David Goggins: What Drives You to Greatness?

David Goggins: What Drives You to Greatness?

David goggins - find your greatness.

Ultra-endurance athlete David Goggins talks about his childhood struggles with racism and bullying, and says that when you find what truly drives you, nothing can stop your journey to greatness.

Transcript:

" I got called nigger every day of my life growing up, lived in a small town. The Klan headquarters at that time was about 20 minutes from where I lived. One of the high-ups in the KKK's son sat behind me in two classes, so he called me nigger all the time. Got my first car, they spray painted "Nigger we're going to kill you" on it. I was weighing like 297 pounds. I was just an insecure, scared kid. I had to make a change in my life.

"I was at a all-time low and I wasn't going anywhere, and I was exactly what everybody said I was going to be, which is nothing. The best thing that happened to me, no one helped me. I had to figure out I wasn't going to be a punk kid all my life. The only way I could turn it around was to suffer. I had to build calluses in my brain the same way I build calluses on my hands. I broke the Guinness Book of World Records for pullups a long time ago, but I failed at it twice. I did 67,000 pullups in trying to break this record. To do 4,030 pullups I had to do 67,000 for training for that."

"Wow."

"What I realized is for me to become the man I wanted to become, I saw myself as the weakest person God ever created. I never blamed God for anything he did to me. I wanted to change that to be the hardest man ever created. Am I that? I don't know, but you had to have a goal. My goal when I was sitting there not going to school, being bullied, having no self-esteem, my goal was the only person that's going to turn this person around is me. I was so driven, I'm not going to say motivated because motivation's crap. Motivation comes and goes. When you're driven whatever's in front of you will get destroyed.

"We live in an external world. Everything is you got to see it, touch it, it's external. If you can for the rest of your life live inside of yourself, stop listening to people who are calling you fat, gay, transsexual, nigger, everything that makes no sense. All these insecure people putting their insecurities on you, you got to flush it out. You got to just be whoever the hell God, or whoever the hell you believe in, if you believe in nothing but yourself, I don't care what it is. You got to take everything and throw it away. You have to believe in one thing and that is yourself.

"I'm not saying don't believe in God or what you believe in, but right now for you to find greatness in yourself, you're not going to find it by looking in a book or by even hearing me. I may give you the spark but you've got to go inside yourself to find it. How? That's the question. How are you going to do that? Thicken your skin. Become more of a human being. Don't be afraid of the reflection in the mirror because that's all you can be afraid of. Once you overcome the reflection in the mirror, on the other side is greatness. That's what people don't understand.

"By me running I am callusing my mind. I'm not training for a race. I'm training for life. I'm training for the time when I get that 2:00 in the morning call that my mom is dead or something happens tragic in life, I don't fall apart. I'm training my mind and my body and my spirit so it's all one so I can handle what life is going to throw at me because the life I've lived, it throws a whole bunch at you. If you're not physically and mentally prepared for that you're just going to crumble and you're good for nobody.

"In times of suffering what we do is we forget how hard we really are, because that's what suffering is. Suffering's a test. It's all it is. Suffering is the true test of life. The beauty is remembering this young, dumb, what people called nigger, is now where I'm at today. That is when you finally get to that point for me, it's forever lasting peace. Greatness isn't running 200 miles at a time or doing 4,000 pullups or being a seal. Greatness is whatever the hell you've dreamed of in your own mind. You've got to foresee it. You got to first create this vision in your mind, and then that's when I come into play.

"Once you create this vision in your mind it's how am I going to get there now. We are all great. No matter if you think you're dumb, no matter if you think you're fat, no matter if you are fat, no matter if you've been bullied or no matter if you just got back from Iraq or Afghanistan and you have no legs or your arms or whatever man. We all have greatness. It just you got to find the courage. You got to find the courage to put your Bose headphones on and silence the noise out of this world and to find it."

Formerly Incarcerated Single Mom Passes NY Bar Exam on First Try

According to the American Bar Association, a mere 2% of lawyers are Black women. This Black, formerly incarcerated, single mom is working to change that.

How a Former Felon Turned Her Life Around

Afrika Owes graduates with honors from Hobart & William Smith Colleges.

