Your first step in writing your security guard cover letter is to research the company you’re targeting. What are they looking for in a candidate? How do their needs align with your background? For example, suppose the job description mentions they value candidates with strong communication and conflict resolution skills. In that case, your priority should be citing examples of you de-escalating conflicts peacefully, even during high-stress situations.
In addition to emphasizing the most relevant aspects of your experience, convey your sincerity and the pride you take in protecting others as a security guard. Infusing your content with a more personal approach will give your cover letter a unique quality that helps you stand out from other candidates.
Last, take the time to carefully proofread your cover letter before submitting it for any application. Careless grammatical and spelling errors not only distract the hiring manager from your qualifications but also send a message that you lack attention to detail, which is important for any security guard role.
What To Include in a Security Guard Cover Letter
1. contact information and salutation.
Greeting the hiring manager by name — Mr. or Ms. [Last Name] is important. This small personal touch shows that you’ve taken the time to learn more about the company before submitting your security guard cover letter and that you’re genuinely interested in joining their team. If you can’t find the hiring manager’s name, use a variation of “Dear Hiring Manager.”
2. Introductory paragraph
Your introduction is one of the most critical aspects of the security guard cover letter. Grabbing the reader’s attention as quickly as possible should be a primary objective. Lead with a powerful achievement that entices the reader to engage with your content. For example, you might emphasize that you mitigated a major security threat or successfully ensured the safety of patrons in an environment with high foot traffic.
3. Background paragraph
Provide more insights into your security guard background in the body paragraphs of your cover letter. Highlight your ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations and coordinate with law enforcement to resolve dangerous situations. Leadership is a pivotal quality of any security professional, so highlight this aspect of your career using tangible examples. Be sure to emphasize achievements that align with the company’s needs.
4. Key skills and qualifications paragraph
For a security guard cover letter, highlight skill sets and qualifications essential for diffusing dangerous situations with poise and professionalism. Below, you’ll find a list of potential attributes that hiring managers will be looking for during the job search:
- Access control
- Behavioral analysis
- Communication
- Conflict resolution
- CPR certified
- Customer service
- De-escalation
- Diversity and inclusion
- Emergency response
- Law enforcement
- Physical security
- Risk assessment
- Safety protocols
- Security management
- Security operations
- Security training
- Surveillance
- Team leadership
5. Conclusion
Think about your closing paragraph as a call to action that encourages the hiring manager to bring you in for an interview. Emphasize how your background and experience can help the organization improve security services and safety protocols. Thank the hiring manager for their time in the final sentence, as this shows your professionalism, which is essential for any security guard position.
When Should You Include a Security Guard Cover Letter?
If a cover letter is listed as a job requirement, including one is mandatory. That said, there are some advantages to providing a cover letter, even if the application lists it as optional. Security guard positions often have similar job responsibilities, making it difficult to stand out from other applicants during the job search. Submitting a cover letter that provides unique insights into your experience and personal values can help make a lasting impression on the reader and increase your odds of landing the interview.
Security Guard Cover Letter Tips
1. highlight your communication and conflict resolution skills.
The ability to de-escalate conflicts peacefully is a trademark of any successful security guard. Hiring managers want to see you can protect others effectively and prevent unnecessary violence. As you build your cover letter, show you’re a strong communicator who can interface effectively with diverse populations and diffuse a variety of situations.
2. Feature your leadership capabilities as a security professional
To make a lasting impression on potential employers, demonstrate your proven track record of responding to high-pressure emergencies calmly and professionally. This type of role requires exceptional leadership attributes, and not everyone can handle these types of incidents with a cool demeanor. It’s also important to highlight your experience collaborating with law enforcement agencies and emergency medical services teams, as this may be required depending on the type of incident you’re responding to.
3. Quantify your security guard experience
Incorporating numbers and data into your security guard cover letter is a great way to bolster the impact of your achievements. One approach is to feature specific quality metrics, such as resolution rates, response times, and the number of incidents reported each week. You could also draw attention to the area’s foot traffic, as this showcases your ability to provide quality security services in highly populated environments.
Security Guard Cover Letter FAQs
Are cover letters becoming outdated -.
Although the common belief is that cover letters have become obsolete, many hiring managers still rely on them to identify qualified candidates for job openings. One benefit of including a cover letter is that it allows you to express your genuine interest and enthusiasm for the opportunity. The cover letter also shows potential employers you’re willing to go above and beyond what’s expected of you, a great way to stand out from other applicants.
How long should my security guard cover letter be? -
While you may be tempted to provide a comprehensive overview of your experience, the cover letter should be brief and limited to three or four paragraphs. Including excess information runs the risk of overwhelming the reader and drawing attention away from your most relevant qualifications and achievements.
Should I use artificial intelligence to write my cover letter? -
Artificial intelligence (AI) tools can be highly useful but you need to be careful when using them to write a cover letter. Security guard job duties tend to sound generic, and that won’t change if you allow ChatGPT to tell your whole story. If you opt to use AI writing support to give yourself a starting point, be sure to infuse your content with unique elements that capture who you are as a security professional.

How to Format a Security Guard Cover Letter
Just like you’d customize your patrol schedules and emergency response procedures to specific company needs, you’ll want to apply that same thought process to your cover letter.
The job description will be your guide to success here. Each company will emphasize key qualifications they’re looking for, so all you have to do is stay alert to the indicators that something is essential. For example, a company may reference using security cameras, and you could stand out by referencing your proficiency in commercial CCTV camera systems.
Security guard cover letter introduction
Whether you’re working with customers or patrol team members, you’d want to learn their names to provide a personable touch while on the job. You should do the same with your cover letter by greeting a hiring manager by name. So, try to use your vigilant abilities to see if you can locate a contact person in the job description or on the company’s website.
The next part of optimizing your opener will be getting specific to each job’s security responsibilities and mission. For example, you could explain how you’ll use your safety management skills to ensure a comfortable shopping experience at a retail store.
The opener below doesn’t make enough impact since the applicant doesn’t address a specific person or mention anything related to the company’s mission or security needs.
Lacking a personal connection here!
Your security guard job opening caught my attention. This looks like a great company to work for, and I’d be eager to join your surveillance team.
