NCERT Class 6 Maths Solutions Topic-Wise Discussion

Class 6 Maths Chapter 6 has a total of four sections and following is a topic-wise discussion on each of them.

1. Introduction

The chapter of Integers Class 6 NCERT begins with an introduction that includes some examples. It talks about a girl named Sunita who needs 10 bananas for her picnic, but her mother has only 8 of them. Hence, she borrows two from her neighbour. This example further discusses how Sunita needs to return 2 bananas to her neighbour. Few other examples like this present in this chapter introduce the concept of integers to students.

This introduction then further discusses various signs attached to numbers and what they signify.

2. Integers

The second section of this chapter then moves into the discussion of Integers class 6. Students already know about the natural number; in this chapter, they move on to the concept of negative integers.

Use of various figures helps students further to grasp the concept of different numbers like the whole number, natural number, negative number, and integers easily. After that, they learn how to represent different integers with the assistance of a single line.

Ordering of integers follows next, where students learn how to arrange these integers according to their value. With the help of NCERT solutions, students can quickly learn these relatively complex concepts and get a better understanding of it.

3. Addition of Integers

Students must know the concept of how to add Integer Class 6, as it is an essential concept for their exam as well as their daily life. In this chapter, they get to learn it via an interesting example. There is a boy named Mohan, and his house has steps to access both the terrace and godown. Here the steps to the terrace are considered as positive integers and the ones towards the godown are negative integers, and the ground level is zero. In this way, they can learn how to count integers by moving up and down the stairs.

Along with that, there are other examples with dice, tiles and buttons to further simplify this concept. Also, students learn how to add Integers for Class 6 by using a straight line.

4. Subtraction of Integers With the Help of a Number Line

Following the addition, students learn how to subtract Class 6 Maths Integers using a single line. There are different methods to this process, which are further explained under this section.

Experts have collected all the questions from different sources. They have taken help from the textbook, CBSE sample papers, NCERT exemplar and past years’ question papers. Apart from this, they have also solved the questions for the benefit of students. Experienced professionals have further checked the solutions to ensure the best quality for students. So, you can go through the Important Questions Class 6 Maths Chapter 6 to solve the following questions.

Q1. Write the opposites in the following values given below:

(a) An increase in weight

(b) Distance of 30 km north

(c) Distance of 80 m east

(d) Loss of Rupees 700

(e) 100 metres above sea level

(a) The opposite of the term increase in weight is the decrease in weight.

(b) The opposite of the distance 30 km north is 30 km south.

(c) The opposite of the distance 80 m east is 80 m west.

(d) The opposite of a loss of Rs 700 is the gain of Rs 700.

(e) The opposite of 100 metres above sea level is 100 metres below sea level.

Question 2. Represent the following numbers as integers with their appropriate signs.

(a) An aeroplane is flying at the height of two thousand metres above the surface.

(b) A submarine is travelling at a depth of eight hundred metres below sea level.

(c) A deposit of rupees two hundred.

(d) A withdrawal of rupees seven hundred.

(a) + 2000 m

(b) – 800 m

(c) + Rs 200

(d) – Rs 700

Question 3. Find the answers to the following terms:

(a) 35 – (20)

(b) 72 – (90)

(c) (-15) – (-18)

(d) (-20) – (13)

(e) 23 – (-12)

(f) (-32) – (-40)

(a) 35 – (20) is equal to 15 + (20) – (20)

= 15 + 0 = 15 [(+a) + (-a) = 0]

(b) 72 – 90 can also be represented as,

72 – (72 + 18), which is equal to,

= 72 – 72 – 18

= So, 0 – 18 = – 18 [a + (- a) = 0]

(c) The (- 15) – (- 18) is also represented as,

= (- 15) + (as the additive inverse of – 18)

= (-15) + (18) = 3

(d) (- 20) – (13) is equal to,

(- 20) – (13) = – [20 + 13] = – 33

(e) 23 – (- 12) is equal to 23,

23 – (- 12) = 23 + (as the additive inverse of – 12)

= 23 + 12 = 35

(f) (- 32) – (- 40)

(- 32) + (additive inverse of – 40)

= (- 32) + 40 = 8

Question 4.

Fill in the following blanks with >, < or = sign (greater, lesser or equal sign)

(a) (-3) + (-6), (-3) – (-6)

(b) (-21) – (-10), (- 31) + (-11)

(c) 45 – (-11), 57 + (-4)

(d) (-25) – (-42), (-42) – (-25)

(a) (-3) + (-6) can also be written as – [3 + 6] = – 9 and in, (-3) – (-6) = (-3) + 6 = 3

Here, – 9 is less than 3, So

∴ (- 3) + (- 6) < (- 3) – (- 6)

(b) (-21) – (-10) can also be written as (-21) + 10 = -11 and in, (-31) + (-11) = – (31 + 11) = – 42

Hence, -42 < -11 or -11 > -42 ∴ (-21) , -(-10) >(-31)+ (-11)

(c) 45 – (-11) can also be written as 45 + 11 = 56 and in, 57 + (-4) = 57 -4 = 53

Here, 56 >53

∴ 45 – (-11) > 57 + ( -4)

(d) (-25) – (-42) = -25 + 42 = 17

and in, (-42) – (-25) = -42 + 25 = -17

Here, 17 > -17

∴ (-25) – (-42) > (-42) – (-25).

Question 5. Solve the following terms:

(a) (-7) -8 -(-25)

(b) (-13)+ 32-8-1

(c) (-7) + (-8) + (-90)

(d) 50-(-40)-(-2)

(a) (- 7) – 8 – (- 25)

(- 7) – 8 – (- 25)

= (- 7) + (the additive inverse of 8) – (- 25)

= (- 7) + (- 8) – (- 25)

= – 15-(-25)

= – 15 + (the additive inverse of – 25)

= -15+ (+25)

= – 15 + (+ 15) + (+ 10)

= 0 + (+ 10) = 10

(b) (- 13) + 32 – 8 – 1

(-13)+ 32-8-1

= (-13)+ 32-9

= (- 13) + 32 + (the additive inverse of 9)

= (- 13) + 32 + (- 9)

= (- 13) + 23 + 9 + (- 9)

= (-13)+ 23 + 0

= (- 13)+ 23

= (-13)+13+10

= 0+ 10 = 10

(c) (- 7) + (- 8) + (-90)

(-7) +(-8)+ (-90)

= (-15)+ (-90)

(d) 50-(-40)-(-2)

= 50 – (-40) – (-2)

= 50 + (the additive inverse of – 40) – (-2)

= 50+ (40)-(-2)

= 90 + (additive inverse of – 2)

= 90 + 2 = 92

Question 6. Write the opposite of the following:

(a) Increase in weight

(b) 30 km north

(ii) – 6 – (-9) = – 6 + 9

Question 14. The statement “When an integer is added to itself, the sum is always greater than the integer itself” is

(A) always true.

(B) never true (false).

(C) true only when the integer is positive in nature.

(D) true for only non-negative integers.

The correct answer is an option (C)

Explanation – Option c is true only when the integer is positive in nature. This can be understood by this example.

 Consider the positive integer,

 5 = 5 + 5 = 10

In the positive integer given above, the sum is greater than the integer.

But on the other hand, in negative integer

-4 = -4 + (-4)

In the negative integer given above, the sum is less than the integer.