@afrika.owes/Instagram

Afrika Owes grew up in Harlem in a low-income, single-mother household. A straight-A student, she always dreamed of becoming a lawyer.

Those dreams were derailed, however, when at 17, she traded in her full-ride scholarship at an elite prep school for the slammer.

Arrested and charged with carrying guns for her then-boyfriend , the leader of a notorious Harlem drug gang, she pleaded guilty to felony charges of conspiracy and weapons possession. She was facing twenty-five years to life.

After serving six months on Riker’s Island and thanks to the New York Youthful Offender program, she was given a second chance.

She didn't waste it. During her five years of probation, she finished high school and graduated with honors from Hobart & William Smith Colleges, with a degree in Sociology, and minors in Africana Studies and Public Policy.

"It was never a doubt in my mind that I was going to figure out how I was going to get right back on track." Afrika Owes via People

She more than got "back on track." She rumbled out of the station and went flying off the rails.

In 2017, she was awarded a Fulbright grant where she taught English and founded a Black women’s empowerment group in Cape Town, South Africa.

But she never forgot her dream. She applied to the Fordham University School of Law and was one of the less than 20% of applicants accepted.

And now? Despite overwhelming odds, that dream has officially become a reality.

Viral TikTok Has 3 Million People Cheering and Crying Right Along with Her

@afrika.owes Thank you to my angels, my momma, my grandma. Thank you for my son, my brother, my family and my tribe. I’m beyond happy to join the ranks of the 2% of Black women Attorneys in the U.S. #singlemom #attorney #blackattorney #lawyer

In a now-viral TikTok , Afrika, 30, shares the heart-pounding moment she receives her bar exam results.

Nervously clutching photos of her four-year-old son and late mother and grandmother and with her little brother standing by, Afrika anxiously logs online.

After a couple of tense moments searching for the results, she finds them. Jumping up and down, she yells, "I passed! I passed! I passed! I knew I could do it!"

And promptly bursts into tears.

She overlays the emotional clip with: "POV: You're a formerly incarcerated single mom who passed the bar early on the first try."

She also captions it in part, "Thank you to my angels, my momma, my grandma. Thank you for my son, my brother, my family and my tribe."

Since its posting, it has garnered over 3 million views and nearly 33,000 comments from well-wishers praising her for her incredible achievement.

"Not only that but the NEW YORK BAR EXAM!!!??? FIRST TRY????? oh queen you are UNSTOPPABLE," writes one commenter.

Another writes, "'I knew I could do it' AND DID!"

Even Google got in on it, writing "You're going to accomplish great things."

Not to be outdone, YouTube's official account also commented, "Congratulations! you’re a true inspiration."

In an Instagram post , Afrika shares that she's "happy to join the ranks of the 2% Black women attorneys in the U.S and the less than 1% of formerly incarcerated black attorneys in the U.S."

She also expresses her gratitude for everything that brought her to this very moment.

"Thank you for every tear, every trial, every loss and every failure. Thank you for the wins, the blessings, and accomplishments."

According to the National Conference of Bar Examiners , the pass rate was just 42%.

Afrika graduates in May. She plans to work in tax law at a big law firm and hopes to pursue a judicial clerkship in the future.

Not Letting Your Past Dictate Your Future

Afrika credits her late mom for inspiring her journey.

"Despite our circumstances, she always was an advocate for herself, [and] other people in the community and that was always a skill and a value that was embedded in me," she says. "So I knew I always wanted to go to law school for that reason."

And she believes that this milestone achievement isn't just about her.

"It's not just a win for me but it's a win for all of us." Afrika Owes via Good Morning America

"It's a win for Black women attorneys who only make up less than 2% of the profession. For formerly incarcerated women who, less than 1% obtain graduate degrees. For single mothers. I think it's really important for people to see the image of a Black woman passing the bar with all of...everything I carry. But also know that I'm not carrying it alone."

As hard as she's worked to distance herself from her past and the stigma surrounding ex-convicts, she also believes in the power of personal experience.

She hopes that by sharing her story, people will tear down the barriers that prevent them from viewing their differences as strengths.

"It doesn't matter where you come from. It matters where you're going and how you get here today."