The following opener does a much better job of relating to the blend of traditional and innovative vigilance protocols that’ll make the applicant successful as a security guard at G4S Secure Solutions.
An opener connecting to the company’s security practices!
Dear Mr. Martinez,
In today’s ever-evolving security landscape, it is paramount that security officers embrace both the traditional principles of vigilance and the latest technological advancements. I take pride in my ability to seamlessly blend these elements to create a holistic security strategy that is effective and efficient. With deep-seated commitment and passion, I would like to be part of the G4S Secure Solutions team as an unarmed security guard.
Security guard cover letter body
The work of a security guard is always performance-driven. The best way to optimize the body of your cover letter for success is by sharing examples of previous work achievements that are backed by numbers, like how you improved response times or reduced security incidents.
If you don’t have much experience, you could also reference job skills gained through a security management degree or transferable skills like providing excellent customer service in previous jobs.
A body paragraph showcasing great security achievements!
As a junior security guard at Star Protection Agency, I was commended for my adaptability and knack for quickly learning new tools and techniques. Here, I increased the effectiveness of nighttime patrols by 27% through the strategic use of infrared equipment and motion-sensor technologies.
Security guard cover letter closing
The best way to start your closing paragraph is to restate your connection to the company’s mission and how your top security skills fit in. For example, you could write about how you’ll use your knowledge in strategic threat intelligence practices to ensure a safe working environment where all premises are monitored.
Lastly, it’s good practice to thank the hiring manager for their time and use a call to action, such as “I look forward to discussing this security guard role with you further.”
The closer below doesn’t make enough impact since it lacks information about specific security skills or company needs.
Lacking specific security skills or needs!
I believe my skills and experiences align perfectly with what your team is looking for. I’m eager to discuss my qualifications as a security guard with you further.
Ramon Yusef
The following closer does a better job of presenting how the applicant will help G4S in their mission to provide unwavering client safety as a security guard.
An impactful closer related to the company’s mission!
I’m inspired by G4S’ reputation for excellence in security solutions and unwavering dedication to client safety. I’m excited about the opportunity to contribute to your mission and vision. Thank you for considering my application.
One page is the optimal length for security guard cover letters. Just like recording surveillance data, you’ll want to keep your cover letter concise and relevant to a company’s primary needs, such as checkpoint patrol strategies and using two-way radios.
You should make your cover letter custom for each job to ensure the specific security skills you write about are relevant and stand out to each company. For example, one company may use an active patrol system, whereas another performs random patrols. A custom cover letter helps you stand out for each one.
When you can’t find a contact person’s name, you can simply address your security cover letter to “[name of company] hiring team.” Then, ensure the rest of your cover letter is highly specific to surveillance systems and tactical planning needs based on the job description to ensure the details still stand out.

Security Guard cover letter example
Cover letter header
Cover letter greeting, cover letter introduction, cover letter middle part (body), how to close a security guard cover letter (conclusion and sign-off).
Reliability and personal responsibility should lie at the heart of the security guard cover letter.
Unlike a lock (which is either locked or not, and can be easily picked), people employ security guards for the more subtle aspects of protection that only a human can provide. You notice things that don’t seem right, your presence will deter all but the most determined of thieves and you will be trusted with the most treasured of possessions and people. When you are standing around the same place day and night, you tend to notice the small things that don;t seem right. Observation is a security guard's superpower.
The thing is, though (unlike a lock) if security guards aren’t incredibly conscientious, human error can easily creep into their jobs after a long night shift. At that point the advantage goes to the bad guys. That is exactly why the security guard cover letter plays such an important role in the job search process. Your resume will take an employer through your experience, but your cover letter needs to offer an insight into how you work and what sort of person they will be trusting. You need to convince them that you are the person for the role.
Just as “people buy from people,” those with something or someone to protect will hire a “person” that they can trust rather than a list of achievements and responsibilities. This security guard cover letter example and guide will seek to explore how to convey the aspects of your personality and experience that will secure you that vital interview. The cover letter is the clincher - let them into who you are and they will want to find out more.
Start to tell those parts of the story that you would like to continue at the interview. Here are the core elements of our security manager cover letter example that you should consider:
- Make the most of your security guard story with a suitable cover letter format
- Share different messages in the cover letter introduction, middle part and closing
- How to create a security guard cover letter sample with no experience
- Tips to bear in mind and mistakes to avoid in the cover letter
According to Zippia , there are currently 43,000 security guard roles in the United States and with growth of 4% this is an industry that is a solid bet for the future.
Best format for security guard cover letter example
A security guard is often a no-nonsense and uncomplicated individual who simply gets their job done to an exceptional standard. In the same way, a security guard cover letter should be straightforward and to the point. The following format is a tried-and -tested way of writing an impactful cover letter that the hiring manager will find easy to read. You just have to stand out - you are at your best when nothing happens.
You want them to remember your story long after they have closed the letter, so the following cover letter example will enable you to break down your story into manageable parts:
- The cover letter header
- The greeting / salutation
- The cover letter intro
- The middle paragraphs (body of the letter)
- The ending paragraph of your cover letter (conclusion and sign-off)
Many of the tips in this brief security guard cover letter example guide are geared towards the specific profession, but there is more granular advice on every aspect of writing a cover letter in our comprehensive cover letter example. Each cover letter for each role will be different, so it is worth considering every aspect of the process.
Here is a security guard cover letter example that might spark some thoughts:
Dear Ms. Hinchcliffe,
Having participated in security teams at international events for the past eight years and previously in the armed forces as a security expert, I have learned to combine tech and process to provide peace of mind.
The role at Minefield will allow me to expand on my wealth of personal security expertise. Having worked with celebrities, sports people and politicians, I am a discreet and reliable member of an events team. Having dealt with several high-profile incidents over my career, I understand the value of being ready for the unexpected.
I bring a calm and logical approach to my work – if a client feels that you have every base covered, they feel safe. With a proven track record of vigilance and attention to detail, I am confident in my ability to contribute effectively to your team and ensure the safety and security of your people.
I am adept at making sure that security protocols are followed, with careful contingency planning and threat awareness. I have experience in managing city-wide events with multiple security teams for various VIPs and celebrities in a variety of countries and cultures.
