully and aren’t distracting from the service.
13. “Just about every hymn we sing is already in our hymnals so initially we saw no need to put the lyrics on the screens. After we tried it a couple times we got a very positive response from some of the elderly members of the congregation. It turns out they won’t admit that they need reading glasses to read the hymnals (or worship programs) but they can still see things in the distance (like our LCD monitors). So the point is you should put everything on the screens that people need to read.”—Kirby, Asbury United Methodist Church
14. “Become familiar to your congregations likes and dislikes in presentations.”—Kenny, First Baptist Church, Gordonsville
When you’re working on your presentations, think about how your choices affect the people you serve. Is your background image too loud? Is your font readable everywhere in the sanctuary? Does your slide have too many words on it? It’s decisions like this that can greatly affect your church’s worship experience. Jump to the free download.
Prioritize communication between the pastor and tech team 15. “Give the operator plenty of time to build the script. Waiting until the last minute to give them your notes and other items only frustrates the operators. They should want it to look smooth and professional, and this is hard to accomplish in a rush.”—Chris, West Ward Church of God
16. “[Pastors] Make sure to include your media team when you are making changes to the order. Watch the slides and stop and give direction directly to the person running the slides so that they can make notes or take time after practice to make changes with them.”—Patti, The Bridge, Stockton
17. “Our pastor writes up a transcript every week and follows along pretty closely to it. I have him highlight the areas in his teaching that are slides to be fired so my volunteers can easily see what’s coming up next. Then I encourage my pastor that if he feels led to go ‘off script’ then make sure he references the next slide he wants clearly.”—Mikey, The Jar Community Church
18. “Nothing says ‘lack of unity’ like a disjointed worship service, but that is easily avoided by making sure that the focus and tone of your messages are accurately conveyed to everyone involved in planning the service. Drive success by leading your teams in the direction which God leads you.”—Greg, Crossroads Church of Cleburne
Pastors, there was a time when you could do your Sunday sermon prep in a vacuum. But it’s getting harder and harder to get away with putting sermons together at the last minute. The truth is that a lot of what passes for “waiting for inspiration” is simply procrastination. As you’re putting your sermons together, open another document and take notes relating to the presentation. The more clearly you can communicate your intentions, the better it is for everyone. Get that information to your tech team as early as possible so that they have time to put together the best presentation possible. Ultimately, it’s going to make your sermon even better.
19. “[Pastors] Stuff happens that’s outside the tech team’s control. If you know it’s going on, so does the congregation. Don’t draw a lot of attention to it, and allow the tech team to work it out.”—Anonymous
I have to admit that this one made me laugh. We’ve all seen this one happen a million times. As soon as there’s a problem with the sound or presentation, no matter who’s fault it is, everyone starts looking at the tech booth. Don’t worry—THEY KNOW! If you’re on the stage and run into a technical difficulty, give it some time for the tech team to work it out before you stop everything and draw attention to it.
20. “[When getting all the service information] Ask questions. Who, what, when, where, why – it works in journalism, and it works in planning a service.”—Jane
You can’t always count on everyone to get you all the information you need to put the presentation together. So make sure you’re actively, and not passively, looking at the information you receive. Ask questions about how it’s going to come together and where the transitions are. If you ask good enough questions, you can usually draw out any of the missing information.
21. “[Pastors] Support your media team’s vision. It’s their passion and calling, and their vision needs to be taken seriously.”—David, Bridge of Life Community Church
The tech team is a legitimate ministry that facilitates the entire worship service. It’s critical that they’re empowered to create a vision for spiritual and operational success—and that their vision is supported by leadership. Jump to the free download.
Working with the worship team 22. “The presentation team needs to have a good relationship with the worship team and leaders.”—Anthony, Zion Grace UMC
23. “Presentation operators should consider themselves part of the Worship Team. Just like the guitar player practices their part before rehearsing with the whole group, the presentation operator should do the same—listen to music, understand the differences in verses and choruses, and know how their ‘instrument’ is part of the overall worship.” —Aaron, Thompson Station Church-Columbia
24. “Have your media/PC team attend Praise & Worship practice! This will help with a smooth presentation.”—Patrick, Salvation Army San Diego Citadel
25. “When it comes to songs, I think it’s a good idea to have your media volunteers listen to the worship songs being played so they know how fast the words are sung, they can hear some of the transitions in the song which can give them a heads up if the worship leader is changing up the order of the song. I also think it’s a great idea if possible to have the media volunteers run through the songs during worship practice.”—Mikey, The Jar Community Church
The team creating and managing the presentations needs to work synergistically with all of the ministry teams in order to create the best service possible. But their success is probably most closely linked to how integrated they are in the worship team. Their understanding of the worship music, the worship leader’s leadership style, and the team’s

Sacraments of the Church
Sacraments of christian initiation.
The three sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders confer, in addition to grace, a sacramental character or "seal" by which the Christian shares in Christ's priesthood and is made a member of the Church according to different states and functions. This configuration to Christ and to the Church, brought about by the Spirit, is indelible, it remains for ever in the Christian as a positive disposition for grace, a promise and guarantee of divine protection, and as a vocation to divine worship and to the service of the Church. Therefore these sacraments can never be repeated. (CCC #1121)