Little Girl's Video on Self-Love Shocks Dad and Goes Viral

Jhovan "Jay" Galberth is a single dad whose parenting style is making jaws drop. The dadfluencer posted a shocking video that his young daughter, Tatum, recorded alone — and her surprising words say everything about how she is being raised.

His no-judgment approach brought a smile to millions of faces, but it also left some questioning the impact of his "let-it-all-out" parenting style.

Her Dad Gave Her 20 Seconds To Say Anything

A new challenge on ParentTok (short for TikTok parent content) is taking the internet by storm, and it's as simple as it is enlightening.

The trend involves parents giving their children 20 seconds in a room alone to say whatever they want, with the parent promising not to get mad. Jay Galberth ( @dadsdoittoo ), tried this challenge with his daughter, Tatum, expecting some silly antics or even a few bad words. Instead, what he got was a heartwarming lesson in self-love and positivity.

After telling Tatum she had 20 seconds, Jay closed the bathroom door and let the camera roll. The toddler's confidence and positivity caught everyone off guard. Rather than using the opportunity to make mischief, Tatum declared herself a "queen," a "superstar," and expressed her love for herself and her intelligence. "I'm beautiful, I'm smart, and I love myself," she proclaimed. Her infectious energy left viewers feeling inspired and energized.

Barbie Gives a Shout-Out: Dad's Viral Video Gets a Glamorous Endorsement

Tatum's self-love-filled monologue was not only an inspiration to viewers but also caught the attention of some significant names. Among them was the official Barbie Instagram account, which left a comment under Jay's video, saying, "And don't you forget it 😉💖."

"I was proud. Seeing the things I instilled into her and hearing her speak the words of affirmation felt good to see." Jay Galberth

This unexpected recognition from the iconic doll brand added a touch of glamour and validation to the already viral video. It also highlighted the broader impact of the message Tatum was sending, which resonated with audiences of all ages. Jay and Tatum's story is a reminder that positivity and confidence, no matter how small the voice, can echo far and wide.

She Learned Self Love From Her Dad

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jhovan Galberth (@movewitjay)

The powerful response to Tatum's words reflects the significant role parents play in shaping their children's self-esteem and sense of self-worth. Jay's dedication to instilling confidence and love in his daughter was evident in her positive words of self-affirmation.

In a world where self-doubt often takes center stage, Tatum's message of self-acceptance serves as a guiding light. Her father's positive influence is a testament to the impact that positive reinforcement and encouragement can have on a child's mindset. It’s not just about the words we say, but the actions we take to build our children's self-esteem and resilience.

"I try my best to motivate my daughter and build her up," he added. "This time she showcased her confidence and intelligence."

Jay Galberth's approach to parenting reminds us that nurturing a child's confidence can lead to a happier, more positive world. When parents shape their children's view of themselves with love and encouragement, they set the foundation for strong, self-assured adults. The viral video serves as a heartwarming reminder to always lift each other up and create a space for positivity and growth.

30+ of the best quotes from David Goggins for when you need a dose of inspiration

You're sure to find strength in these powerful words from the author of "Can't Hurt Me"—the only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Controller, and one of the world's top endurance athletes.

30+ of the best quotes from David Goggins for when you need a dose of inspiration

David Goggins , former Navy SEAL and internationally renowned endurance athlete, certainly has a world of expertise when it comes to strength and perseverance. He’s been well acquainted with pain and adversity—from poverty and abuse in childhood to racism—and both success and failure. Life is not easy, Goggins knows and stresses, but your decisions and your mindset can go a long way towards improving your happiness. So, if you’re looking for a large dose of inspiration or need a little push to get over a proverbial hump, there's no better place to start than with these 30 quotes from Goggins’s bestselling audiobook, Can’t Hurt Me .

"You are in danger of living a life so comfortable and soft that you will die without ever realizing your true potential."

"It's a lot more than mind over matter. It takes relentless self-discipline to schedule suffering into your day, every day."

"Denial is the ultimate comfort zone."

"The most important conversations you’ll ever have are the ones you’ll have with yourself."

"Pain unlocks a secret doorway in the mind, one that leads to both peak performance and beautiful silence."

"Don't stop when you're tired. Stop when you're done."