I have a solid eye for detail and my experience helps me to suggest flaws in any event security plan. If a group is looking to disrupt proceedings, they will aim for the blind spots. I am there to spot the loop holes before they do.
I would welcome the chance to come for an interview to meet your security team and talk through what I have learned over the course of my career.

The header of a cover letter is like a security guard’s uniform. If you were wearing casual shorts and a baggy t-shirt, you wouldn’t be taken very seriously. Equally, the security guard cover letter needs to meet the requirements and convey a sense of professionalism.
You might think that there is more important information to include at the top of a cover letter than your name, email details and mobile number. You would be wrong. It is exactly these details that every hiring manager needs to see (and mentally tick off in their heads) before they can get into the detail of your application.
Also, make sure that you have a formal sounding email address – some joke account that you started ten years ago may not form the right impression. If needed, create an address specifically for job search correspondence.
You don;t have to share your full home address as there may be data protection issues. Every security guard understand the need for privacy. Also, the formality of including the inside address of the employer is no longer required. The cover letter will not be sent by post, after all.
Goal of the cover letter header: Be practical when designing your cover letter header and include all the required info. You won’t be hired for getting this right, but you might put doubts in a hiring manager’s mind if you get it wrong.
Attention to detail should be at the top of any security guard’s priority list, so getting the small details right matters when it comes to the cover letter greeting. Ensure that you find out the name of the hiring manager or person conducting the interview, use the appropriate title (Mr, Mrs, Ms) and double check if you are not certain. We all like being called by our name, but nothing grates mores than when someone gets our name wrong.
If you have not got the detective skills to find out the name of your future boss, don't bother applying.
Goal of letter greeting: Don’t derail your application by making a mistake with the greeting.
Whether you specialise in escorting important people, looking after a warehouse with valuable goods or working in a corporate office, the introduction to your cover letter has to be laser focused on the value that you will bring to each specific job.
Carefully consider the job description and find the best possible angle from your past experience to allow you to position yourself as the security guard for them. It might not be the example that you are most proud of, it should simply be the most relevant example. Show a little personality in terms of the language that you use and give your story some context in terms of the depth of your experience or the amount of time you have been doing a certain thing.
The introduction to a security guard cover letter should make the hiring manager want to read more, so don’t be afraid to start with your “one reason why you should hire me.” Make it relevant to the role that you were applying for. It may not be your top career highlight, but it will be more memorable if the person reading the letter can imagine you doing it for them. You have to get them imagining you (and only you) in that uniform.
Goal of the cover letter intro: Tailor the security guard introduction to the parts of your experience that tally best with the requirements of each specific role. Don’t let it become a generic couple of sentences that could “fit” any kind of role.
The middle part of the security guard cover letter is where you explore some of your career highlights in a little more depth. How did you go about undertaking a certain task? What were the reasons behind your successes? How did you do things differently?
There will be many other candidates who have done the same job as you, but in the middle part of the security manager cover letter you have the opportunity to showcase just how you do it differently. Differentiation lies at the heart of every successful job search and you have to think carefully about just where your unique edge is going to come from. Don’t tell the stories that most of your competition will be telling. Be unique and be memorable – you will have plenty of time to tell the more mundane career stories during an interview, but you have to intrigue the hiring manager into inviting you in the first place.
Mention the kinds of jobs that you worked on and the clients that you have served. You might have to do a little detective work to ensure that there is a match with your future employer, but if there is a match there will be that magical feeling of: “great, they have done this sort of thing before.”
Also, be selective in terms of the language that you use in the middle part of the security guard cover letter. Your job might not involve a lot of writing; but picking an impressive action verb to improve an accomplishment can always help your application to stand out. Stay away from fluffy adjectives or skills that you cannot back up with real examples. Make sure that you sound professional and don't be too conversational. You don't come to work to make friends, that could be a potential security risk, if anything.
Goal of the body of your cover letter: Give as much detail as possible around the impact of your experience and how you went about achieving it. Make the reader want to find out more.
Try to fill the cover letter with the language of the industry that you will be working in as well as that of a security manager. Future employers will want to feel that you understand their business. Have a look at other industry cover letters from our free cover letter example collection to get an idea of what other people are writing in their cover letters. Whether you are working as a security guard in retail, logistics or finance, use their terminology where you can.
The closing paragraph of the security guard cover letter should end with a sense of reliability and trust. You have presented a couple of examples why you should be the person to hire, and you add a hopeful note that you would welcome the chance of an interview to discuss further.
If you haven’t sold yourself too heavily in the cover letter and simply presented the relevant facts of your experience, that call-to-action interview request will seem entirely reasonable. If you don’t ask the question, any reasonable recruiter would wonder why not. Confidence is an important quality for any security guard, but qualify it with some evidence that backs up your claims.
Goal of the closing: End with on a dependable and professional note and don’t be afraid to politely ask for the opportunity of an interview.
Mistakes to avoid in your security guard cover letter
As attention to detail is critical for a great security guard, there can be no room for error in their cover letter. True, a perfect command of the English language won’t be a critical job requirement, but these sorts of mistakes should not be made by any job applicant. Having said that, they tend to sneak in awfully easily if you are not careful:
- Grammar and spelling: Doing grammar checks might seem like a challenge for many of us, but when online services such as Grammarly will mop up the major oversights, it would be remiss not to take advantage of them.
- Conversational tone: Security guards have to be able to get on with a wide range of people, so check that your tone does not come across as being too formal. Write your letter as if you are talking with a colleague – don’t force the sort of language that doesn’t sound like you.
- Generic examples: Try not to parrot the job description with a list of generic responsibilities. Talk about what you did, how you did it and what difference you made.
It is important to think through the written content of your security guard cover letter carefully, but you should not forget the impact that a visually attractive layout can have. You can be sure that a well-designed PDF template will look the same in any browser (which cannot always be said for Word versions) and using our simple cover letter templates will add a different dimension to how your cover letter is received.
Cover letter for security guard with no experience
Security guards do not require a college education and it is possible to secure a role if you do not have previous experience. You should be able to demonstrate that you have excelled in a position of responsibility, are a good communicator and have solid organizational skills. If you seem like someone who can be trusted, you will have every chance of securing your first security guard role.
There are many ways in which someone with no specific experience can demonstrate these qualities and a lack of experience should not put you off applying. A willingness to learn and a passion for the role will take you a long way – a security guard cover letter will help you to explore these aspects.

The best way to start a Security Guard cover letter is with a strong opening that grabs the hiring manager's attention. Begin by addressing the letter to a specific person, if possible. Then, lead with a compelling statement that highlights your relevant experience or a key achievement that demonstrates your suitability for the role. For example: "Dear [Hiring Manager's Name], As a dedicated Security Guard with over five years of experience in ensuring the safety and security of premises, personnel, and visitors, I am excited about the opportunity to bring my expertise to [Company Name]." This approach immediately showcases your relevant experience and expresses genuine interest in the specific position.
Security Guards should end a cover letter by summarizing their interest in the position and their qualifications that make them a strong fit for the role. They should also express their eagerness to contribute to the safety and security of the organization. For example, "I am excited about the opportunity to bring my experience and dedication to a security guard role at your organization. I am confident that my skills and passion make me a strong candidate for this position." Finally, they should thank the employer for considering their application and express their hope for further discussion. For instance, "Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of discussing my application with you further." Remember to end with a professional closing such as "Sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by your full name.
A Security Guard's cover letter should ideally be about one page long. This length is sufficient to introduce yourself, explain why you're interested in the security position, and highlight your most relevant skills and experiences without overwhelming the hiring manager with information. Remember, the cover letter is your opportunity to make a strong first impression, so it's important to be concise, clear, and compelling. Too long of a letter might not be fully read, while too short might not provide enough information about your qualifications.
Writing a cover letter with no experience as a Security Guard can seem challenging, but it's definitely possible. Here's how you can go about it: 1. Start with a Professional Greeting: Address the hiring manager by name if possible. If you can't find their name, use a professional greeting like "Dear Hiring Manager". 2. Introduction: Start by introducing yourself and stating the position you're applying for. Mention where you found the job posting. 3. Highlight Relevant Skills: Even if you don't have direct experience as a security guard, you may have other relevant skills. These could include physical fitness, attention to detail, problem-solving skills, or experience with conflict resolution. If you've worked in customer service, you can mention your ability to interact professionally with the public. 4. Transferable Experience: Highlight any experience that could be applicable to a security guard position. For example, if you've worked in a role where you had to maintain safety or follow strict procedures, these experiences can be relevant. 5. Show Enthusiasm for the Role: Express your interest in the security industry and your willingness to learn and grow in the role. 6. Education and Certifications: If you have any education or certifications that are relevant to the role, be sure to mention them. This could include a degree in criminal justice or a CPR certification, for example. 7. Close Professionally: Thank the hiring manager for their time and express your interest in the opportunity to discuss your application further. 8. Proofread: Finally, make sure to proofread your cover letter for any spelling or grammar errors. Remember, the goal of the cover letter is to show the hiring manager why you would be a good fit for the role, even if you don't have direct experience. Highlight your relevant skills and experiences, and show your enthusiasm for the role and the security industry.

How to Write a Cover Letter for a Security Guard Job
Is your resolution for 2021 to land your dream job? Or maybe you want to start a new career in a fast-paced industry where you can make a difference as an essential frontline worker. We have compiled our top five tips to help your application for a security job stand out, and it all starts with writing a great cover letter.
Applying for jobs can be a stressful and challenging, yet exciting and fun experience to imagine yourself in new environments. Applying for a security job is no different. While there are lots of ways to prepare for being a security guard, the hard truth is – there isn’t a single candidate out there whose background and experience will align 100% with the posted job description. Nevertheless, chances are, there are dozens of other candidates pursuing the same role. You can read more about how to become a security guard here .
A recruiter, especially for a security role, on average will look at approximately 20-50 resumes a day. Hence, they will short-list only a handful of applicants for a role. Naturally, most of the applicants’ resumes will go as far as receiving a quick skim. But this is where the cover letter shines! Click here to find out more on how to write a resume for a security guard role.
Typically, a cover letter is read before your resume. Therefore, a cover letter can aid you with minimizing, ideally eliminating, that gap between your profile and the job description. Additionally, it grants you an opportunity to present yourself and your fit for the role, before you even go for an interview. But like anything else, writing a good cover letter for a security role too calls for practice and following some tried and tested techniques.
Here are five tips on how to write a strong cover letter for a security job:
Tip #1 – introduce yourself.
So now you have agreed to provide a cover letter with your application! The recruiter has short-listed five potential candidates, including yourself, and every one of them has submitted a cover letter.
A good introduction to your cover letter will not only make your application stand-out among the rest of the applicants; but also allow you to uniquely introduce yourself. The introduction can start with a relatable and catchy story. The idea is to engage the recruiter in knowing more about yourself. The introduction of your cover letter can be anywhere between 2-4 sentences long. However, it shouldn’t take up more than a quarter of your entire cover letter.
For example, you can open the letter with action-inspiring sentence starters such as – “I have always been passionate about willing to lend a hand…”. Or, “Currently a security guard at XYZ company, I bring over 2 years of experience…”. Or, “Having volunteered in XYZ, I have developed skills such as…”.
Tip #2 – Tailor it!
Once you start the job hunt, it is normal to have an arsenal of cover letters at your disposal. But please don’t submit a generic cover letter with your application. The recruiters have read an enormous amount of those in their line of work. So the moment they sense that they are reading recycled material that does not resonate with the role, you will lose a fair bit of credibility. Moreover, you risk accidentally leaving in the incorrect organization’s name, or even the wrong role.
Doing some research on the company’s mission, values and news are easy ways to tailor your cover letter. If you can find common grounds to connect with the company, recruiters will take note! For instance, you can look up the corporate social responsibilities undertaken by the organization in the past 5 years. Then relate them to your passions and values.
Adding a personal touch to the cover letter can go a long way as it shows your care and commitment to the role. Besides, what better way to describe how good a fit you are for the position if you don’t tailor it? In addition to showcasing your knowledge of the organization, you can also talk a bit about the particular site you are applying for.
Say you are applying for a security role at the airport. Now imagine the amount of value your application will bear when you describe your site-specific knowledge on the building where you will be responsible for protecting assets and human lives. Moreover, tailoring your letter also lets you explain how you obtained those skills you mentioned in your resume. And then, connect them to the skills required in the job description of the role you are applying for.