"Everyone fails sometimes and life isn’t supposed to be fair, much less bend to your every whim."

"You must recognize what you are about to do, highlight what you do not like about it, and spend time visualizing each and every obstacle you can."

"The ticket to victory often comes down to bringing your very best when you feel your worst."

"Most wars are won or lost in our own heads."

"It may be satisfactory, but that's another word for mediocrity."

"Are you an experienced scuba diver? Great, shed your gear, take a deep breath and become a one-hundred-foot free diver. Are you a badass triathlete? Cool, learn how to rock climb. Are you enjoying a wildly successful career? Wonderful, learn a new language or skill. Get a second degree. Always be willing to embrace ignorance and become the dumb fuck in the classroom again, because that is the only way to expand your body of knowledge and body of work. It’s the only way to expand your mind."

"We’re either getting better or we’re getting worse."

"Breaking the shackles and stretching beyond our own perceived limits takes hard fucking work—oftentimes physical work—and when you put yourself on the line, self doubt and pain will greet you with a stinging combination that will buckle your knees."

"Always be ready to adjust, recalibrate, and stay after it to become better, somehow."

"If you want to master the mind and remove your governor, you’ll have to become addicted to hard work. Because passion and obsession, even talent, are only useful tools if you have the work ethic to back them up."

"Most of us sweep our failures and evil secrets under the rug, but when we run into problems, that rug gets lifted up, and our darkness re-emerges, floods our soul, and influences the decisions which determine our character."

"My happiness is my reflection on the suffering during my journey and knowing that I never quit nor was I guided by anybody on this earth."

"A lot of us surround ourselves with people who speak to our desire for comfort. People who would rather treat the pain of our wounds and prevent further injury than help us callous over them and try again. We need to surround ourselves with people who will tell us what we need to hear, not what we want to hear, but at the same time not make us feel we’re up against the impossible."

"My mother was my biggest fan. Whenever I failed in life she was always asking me when and where I would go after it again. She never said, Well, maybe it isn’t meant to be."

"The Buddha famously said that life is suffering. I’m not a Buddhist, but I know what he meant and so do you. To exist in this world, we must contend with humiliation, broken dreams, sadness, and loss. That’s just nature."

"We can’t control all the variables in our lives. It’s about what we do with opportunities revoked or presented to us that determine how a story ends."

"In every failure there is something to be gained, even if it’s only practice for the next test you’ll have to take. Because that next test is coming. That’s a guarantee."

"I knew that the confidence I’d managed to develop didn’t come from a perfect family or God-given talent. It came from personal accountability which brought me self-respect, and self-respect will always light a way forward."

"There is no more time to waste. Hours and days evaporate like creeks in the desert. That’s why it’s okay to be cruel to yourself as long as you realize you’re doing it to become better."

"Be more than motivated, be more than driven, become literally obsessed to the point where people think you're fucking nuts."

"It takes great strength to be vulnerable enough to put your ass on the line, in public, and work toward a dream that feels like it’s slipping away."

"Human beings change through study, habit, and stories... when you’re driven, whatever is in front of you, whether it’s racism, sexism, injuries, divorce, depression, obesity, tragedy, or poverty, becomes fuel for your metamorphosis."

"We all need small sparks, small accomplishments in our lives to fuel the big ones. Think of your small accomplishments as kindling. When you want a bonfire, you don’t start by lighting a big log. You collect some witch’s hair—a small pile of hay or some dry, dead grass. You light that, and then add small sticks and bigger sticks before you feed your tree stump into the blaze. Because it’s the small sparks, which start small fires, that eventually build enough heat to burn the whole fucking forest down."

"The hero is you."

“I don’t stop when I’m tired. I stop when I’m done.” David Goggins

David Goggins | “Quotes” from English Speeches

David Goggins | FULL TRANSCRIPT:

“ Speaker 1

Retired Chief Petty Officer Dave Goggins is well known for his physical and mental toughness and for his practically inhuman level of determination. From barely passing his Navy SEAL physical screening test to becoming one of the world’s best ultra-endurance athletes. And the only person to complete Navy SEAL training Army Ranger School, an Air Force tactical air controller training. David routinely pushes his body to the limits. In 2005, a chopper carrying eight SEALs and eight Army special operations aviators were shot down. Many Navy men who David had personally trained with, touched by their loss. David was determined to find a way to help. Running 135 miles in just under 26 hours, taking first place in the Infinitus 88 K in only 12 hours, and holding the Guinness World Book World record for over 4000 pull-ups in 24 hours all to raise awareness and support for severely wounded warriors and their families. Ladies and gentlemen, it brings a great deal of pleasure to present to you the recipient of the VFW as American as a moored and retired Chief Petty Officer David Goggins.