Tip #3 – Your ambition
Ever wondered why one of the classic questions in an interview – “where do you see yourself in the next 5 years”, is asked? It is to understand how long you will stick with the industry, and hence – the organization. Additionally, in some cases, recruiters may also be looking to see if there are future positions or career advancements available that match your profile.
Including a roadmap to your career in the cover letter will help the recruiter understand your commitment to the company. Moreover, it also demonstrates your potential to grow within the organization. You can click here to learn more about what career path being a security guard can offer you. For example, your ambition of pursuing a life-long career in law enforcement will set you apart from someone who wants to be an accountant applying for a Security Supervisor role. Click here to learn more about how to prepare for a career in law enforcement.
Tip #4 – Keep it concise
Less is more when it comes to cover letters. Remember that recruiters have one limited resource they work off of; you guessed it – time! Your goal should be to convey as much information as possible while using the least amount of space. In the efforts to tailoring and promoting your skills in the cover letter, don’t under-estimate the value of brevity. A cover letter shouldn’t be longer than a page.
Tip #5 – PDF it!
If you have worked with Word, you already know how much of a nuisance formatting is. Now add different versions of Microsoft Word or even Operating Systems (OS) to that equation. When you submit your cover letter, you don’t know which version of Word, or OS the recruiter will be using. The last thing you want is to have the recruiter read a cover letter with scrambled formatting. One way to prevent that from happening is to convert the cover letter to PDF. This way, the formatting stays locked and intact. Also, if the job application portal doesn’t have a specific place for uploading cover letters, you can always merge your cover letter and resume in a PDF file and upload it. Just make sure the file opens with your cover letter, followed by your resume.
The reason why this one is a bonus - is because it is optional, and will not always be possible. It is to research your recruiter! Researching your recruiter before writing a cover letter is as important as researching the organization before going to an interview. If you know the name of the recruiter, instead of starting with “To Whom It May Concern”, start with Mr./Mrs. [Last Name] of the recruiter to make your cover letter more personable. For example, if the recruiter’s name is Adam Smith you can open the cover letter with ‘Dear Mr. Smith’. If you are unable to find the name of the recruiter, you can always start with ‘Dear Hiring Manager’.
By now it should be evident that cover letters significantly boost your chances of getting your desired security job. Unless it is specifically discouraged in the job advertisement; it is one of the best practices to present yourself to the employers via a cover letter. Writing a cover letter can be time-consuming and a bit laborious. You can find a sample cover letter here as a guide. However, it is worth taking the opportunity in writing a cover letter as it demonstrates your communication skills, commitment, and care for the applying role.

How to Write a Security Guard Cover Letter
The cover letter is meant to give the recruiter insight into how the applicant works when it comes to protecting residences and the sort of person the residence-owner will be entrusting their home and personal valuables. The contents of the cover letter should then major on the applicant’s personality and experience interchangeably. To effectively do this, below are the steps you can use to ensure the letter effectively markets you to the recruiter while addressing all the key points.
The first item to write is the header of the letter. It is expected to illustrate a certain level of professionalism by introducing the applicant and identifying the recipient directly. This is information every recruiter wants to see. Ensure the following information is provided.
Include your personal information
Indicate your full official name and state the position you are applying for; security guard. Follow this up with contact details and the city and state where you are located. Contact details can include a valid phone number and/or email address. Always use a professionally named email address. This information clears up any doubts about who the applicant is.
City and date
Next, state the city where you are located and the date when the cover letter was created. Location can be given by providing a personal mailing address. The date should be specific – show the day, month, and year.
Hiring manager’s details
The hiring manager or recruiter, should then be identified. State their official name; this will sometimes require a bit of research. Some residential homes are run by house managers, who might be responsible for hiring security guards. So, do not assume the owner is the recruiter. After the name, indicate the recruiter’s position (used when it is someone other than the residence owner) and indicate the residence name and mailing address. Ensure that this information is accurate.
Section 2: Introduction
The next section you should write is the introduction to the cover letter. The introduction is characterized by the following elements;
Salutation/greetings note
Provide a specific salutation to the recruiter. Address them accordingly (Mr., Mrs., Dear Sir/madam), and do not use generic salutations such as “ To Whom It May Concern .” Attention to detail is key in the security sector. Getting the salutation right might seem like a tiny detail, but it creates an impression.
Briefly introduce yourself
Recruiters want to know immediately who the applicant is and the position they are applying for. Go directly to the point and outline the services and value you are going to offer if selected.
State your specialty (residential security guard, personal security guard, or corporate security guard) and years of experience.
Indicate that you meet the requirements
Review the job description and align the introduction with it. Getting the introduction wrong might result in the cover letter being dismissed if, after all, the recruiter sees you are not offering something they are looking for.
Mention that you’re the most suitable candidate
Let the introduction state that you are the best person for the job, and the contents of the letter will support this claim. It doesn’t hurt to declare your excitement for the job and how it aligns with your personal goals. Keep the introduction short—three sentences at most.
When thinking of what to include in the introduction, think of the one reason why the recruiter should hire you.
Section 3: Body
The next step is writing the body. This section is meant to have more depth in reassuring the recruiter that you are suitable for the job. This is the applicant’s opportunity to separate themselves from other candidates for the job.
To do this, ensure to address the following information.
Highlight your training
By referring to the job description, highlight how the training you’ve had helps you meet the requirements and carry out the duties and responsibilities stipulated. Indicate any licenses and formal training you have. Residential homeowners are typically well-up individuals, and they will be looking for qualified security guards. Use this opportunity to show you have the necessary documentation like a Security Industry Authority license required to be a residential security guard.
State your past experiences
Mention previous security jobs you’ve done that contributed to the qualified security guard you are. This information can be put in a sentence or a list of previous.
Match your skills with job requirements
Again, refer to the job description provided by the recruiter and identify the duties and responsibilities the security guard will be assigned in the residential home. Use this information to outline the skills you possess and how they help you carry out your duties. The skills should resemble the skills listed in the resume; however, the security guard cover explains the relevance of the skills.
Below are examples of security guard skills worth considering.
- Physical fitness and stamina
- Observant and investigative nature
- Knowledge of security procedures
- Being available to work in shifts
- Effective communication
- Problem-solving orientation
- Discipline and being able to ignore distractions
- Confidentiality and integrity
- Professionalism
Discuss most recent job and responsibilities
Next, the applicant ought to discuss their current or recent job responsibilities in a few sentences. If you haven’t worked as a residential security guard, do not be alarmed; the responsibilities can cross over from one type of security job to another in most cases. Additionally, this information is used by recruiters to get a picture of the applicant’s abilities and capabilities. You can also choose to declare how your contribution impacted your last employer.
Showcase your biggest accomplishments
To close off the body of the security cover letter , outline one or two relevant accomplishments in your security career in brief. Be precise.
We introduced biometric log-in systems in the last residence and mentioned promos, awards, and special recognitions. Be unique and provide accomplishments that set you apart from the flock.
The entire body of the letter can be made to be one to two paragraphs long.
Section 4: Conclusion
Lastly, the applicant should conclude the cover letter. The information outlined below should be included in the conclusion.
End with a strong closing statement
Write the first part of the conclusion to reflect a sense of reliability and trust. Reiterate that you are the best candidate to hire, and the information given in the cover letter can be used as evidence to this effect. You can also include the reason why you want to work at the specific residence or your motivation as a security guard.
Call to action
Next, indicate that you would be honored if you got the job, and you’ll be looking forward to their response. Include contact details like a personal phone number or an email the recruiter can use to reach you. You can invite the recruiter to invite you for an interview at this point.
Then thank the recruiter for reviewing your cover letter. Use a formal and professional tone.
Lastly, sign off the cover letter with a complimentary close, signature, and full name.
Tips for Writing a Good Cover Letter
A good security cover letter can have a major impact on getting you the security guard job. Any applicant should be aiming to write the best cover letter possible.
The following tips can assist you in crafting a worthwhile cover letter.
Do some research
Research the potential employer/recruiter. Try to include this information throughout the letter so that you make a good first impression on your employer.
Use bullets
Where possible, use bullet points to make a reader-friendly cover letter. Skills and qualifications are examples of information that can be bulleted.
Be precise throughout the letter. Do not leave the recruiter wondering what you meant. Do not be generic when listing skills, qualifications, and responsibilities.
Review your letter
A cover letter with consistent spelling and grammar errors can cost you the job opportunity. A security guard is expected to be attentive to details; an error-filled cover letter is an implication of the exact opposite.

Do’s and Don’ts of Writing a Security Guard Cover Letter
Observe the following do’s and don’ts when writing the cover letter:
- Don’t just rewrite your resume in a letter for: A cover letter is meant to supplement the resume. While a resume is a summary of an applicant, a cover letter is an opportunity for any applicant to defend themselves and illustrate their suitability for a position in detail.
- Don’t get too worked up over the one-page cover letter rule: As much as a short cover letter is recommended, do not limit yourself to one page. If the information does not exhaustively fit on one page, consider making a two-page cover letter.
- Do choose your skills to be highlighted wisely: When outlining your skills, choose relevant skills only. Pay attention to the job description to identify which skills are relevant to the description.
- Do include an ‘objective’ or summary: Include a summary or objective that outlines personal goals and objectives and provides a brief overview of your security guard career.
Frequently Asked Questions
A typical cover letter should have a header, salutation, introduction, skills, experience, and qualifications, a call to action, and a professional signature.
The cover letter should preferably be one page long. However, this recommendation is not mandatory. The letter should be long enough to serve its purpose – illustrate the applicant’s suitability.

Designing your security officer cover letter: what is the best format
Let's start with the basics, your security officer cover letter should include your:
- Introduction
- Body paragraph
- Closing statement
- Signature (that's not a must)
Next, we'll move to the spacing of your security officer cover letter, and yes, it should be single-spaced ( automatically formatted for you in our cover letter templates ).
Don't go for a old-school font (e.g. Arial or Times New Roman), but instead, pick an ATS-favorite like Chivo, Volkhov, or Raleway, to stand out.
Our cover letter builder is also set up for you with the standard one-inch margin, all around the text.
Finally, ensure your security officer resume and cover letter are in the same font and are submitted in PDF (to keep the formatting in place).
P.S. The Applicant Tracker System (or ATS) won't be assessing your [job] cover letter, it's solely for the recruiters' eyes.
The top sections on a security officer cover letter
- Header: Include your contact information and the date to ensure the recruiter knows who you are and how to reach you, which is critical in a profession where reliability and attention to detail are paramount.
- Greeting: Use a professional salutation, addressing the hiring manager by name if possible, as it demonstrates your investigation and interpersonal skills, both of which are important in security-related positions.
- Introduction: Briefly introduce yourself and express your enthusiasm for the security officer role; this sets the tone and shows your commitment to the safety and security profession.
- Body: Highlight relevant experience, such as specific security tasks you've performed or emergency situations you've handled, to showcase your competence and readiness for the responsibilities of a security officer.
- Closing: End with a strong conclusion, reiterating your interest in the role and mentioning your availability for an interview, while emphasizing your commitment to maintaining a secure environment, indicative of a dedicated security professional.
Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter
- Proven experience in surveillance systems and emergency response protocols: critical for preventing and responding to incidents effectively.
- Strong observational skills: essential for identifying suspicious behavior and preventing potential security breaches.
- Physical fitness and stamina: necessary for patrolling premises, responding to incidents swiftly, and potentially diffusing physical altercations.
- Excellent communication and reporting skills: important for writing detailed incident reports and communicating with law enforcement and emergency personnel.
- Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations: ensures compliance with legal standards and helps in handling situations according to the law.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team: required for coordinating effectively with other security personnel and staff members to maintain a secure environment.
How to start your security officer cover letter: with a greeting, of course
Have you ever considered just how powerful a personalized salutation can be?
We sure have news for you! Your security officer cover letter should start with the right salutation to recruiters, nurturing a sense of respect and individuality.
Greet recruiters by using their first name (e.g. "Dear Tom" or "Dear Patricia") if you've previously established contact with them.
Otherwise, opt out for the less familiar, "Dear Ms. Peaches" or "Dear Ms Kelsey", if you've found the recruiter's name on LinkedIn or a corporate website.