Americanism Award and citation awarded to Chief Petty Officer David Goggins. United States Navy retired in heartfelt recognition and sincere appreciation of his fervent love of country and his tireless dedication and commitment to supporting America’s veterans and their families. His determination to bring encouragement and hope to the families of America’s fallen service members by pushing his body, mind, and spirit to its limits is a reflection of his resolve, patriotism, and true character, and justly earned him the utmost respect and admiration of the veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. And with this whereof, we have hereunto set our hands and the official seal the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States as 23rd day of July 2018. Approved by the National Council Administration. Signed by Keith Harmon, Commander in Chief. Tested Brian Duffy, Adjutant General.

David Goggins

First off, I’m very humbled to be up here talking to you all today. For a living, I’m a motivational speaker and I speak to thousands of professional athletes from the biggest names to the smallest names. And I saw Doc walk in here with the Congressional Medal of Honor. This was the first time in my life I got nervous to speak in front of a crowd. That said, must I respect this man up here. I was reading about this man back in the day. So, I’d like to thank the VFW very much for giving me this award. It means more than meeting anything I’ve ever received in my entire life. I’d like to thank my grandfather, Sergeant Jack Gardner, who is now deceased. This would be the happiest day of his entire life.

I’d like to thank my mom up here, who would never pick me up… who never pick me up when I fail. She taught me how to get up when I was knocked down. I thank my uncle for always being there for me. And I thank all you are here who fought in these wars. You have no idea how big of a deal it is to me. I was not always this strong guy you see. I went through a lot of hard times in my life to get here today. And a story I’ll tell you with real quick. I tried once to get in the Air Force to be Air Force pararescuemen and I quit for fear of the water. I was 175 pounds. I left the air force four years later at 300 pounds.

I went from 175 to 300 pounds. There’s a long story in there on how that came to be, but I sat around and read a book on the Medal of Honor. In those guys, all I wanted to be was an uncommon man. In my whole life I was not that… much worse than that. There were stories about men like you, Doc, who had the courage to jump on grenades and stuff like that. So I came home one day from working at a job called Ecolab, where I sprayed for cockroaches, made $1,000 a month, weighing 300 pounds, and I got home and watched a show on Discovery Channel of guys carrying boats and logs, Navy SEAL training. And decided to make a change in my life. I called the recruiter up and he asked me these questions. You had to meet a certain… like a certain height and weight limit. I was six foot one and 300 pounds. He laughed at me. Seven other recruiters laughed at me. One recruiter finally said, “come on in, I’m too busy to talk on the phone.” He didn’t know how much I weighed.

I walked in the recruiter’s office, he looked at me and he said, “you’re fat and you’re black”, got someone to be a Navy SEAL. I didn’t know they’d only been 35 African-American Navy SEALs at that time. In over 70 years. He said, I basically had to lose 106 pounds in less than three months because of my age. I was getting too old. I came back three months later, 106 pounds lighter. I… Thank you.

And literally, I spent 18 months going through Buds, which is a six-month program. Went through three whole weeks. That’s where I met Marcus Atwell, Danny Dietz, Michael Murphy, another Medal of Honor winner. I went through hell week with all these guys, real heroes. I am not a hero. I served with real heroes. And from there, I went on to raise over $2 million for special operations Warrior Foundation.

But… I’m going to end with this right here, I have the most respect I can possibly muster up for all of you in this room. I know what it takes to be a combat soldier, and I used to look for courage. I thought courage was a man who won the Medal of Honor. It is! But courage is a man who’s going to put those boots on every single day of his life to go out there and fight for this country where nobody even knows what the hell they’re doing. What the hell they’re at. You do for the man beside you. Thank you.”[/read]