"To whom it may concern" is never a good option, as it creates a sense that you've been sending out your security officer cover letter to anyone. Instead, use "Dear HR team" or "Dear (company name) recruiter" for a feeling of exclusivity.
List of salutations you can use
- Dear Hiring Manager,
- Dear [Company Name] Team,
- Dear [Mr./Ms./Dr.] [Last Name],
- Dear Search Committee,
- Dear Human Resources Director,
- Dear [Job Title] Hiring Team,
The security officer cover letter introduction: focusing on your unique value, with a creative twist
You are not the only one wondering how to start your security officer cover letter. Those first two sentences introduce your profile and should be memorable.
No pressure.
When beginning your security officer cover letter , immediately point out the unique value of working with you. In other words, what you promise to bring to the role by using your past track record of success.
Start your security officer cover letter with a creative twist by telling a joke or stating something relatable. Select this type of introduction only if it aligns with the company culture.
What comes next: your security officer cover letter middle paragraphs
In the next three to six paragraphs (or the body of your security officer cover letter) you have to prove your unique value .
Most candidates tend to mess up at this stage. They tend to just copy-paste information from their resume.
That's one big no-no.
Remember that when writing your security officer cover letter, it has to be personalized. And, your ultimate aim is to catch the recruiter's eye.
So, look back on key job requirements and write down a list that includes the ones you cover.
Next, select just one key achievement from your professional (or personal) history that meets those advert keywords.
Narrate a story around how you've grown your skill set and knowledge. Also, aim to show the unique understanding or soft skills you bring about, thanks to your past success.
Closing paragraph basics: choose between a promise and a call to action
You've done all the hard work - congratulations! You've almost reached the end of your security officer cover letter .
But how do you ensure recruiters, who have read your application this far, remember you?
Most security officer professionals end their cover letter with a promise - hinting at their potential and what they plan on achieving if they're hired.
Another option would be to include a call for follow-up, where you remind recruiters that you're very interested in the opportunity (and look forward to hearing from them, soon).
Choose to close your security officer cover letter in the way that best fits your personality.
No experience security officer cover letter: making the most out of your profile
Candidates who happen to have no professional experience use their security officer cover letter to stand out.
Instead of focusing on a professional achievement, aim to quantify all the relevant, transferrable skills from your life experience.
Once again, the best practice to do so would be to select an accomplishment - from your whole career history.
Another option would be to plan out your career goals and objectives: how do you see yourself growing, as a professional, in the next five years, thanks to this opportunity?
Be precise and concise about your dreams, and align them with the company vision.
Key takeaways
Winning at your job application game starts with a clear and concise security officer cover letter that:
- Has single-spaced paragraphs, is wrapped in a one-inch margin, and uses the same font as the security officer resume;
- Is personalized to the recruiter (using their name in the greeting) and the role (focusing on your one key achievement that answers job requirements);
- Includes an introduction that helps you stand out and show what value you'd bring to the company;
- Substitutes your lack of experience with an outside-of-work success, that has taught you valuable skills;
- Ends with a call for follow-up or hints at how you'd improve the organization, team, or role.

How to Write a Security Guard Resume
A well-structured security guard resume should follow this general outline:
- Contact Information: Name, phone, email, location
- Professional Summary: Brief overview of your security experience and key skills
- Work Experience: Relevant security positions in reverse chronological order
- Education: Formal education and relevant training
- Certifications: Security-specific certifications
- Skills: Both hard and soft skills relevant to security work
- Additional Sections: Military experience, volunteer work, or language skills (if applicable)
Security guards should typically use a chronological resume layout, which highlights work experience in reverse chronological order. This format is preferred because it:
- Showcases career progression in the security field
- Highlights recent and relevant experience
- Is easily scannable for hiring managers and applicant tracking systems (ATS)
For those new to the security field or changing careers, a combination resume format might be more suitable, as it allows you to highlight relevant skills alongside your work history.
Your security guard resume header should be clear and professional, including:
- Full Name: Use a professional, easily readable font
- Phone Number: Ensure it's current and professional (avoid silly voicemail messages)
- Email Address: Use a professional email, ideally [email protected]
- Location: City and State is sufficient; full address isn't necessary
- Optional: LinkedIn profile or professional website if relevant
J. Doe 555-123-4567 [email protected] 123 Security Street, Apt 4B, Chicago, IL 60601
The example includes unnecessary details like a full address, uses an unprofessional email address, and doesn't provide the full name, which could make it difficult for employers to contact or research the candidate.
John Doe (555) 123-4567 | [email protected] Chicago, IL LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/johndoe
Why it works
The good example is clear, concise, and professional. It provides all necessary contact information without cluttering the header. The inclusion of a LinkedIn profile adds a professional touch.
Your security guard resume summary should be a concise overview of your security experience, key skills, and career objectives. Your resume summary should:
- Highlight years of experience in security
- Mention any specializations (e.g., retail security, corporate security)
- Include 1-2 key achievements or skills
- Align with the specific job requirements
Keep it brief, typically 2-3 sentences or 30-50 words.
Looking for a job as a security guard. I have some experience and am good with people. I can work any shift and am willing to learn new things.
The example is vague, lacks specific details about experience or skills, and doesn't highlight any achievements. It fails to grab the employer's attention or demonstrate the candidate's value.
Dedicated security guard with 5 years of experience in retail loss prevention and corporate security. Skilled in surveillance techniques, conflict resolution, and emergency response. Consistently recognized for maintaining a safe environment and reducing shrinkage by 20% in previous role.
The good example specifically outlines the candidate's experience, key skills, and a quantifiable achievement. It gives the employer a clear picture of what the candidate can bring to the role.
Common security guard responsibilities include:
- Patrolling and monitoring premises
- Controlling access to facilities
- Responding to alarms and emergencies
- Conducting security screenings
- Observing and reporting suspicious activities
- Maintaining incident reports and logs
- Enforcing rules and regulations
- Monitoring surveillance equipment
- Providing customer service and assistance
- Coordinating with law enforcement when necessary
When listing these on your resume, focus on those most relevant to the specific job you're applying for and try to quantify your achievements where possible.
Your security guard resume experience section should highlight your relevant work history, demonstrating your skills and resume accomplishments . For each position, include:
- Company name
- Dates of employment
- 3-5 bullet points describing your key responsibilities and achievements
Focus on achievements that demonstrate your effectiveness as a security guard, such as reducing incidents, improving procedures, or receiving recognition for your work.
Big Building
2018 - Present
- Watch cameras
- Walk around the building
- Write reports
- Help people who are lost
The example lacks specificity and fails to showcase any achievements. The responsibilities are vaguely described and don't highlight the candidate's skills or the value they brought to the role. It also uses informal language which is not appropriate for a resume.
SafeGuard Inc.
New York, NY
- Patrol and monitor a 500,000 sq. ft. commercial property, ensuring the safety of 200+ employees and visitors daily
- Implemented a new visitor management system, reducing unauthorized entries by 40%
- Respond to and resolve an average of 10 security incidents per month, maintaining a 98% satisfaction rate among staff and visitors
- Train and mentor 5 junior security officers in surveillance techniques and emergency procedures
- Received "Security Officer of the Year" award in 2020 for outstanding performance and initiative
The good example provides specific details about the scope of responsibility, quantifiable achievements, and recognition received. It demonstrates the candidate's ability to improve security measures and handle various aspects of the job effectively.
Creating a security guard resume without work experience can be challenging, but you can still showcase your potential by:
- Highlighting transferable skills from other jobs or volunteer work (e.g., customer service, attention to detail, physical fitness)
- Emphasizing relevant education or training (e.g., criminal justice courses, first aid certification)
- Including any security-related certifications or licenses you've obtained
- Mentioning volunteer experiences that demonstrate responsibility and trustworthiness
- Showcasing personal qualities that are valuable in security work (e.g., integrity, vigilance, communication skills)
Focus on creating a strong objective statement that expresses your enthusiasm for starting a career in security and your willingness to learn.
What's the best education for a Security Guard resume?
While formal education requirements for security guards can vary, the following educational backgrounds can be beneficial:
- High school diploma or GED (usually the minimum requirement)
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, or Security Management
- Military training or experience
- Specialized security training courses or academies
- First Aid and CPR certifications
Remember to list any relevant coursework or training that aligns with security work, even if it's not from a formal degree program.
What's the best professional organization for a Security Guard resume?
Membership in professional organizations can demonstrate your commitment to the security field. Some reputable organizations include:
- ASIS International (formerly American Society for Industrial Security)
- National Association of Security Companies (NASCO)
- International Foundation for Protection Officers (IFPO)
- Security Industry Association (SIA)
- World Association of Detectives (WAD)
Involvement in these organizations can provide networking opportunities, access to industry resources, and additional certifications that can enhance your resume.
Including awards on your security guard resume can significantly boost your credibility. Some notable awards to include are:
- "Security Officer of the Year" from your company or a local security association
- Recognition for preventing a major security incident or crime
- Awards for outstanding customer service in a security role
- Commendations from law enforcement for assistance in investigations
- Safety achievement awards or recognition for maintaining incident-free periods
- Leadership awards for mentoring or training other security personnel
When listing awards, include the name of the award, the issuing organization, and the year received. If possible, briefly explain the significance of the award or the achievement it recognizes.
Volunteer work can demonstrate your commitment to community safety and provide valuable experience. Consider including:
- Neighborhood Watch participation or leadership
- Volunteer firefighting or emergency medical services
- Security volunteer at community events or festivals
- Disaster response volunteer with organizations like the Red Cross
- Youth mentoring programs, especially those focused on safety or crime prevention
- Search and rescue team participation
When listing volunteer experiences, focus on roles that highlight skills relevant to security work, such as vigilance, teamwork, and crisis management.
Hard skills are specific, teachable abilities that are easy to quantify. For a security guard resume, consider including:
- Surveillance system operation (CCTV, access control systems)
- Emergency response protocols
- Self-defense techniques
- Report writing and documentation
- Firearms proficiency (if relevant to the position)
- Knowledge of security laws and regulations
- Crowd control techniques
- Basic computer skills for logging incidents and accessing security databases
Tailor these skills to match the requirements of the specific security position you're applying for.
Soft skills are personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively with others. Essential soft skills for security guards include:
- Attention to detail
- Communication skills (verbal and written)
- Critical thinking and problem-solving
- Conflict resolution
- Teamwork and collaboration
- Adaptability and flexibility
- Stress management
- Physical fitness and stamina
- Integrity and trustworthiness
- Customer service orientation
When listing soft skills, try to provide brief examples of how you've demonstrated these qualities in previous roles or situations.
Certifications can significantly enhance a security guard resume by demonstrating specialized knowledge and commitment to professional development. Some valuable certifications include:
- Certified Protection Officer (CPO)
- Security License (specific to your state or region)
- Firearms Certification (if applicable to the role)
- Emergency Management Certification
- Defensive Driving Certification
Be sure to include the certifying body and the date of certification or expiration. Keep your certifications current to maintain their value on your resume.
To create a standout security guard resume:
- Tailor your resume to the specific job description, highlighting relevant skills and experiences
- Use action verbs to describe your responsibilities and achievements
- Quantify your achievements where possible (e.g., "Reduced security incidents by 30% over 6 months")
- Keep your resume concise and well-organized, typically no more than two pages
- Proofread carefully to eliminate errors that could suggest lack of attention to detail
- Include any specialized training or knowledge relevant to the specific security setting (e.g., retail, corporate, healthcare)
- Highlight your physical fitness and ability to handle the demands of the job
- Emphasize your reliability and punctuality, crucial traits for security personnel
The resume length for a security guard resume depends on your experience level:
- Entry-level or early career (0-3 years experience): Aim for a single page
- Mid-career (3-10 years experience): One to two pages is appropriate
- Experienced or senior-level (10+ years experience): Two pages maximum
Remember, quality is more important than quantity. Focus on including the most relevant and impactful information rather than trying to fill space. Use concise language and bullet points to keep your resume readable and engaging.
The focus of a security guard resume should be on demonstrating your ability to maintain safety and security in various environments. Key areas to emphasize include:
- Relevant work experience in security roles
- Specific skills related to surveillance, emergency response, and conflict resolution
- Knowledge of security protocols and legal regulations
- Physical fitness and ability to perform the job's demands
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent communication abilities, both verbal and written
